    Super handy. Always good to see a new perspective. I just got a 2007 Vstrom 650, and I'm slowly catching back on on the missed maitenance. Got a new fuel pump, and rebuilt all the assembly as it was rusted to pieces from sitting by the last owner, tank cleaned of rust now. Did an oil/filter change yesterday, now onto the spark plugs, air filter, coolant, brake fluid, and I'll save the valve clearances for a while. Bike has 80k miles, and runs like new, and doesn't look that old. My first adventure bike, after having no bike for the last couple of years.

    Thank God for youtube mechanics! My chain began failing last weekend when I still had 200+ miles till home. I made it thankfully, but yeah, now I've got to do some maintenance.

    Hey man thanks for this video:) can I just add to say to people to clean and grease your rear pivot bolt/axle...I just bought a kinda rough - ish dl650 ak7 to do up and it took me 6 days to get the corroded bastard out!! Blowtorch, freezes spray and all sorts of penetrating oils! Anyways just a heads up for anyone, suzuki made an incredible bike with the v stroms, just have to stay on top of simple stuff:) thanks again for posting these vids:)

    Great video😎 but if I can add to it.
    Coppergrease, nickel or cermic grease on the output shaft to stop sprocket seizing on it, makes job easier next time and reduces fretting. .
    Clean output shaft thread and nut with gas, dry then apply threadloxk... .it won't be effective otherwise.

    Prior to fit external o-rings (7:43), you have to put grease - usually included with the chain - to the master link.

      This kit didn't come with a little bag of grease surprisingly. The whole master link was submerged in grease so everything was ready to go! You are right tho... they usually do need to be greased. Good eye!

    I always use the rear brake to hold the wheel when loosening the counter sprocket nut. You can use your right hand to press down on the lever and reach over and loosen the nut with your left arm.

    At 11:10 may I suggest using a smaller inch pound Torque Wrench on smaller sub 20# fasteners ?
    Reason is it's hard for large Torque Wrenches to register accurately that low in the scale.
    But great video thank you.

    I prefer to use an endless chain and remove the entire swing arm. Good oppertunity to grease and inspect the entire assembly

    I''m thinking of bumping up from the 15 to a 16 tooth to help provide overdrive / RPM reduction.
    It's 85mph in West Texas & other interstates and I hear the engine can easily pull this higher ratio.
    Who here has done this simple 16t swap - upgrade ?
    Im only at 12,000 miles so I hope chain has sufficient slack to allow larger front cog.

      My wife's 2009 650 has a 16 tooth on the front. Bike handles it just fine and has a subtle smoothness that my bike doesn't. It does lower rpm and power but not very much. I would switch to a 16 tooth but if I go on any trail, I want that little extra control of the 15 tooth. For the 85mph hwy, I would classify it as an upgrade!

    Can ziptie/bungie that rear lever brake while you break the nut loose if you don't want to shove anything inside the wheel.

    Any thoughts on the best way to brace the rear wheel if you have spoked rims?

      The manual says that you can hold the rear brake when loosening the front sprocket nut but that's a bit difficult when by yourself. For spoked wheels that's the only way to do it tho. Easiest way is to have an assistant press down on the rear brake while you loosen the nut. Hope that helps!

    I purchased one of these chain remover riviter kits but managed to bend the pin end on the medium and large one, why would this happen? Rivets too stiff?

    Thanks for sharing,,I ride a 650 vstrom an I love the bike,,I wish it had a little bit more uhm on take off,,I'm 65 y,old so I wouldn't mind losing a little top end,,I just like pulling up to the young lads an then standing it up,,so anyway I thought maybe you could tell me if you had gotten any better response time on take off with your other gears,,,,thxs an sorry this was so long,, keep having fun,,,gb

      Yeah I had gone down to a 45 tooth on the rear sprocket to get the rpms down at hwy speed. I would say you could go up a couple teeth on the back but they don't make a sprocket bigger than a 47 tooth for the V Strom, at least none that I could find. They do make a 14 tooth front sprocket that would give you a little bit more kick! I can't really speak from exp on that tho...

      Did you lose much torque down low when you changed the sprocket. I'm wanting to put a smaller one on mine as well for better highway performance.

      Rear brake is the best bet for that. So I've heard anyway...

    Great video! Unfortunately, I can't get the nut off the front sprocket. Not even with a 1 meter (3.2 foot) pipe over the wrench. Knocked my bike over in the process. I decided I'm going to take it to a garage.
    EDIT: Yes, I did bend the flap as seen 1:33.

      Use an impact wrench with the bike in neutral and the front sprocket will come lose.

      @@1995TheDude Yeah, I just bought one after struggling and cursing my breaker bar for over an hour :) It made the job really easy. If you wanna save some money, I would recommend getting a corded impact wrench instead of battery or air powered (unless you already own batteries/charger or air compressor). It was only about $80 for a nice electric impact wrench vs. $300-400 for all the equipment and wrench itself for the other types.

      @@jrtayloriv Thanks for the advise! I've got my eye on a battery powered one, though. It shares the same battery with other tools I own, so I don't have to invest in that. How much torque does yours have? (in Nm)

      @@1995TheDude The one I got has ~610 Nm (450 ft-lbs), which isn't super high, but it's more than enough for anything I'll need to do working on my car and bike. But yeah, if you already own the batteries and chargers, cordless would be nice so you're not having to mess around dragging extension cords :)

      Its an 8mm. The only reason for the long extension was to keep my hands from getting in the way of the camera.

      Good chance that if you're adding a tooth, the chain will be a link too short. Usually the chain and sprockets are all changed together to prevent faster wear and tear on them.

      I get about 15,000 on average per chain/sprocket set. I'm not the best at chain maintenance and the regular dirt road riding prob doesn't help with making them last.

      Mainstream Moto Thank you, I was seriously considering this bike but its all the aggro in taking everything apart just to get to plugs and air filter! 😡😡😡 but its better than the Kawasaki versys 650 and the Triumph Tiger 800 they look a nightmare to do!🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I’m still considering this bike as I want a lighter bike, thank you once again for taking the time 👌🤘

      @@pete2109 No wear at all at 11,000 miles and a trip across and out west with plenty of green lanes. I can't believe it, but sprockets and chain measure near new. Have adjusted chain a bit, so it must be wearing every couple thousand miles... Can't believe how little maintenance this bike requires if you don't razz on it too much.

    I forgot to put locktight on my front sprocket and one day it came off while riding. haha it sucked, always use lock tight.

      Hmm, I always thought that the locktight was just kind of a fail safe... I figured that the lock washer prevented the nut from ever moving. Just for educational purposes, is it possible that folding down the lock washer was overlooked? (as shown at 10:14)

      @@mainstreammoto4856 Yes indeed. Also, I just did chain and sprockets on a dl1000. it's definitly a diffrent set up then the 600 ... also found out my slave cylendar was leaking and is why the chain went to shit. my sprockets were fine ... good vid though sir!

    Update: 2017+ is different. There is BARELY enough room to pull the front sprocket off with the chain on it because the clutch housing creates an extremely tight removal of the old sprocket and installation of the new sprocket. The manual doesn't say to take the chain off but it was a major struggle although I finally got it done.

    I geared my wee strom up a tooth up front. Set up for sport touring , so now I can ride at 90mph with the rpms lower. These are set up for dirt roads imo. Buy a ktm for off road, this isn't it. Front fork is low quality fo sure.
