Congratulations on switching to non-alcoholic "cocktails." My husband and I did this too. We limit ourselves to enjoying one bottle of wine a month. We both feel better for this change. I totally believe in the "trick your brain" tactics used by Tina. It's helpful to create a little ritual with creating your non-alcoholic beverages
I am a project engineer who spends many weeks away at customer sites. Many people who travel for business eat rich food and drink alcohol every day. About 15 years ago I decided I would take care of myself when traveling. I do not eat rich food and only drink 1 -2 beers per week. I am on no medication and my weight is 170-175 Lbs at 5ft 10in. No bad for a 66 YO.
We live in Australia and some of our local restaurants offer a pensioner’s menu, which is reasonably priced with slightly reduced portions ideal for the elderly.
I am hanging out for my seniors card. The seniors meals are just the right size for my appetite. The standard man sized meals are a complete waste of food for me.
Got a bit sick in 2019. Stopped drinking, went Whole Food Plant Based and started waking minimum miles before breakfast some days up to 6 miles. Lost 45lbs in better shape and more money in my pocket.
Just a quick word to express my condolences on the loss of Queen Elizabeth. She was a grand, dedicated lady who handled everything with grace, but also kept her sense of humor. The world will miss her. Great video as always--
I just love when you talk about health issues, Guys. You have just hit the nail on the head with those "sins". Super common in retirements: drinking in particular. It is not just about calories, one drink a day doubles risks for breast and colon cancer. What I usually recommend: Walk for an hour at least before breakfast, practice intermittent fasting with NO snacking and stop drinking altogether: way too risky to turn into habit
To go along with the seven deadly sins one of the things that I struggle with in retirement is time management. I don't keep a regular bedtime, I'm up late, up early, and don't nap. When I was working I had a regular schedule even on the weekends. But since I'm retired things have slid down a little bit. I need to get back on a schedule of regular rest regular exercise, and regular meals at proper times. I noticed when I get to bed earlier I seem to get more accomplished the next day. Great show today!
Thanks Debbie, We do agree getting good sleep is so important to health, we are lucky we do have a routine and go to bed around 10:00pm. Maybe sketch out a rough schedule and try for one week, what doesn't work for you alter until it fits your life. Thanks so much for watching.
I believe drinking also causes inflammation and also increases food allergies. Not to mention cancers. Thanks for all of the good advice! Too many calories.
Been retired 2 years but still working part time. Get up at 6am, have a good breakfast and coffee then jump on the bike at 7am before it gets too hot then ride for an hour an a half. I'll start pushing that back a bit as the sun is coming up later each day. If I'm not working at my part time job that day, I always have a project to work on that'll keep me busy all day. By dinner time, I start winding down and might have a beer or glass of wine but if I don't it's no big deal. I sometimes find myself more exhausted being retired as I tend to do too much, think I need to go back to my previous full time job to get some rest. Good luck
Not too long ago, the New York Times ran an article asking, “should alcohol come with a cancer warning”, I read the article with interest. The first comment to this piece was from an elder-care nurse and her response was, (as a long-term care professional) she found longevity to be “highly over rated” and to drink your wine! My philosophy is this, we enjoy exactly two 5 ounce glasses of wine a day, one before dinner and one with dinner, and then the bar is closed. Should we cut back, probably yes, but COVID did bring about this habit, and habit is exactly what it is. What we do know is that we have set our limit, and that is never compromised. Good for you two for addressing this issue as we too have thought about cutting back for our overall health and calories, so thanks for the inspiration!
We agree Holly Covid definitely brought on our increase in alcohol use , as you say it is a habit one we are trying to change we are 11 days so far so good actually putting sparkling water 💦 in a wine glass to me (Tina) is filling the habit . Have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🌺😎
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Good for you two for bringing up the topic of increased alcohol use. It does seem to be a hidden issue among many retirees. Non-alcoholic drinks are just as festive; it's all about a beautiful glass!
Wow I believe I started listening to you guys near your first videos and watch you guys pretty much every week. You always find a new subject or twist to attract my attention. This morning you again surprised me with this sins video that I absolutely loved and believe is so important. My wife and I make it a daily habit to number one eat healthy, eating is the fuel for our boby so if we don’t fuel well we have more chances of having surprises we won’t like. Number two exercice every day, bike, run, walk, kayak, cross-contry skiing, swimming whatever we feel like but we move. Number three keep our minds going by volunteering in causes we are close to this also keeps us socially involved. Number four is also keep our finances in order and you guys share very well those subjects. We are also Canadians living in Qc there’s not a lot of good Canadian creators for this subject that I found but you guys rock. Keep up the good work and more important keep having fun doing it :-)
Bravo - well said! Norm and Tina retirement rock stars. Sugar and alcohol are two of the biggest poison's you can feed your body. I've cut out 90% of both in my retirement life and an MUCH happier for it. You'll find that less is sooo much more. Less food, less alcohol, less negative thinking and speaking - freeing yourself to look for the beauty in everything and everyone. Very liberating mentally and physically to be free of the daily habits and enjoy the sober purity of the beautiful world around us. So much good information on youtube to help you lead a healthier and happier life. Rock on!
@@ThisIsOurRetirement If I can make a suggestion for a video? I live in a 55+ community and have noticed that here and in general as people age they become more and more cloistered into their own world. You can walk 2 ft away from someone and they won't even acknowledge your existence, just look down and scoot away. Maybe a video to help people be aware and understand that with aging there is often a withdrawal from others around them and social settings, that they do still have a place in the world, are important and a right to be there. Helping them understand the importance of internal personal connections, regardless how minor makes a huge difference, thinking and speaking positive, being mindful of the moment - not trapped by past horrors that still haunt them, to be stoic and not let the feelings/words/angers/ideas of others suck them in and pollute their existence, and reassurance that they are not alone in their journey. The mind is a terribly fragile organ that needs continuous care. Cheers - Mike
We noticed our consumption went up in retirement, so we bought a small wine carafe to use with our dinner to prevent "oh, why not another" syndrome. When it's gone, no refills, and consumed only with dinner. Prevents drinking the whole bottle in one go. We also use "no refills" on dinner plates, too!! Sparkling water seems to stay fizzy longer in a champagne flute and feels elegant
Another preventative skin care measure for me is to not leave the house without sunscreen, even on cloudy days. I had some dermatologist appointments as well that were not so fun.
We agree Ronald and a brimmed hat in harsh sun, although Norm’s problems are from sun damage years ago, Norm has another problem on his nose so back to the hospital.
Hello from New Zealand. A 2nd point about losing weight Norm is that if you sit back in the afternoon with a beer or glass of wine, you feel very relaxed. This is because the alcohol slows down your metabolism. Exercise speeds up your metabolism and burns off extra calories, but a quiet drink not only adds extra calories to your diet, but it also slows down your metabolism so you're not burning them off. Loving your videos. I'm amazed at the parallels between your lives and ours (we are just a couple of years younger) and it's so nice that you have reinforced so many of the conclusions I've come to over the last few years in my retirement journey.
Thanks for sharing glad you enjoy our videos Lloyd we had a lovely time visiting New Zealand on a cruise 🚢 in 2016 have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🇳🇿 😎🌺 🇨🇦
About alcohol sales in Ontario during COVID, the Ontario government closed down most types of business, except liquor stores, grocery stores, pharmacies. You couldn't go to the hardware store, eat in at a restaurant, go to The Bay, go to the gym, but you could go to the liquor store. (owned by the Ontario Government).
I worked for the last 15 years with older folks in a rehabilitation facility and I learned that it is really important to start early taking care of your teeth and your hearing (wear hearing protection with loud tools, firearms, workplaces, etc.). In the USA hearing aids, glasses, & dentures are expensive and not always covered by insurance. Also people are loosing their hearing younger than they used to because of using earbuds and a world that is much louder than previous generations experienced.
One retirement sin you may want to include: Crocs. Garden Crocs become running to the store Crocs and then they become everywhere Crocs. It happens before you even notice.
Life is too short to do away with the things you enjoy . But everything in moderation, plenty of exercise, watch what you eat and take care of your health. It is so important.
I don’t drink alcohol, no big reason actually I just don’t really like to taste so I just never was drawn to it. I don’t think I ever will be, there’s no point to it as far as I can see
I maintain the same booze schedule I had when I was working. Sunday through Thursday, I am off the sauce. Friday and Saturday night, I imbibe two or three drinks for each of those two days. But it is a struggle because heck, I like to drink. Thanks for the thoughtful video.
Here in Australia most people have their skin checked every year. We have a high rate of skin cancer. We also have free eye checks. Keep up the checks.
I drink rather a lot to the point that I keep a two liter bottle of my favorite beverage in the fridge and empty it every day. That is water. I do drink a glass of milk now and then and I also have a cup of coffee with breakfast, but that is the extent of my drinking except for my wife's birthday and New Years. We open a bottle of quality champagne for those occasions. As far as food goes, we eat only local seafood and vegetables (to the extent possible). Our one splurge in terms of calories is pasta, which I make. I go to the doctor too much. I am just breaking in a new knee and I have a chronic leukemia. My wife, on the other hand, only sees an ophthalmologist. We both walk daily, although the new knee is limiting the length my walks a bit just now.
Yes, the amount of sugar is high in alcohol and beer and can be as dangerous as alcohol, maybe ok for occasional use, though better if not consumed at all. --not there yet. myself.
While locked at home during the Covid-19 pandemic I sat at home drinking more for relief from boredom, etc. I also drink more since retirement, not having to go to work. Another problem during the pandemic was my local swimming pool closed and we were also restricted with walking.
Once again, you have absolutely nailed it with regard to retirement living. It is so important to keep moving and to be proactive with your health. Another issue - you touched on it in another post - is loneliness which some older people experience in retirement, especially if they have lost a partner. This can be just as harmful to health, mental and physical, as overindulging in food and alcohol. Some physicians even believe it can be worse in terms of its effect on health so it’s also very important to seek company and to meet people regularly. Thank you once again for your warm and wise words. PS love a sausage roll too, Tina 😋
Hi T&N love this, my deadly sin is food and during the pandemic it got worse now I am doing my best to lose the pandemic weight. Here in NY the bar &liquor stores had permission to deliver to your home so drinking is on the rise here too, and with so many losses of love ones people use alcohol as a coping mechanism.stay well see you next week.
I so agree! I drink watered down wine with lemon water, eat plant based, no eggs, dairy or meat. Exercise daily, need to work on a few other gives though! 😉😉😉😁
Yes! I also switched to soda water with juice in my wine glass. It is fun creating new flavors and I don't miss the alcohol. BONUS: save a lot of money😊
You are right . Hard times - in Ontario 46 % retired people still works , in Quebec 34 %😱 ( government statistics ) But we know have to navigate💪 . My smartest move was to sell my house , and buy a newly built condo . Rest of the money put in the bank - term deposit . This way I can sleep quiet ! In 9 year the condo went double in value 👍. By renting my second garage my utility bills ( Bell ,heating ,insurance is paid ) This way I do live in Montreal for 380$ a month 🤭. No need to work , can travel . I felt guilty and started working (the money was great !) After 3,5 month I had enough - did miss too much my freedom !!! 😘 All the best to you an your winter plans 🙋💌
Those numbers do seem very high for retirees to still work 🤔 smart move to rent your second garage out Miriam hope you are having a great weekend Cheers 🇨🇦☕️🍁🍷
@@ThisIsOurRetirement The information was on the C.T.V News few days ago . This is the reality ! . Even though this is not our reality we do have to know about it
Great talk Tina and Norm. Years ago we came upon the health message and quit drinking in 1995. Diet changes are much harder. I recently cut out all processed carbs. I don’t purchase snack food. I occasionally have a treat at a restaurant so I don’t feel deprived. It helps me stay in control and doesn’t expose myself to ongoing temptation. I also do intermittent fasting. Exercise and reducing or eliminating stress are important as well. I have had a cancer diagnosis twice, 2011 and 2014. I have come across information outside conventional wisdom for cancer so I have refused treatment. Instead I chose to have lumps removed and changed my lifestyle. My oncologist told me I was guaranteed late stage cancer. That was eight years ago. I have watched so many relatives choose conventional treatment, chemo therapy and radiation and watched them suffer and ultimately die a painful death. That’s not for me. The medical community has its limitations. Your wise to review your lifestyle and make changes where necessary. Thanks for keeping us all thinking and staying healthy. On another note, the world has lost a great historic figure, Queen Elizabeth II. What a classy lady and a wise woman.
Thanks so much for sharing your story, we hope you are keeping well. Diet is so important and we are doing similar to you intermittent fasting overnight and delaying breakfast while we exercise. We cut out sugar 6 years ago and eat a low carb diet. Enjoy your weekend.
Animal products can contribute to cancer cell development and growth, if you can switch to low fat, whole-food plant based diet, your condition could greatly improve. Please read more about it or watch some of the UA-cam videos from Physicians Committee to find out more about this type of diet. Wish you all the best. Take care.
@@tyng-shyanhuang9460 I am doing well. No evidence of cancer from my MRI that I had done through a private clinic in Vancouver. Thank you for your suggestion. I have had so many relatives that have passed away from Cancer that I have had the opportunity to be exposed to so many good theories on curing cancer naturally. I do agree with your information on diet. A high carb processed diet should be avoided. Eat only foods as grown 90% and 10% organic animal based.
@@debiwillis9045 I had two lumps surgically removed. One on my head and one behind my ear in the lymph system. That’s all I was prepared to do. I subscribe to a cancer sight to stay informed. I don’t live in fear. I liked Olivia Newton-John’s attitude. She was living with her illness instead of battling it. She did mindful meditation. She used conventional and natural. She was seeking a cure for cancer and hoped to do it naturally. Everyone’s situation is so different. Preventative is the best perpetration.
Please continue to be courageous in bringing topics like this up. With alcoholism part of my childhood, i stopped at 20 and benefitted greatly (in many many ways).
Glad you are taking care of yourselves. I gets an annual physical and my doctor is quite through. EKG, fella occult, blood work, etc. I am trying to age well and have no issue with testing, getting 10000 step, eating right, etc. I appreciate that you called attention to taking care of you one and only body.
You two inspired me to think more about my health. I am in my mid 50s so have to think about long term. Online classes for yoga, pilates, tai chi can be found on youtube and Pilates had a good promo. We walk a lot.
Sometimes we do not realize that alcohol has been brought into our daily schedule as a nice thing to do. We must keep control of the alcohol and not the alcohol taking control of us. I believe it is the number "one" destroyer of family and human life in general. Good stuff you guys, thanks.
Help! I eat one meal a day all whole foods no added process sugars and 2 glasses of watered down wine. OMG ! I do drink coffee with cream. 227 lbs to 165 lbs since Nov 27th 2022. Hikes and beach walks. Do i need to give up my daily extra dry red wine? Have a great week everyone!
Excellent topic. My husband and I decided to stop alcohol 5 years ago in our earlyish 50's. Poor sleep, morning headaches, belly fat and expense not to mention our desire to maintain good health caused us to stop. Also, having watched so many of my mom's elderly friends (cocktail generation) pass from breast cancer was very sobering for me personally. When I started HRT for menopause that was the end of spirits for me. I found making homemade kombucha (with its trace amount of alcohol) helped us transition off our fave drinks. It took a while to lose the craving, but it's completely gone now, so for those trying to quit, know the desire will eventually pass. Thank you also for mentioning skin checks. Here in Canada's sunniest city the rate of skin cancer is very high. Lots of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma among my family and friends, so sunscreen and a hat (because even thick hair isn't a sunscreen) is such a good idea.
CBD oil is also great way to give up the booze, it relaxes you & also is good for you. I believe it’s very easy to get in Canada ? Great topic & very current. Regards from Downunder 🇦🇺🙏
Yeah good video! My Mum struggled with alcohol after she retired and it made me much more aware of the issue when I retired. I definitely feel this is the time I am using to get myself as fit as possible - so I can enjoy as long a retirement as possible 💪😁 Glad you are both keeping well 🎉
Agree, as mental health provider for over 35 yrs, this is still being dealt with. Especially the young and middle aged. They have fewer adoptive skills. They expect life to always be good. They aren’t trained in coping strategies..
Thank you for highlighting this. I had no idea. I don’t drink thankfully. But I do struggle with loneliness. My children have families and work. So contact is spotty . It’s been a difficult adjustment. So thankful for your advice. Your ideas helps me make little goals here and there. Most appreciative 💖💖✨
So glad you enjoy our videos Marigold, perhaps look at joining local coffee ☕️ clubs or card groups we are fortunate that living in an apartment we can meet people in the elevator or just going to get the mail and we have coffee meet up twice a week and cards should you want to join in . Also maybe join the YMCA for swimming or find a local seniors community centre that has talks and outings going on . Have a great week Cheers 😎🌺☕️
My happy hour is 11pm if I'm at home and a bit earlier if I'm out. I basically do it last thing before bed, that way I'll generally tend to stop at one drink. It seems to work for me, but we're all different.
Thanks Norm and Tina. For the "Cocktail Hour" we have started drinking immunity drinks - currently New Zealand-bred Blackadder blackcurrants (Nicknamed “Neuroberries”) which are reported to not only increase reaction times while maintaining accuracy, but has the potential to help maintain brain health during natural ageing.
Great info... thanks. At the Dr office this past week, for our regular yearly blood work, he mentioned that cooked tomatoes are recommended for men's prostate health, and mushrooms for women's breast health. It's so nice having a Dr who is also interested in our health, not just diagnosing and "fixing" a problem.
Sound, even wise, advice is often not very exciting or attention-grabbing, and such is the case here. Thank you for your frank advice and connecting the points to yourselves personally. Your willingness to be open and a bit vulnerable in this manner add veracity and credibility to your important message. Thank you.
Thanks Allen, there are many important conversations to be had and we like bringing them to the retirement community, even awkward ones like alcohol etc. Have a great weekend.
its also good to keep busy with a hobby you enjoy, learn a new skill, such as myself learning how to prepare Philippino food, with my wife as my teacher
You two are Ab-Fab!! Thanks for the wonderful talk. I agree with you. We walked about 3 miles this morning, as we have re-established better habits, like you. Much happier for it! Take good care! 😊
As far as the alcohol is concerned, I think we began drinking more when we purchased our cottage. The temptation to imbibe in pre-dinner "docktails" can really creep up. We too are resetting after a very enjoyable summer. Great video!
Important video! All true. My non alcoholic trick is having Sidlip in slimline tonic. Not sure if you have it in Canada. Zero calories with botanicals but tastes like a real drink. My husband also had a nose thing as well! The topical cream didn’t work so it had to come out.
Thanks for sharing Ren had never heard of it but having googled it we can get it from Amazon!! wow looks really interesting 🍷sorry your hubby had the nose thing as well , lovely as always to hear from you stay well Cheers 🍷🏴🌺🇨🇦😎
One thing I've found in retirement planning, is that a lot of the advice really pertains to any phase of life. Thank you for sharing these topics. Especially important for retirees, though even those leading up to retirement will benefit from these life lessons. It is important to keep yourself in check on all these points. Some people luck out, despite abusing their bodies - but that can't be expected. Like finances - if you invest in your health early and continually (or don't), those returns can start to compound over time. So the question is... what exactly are you compounding? (Good things, or bad?). While finances are at the forefront of the retirement planning world, health ought to be right up there as well. Keep the conversation going on this topic! I like the saying that you shared Tina. I will add another one to the mix that I've heard which speaks to keeping active .... "A body in motion, tends to stay in motion". While we think of Isaac Newton regarding this quote - it translates well to retirement. There is something to be said about avoiding a sedentary existence in life and retirement. If you want to keep your mobility and flexibility, keep moving and stretch out those muscles. Movement is life. Once you lose your mobility, you become a bystander to many things in life as opposed to an active participant.
Two Things - I don’t want other people getting rich off of my habits. What a waste of money! Also, since the pandemic, I rarely go inside a grocery store. I order what I want with restraint. No impulse buys.
I was waiting for you guys this morning to start my weekend. I’m glad I’m not into alcohol at all, but ,boy, I can’t get rid of sugar. And sugar is deadly. Another one to avoid is processed food, like hams and sausage that you buy in the stores, including cheese (sorry Tina). Also, stay hydrated all day long for organs and Brain to work properly- I have a problem with this as well. Many thanks for all the tips❤️
Hello 👋 Tina & Norm Great advice! It’s fun listening to you two. I’ve lost 30lbs 10 times or more. I’m down 20 now, with pumpkin bread and Octoberfest BEER season quickly approaching. It’s very difficult being retired and snacking being my favorite activity. But, we stay active and maintain somewhat of a balanced lifestyle. Thank you!
When people are lonely and 😔 they need a means to escape their aliment, they turn to: drugs! I used to love drinking booze but my stomach can't tolerate much anymore. So in a way this is a blessing 🙌. Good advice you two.
Hello Tina ad Norm, Alcohol is a sin for us, in the true sense of the word and thanks God, we were able to avoid it all along (and happy that we did not contribute in the $ 2 millions per day spending ). We live in the US and the area here is not walkable at all- So, we are dependent on our car- We just came back from Europe and we were walking to buy our breakfast rolls and groceries- On top of that we were walking for sightseeing about 4-5 miles per day- This was so satisfying at the end of the day, though exhausted. Also, the portions in Europe are much smaller in restaurants than in the US. So, we consumed less calories as well- This all strengthened our intention to move (at least partially) to Portugal. Hopefully, it will work
Glad you had a nice time in Europe we agree we would like to be there in Portugal 🇵🇹 partially as well especially over the winter months so nice and quiet but lovely weather too . Hope you have a great week Suleman Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🇨🇦🇵🇹🌺
Been drinking more whisky with a little water. Couple of ounces isn't too bad. It's the two ounces after that which ruins my next day. Sometimes that means I don't feel I can go to the Y. So I've been leaving it for the weekend and gradually reducing. Enjoy it in the evening when I drink it, but always congratulate myself in the morning when I wake up without a hangover.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement I'm eating less and still can't shake off the weight. Thinking of using a personal trainer. Was 165 lbs in the military, now 200lbs. It took me 40 years to add 35 lbs. Sneaks up on ya.
My husband and I have almost completely stopped alcohol in retirement. We don't need the added expense and to be honest it doesn't do anything for us anymore. The occasional beer on a hot day but that's one beer. We also drink soda with lime or we make our own "sun ice tea" on our balcony and add a lemon sweetner to it and its delicious. When we are with friends or family who drink we just have water or tea. We don't miss it a bit. The colon tests are very important, our doctor gives them to us every year as part of our physical in Ontario. I did not know about free eye exams though. Will definately look into that. Thanks for all your great info.
Hello Sandi, We are following in your footsteps, taking more proactive steps to maintain our health. Thanks for sharing what you are doing, it’s helpful. Enjoy your weekend.
You two are so cute!! I could listen to you guys for hours and it wouldn’t matter what you’re discussing! I have learned a lot from you - I hope one day we will meet in Portugal!
Have a purpose, a passion project, something that gets you out of bed every morning. True happiness comes from accomplishment, so go accomplish things.
Well said! we have lots to keep us busy exercise, You Tube, going to the trailer , spending time with family and friends no problem getting out of bed ( of course after tea 🍵 in bed that’s a bonus) Cheers 😎🌺
Was never really a drinker, but after a near death with severe acute pancreatitis (not alcohol related, idiopathic) I haven’t even thought about drinking for fifteen years. I’m always amazed at how social drinking really is…. At 65 I hit the gym every day for either a good yoga class, heavy weights and rarely cardio (I do walk when home, average 15,000 steps a day). When I get home hubby and I walk the dog, then we eat our first meal of the day (two meals a day). Low carb, high fat and moderate protein….eat until full and no snacking. Early supper and nothing afterwards (ok, a cup of tea). Never ever count a calorie. I am NEVER hungry! I have never felt better and my bloodwork shows awesome recovery from the damage from the pancreatitis. (Kidney damage, high blood sugar are the main ones….it’s thrilling to see the numbers change for the better) Two holidays planned for the winter….getting very excited!
For Tina drinking wine 🍷 is a habit that was growing too much due to Covid, trying to replace the habit with sparkling water 💦 appears to be working 12 days so far so good . Have a great weekend Cheers 🌺😎
Last October I started a new drug incompatible with alcohol. I used to enjoy a glass of wine once or twice a week. I decided to stop it cold Turkey. I soon discovered it was the ritual not the wine itself that I missed. I too switched to sparkling water in a wine glass which solved that aspect. I then bought a bottle of non-alcoholic wine which tasted disgusting. Now whenever I think I might like to have a small glass I simply think of that awful wine and the urge is gone. My mom and I like to split an entree at restaurants. The other tip is to eat before the dinner menu is in place, usually before 3 pm.. Lunch portions are both smaller and less expensive.
My husband and I cook up one steak, eat about a third each, and save a third for a stir fry or sandwiches. We are financially comfortable and find that we are especially satiated since we buy Prime meat and just eat less of it.
All good advice at any stage of life especially for retirees. On the water front, I drink between 2-3 litres/day but I always put lime or lemon in it. It's tasty especially when cool after I take it out of the fridge. Good taste with all the upsides of water and none of the downsides of alcohol, when consumed in overly generous quantities. 😊
I’ve joined Noom to help structure a healthier lifestyle and diet as I move into retirement. Plan to have knee surgery and join the Y with a pool to become more active in my first year. I quit drink decades ago because I used up my lifetime quota by my late 20’s. The thing I feel most challenged by is a robust social life, given my friends are all over the country, many still working, and I’m single. A book I read warns about becoming a senior who spends too much time in casinos. I was curious if you’d mention that one. We have so many tribal casinos around here. Anyhow, I’m treating retirement like moving to a new town and making a new (ish) life.
Totally agree retirement is a brand new chapter of your life , we have only visited a casino 🎰 a few times but you are right it’s full of old people who probably can’t afford to loose the money 💰 in the first place Good luck with your retirement Cheers 🌺😎
That is a staggering increase in consumption. I wonder if they looked at the falling alcohol consumption in bars and restaurants and merged the two? Congrats on taking steps to reduce. I love my wine too, and have been drinking sparkling and still water in crystal for years. It does feel special. One glass of wine 2 or 3 times a week is my limit, except for special occasions.
In Ontario the bars and restaurants were closed so yes more people were drinking at home , and drinking more as it was cheaper than going to a bar Carol , enjoy your weekend 🍷🌺😎
Very good advice. That's one of the thing I am scare of, getting more weight being at home. I am single so I don't have a partner to encourage me to go out and exercise. Very good points discussed here.
That’s wonderful Barbara, Tina definitely is enjoying having it in a wine glass 🍷 have a great weekend 🌺😎
I am enjoying these quiet and sweetly gentle videos.

What a great idea. Win win win. For health, for the customers budget, and for the restaurant profits.
Got a bit sick in 2019. Stopped drinking, went Whole Food Plant Based and started waking minimum miles before breakfast some days up to 6 miles. Lost 45lbs in better shape and more money in my pocket.
It is amazing how expensive alcohol is especially in Canada, congratulations on your weight loss.

That' what we are doing now Angela, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching.
so tuff to keep a schedule. excellent point
I believe drinking also causes inflammation and also increases food allergies. Not to mention cancers. Thanks for all of the good advice! Too many calories.
That’s probably very true Don thanks for watching have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🇨🇦☕️🇺🇸
Sparkling water with lemon is refreshing.
Good luck
Thanks for sharing we certainly keep pretty busy being retired but love it Cheers 😎🌺🍷
We got a Soda Stream a few years ago and I have never looked back! Still working on the chips/crisp thing though. 🙄
We are going to get on too Sarah!
Love my soda stream!!
Super proud of you guys for switching to non-alcoholic drinks and for sharing that decision. Alcohol has ruined my family for three generations 🙏🏻
Wow it seems that the pandemic 😷 did cause an explosion in Alcohol sales and consumption so we decided to do something about it 🌺
Not too long ago, the New York Times ran an article asking, “should alcohol come with a cancer warning”, I read the article with interest.
@@katz20200 and for me , just bothering to use ice and a straw makes it more special

Keep up the good work and more important keep having fun doing it :-)
Thanks for a lovely comment Michael we do appreciate your support and glad you enjoy our videos hope you both have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🌺🍷😎🇨🇦
Rock on!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it Cheers 🍷🎸🌺🎼
@@JustMike2 Watch Sassy Gran on UA-cam. She had the right idea.
"...freeing yourself to look for the beauty in everything and everyone." - love this! So profound.
Thanks for sharing Jackie some great tips we will try them as well have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🌺😎
Doing small things with your partner and supporting each other is uplifting and rewarding.
Couldn’t agree more with you Michael 😎
Another preventative skin care measure for me is to not leave the house without sunscreen, even on cloudy days. I had some dermatologist appointments as well that were not so fun.
We agree Ronald and a brimmed hat in harsh sun, although Norm’s problems are from sun damage years ago, Norm has another problem on his nose so back to the hospital.
It’s also important not to mix alcohol with some prescription medications. Also, remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Great point Colleen , we have friends that have to be aware of just that due to the medication they are on have a wonderful weekend 😎🌺
Some restaurants will charge a fee if you have 2 people sharing 1 entree. It doesn't makes sense if the fee is close to 50% of the entree.
It does for us as we want to eat less
Totally agree the lockdown was terrible we couldn’t do hardly anything Cheers 🌺
I worked for the last 15 years with older folks in a rehabilitation facility and I learned that it is really important to start early taking care of your teeth and your hearing (wear hearing protection with loud tools, firearms, workplaces, etc.). In the USA hearing aids, glasses, & dentures are expensive and not always covered by insurance. Also people are loosing their hearing younger than they used to because of using earbuds and a world that is much louder than previous generations experienced.
You raise some important points thank you.
One retirement sin you may want to include: Crocs. Garden Crocs become running to the store Crocs and then they become everywhere Crocs. It happens before you even notice.
Thanks for sharing Les have a great week Cheers 😎🌺
Love the video! I'm 31 but your advice holds true for people at all ages. Especially reduced alcohol consumption!
Although we are retired the advice is universal, we are glad to have you watch our video. Thanks for your comment.
Life is too short to do away with the things you enjoy . But everything in moderation, plenty of exercise, watch what you eat and take care of your health. It is so important.
Very true VP all in moderation Cheers 🍷🌺😎
I don’t drink alcohol, no big reason actually I just don’t really like to taste so I just never was drawn to it. I don’t think I ever will be, there’s no point to it as far as I can see
Thanks for sharing.
I maintain the same booze schedule I had when I was working. Sunday through Thursday, I am off the sauce. Friday and Saturday night, I imbibe two or three drinks for each of those two days. But it is a struggle because heck, I like to drink. Thanks for the thoughtful video.
Thanks for sharing Chris yes it’s a struggle 🙂🌺
I like how you 2 are like minded. Couples don’t always agree and it becomes difficult to be in harmony.

Here in Australia most people have their skin checked every year. We have a high rate of skin cancer. We also have free eye checks. Keep up the checks.
Sounds a good idea Fran to get checked regularly for skin cancer , we get free eye 👁 tests over 65 have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🇦🇺 🍷🌺🇨🇦
That is the key, eating healthy and abstaining, if you can!
Yes, the amount of sugar is high in alcohol and beer and can be as dangerous as alcohol, maybe ok for occasional use, though better if not consumed at all. --not there yet. myself.
No we aren’t there yet either , we gave up for a month , just trying to now drink less Cheers 🍷🌺🍺🙂
While locked at home during the Covid-19 pandemic I sat at home drinking more for relief from boredom, etc. I also drink more since retirement, not having to go to work. Another problem during the pandemic was my local swimming pool closed and we were also restricted with walking.
We agree completely Peter it has been a very difficult time for us all hopefully things will get better Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Thanks for sharing Anne , glad you enjoyed the video have a wonderful weekend Cheers 😎🌺
It’s easy to over do a lot of things especially in the last two years. Thanks for watching.

This is the reality ! . Even though this is not our reality we do have to know about it
Very true 🍁

Sometimes we do not realize that alcohol has been brought into our daily schedule as a nice thing to do. We must keep control of the alcohol and not the alcohol taking control of us. I believe it is the number "one" destroyer of family and human life in general. Good stuff you guys, thanks.

Thanks for watching have a wonderful weekend Cheers 😎🌺

Agree, as mental health provider for over 35 yrs, this is still being dealt with. Especially the young and middle aged. They have fewer adoptive skills. They expect life to always be good. They aren’t trained in coping strategies..

Great info... thanks. At the Dr office this past week, for our regular yearly blood work, he mentioned that cooked tomatoes are recommended for men's prostate health, and mushrooms for women's breast health. I've said this before. What a great couple. I really enjoy you both. Wonderful people. Very knowledgeable.
Thanks again Tom!
Great comment Brad reaffirms use it or loose it , hope you have a lovely weekend Cheers 😎🌺
So well said. I quit my job because of burnout and now I'm trying hard to stay active. Most days, I want to do absolutely nothing 😀
Two Things - I don’t want other people getting rich off of my habits. What a waste of money! Also, since the pandemic, I rarely go inside a grocery store. I order what I want with restraint. No impulse buys.
I’ve stopped browsing in shops as entertainment….
Probably one of the most important blogs you have done. Thanks for getting the conversations going
Thanks so much, we felt it was worth talking about.

Thanks for sharing Enid yes processed foods is another to avoid , glad you enjoyed it have a wonderful weekend 🌺😎
Hello 👋 Tina & Norm
Great advice! Thank you!
Congrats 🥳 on your weight loss Grandpa Eric, it’s is sometimes hard as there’s always temptation lurking ! Cheers 🌺😎🍺
When people are lonely and 😔 they need a means to escape their aliment, they turn to: drugs! I used to love drinking booze but my stomach can't tolerate much anymore. So in a way this is a blessing 🙌. Good advice you two.
Thanks for watching Johnny have a wonderful weekend 🌺😎
Thank you for being frank about the alcohol and food -- the expense of alcohol alone can creep up on you and food is such a temptation.
Thanks for sharing Delvie we forgot to mention the money 💰 that we will save by not drinking and agree food is very tempting Cheers 🌺😎
Point well taken. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
That sounds great Alan 🥃 adding a few drops of water 💧 opens up the whisky Cheers 🥃🌺😎
Can second the alternative beverage idea. I’ve substituted flavored carbonated water and look forward to it.
Yes, absolutely works great Cheers 🍷🌺😎
You two are so cute!! I could listen to you guys for hours and it wouldn’t matter what you’re discussing! I have learned a lot from you - I hope one day we will meet in Portugal!
Thank you that is so nice to hear we are glad you enjoy our videos we appreciate your support Cheers 🍷🌺😎
Good points on the alcohol. Also keeps money in the bank account….
Thanks for watching Mark have a wonderful day Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
On top of bringing interesting ideas and advice you bring awareness and make us pause and think! As always with gratitude and best regards
We try and find interesting topics that should be thought about, glad you think so. Have a wonderful weekend.

(Kidney damage, high blood sugar are the main ones….it’s thrilling to see the numbers change for the better)
Two holidays planned for the winter….getting very excited!
Sounds great and so glad you are feeling good with great bloodwork 🩸hope you enjoy your holidays have a great weekend Cheers 🌺😎🍷
Agree do not eat anything after 6-7pm dinner until 7am next morning ( just water)
Thank you for being so open. Thank you for your 'tricks' Tina. Drinking wine is something that i want to cut back on.
Thanks for sharing Susan agree it’s probably the ritual not the wine ! non alcoholic wine is so sweet not a great replacement Cheers 🍷🌺😎
Carbonated water is acidic. Try alkaline water, either through a special Brita filter or flavoured on Amazon. Flora is one brand.
Thanks for sharing Connie enjoy your weekend Cheers 🌺😎
Hello, I’m new to your channel and in my first year of retirement. I really enjoy your candor and transparency. Thanks so much 🥳🥳🥳🙋🏼♀
Awesome! Thank you! And welcome to our channel it’s great to have you here. 😀😀👏👍
My husband and I cook up one steak, eat about a third each, and save a third for a stir fry or sandwiches. We are financially comfortable and find that we are especially satiated since we buy Prime meat and just eat less of it.
That’s pretty much what we do Rebecca have a wonderful weekend Cheers 😎🌺
Great health tips! The Farmer's Market sounds like a fun idea. We'll have to try that when it cools off.
We enjoy visiting ours have a wonderful weekend Cheers 😎🌺😎
All good advice at any stage of life especially for retirees. On the water front, I drink between 2-3 litres/day but I always put lime or lemon in it. It's tasty especially when cool after I take it out of the fridge. Good taste with all the upsides of water and none of the downsides of alcohol, when consumed in overly generous quantities. 😊
Thanks for sharing Francois , we have also tried putting in mint 🍃 leaves and that’s nice too Cheers 🌺🍃😎
You could also add a splash of wine to your sparkling water instead of going cold turkey from alcohol.
Great idea Julie Cheers 🍷🌺
I totally agree with everything you are saying. May I add, in terms of health its good to get a second opinion.
We totally agree anything important medically need a second opinion Michael Cheers 🍷🌺😎
Very good advice. That's one of the thing I am scare of, getting more weight being at home. I am single so I don't have a partner to encourage me to go out and exercise. Very good points discussed here.
Thanks so much for watching.
