  • Hi friends,
    I got some questions on how I use my Digitone for playing live. So in this video I tried to give you a little bit of a walkthrough on how I set up the Tone for live sets and jams to maybe give you some inspiration for your own approach. If you've any questions regarding the workflow feel free to ask in the comments - I'm happy to answer them!
    Much love and stay safe,
    Miles

      Same here, I am not what musician you are! Thank you for sharing this knowledge so that I may perhaps improve my loops and my shitty stock sounds that I have been torturing my wife and three daughters with for three years now. Ouch I bought the Octatrak in mid 2017 when it first came out followed by the digitone late 2018. I suck must watch @slow haste and @ I’ve (recommended by slowhaste). Thanks for talking about the 'stealing notes' when they're layered on top of each other. I couldn't figure out why my sound was coming out weird when I overlapped them. Much appreciated sharing this info.

    Thank you so much for this. Looking forward to explore the dígitone after your amazing tips (not new to synths but to the Digitone, got one for Christmas this year). Btw, your sounds are really smashing. And great that you don’t clutter up the video and having a clean (nice looking) surface with no distractions and only showing the Digitone. It’s easier to focus on the tutorial and the unit without seeing plants/dolls and things around it.

    I've been really struggling to decide between a Digitone Keys and an Opsix. This brilliant video has made the decision for me. I actually feel silly for even considering anything but the Digitone right now.

    • @MilesKvndra
      @MilesKvndra  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much for your feedback, kwaping! Hearing that my video helped you in your purchasing decision really means a lot! I've never played the Opsix so I can't say anything about it but I can say that the Digitone is one of the best synths I've every played. The sound design options are huge and the sequencer is fantastic! When you learn to live with the limitations (4 tracks, 8 voices) and find some tricks to overcome these it is a great synth for standalone jams too! :) Happy exploring, I have a few more videos on the Digitone on my channel and some more to come soon!

      Hey John, thanks for your feedback - really appreciate to hear that and I'm very happy that my videos have been helpful! Yeah I got the Digitakt in the end of last year and really like it so far. Changed the way I make music quite a lot by adding a lot more possibilities. I think that it is a great companion for the Digitone as the workflow on both is very similar and setting them up and using them together works really good. But as you already got a TR-8S have you tried using it along with the Digitone? Would love too hear how this combo works, as I heard it's great for drum sounds too. I'll also start to do some Digitone/Digitakt tutorials in a couple of weeks here on the channel so if that's something you're interested in, stay tuned! Have a great weekend. :)

      Thanks pasxxxa! Super glad to hear that this one was useful.
      Yeah, for this transition I hold PAGE to take out the kick then I hold MIDI at the same time and open the filter on all tracks. Then I take out all drums by muting T1 and to go back I hit FUNC + no and unmute T1 to have the 'regular' pattern playing again. :)

    • @pasxa
      @pasxa 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Could you please explain the last part: “go back to regular pattern”. What does it mean? Is it some sort of Undo?
      Also, where do you learn all of that? Manual doesn’t have this info

    • @MilesKvndra
      @MilesKvndra  3 роки тому +1

      @@pasxa Yes exactly, by hitting 'FUNC'+ 'No' you can restore the pattern from a savestate (which you can create with 'FUNC' + 'Yes'). This is great when you really funk up your pattern and change parameters, trigs, etc. and then want to go back to the pattern as it was before.
      In general my learning process is a mixture of UA-cam videos, the Elektronauts forum/DN Facebook group and trying out different things on the DN by myself. Eg watching other peoples workflow can be a great inspiration for your own workflow - you just try it out for yourself and see what works for you and what doesn't. Thanks for the super great video Miles and for sharing your workflow, all very interesting and inspiring to use a single piece of equipment to the max! i have a bit of a noob question... when drum programming on a single track, is it only ever possible to have 16 triggers (sounds) per page? I see you can have 2 sounds at the same time using micro-timing like you illustrated with bd and sn, but cant work out if u can have say 16th note HH pattern on all 16th notes and bd and sn? or if only 1 sound on every step.

    • @MilesKvndra
      @MilesKvndra  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers Catt for your feedback! Regarding your question, unfortunately it is only possible to have one sound per trig. I've thought about this 8th or 16th note hihat problem that you explained myself and used a delay on the hihat to find a workaround: I set the global delay settings to 8th or 16th notes and then apply it to my offbeat hihats. This kind of works but unfortunately the Delay setting is global for all tracks per pattern so you'll have a 16th Delay timing on all your other tracks in that pattern as well. With the limitations of the Digitone you often have to weigh up which evil you are willing to accept but this can also lead to creative and unexpected results. ;)

    Hello! Thanks for sharing some good tips and making this cool vide :)
    I wanted to ask you:
    1) Do you use the same tempo in the project?
    2) how do you manage the project reverb and delay settings? I sometimes find that a different delay setting fits one bank/song better than another, which is kind of annoying :)
    3) how about sample management? Do you pick out 3-4 kicks, 3-4 claps/perc and a few hats you spread on all songs or do you have a more flexible or organic approach to managing sounds?

    • @MilesKvndra
      @MilesKvndra  3 роки тому +1

      Hey man, thanks for your feedback and for reaching out! :) Regarding your questions:
      1) Yes in this one I use the same tempo on each bank (song) but it would be possible to have different tempos as the tempo can be set per pattern and not only for the entire project.
      2) The global delay and reverb settings can be set per pattern, be sure to check that out. So I usually have different settings from bank to bank, sometimes even from pattern to pattern. The global delay send can in a live set also be used to make smooth transitions from one track to another which works for me really nice, maybe I'll make a tutorial on that in the future.
      3) I usually do it like that but I also try to add a maximum of 15 sounds for each new song of the project to my soundpool. That way I can assure that I don't bump into the soundpool maximum to early. In the last firmware Elektron also added this cool feature, where you can select and delete all sounds in your soundpool that are not used in the project. This way you can make some space for new sounds from time to time

      Hey! Thanks a lot for your reply :) really good, I’ve missed some of those features. Did read about the “purge” feature from the new OS update. I’m really curious to follow your lead. I’ve got an ARMK1 so I’ll pair those up which will give some more space in the digitone for sounds but overall I love the ambition to keep a set to one machine. There are some cool creators such as Glo Phase who’ve done entire sets. Also John Tejada released a record not many years ago entirely made on the Rytm. 🙌🏼

    • @reframeofc5268
      @reframeofc5268 4 місяці тому

      Hey! Haha better late than never. I synced them and jammed quite a bit and the Digitone complements the AR really well. I did however end up selling my Digitone, more due to lack of time and efficiency inside Ableton. So I mainly use my AR to create grooves and don’t spend time creating a live set. It’s partially simpler to me but I do think a live act using two machines is way cooler.
      My advice is to set a structure which allows you to ideate 20-30 jams on either machine and then using the E-H banks for arrangement. The one thing I did lack was a good way of fading between songs, I’d have to start the DT and then keep playing drums on the AR before moving completely into the new song, or vice versa. It’s easy to get confused but you could do even numbers AR first and uneven DT first for transitions.
      How’s it going for you?

    Nice one thanks!! good to know the trigs are deleted if on the same note!! :) and the trig+yes to ear the sound assigned I forgot this one...

      Cheers Arnaud! Trig + Yes is sooo useful when tweaking sounds from the soundpool in the sequencer - super happy Elektron added that.
      Regarding your question: The thing with the black + white patterns is more a logical structure than a trick. All black or top row patterns are regular patterns and all white or bottom row patterns are transition patterns. So no matter in which bank I am during my live set I know all the time where my transitions and where my regular patterns are and never get confused by it. The empty patterns that you mentioned are just empty, becuase I didn't use them for my jam (yet). Hope it gets a bit clearer now. :)

      @MilesKvndra  3 роки тому +1

      Hi malara, this is not something I struggle with in particular. When I make a jam and go from pattern to pattern I tend to change the sounds by opening/closing filters, change ADSR, FX settings etc. This is great as sometimes the evolved sound is so different from the root sound, that I save it as a new sound to the +Drive.
      But I agree with you that sometimes I want a particular sound in the other patterns too, then I copy that sound and paste it to the other patterns, which works great for me. Hope that helps!

    Very nice tracks, you have mastered this sonic monster! I say that because I am from the old analog school of synths, having just purchased the Digitone last week I am at a complete loss on how to create anything that sounds good to my ears (like your stuff). I have the manual and am trying to decipher the new "language", but there is nothing like hands on experimentation, even though it is not giving me good results. There are so many variables within each parameter that it makes it very confusing. Is there a simple way to get started and build from there?

The Patterns (which are named, but not viewable) and Banks (which are not named or viewable) are saved to a Project (which *is* named *and* viewable......BUT I can't view which Patterns are saved to each Project. What on Earth is going on??? Can anyone shed some light on these riddles? What am I missing? Other than that total mystery, I **LOVE** these machines!

      Hey Scott, first of all congrats on the new synths! About the patterns I agree with you although I never named any of my patterns. Maybe when I create a liveset in the future this makes sense but for now it works for me this way. I try to look at the whole organization structure like a folder structure you have on a PC or Mac: The projects are the broadest folders which then hold subfolders (banks) and they have subfolders again (patterns). This makes sense to me however I totally agree with you that naming banks would be a great thing to have as 1 bank is 1 song for me so naming these (and also being able to swap whole patterns) totally makes sense. Wishing you great fun with the machines! :)

      @@MilesKvndra Are you aware of any way to actually view a list of what's in a given Project? It is like a folder system on a PC/Mac......except, on my Macbook, I can click on a folder and view its contents. It seems bizarre that Elektron would organize everything so wonderfully-and then not give one the ability to actually open a Project and see a list of what's in it. I thought there was a menu function that I was missing (Perhaps not; maybe it just is this way). Thanks for your great vids! They're a big help.

      @@Lo-fi_Hi-brow very good point and unfortunately I don't know about a function like this. Would be very handy to have though! And you're welcome, happy to hear that you like the videos and appreciate the content :)
