I was listening and watching Journey back in the 70's and 80's, and the "new" Journey is nothing like the classic Journey. No Perry and most importantly, no Smith means NO JOURNEY. I'll take this band over what we have today! And Steve Smith has gone on to be one of the best drummers in Jazz/Fusion there is. He's an amazing talent! One of my all-time favorites!
Steve Smith is the best drummer, he was amazing in Journey, I loved him!! I loved all the guys, they were all the greatest in their own talents, the only guy that always rubbed me wrong was Johnathon Cain, but he was great on keyboard etc! Perry ofcourse Flawless!!🎼🎤 he takes 🥇!! 🎶
He joined in January of 1978 because Herbie Herbert convinced Greg Rollie, Neal Schon and the others to let him in or the records would stop being made. Steve Perry remains and will forever BE the finest lead singer I've ever heard!
I love how Perry never falls out of key, even when he screaming or embellishing. He actually screams to rest. A lesser singer would have to turn away and cough
Someone else commented they love Steve's shorter hair , ME TOO, Iv'e always LOVED his hair short like this, he IS hot in this video ,and I LOVE this song LIVE!!
Wonderful post marie2! Thank you so much! First time I've seen this one. Don't know how I missed it. Wish Sony would realize what they are missing by not releasing all these other videos from the Frontier/Raised on Radio, etc. tours! People would snap them up in a minute. To be able to leisurely watch Steve sing from all those tours with great picture quality-would be heaven...
@@totigerus Hey! I missed your reply when you first did it. Maybe you know what Rubicon references now but I'll tell you anyway! The Rubicon was a river outside of ancient Rome. No Roman general crossed it with his troops because it would be seen that he was going to invade Rome and start a civil war. Eventually Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and took over Rome. To this day it means a point of no return. Once you cross the Rubicon you're committed. "Oops. I didn't mean to." isn't an option for a response. So for this Journey song it's a cool way of saying GO FOR IT! Make your move!
What Style, sings straight from the heart. You feel everything he does. I can not say that about any other. Steve Perry is the best. Needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. and there is a petition online. They won't allow me to post the address.
Big Journey fan, bigger Steve Smith fan. Listen to his fills @ 2:40, 3:00 and 3:40. It was little touches like this and then falling right back in to a simple, powerful groove that makes listening to him with this band fun even after 25 years. The band was history after having fired Smith and Vallory even before Raised on Radio was released. But that opened the door for Smith to let his real talents shine in V.I.
It is so cute becuz God love him but he was not blessed with the talent of dance but he makes up for a thousand times fold with that VOICE, melts me everytime I hear it, and those gorgeous, sexy looks, so humble, love love this man!!❤️ It is crazy to see the better frontmen with great voices (nobody in my opinion holds nothing to Stevie)but seems they are not the best dancers lol! Look at Jon Bongiovi, he cant dance but a great frontman!! Perry is my top since 1980 & always will be, you can ALWAYS pick out when Steve Perry is singing, he is one of a kind❤️🇨🇦
WOW, you and I think alike!! Solo career of Steve Perry amazing. Steve didnt have to do many many albums, what he put out are unforgettable I still listen everyday in 2020! Steve Perry should be in RRHOF on his own and Im so pissed he (they) were passed over for Songwriters HOF this year🤬🤬 Next time👍 Love this man❤️🔥🎤
In my thirty years in music, I've been, done, sang and played everything but drums. I'm here to tell you that singing is the hardest part of any live band; your voice can cave in during the 3rd set of a 4 set gig. At best, we're talkin' bout 4 hours on stage singing. Multiply that times 3 gigs/wk x 50 wks per year...We're talkn' bout some 6000 hrs per year that Steve Perry put on his voice. And that's for ONE year! Not the seven or so he was with Journey...
Jim McBride he used to often sing 5-6 days in a row because Herbie Herbert the greedy manager overbooked the band (couldn’t say no) and burnt him out as a result - SP had asked him repeatedly to reduce the touring schedule. So he quit in 1987.
QUESTION::: Why do all frontmen always go back to face the drummer during vocal breaks, most have a drink but not Stevie, this man was undeniably the best of the best!!❤️🔥🎶🎤🇨🇦
I absolutely & completely dislike the idea & people saying that Steve Perry is the “best singer in the world” - Well, this cannot be more untrue & wrong. - STEVE PERRY is absolutely the very very very best SINGER OF ALL TIME on earth, the KING in this solar system, in this galaxy and any other galaxies known or not yet discovered in the known & unknown universes…in this dimension and in all past present and future dimensions. PERIOD, END OF STORY. NO ONE WAS BETTER, NO ONE IS BETTER TODAY, AND NO ONE COULD EVER BE BETTER… NEVER EVER.
Well, this would explain why he seemed out of it in this performance...every song i have seen from this show he just seem to be going thru the motions...i always thought it was the first signs of burnout. But having the flue makes more sense, he never would show burnout on stage...the audience always came first with this band.
I believe this was the first signs of burnout from Steve. This was the beginning of the tour and he probably realized he had to do another 6 months of performances night after night. Afer this tour is when the band started to fall apart.
Well, this makes sense why he seemed so out of it. I thought it was signs of burnout, but it wouldn't be like him to show that on stage...the audience always came first with this band.
@jerichoe I saw Journey in 1981, 1983 and 1985 (with Randy Jackson) they were on stage about an hour and a half and Steve Perry did not sing all the time. 3 gigs a week times 50 weeks a year times 1.g hours per gig times 7 years is about 2200 hours of singing on stage. How do you get 6000 hours on stage? They play one set maybe one and a half sets a night. Steve damaged his voice on the Escape tour - all the really high notes he did live - he said in an interview. Still greatest voice ever.
Taylor George he never said ever that he damaged his voice, totally bs made up by you. He’s said in tons of interviews that he was totally burnt out from overtouring and that he was “crispy toast”. Couldn’t do it anymore because he lost his love for music.
I noticed the same thing when i first saw/heard clips from this concert...he just seem like he was going through the motions...seem to be some tension on stage(which did occur time to time on this tour). However, compare him on this performance to the Philidelphia show (Frontiers and Beyond) later in the year where his energy level was the most intense I have ever seen.
Every singer is entitled to an off night. Steve is no exception. And frontiers Steve was coked out of his mind. He even admits he was using drugs to keep the energy up at that time.
Patrick Larry he actually had the flu and he has said very clearly in interviews that he NEVER did drugs before or during the shows because they tightened his throat and affected his singing, so stop making up crap. After the shows, different story, he was like see you at sound check.
This is one of my favs. However i don't mind Steve Perrys voice at all. It isnt the same thing live. I can give Steve Augeri credit and say that his is one of the better ones live
Actually Steve blew out his voice too...sadly. I love Journey and agree 100% with you that Steve cant be replaced. But that being said with all the singers that the new line up of Journey has gone through I think the new kid does have some same tone qualities and afflictions to his voice. Im sure Arnel is a huge fan of Steve's just like us.
No he never blew out his voice. He made 'for the love of strange medicine' and reunited with journey on 'trial by fire' listen to those records and live performances. Still sounded superb.
That Perry was a remakable talent is a given., but like many other great singers such as Deyoung and Cetera, he wanted to take the band in a much more commercial direction. Hey,who can blame him, thats where the money is. But I cant recall hearing anything he did on his own compare to this. Maybe its a different genre, but its just not very compelling.
Patrick Larry exactly. His solo albums are amazing different from Journey. His new solo album Traces is really great and he sounds incredible. His voice has deepened and matured well like fine wine.
Love to hear this man sing. I agree Steve is PRICELESS!!!

I’ve always loved Stevie & the Journey guys! Great song & video!👏💯🌟❤️👋
yet another great ( underated) classic. this album was really great!
Well said jrizle86.
That says it all.
Steve Perry will never be replaced.

Señor Steve Perry, the most amazing vocalist of all time! SALUD journeyfans from somewhere in Baja, Mexico!
i listen to this song everyday. it kinda helps me through the day .this is a good song to turn up loud when i go skateboarding ...
Awesome song brings me me back to my teen years
Excellent!

@3:52 AWWWWWW!! I just Love it when This Man Smiles!!!! Miss you Stevie!!!
I wonder how many who loved this song looked into what the Rubicon was. And what it meant historically.
i love this song but i dont know what it means

No one wants to see a concert with out STEVE! Getting tired of playing summer fairs bring Steve back! You'll sell out colosseum

TOTALLY AGREE...The REAL DEAL, FOREVER
Perry rocks
yeah for sure. thats a damn good point. they toured the hell out of perry... his voice lives on...
super soothing vocalism
Never seen this either! Great video! Thanks! :)
Not as firey as some of Steve's other performances, but beautiful none the less. I LOVE YOU STEVE!! You're sorely missed!!!
He's under d weather here look at his sad eyes 😍
superb! simple as...
Steve Perry is cute when he dances on stage

Thats your opinion, Steves Independant recordings were great, they touched your heart and soul, much more ballad in nature, but what a voice

Probably why he sounds hoarse nowadays when he talks! He is wore out!!
Escape and Frontiers are 2 of the most electrifying albums from the 80's.. sorry Arnel, you'll never capture Perry's magic on any of these tunes
Glad you said it, I always get stomped when I do, I agree😃👍100% forsure!!
Yes sir agreed!
I loved Robert, but their music was so much different that Journeys or Steve's great performer. Still has it at his age, love that group,
This is one of the best live recordings I've ever heard, by anyone. Where did it come from? Is there a DVD out there?
QUESTION::: Why do all frontmen always go back to face the drummer during vocal breaks, most have a drink but not Stevie, this man was undeniably the best of the best!!❤️🔥🎶🎤🇨🇦
@MrAndyp007 I know. He would have still been in the group if his accident thing hadnt happened on the mountain. I think thats what happened

Great tune, always liked that riff, very cool. Vocals are much better on album version, but steve will always be king!
I believe this was the first signs of burnout from Steve. This was the beginning of the tour and he probably realized he had to do another 6 months of performances night after night. Afer this tour is when the band started to fall apart.

a little more low

Yeah. Steve's voice was noticeably deeper on the Frontiers album
Jonny Cakes his voice matured and he used vocal characters for songs to use vocal characters for his voice. He never said that he damaged his voice.

Fantastic song, but why does Neal puff his cheeks out like that. He looks like a blooming blowfish lol
he doesn't sem to have energy in any of the videos from japan.

@MrAndyp007 Completely different voices my friend.Listen to Arnel singing Aerosmith or Led Zepellin and you'll see who blows away who.
punkpop102 hahaha Arnel a cover singer vs. Steve Perry a vocal god. Only Pinoy Arnel fans make these dumbass comments.
punkpop102 Arnel sucks.
