I just have to say how beneficial it could be too many people knowing that Dave is allergic to bird dander and whatever, but still keeps them. I see so many animals being rehomed because of allergies and I know there’s many degrees of allergy but still, this is just a testament to the fact that it doesn’t always mean you can’t keep an animal! Awesome video, I love all of your set ups and each of your birds ❤
That's a lot of preparation, a lot of work, and tremendous dedication to your flock. Not to mention the cost, which has to be great too, even though you do the most cost effective things. I'm incredibly impressed by the way you designed everything for maximum effeciency. You are such a delightful couple and team. If I were a bird, I would want to be YOUR bird. ♥️
If you're on Instagram, I post a lot more short content there of little behind the scenes stuff in my stories and reels. It's just easier to set up my phone and be like "hey, making breakfast and serving, how bout you?" without editing a full length video sometimes. So there's a lot more behind the scenes/get to know me feel over there just FYI. I will definitely try to prioritize sharing that more here though!
You two have invested a large fortune into care of your flock! Much respect to you. There are surely other things you give up to make a quality life for Capri and the birds,
That paper trick on the bottom where you roll it out is ingenious! Making a set-up where they are too is amazing. The lighting and sinks separate wold be my dream. So cool.
Love the video! Seeing Blueberry eat those veggies is so satisfying. I always keep my birds' water dishes seperate from the food because they always drop veggies, pellets, and seeds in them!
That's a great idea to have a sink and freezer/fridge in the birdroom. I wish my birdroom was big enough for those. I do use a separate tub that I use for my dog Grooming business to wash all the perches and trays on the smaller birds cafes so that helps. Thanks for sharing your routine and I hope Dave stops sneezing, lol
You could always consider a little mini set up if that would fit. Like in our quarantine room we have that mini fridge/freezer so that when times are really busy, I can keep a separate set of stuff in there for easier care. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for posting!! I love this kind of content, seeing the regular day & life of birdtricks, and what your methods are. My husband is also allergic to birds (and most animals) and what helped him a lot was getting shots for it. It was very severe for him years ago and now you'd never think he has allergies.
Thank you for yet another great video! You showed your quarantine aviaries and now I´m curious what the quarantine process looks like for new birds coming in and I´d love to learn more about that in a future video. Thank you! You are awesome!
Dave’s ALLERGIC? Jamie, you really are a treasure! Maybe he can get shots 💉for the birb allergy. 😉 You have a remarkably efficient setup. Those big rolls of butcher paper are marvelous. I suppose you have to periodically hose down or power wash the aviary and cage floors. 🚿 The birbs look so very happy. 🦜
Yes, my pressure washer is truly my BEST FRIEND. Especially because pretty instantly, Cressi throws her gloppy mess allllll over the cage bars and it looks gross fast. So best way is definitely to wheel the aviaries outdoors and hose them down! In the winter though, I can't do that very easily at all.
@@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals - I've got asthma and am allergic to every airborne thing out there (every grass, every tree, every mold, dust mites, animals, etc.). I take multiple allergy meds every day, but it was the 2yrs worth of weekly allergy shots that was truly life-changing! Definitely worth the effort & expense to be able to breathe (and not have to rehome my cats). ♡
If I could give you a speed sweeping tip. Pick a sacrificial wall (I would recommend the wall between aviaries) and then you can be more aggressive about sweeping at it. If you sweep faster at the wall center and sweep first and then pick up it will not matter if it goes through to the other side as you have not picked up either yet. It might speed up that part just a little. :)
Hi! I was wondering when you'll be restocking the freeze dried parrot chop on your website!? I tried your birdy bread bundle and all my birds love it. Especially the pellets!
We hope to have our freeze dried up and running again this spring, in the meantime you can email us to get on the waitlist and we are making our way through that list!
Jamie, have you guys ever considered adding supplemental UV in the months when the birds can't get natural UV? I've been considering the Arcadia Bird since I already use Arcadia for my other reptiles
Love your videos😊. Why cannot the parrots get out for fresh air in the snow? Here they have a choice, to go outside no matter how cold or stay in. As long as they get enough food and can warm up inside ( best with a concentrated heatingsource) when they choose, they do fine outside even wintersnowtime.
Their bodies are very sensitive to temperature changes. So long as it's not in the negatives, they could handle the temps if they were acclimated to em - but they aren't. They would be going from a very warm environment to a very cold one, which has the same effect as a draft indoors. Not great!
@@lizziehn5928 ok I just know they can choose in many places here and it gets down to negative 20 degrees centigrade in the winter. Perhaps they are acclimated, they choose to go inside in the warmth if it's windy/wet.
I wish we had a set up where they maybe had an attached door they could go through to go outside if they choose but we don't have anything like that. That would definitely be the dream though, I've seen some set ups at zoos where the animals can choose to be inside or out and it looks really amazing. I think one day when we are on open property without neighbors so close that might be an option. Definitely a huge goal to work towards, I love the idea.
there is one thing I would never do to my birds and that is give them ice cold food I run their food for 30 sec under warm tepid water to take the chill out of it because in the wild they don't eat ice cold food.
Could you make a video about managing asthma/allergies when having birds? I grew up around animals I'm mildly allergic to and can cope with a lot, but I have no practical experience with birds. However, I have fallen in love with birds and my (long term) goal/dream would be to be able to adopt a couple of cockatiels, as there seem to be many in need of new homes around here, and I find their personality absolutely adorable. I would however hate it if I were to have to give them up againg because of asthma problems after having bonded with them. I know there are less dusty bird types, but is it hopeless to be thinking of cockatiels if you have mild asthma?
It's not hopeless! There are several things you can do to help limit your allergies from flaring up. The main thing to have is an air purifier, they work to filter out all that cockatiel dander. If possible, you could also try allergy shots - they've really helped me and a lot of other people by allowing the body to get used to increasing amounts of allergens, though it does take years to fully complete.
That’s a lot of paper you go through, thoughts on composting? Also, would it be okay to put the droppings and excess dropped food and toys out in nature for the birds and squirrels, etc?
The squirrels became total monsters when we tried to do that, wow... our house became the place to be and they became incredibly destructive so we do not do that anymore. I try to reuse toy parts when possible and we've considered a burn bin for the paper but more experienced people have told us it will just get really gross since everything will burn but the feces and it will smell real bad so haven't quite figured out a solution for all that.
@@BirdTricks Good points. We put out 2 bird feeders this year. Glad we did because it has been extra cold. Downside was, a rat got into our crawl space. Ick! I would wonder about the safety of burning the feces also in case it might create air-borne pathogens if one bird gets sick and is not yet showing symptoms. I have no idea if that would be a concern, because I do not have birds. But I love you guys.
Question: living in Idaho in the winter...how do you expose bird's to sunlight for them to manufacture sufficient Vitamin D. I reside in upstate NY and am not convinced those avian lights are worth it or even really work. Interested to know if you've come up with a solution. We have a very long winter here.
In my experience, the complete UV spectrum lights can really help in the winter (both for humans and birds)! They aren't quite as good as the sun, but during the winter they can make for a good replacement. I prefer the strips that can attach to walls around the cage
Great question. We used those lights for years (about 14 years) and never saw a difference when we did our vet check ups. In fact we had a vet recommend the use of them and I was like, ummm... we have been using them for the last 14 years doc... so I have also shared the same feelings as you about how much they actually work. I wish I had a solution but I currently don't. Someone above suggested a set up where the birds can choose to go inside/outside on their own and I think that would be a dream set up!
I went to look for the app and Google told me that it's not compatible with my device because it was developed for an older version of Android. I hope you guys update it so I can try it.
Yeah, he will take allergy medicine if he knows he is going to be around them (like before we film or do shows). It doesn't bother him outdoors when he's around them but indoors it definitely does.
Oh, what animal and flower lovers endur from allergies. We have rescue bunnies and I am allergic to everything. I wear a mask in the bunny room but can still get infections in my sinuses. I would love a bird but know that would be a crazy choice for me to make. Note to Dave and Jaime: Suggest Dave try a Q Mask (lightweight, washable allergy mask) when he can. I bought it from The Allergy Store online in FL. May be available elsewhere. Can talk easily with it on, wash it, let dry overnight, use again, lightweight. I use 2 allergy pills daily, as well as spray. Use OT Nasacort or Flonase if Dave’s doctor allows. The nasal spray helps me I think more than just the tablet medicines. My husband says I have atomic sneezes sometimes😂.
Wait, Dave's allergic to birds?? xDDD ...Ah, when the thing you love hurts you and you do it anyway. My mom's allergic to mangos, but she still eats them (mild allergy, obviously...just a bit of itching and tingling around the mouth)
I really wish you would not be as negative about pet shops. its not the shop owners job to give the best diet out there its up to the costermers to do that if they get the bird
In the wild, most birds will typically go to sleep just after the sun sets and wake up just before it rises. When they have fewer than 12 hours, this can tell their bodies that spring/summer are coming (or whenever their region has the most sunlight) which will in turn trigger hormonal behavior. Since we want to limit this sort of "mood", it's recommended that parrots have at least 12 hours of darkness.
It's normally not an issue at all if the birds are in a clean environment. Many of them are south American species as well, which tend to be less dusty
