Good to bring up the different provincial healthcare realities. My niece needed an ambulance while in BC. She lives in Ontario. She received a $800 ambulance bill. As she is 19 years old, mom and dad helped out. It means when we travel in or outside of our home countries, we have to do our homework and be prepared.

Thanks for the suggestion to look into annual travel insurance. For my upcoming cruise, I declined the cruise line's insurance and found an annual policy by Allianz for the same price which will cover the cruise plus the next year's travel. Bonus: car rental coverage is included since I fly to visit family and rent a car on these short trips. I always get medical evacuation coverage when cruising or traveling internationally since friends and family have needed it in the past. Also, on my last cruise I caught Covid and Trip Mate covered most of the hotel and flight change costs but was very expensive and needs to be purchased for each trip. So next time I'm buying an annual policy which will save money and hopefully also simplify travel by only having to purchase once a year.
It's difficult and more expensive if one partner has many illnesses and you are both over 65, but even with that through CIBC bank we found travel insurance for one month for about $600.00 for the two of us. Thanks for all the information. We will keep doing our research.
We recently needed the use of the ER in New Brunswick and we were coming from Ontario. Expecting to pay, my husband went to the people in charge and to our surprise there was no charge for my mini surgery.

I'm in total agreement and maintain the same type of travel insurance. Often overlooked is evacuation insurance. While typical travel insurance will have a form of "transportation home" coverage it is usually at the discretion of the insurer's medical staff and typically covers an economy seat home on an airline. Evacuation insurance such as provided by Medjet will evacuate you in an air ambulance from any hospital you may find yourself in while traveling to a hospital near your home. That is the basic criteria of evacuation insurance, you're leaving one hospital and being transported to a hospital near your home. And it doesn't have to be medically necessary, you're in a foreign hospital for instance, you're going to be there a while and they don't speak your language, medical care might be fine, but you want out. As long as you are going from hospital A to hospital B that's when evacuation insurance kicks in.
I have a yearly policy with CAA and it's very reasonable at just over $100. I did have a medical emergency which required a brief OR procedure and it was fully covered.
Hi Norm and Tina I agree that insurance is so important now days. We also have a MROO(municipal workers of Ontario)medical plan for thirty days at a time annually. The time away travelling for insurance can be increased up to five months annually. There is no age limit questions or health questions, so we are good for life or as long as we are travelling. $54 a month for the two of us at 30 day periods of travel. We do pay with our travel credit card so we have some partial coverage. On our Riverboat we bought additional cancelation/interruption/baggage/medical insurance in case of Covid(which I got) for hotels and different flights home if required. Insurance companies are easy to deal with if there is a claim from my experience. Manulife and Allianz are the big two in Canada. I studied and read all of the fine print comparing policies. We are looking forward to a thirty day trip sometime! Stay well and enjoy your trip planning!
Does the MROO insurance cover all pre-existing conditions regardless of stability? That’s the clencher, with many insurances you can’t have changes in your medical condition or meds within 3-12 months depending upon age.
@@rosiej9231 Some policies will not provide coverage for conditions that exist before your departure. This includes conditions for which you have seen a doctor or received other treatment recently. Other policies may provide coverage for these conditions, but on a limited basis. f you currently have a condition, check your policy to see if you would be covered were an emergency to arise. Rosie J, the onus is on you to check this with MROO, not Tina and Norm. Tina and Norm are not bona fide insurance brokers, you are placing them in an awkward situation.
Hey Tina and Norm. We have a similar BMO Mastercard Air Miles but only has trip cancellation and car rental insurance included. No medical coverage. I can say that it is worth having. Several years ago my wife and I had a trip booked to Mexico and she fell ill the day before we were scheduled to go and had to cancel. We had to submit some paperwork but was fairly easy to make the claim. There is a maximum payable on ours of $2,500 per person and they paid us the entire amount. The cost of the trip was $6,000 so we were out of pocket by $1,000 but that's better than 6. Would never consider leaving the country without insurance. That's just foolish and tempting fate. Good advice to shop around, not just for costs but for coverage as well. And remember, these policies do not cover pre-existing conditions, including medicine dosage changes. Each policy will outline what they consider "stable" and the length of time applicable- some are 90 days and some are 180 days. I also have a BMO credit card and looked at the coverage but it was capped at $2 million and $2000.00 for trip interruption/cancellation so for my trip it wasn't enough coverage. Your policy may differ than the one I looked at. Costco also has coverage through Manulife in Canada and that may be a good option for some people. More coverage.

When it comes to travel health insurance shopping just on price is a mistake. When you have a health emergency that lands you in hospital out of country you want to know you are covered. Sitting in the ER with chest pains or you wake up in the ICU a few dollars here or there in insurance premiums hardly matters. In September I started some blood pressure meds for what was really only somewhat elevated blood pressure (I was borderline) but my existing carrier had the 180 day "stability" clause so I was out of coverage for our annual winter stay down south in January. That is what made me look for a travel insurance broker. They were able to find me good coverage with a 90 stability clause and that cost about the same as I was paying before. If I'd have needed it they could have found me insurance with just 30 days of stability though I imagine at a higher price. Still, if you don't want to change your plans it might be worth it to you.

It would be interesting too if you did a video where viewers could comment on the experiences they've had when making a medical claim while away. Which insurance companies stack up best? And can you get travel insurance again if you have made a claim in the past? Also look at the insurance company reviews your big bank is partnered with, for example BMO uses Allianz. I think we've all heard horror stories on the news. A friend tried to reach her Canadian bank insurance company emergency numbers for hours and hours while her husband lay in emergency in Mexico. She even tried contacting her same bank for help, but they have nothing to do with the insurance they provide. By the time the insurance company finally answered her call AFTER 2 days of her calling, they declined to help with reimbursement as she wasn't within the 48 hour window. She was not using a cell phone and could not show proof of phone records. Her bank did help out either. Buyer beware.

But honestly almost all the insurance companies that provide travel insurance, and insurance in general, are some degree of shyster, unfortunately. Hello from the Yukon. Just back fom a holiday to lovely Barbados 🇧🇧. We have similar travel insurance through our Aeroplan Gold Visa card, travel quite a bit and fortunately have never had to use it.
Accordingly, If you're over a certain age depending on the insurer, this could be 60, 65 or even 80, you will have to fill out a medical questionnaire before you can purchase individual travel health insurance. It depends on the risk appetite of the insurer when they want to start gathering that information about health. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of being honest and clear about your health status. Don't hide anything, because that's where people sometimes tend to get big surprises when something happens. And read your policy even the big, long, multi-page disclaimer. Some people who answer incorrectly on a medical questionnaire do so simply to get a better premium. You must be accurate and forthright with your responses. It simply isn't worth taking a risk to try to get a lower premium. You really don't want your claim/coverage to be null and void for the sake of saving a few dollars.
Recently we have been using a travel health insurance broker to purchase our travel health insurance. As it's their business they are very good at sourcing travel health insurance given our health profile and we always buy the annual 31 day multi-trip insurance, it only costs a few dollars more than single trip and sometimes the same as single trip if they are having a promotion. We typically are out of the country a couple of times a year and as we go to Mexico January to April each year we top up our "31 day" policy to cover the extra time there. Overall I think it's good value.
Medical insurance for travel varies with these credit card ones. With TD ours is for 21 days, though you must read the fine print. I was not covered as I had a prescription change within 3 months of travel. Even though it was a decrease of a medication I take, it was considered a change and I was not considered a "stable" person. Be sure to read ALL the fine print. We bought extra from Triple A. I had to buy no prescription change for 7 days. It went from 90 days to 7 days, nothing in between. So don't change your prescriptions for 90 days before travel or the insurance may not cover you. Also when needing the services, be sure to call them first if possible, and they will direct you to which urgent care/hospital to go to.

'Please note that if you do not call the Assistance Centre in an emergency and prior to receiving treatment, you will have to pay 20% of the eligible medical expenses we would normally pay under this policy (20% co-insurance). If it is medically impossible for you to call when the emergency happens, we ask that someone call on your behalf as soon as possible." Not sure if other companies have this clause but it reinforces the need to read All the fine print.
For our upcoming two months trip to Portugal, we paid $ 435 for two of us. It covers lost baggage, travel interruption, AD&D and Emergency accident and sickness, as well as evacuation costs. I hope, we don't have to use it, but as you said, it is for peace of mind

Premier Credit card offers excellent travel insurance, had my luggage delayed have to buy essentials including my expensive skincare for over night hotel stay, Royal bank Visa covered without any fuss. Just make sure to check fine prints and understand your coverage limit. If you travel a lot, the premier credit card annual fee is worth paying.

And thank you for clarifying the age brackets. I was going to ask if they covered after 65 and your video explained. A friend told me that these credit cards don't cover after the age of 65 (we are 60 & 61) but it appears that it does from what you said on the video. Each time you travel, you can purchase coverage through companies offering individual travel insurance (e.g., insurance or travel agency, auto club, bank, etc.) on-line, through your broker, or by calling a central contact centre. Some credit cards may provide some protection. Check the details and be aware of any specific restrictions (e.g., your travel arrangements, including any premiums, may need to be purchased with that credit card, the length of the coverage, etc). Learn about the details of any coverage that you may already have through a group benefits plan and if there are any gaps, you can purchase an individual policy. Good luck and happy travels.
One of the most if not the most important part of a policy is to make sure you have "get you home" coverage, covering any air flights to get you home, a lot of insurance co's don't cover this it is usually an extra cost.
As we winter down south for 4 months in Mexico we bought separate medical evacuation insurance. It's not all that expensive, much cheaper than travel health insurance, and when you are in a bad way most people want to be somewhere close to home. Keep in mind though the medical evacuation insurance is NOT a replacement for travel medical insurance but rather complimentary to it.
It’s a great topic but not an easy one to understand. We have workplace medical coverage for emergency medical and dental for trips up to 60 days plus the same benefits from travel Visa card, still we are unsure how to deal with claims when needed. The visa coverage for car rentals is tricky, it covers pretty much everything except 3rd party liability in the event of an accident. The insurance from rental companies covers everything plus 3rd party liability but the deductible is big. How do you decide which one to choose? Manulife cost me last year $148 for the policy as long as I did not have any serious conditions. An extra 14 days cost me an additional $60. Wonder how much it will be this year bet its gone up. They do not cover the USA, for obvious reasons they can't afford the costs down there.
When traveling outside the US, we pretty much need to buy a travel policy, for that specific trip, which includes medical. It is pricey, and I'd hate to think what making a claim would be like.

Hi! Not sure if it was this or your other video on travel ins., but I have a timely question if you could please answer. I am about to turn 65; in one of your two videos on travel ins you talked about buying an annual policy prior to turning 65. I have looked into the TD option you mentioned, but hesitate to ask the sales person the following question. I am assuming you are in favor of the annual policy given your individual travel 'volume', but as well, is it because if you develop a serious condition (God forbid!) the broker from whom you buy the annual policy can NOT subsequently cancel it. Only fault of payment of premium would result in cancellation, barring the fine print of course of any individual policy. Please enlighten me further ... am I correct in this assumption, or ??? Thank you; enjoy your videos massively and have put both sisters onto your channel as well! The tips and reviews are absolutely priceless!
We bought our annual policy from Bank of Montreal MasterCard and use TD insurance to top up our policy for stays longer that 30 days. We don’t see a clause that would cancel our policy for a big claim. We personally would do all in our power and financial resources to get home if either one of us had a major health issue.
Not sure of your policy, but many policies of a fixed maximum say 31 days do not cover longer trips even if you get top off insurance unless it’s an option they offer

Please be advised that the maximum amount a Canadian provincial medical plan might pay for a hospital stay is about $400 a day, whereas an intensive-care stay in the United States can cost, if not $10,000 a day, $10,000 an hour for significant, life-saving treatment. It is highly recommended that you obtain Travel Health Insurance before travelling anywhere especially the USA.
Insurance coverage varies widely. What kind of coverage, what kind of deductible, what does this very economical policy cover? What limitations or max does it have were questions I have. Sometimes you get what you pay for?
My niece and her new husband spent over $10,000 on a honeymoon trip and got to the gate to leave and she wasn't allowed to leave because her passport didn't match her new married name. They lost everything they paid for the trip. It was heartbreaking.

Qc is the only province that will not accept your out of province health card and you are responsible from the first $. Ohio will reimburse the cost, up to Ontario guidelines.

Given that you have never had to make a claim on your travel insurance, have you calculated how much further ahead you would be if you banked the money and were self-insured? Also, I’ve always been very skeptical of insurance companies & travel policies, because they know what’s likely to generate a claim, and so they write the policies to specifically exclude (or limit payment for) higher-probability events.

True if you haven't made a claim, hard to know how well you are a actually covered. But, while traveling if you get sick it is well worth it knowing you are covered for medical coverage. It would be good to very clear on what policy really covers and any deductibles first. Whenever we have bought and paid for trip cancelation insurance via a travel booking company, they ALWAYS find a way not to honor the trip cancelation. Three times with different companies over the last 15 yrs for domestic travel within USA. Never had a ticket refunded ever. Husband thought a policy for a 3 day cruise covered his dad getting sick. But I looked at policy carefully (he was on dialysis) and it did not seem to cover what my husband thought it did. I called the company and they were very clear he was not covered and would take no responsibility If he got sick because he was on dialysis.
It's so easy to encounter medical bills for a heart attack or fall that run up over $100,000. Self insuring for many people might mean betting their homes. It happened to my in-laws. They thought they had coverage for a trip to the US. My MIL fell and shattered a joint. The insurer said she was covered and then after 4 days they recanted and voided the policy because they said that she had not fully disclosed a medical condition which had nothing to do with her fall and treatment for same. The hospital came after them for six figures. Amd she had to get some of the work redone in Canada-- they didn't get it right in the US.

In fact, a Canadian cannot purchase a policy until after they have left Canada. I think the key is looking at Nomad policies versus just travel insurance for holiday makers. I have never bought insurance because my US health insurance covers me all over the world. And I have an HMO plan since I'm too cheap to pay for the PPO. My wife has PPO and that too covers her world wide. However, you do have to pay for the full amount upfront and get reimbursed later (4 weeks). Lucky for us, the highest hospital bill was a little over $10,000 for a two night stay in Germany. When I got that check from Kaiser, I was excited and I couldn't believe my eyes.
Specialty insurance companies, some insurance brokers offer these. It’s a per trip policy……or buy a vacation that includes travel insurance, some cruise lines offer policies because they cater to an older ground. We also saw Senior Discovery Tours includes insurance in the cost.
Having thought about this more Patricia as you age there are certain things that need to be checked for . We get checked for Iron, Cholesterol, Thyroid and Diabetes maybe you could discuss these points with your doctor and see if it’s right for you .🌺
From snowbirds to spring breakers, many Canadian travellers don't know enough about what their insurance covers while they are abroad. While travel insurance can protect against unexpected illness and injury costs, including hospital stays, physician's fees and wheelchairs, there's misinformation and confusion among travellers as to what their policies cover. There's a spotlight on the industry because of the so-called "million-dollar baby." One Saskatchewan mother is facing $950,000 in medical bills after an early emergency delivery of her daughter in Hawaii, and the subsequent recovery care she required. The mother's insurer allegedly declined to pay the claim because of a pre-existing medical condition, even though a physician reportedly said the condition was unrelated. An insurance claim like this is extremely rare, according to those in the industry, but the conflict highlights the need for consumers to be deeply familiar with both their health and their insurance policy ahead of any travel. They should also be aware of available resources to help resolve disputes. About 40 per cent of travelling Canadians don't know what kind of travel insurance they've purchased which represents insurers, brokers and other professionals in the field. Young voyagers may be more at risk, since older travellers particularly snowbirds on longer journeys tend to be well-educated. There are three things all travellers need to understand before they embark: their health, their trip and their policy. When it comes to that last factor, the key risk most policies won't cover is unstable pre-existing medical conditions which are any conditions known to a person, for which they've sought treatment from a licensed physician. Broadly, this means travellers are often on the hook for any emergency expenses that stem from a medical issue diagnosed within three to four months before the trip, or a longer-term condition that has changed. A pre-existing condition could also include a medication change in the six to eight months prior to the person travelling. Individual policies have different exemptions when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth, participation in extreme sports or exotic activities such as scuba diving, substance abuse and acts of war. Some countries are hard to obtain travel insurance for, and many policies won't cover costs of healing from self-inflicted wounds. Many Canadians are also unaware what their provincial health-care plan will cover when they travel. Across Canada the short answer is: not much. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), for example, will pay for just 7 to 9 per cent of a hospitalization abroad, to a maximum of $400 a day. Some provinces cover far less. But consumers need to ask more questions ahead of their travel. We're finding a lot of consumers don't understand that they also have a duty to provide information to the insurer and sometimes they might be leaving out critical information when applying. It's not necessarily purposeful, of course. Buyer beware. Good luck, safe travels.

Good to bring up the different provincial healthcare realities. My niece needed an ambulance while in BC. She lives in Ontario. She received a $800 ambulance bill. As she is 19 years old, mom and dad helped out. It means when we travel in or outside of our home countries, we have to do our homework and be prepared.

Thanks for the suggestion to look into annual travel insurance. For my upcoming cruise, I declined the cruise line's insurance and found an annual policy by Allianz for the same price which will cover the cruise plus the next year's travel. Bonus: car rental coverage is included since I fly to visit family and rent a car on these short trips. I always get medical evacuation coverage when cruising or traveling internationally since friends and family have needed it in the past. Also, on my last cruise I caught Covid and Trip Mate covered most of the hotel and flight change costs but was very expensive and needs to be purchased for each trip. So next time I'm buying an annual policy which will save money and hopefully also simplify travel by only having to purchase once a year.

We recently needed the use of the ER in New Brunswick and we were coming from Ontario. Expecting to pay, my husband went to the people in charge and to our surprise there was no charge for my mini surgery.

I'm in total agreement and maintain the same type of travel insurance.
Often overlooked is evacuation insurance. While typical travel insurance will have a form of "transportation home" coverage it is usually at the discretion of the insurer's medical staff and typically covers an economy seat home on an airline. Evacuation insurance such as provided by Medjet will evacuate you in an air ambulance from any hospital you may find yourself in while traveling to a hospital near your home. That is the basic criteria of evacuation insurance, you're leaving one hospital and being transported to a hospital near your home. And it doesn't have to be medically necessary, you're in a foreign hospital for instance, you're going to be there a while and they don't speak your language, medical care might be fine, but you want out. As long as you are going from hospital A to hospital B that's when evacuation insurance kicks in.

Hi Norm and Tina I agree that insurance is so important now days. We also have a MROO(municipal workers of Ontario)medical plan for thirty days at a time annually. The time away travelling for insurance can be increased up to five months annually. There is no age limit questions or health questions, so we are good for life or as long as we are travelling. $54 a month for the two of us at 30 day periods of travel. We do pay with our travel credit card so we have some partial coverage. On our Riverboat we bought additional cancelation/interruption/baggage/medical insurance in case of Covid(which I got) for hotels and different flights home if required. Insurance companies are easy to deal with if there is a claim from my experience. Manulife and Allianz are the big two in Canada. I studied and read all of the fine print comparing policies. We are looking forward to a thirty day trip sometime! Stay well and enjoy your trip planning!

Does the MROO insurance cover all pre-existing conditions regardless of stability? That’s the clencher, with many insurances you can’t have changes in your medical condition or meds within 3-12 months depending upon age.

Other policies may provide coverage for these conditions, but on a limited basis. f you currently have a condition, check your policy to see if you would be covered were an emergency to arise. Rosie J, the onus is on you to check this with MROO, not Tina and Norm. Tina and Norm are not bona fide insurance brokers, you are placing them in an awkward situation.
Hey Tina and Norm. We have a similar BMO Mastercard Air Miles but only has trip cancellation and car rental insurance included. No medical coverage. I can say that it is worth having. Several years ago my wife and I had a trip booked to Mexico and she fell ill the day before we were scheduled to go and had to cancel. We had to submit some paperwork but was fairly easy to make the claim. There is a maximum payable on ours of $2,500 per person and they paid us the entire amount. The cost of the trip was $6,000 so we were out of pocket by $1,000 but that's better than 6. Would never consider leaving the country without insurance. That's just foolish and tempting fate. Good advice to shop around, not just for costs but for coverage as well. And remember, these policies do not cover pre-existing conditions, including medicine dosage changes. Each policy will outline what they consider "stable" and the length of time applicable- some are 90 days and some are 180 days. I also have a BMO credit card and looked at the coverage but it was capped at $2 million and $2000.00 for trip interruption/cancellation so for my trip it wasn't enough coverage. Your policy may differ than the one I looked at. Costco also has coverage through Manulife in Canada and that may be a good option for some people. More coverage.

When it comes to travel health insurance shopping just on price is a mistake. When you have a health emergency that lands you in hospital out of country you want to know you are covered. Sitting in the ER with chest pains or you wake up in the ICU a few dollars here or there in insurance premiums hardly matters. In September I started some blood pressure meds for what was really only somewhat elevated blood pressure (I was borderline) but my existing carrier had the 180 day "stability" clause so I was out of coverage for our annual winter stay down south in January. That is what made me look for a travel insurance broker. They were able to find me good coverage with a 90 stability clause and that cost about the same as I was paying before. If I'd have needed it they could have found me insurance with just 30 days of stability though I imagine at a higher price. Still, if you don't want to change your plans it might be worth it to you.

It would be interesting too if you did a video where viewers could comment on the experiences they've had when making a medical claim while away. Which insurance companies stack up best? And can you get travel insurance again if you have made a claim in the past? Also look at the insurance company reviews your big bank is partnered with, for example BMO uses Allianz.
I think we've all heard horror stories on the news. A friend tried to reach her Canadian bank insurance company emergency numbers for hours and hours while her husband lay in emergency in Mexico. She even tried contacting her same bank for help, but they have nothing to do with the insurance they provide. By the time the insurance company finally answered her call AFTER 2 days of her calling, they declined to help with reimbursement as she wasn't within the 48 hour window. She was not using a cell phone and could not show proof of phone records. Her bank did help out either. Buyer beware.

But honestly almost all the insurance companies that provide travel insurance, and insurance in general, are some degree of shyster, unfortunately. Maybe not though with some if you pay astronomically for deluxe coverage.

Accordingly, If you're over a certain age depending on the insurer, this could be 60, 65 or even 80, you will have to fill out a medical questionnaire before you can purchase individual travel health insurance. It depends on the risk appetite of the insurer when they want to start gathering that information about health. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of being honest and clear about your health status. Don't hide anything, because that's where people sometimes tend to get big surprises when something happens. And read your policy even the big, long, multi-page disclaimer. Some people who answer incorrectly on a medical questionnaire do so simply to get a better premium. You must be accurate and forthright with your responses. It simply isn't worth taking a risk to try to get a lower premium. You really don't want your claim/coverage to be null and void for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Recently we have been using a travel health insurance broker to purchase our travel health insurance. As it's their business they are very good at sourcing travel health insurance given our health profile and we always buy the annual 31 day multi-trip insurance, it only costs a few dollars more than single trip and sometimes the same as single trip if they are having a promotion. We typically are out of the country a couple of times a year and as we go to Mexico January to April each year we top up our "31 day" policy to cover the extra time there. Overall I think it's good value.

Medical insurance for travel varies with these credit card ones. With TD ours is for 21 days, though you must read the fine print. I was not covered as I had a prescription change within 3 months of travel. Even though it was a decrease of a medication I take, it was considered a change and I was not considered a "stable" person. Be sure to read ALL the fine print. We bought extra from Triple A. I had to buy no prescription change for 7 days. It went from 90 days to 7 days, nothing in between. So don't change your prescriptions for 90 days before travel or the insurance may not cover you. Also when needing the services, be sure to call them first if possible, and they will direct you to which urgent care/hospital to go to.

For our upcoming two months trip to Portugal, we paid $ 435 for two of us. It covers lost baggage, travel interruption, AD&D and Emergency accident and sickness, as well as evacuation costs. I hope, we don't have to use it, but as you said, it is for peace of mind

Premier Credit card offers excellent travel insurance, had my luggage delayed have to buy essentials including my expensive skincare for over night hotel stay, Royal bank Visa covered without any fuss. Just make sure to check fine prints and understand your coverage limit. If you travel a lot, the premier credit card annual fee is worth paying.

When completing the health portion of your travel insurance application form, answer all questions truthfully and completely. Make sure you list all medications that you take as well as all pre-existing medical conditions (heart attack at any point in life must be disclosed). If you are not completely sure about what to include, you can call your insurer or check with your doctor.

Each time you travel, you can purchase coverage through companies offering individual travel insurance (e.g., insurance or travel agency, auto club, bank, etc.) on-line, through your broker, or by calling a central contact centre. Some credit cards may provide some protection. Check the details and be aware of any specific restrictions (e.g., your travel arrangements, including any premiums, may need to be purchased with that credit card, the length of the coverage, etc). Learn about the details of any coverage that you may already have through a group benefits plan and if there are any gaps, you can purchase an individual policy. Good luck and happy travels.
One of the most if not the most important part of a policy is to make sure you have "get you home" coverage, covering any air flights to get you home, a lot of insurance co's don't cover this it is usually an extra cost.

As we winter down south for 4 months in Mexico we bought separate medical evacuation insurance. It's not all that expensive, much cheaper than travel health insurance, and when you are in a bad way most people want to be somewhere close to home. Keep in mind though the medical evacuation insurance is NOT a replacement for travel medical insurance but rather complimentary to it.

It’s a great topic but not an easy one to understand. We have workplace medical coverage for emergency medical and dental for trips up to 60 days plus the same benefits from travel Visa card, still we are unsure how to deal with claims when needed.
The visa coverage for car rentals is tricky, it covers pretty much everything except 3rd party liability in the event of an accident. The insurance from rental companies covers everything plus 3rd party liability but the deductible is big. How do you decide which one to choose? Not an easy decision😮❤

Manulife cost me last year $148 for the policy as long as I did not have any serious conditions. An extra 14 days cost me an additional $60. Wonder how much it will be this year bet its gone up. They do not cover the USA, for obvious reasons they can't afford the costs down there.

When traveling outside the US, we pretty much need to buy a travel policy, for that specific trip, which includes medical. It is pricey, and I'd hate to think what making a claim would be like.

I am about to turn 65; in one of your two videos on travel ins you talked about buying an annual policy prior to turning 65. I have looked into the TD option you mentioned, but hesitate to ask the sales person the following question. I am assuming you are in favor of the annual policy given your individual travel 'volume', but as well, is it because if you develop a serious condition (God forbid!) the broker from whom you buy the annual policy can NOT subsequently cancel it. Only fault of payment of premium would result in cancellation, barring the fine print of course of any individual policy. Please enlighten me further ... am I correct in this assumption, or ??? We bought our annual policy from Bank of Montreal MasterCard and use TD insurance to top up our policy for stays longer that 30 days. We don’t see a clause that would cancel our policy for a big claim. We personally would do all in our power and financial resources to get home if either one of us had a major health issue.

Not sure of your policy, but many policies of a fixed maximum say 31 days do not cover longer trips even if you get top off insurance unless it’s an option they offer

Please be advised that the maximum amount a Canadian provincial medical plan might pay for a hospital stay is about $400 a day, whereas an intensive-care stay in the United States can cost, if not $10,000 a day, $10,000 an hour for significant, life-saving treatment. It is highly recommended that you obtain Travel Health Insurance before travelling anywhere especially the USA.

My niece and her new husband spent over $10,000 on a honeymoon trip and got to the gate to leave and she wasn't allowed to leave because her passport didn't match her new married name. They lost everything they paid for the trip. It was heartbreaking.

Given that you have never had to make a claim on your travel insurance, have you calculated how much further ahead you would be if you banked the money and were self-insured? Also, I’ve always been very skeptical of insurance companies & travel policies, because they know what’s likely to generate a claim, and so they write the policies to specifically exclude (or limit payment for) higher-probability events.

True if you haven't made a claim, hard to know how well you are a actually covered. But, while traveling if you get sick it is well worth it knowing you are covered for medical coverage. It would be good to very clear on what policy really covers and any deductibles first.
Whenever we have bought and paid for trip cancelation insurance via a travel booking company, they ALWAYS find a way not to honor the trip cancelation. Three times with different companies over the last 15 yrs for domestic travel within USA. Never had a ticket refunded ever. Husband thought a policy for a 3 day cruise covered his dad getting sick. But I looked at policy carefully (he was on dialysis) and it did not seem to cover what my husband thought it did. I called the company and they were very clear he was not covered and would take no responsibility If he got sick because he was on dialysis.
It's so easy to encounter medical bills for a heart attack or fall that run up over $100,000. Self insuring for many people might mean betting their homes. It happened to my in-laws. They thought they had coverage for a trip to the US. My MIL fell and shattered a joint. The insurer said she was covered and then after 4 days they recanted and voided the policy because they said that she had not fully disclosed a medical condition which had nothing to do with her fall and treatment for same. The hospital came after them for six figures. Amd she had to get some of the work redone in Canada-- they didn't get it right in the US.

In Canada 🇨🇦 we have to buy the travel insurance before you travel can’t get it when we are away 🤔

In fact, a Canadian cannot purchase a policy until after they have left Canada. I think the key is looking at Nomad policies versus just travel insurance for holiday makers. I have never bought insurance because my US health insurance covers me all over the world. And I have an HMO plan since I'm too cheap to pay for the PPO. My wife has PPO and that too covers her world wide. However, you do have to pay for the full amount upfront and get reimbursed later (4 weeks). Lucky for us, the highest hospital bill was a little over $10,000 for a two night stay in Germany. When I got that check from Kaiser, I was excited and I couldn't believe my eyes.

Specialty insurance companies, some insurance brokers offer these. It’s a per trip policy……or buy a vacation that includes travel insurance, some cruise lines offer policies because they cater to an older ground. We also saw Senior Discovery Tours includes insurance in the cost.

From snowbirds to spring breakers, many Canadian travellers don't know enough about what their insurance covers while they are abroad. While travel insurance can protect against unexpected illness and injury costs, including hospital stays, physician's fees and wheelchairs, there's misinformation and confusion among travellers as to what their policies cover. There's a spotlight on the industry because of the so-called "million-dollar baby." One Saskatchewan mother is facing $950,000 in medical bills after an early emergency delivery of her daughter in Hawaii, and the subsequent recovery care she required. The mother's insurer allegedly declined to pay the claim because of a pre-existing medical condition, even though a physician reportedly said the condition was unrelated. An insurance claim like this is extremely rare, according to those in the industry, but the conflict highlights the need for consumers to be deeply familiar with both their health and their insurance policy ahead of any travel. They should also be aware of available resources to help resolve disputes. About 40 per cent of travelling Canadians don't know what kind of travel insurance they've purchased which represents insurers, brokers and other professionals in the field. Young voyagers may be more at risk, since older travellers particularly snowbirds on longer journeys tend to be well-educated. There are three things all travellers need to understand before they embark: their health, their trip and their policy. When it comes to that last factor, the key risk most policies won't cover is unstable pre-existing medical conditions which are any conditions known to a person, for which they've sought treatment from a licensed physician. Broadly, this means travellers are often on the hook for any emergency expenses that stem from a medical issue diagnosed within three to four months before the trip, or a longer-term condition that has changed. A pre-existing condition could also include a medication change in the six to eight months prior to the person travelling. Individual policies have different exemptions when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth, participation in extreme sports or exotic activities such as scuba diving, substance abuse and acts of war. Some countries are hard to obtain travel insurance for, and many policies won't cover costs of healing from self-inflicted wounds. Many Canadians are also unaware what their provincial health-care plan will cover when they travel. Across Canada the short answer is: not much. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), for example, will pay for just 7 to 9 per cent of a hospitalization abroad, to a maximum of $400 a day. Some provinces cover far less. But consumers need to ask more questions ahead of their travel. We're finding a lot of consumers don't understand that they also have a duty to provide information to the insurer and sometimes they might be leaving out critical information when applying. It's not necessarily purposeful, of course. Buyer beware. Good luck, safe travels.
We have never claimed on the insurance but we do know what is covered and what is not, especially with recent doctors visits and prescription changes.

I often puzzles me why American don’t demand universal healthcare. Who wants to worry about the medical bill when you are sick or need to be hospitalized? Being sick is stressful enough. US spent most amount for healthcare per capital, but in the low middle rage for the health outcome.
