  • My good friend Trent picked up a new Crosstrek and we made a video about what its like going from a Modded Crosstrek back to a stock one and how my modded Crosstrek feels for someone who is used to driving Stock Crosstrek's all the time.

    Hey Rick, just came across this video and wanted to let you know that it is a great video. We really enjoyed getting the first-hand experience about our springs and the comments on how they compare on your car vs. a stock car. Keep up the good work, we love watching your videos!

      Thanks so much! Really appreciate it and the springs have been great even though I didn't get the 1" height out of them in front, the ride is much better and having the extra "protection" against sag while loading up the car and towing is excellent.

    Great Video, I have a 2018 Crosstrek limited w/54000 miles on it totally stock. Most of my off road is on unpaved roads in the Baja as I’ve driven it from New Jersey to Cabo and back twice. Im still considering a lift and all terrain tires but not Methods and KO2s because most of my driving is still long distance highway driving. And like you I also have a convertible although not a Porsche it’s a fun summer car for me. It’s a 2010 1Series BMW. After a Z3 and then a Z4 I needed something a little more comfortable for my longer trips. Also thanks for the heads up on the rust issue at the top of the shocks I had it and Subaru did the repairs. My original rubber cover on the drivers side wasn’t even there. I did have a minor issue with my Subaru dealer as they told me there was no such issue. It took them several searches with my continued insistence before they found the information. They even had the replacement covers in stock. I may try to catch up to you on my next trip to Cabo. Traveling to Cabo in February and then back in April. And maybe stopping by to see Trent. The new 2020 Outback Onyx XT with 2 X modes looks really cool. Would that make me a Crosstrek Trader? Thanks again for the great videos. Check out LP Adventure out of Canada looks like they have a lot of great Subaru off road parts and they have a distributor in Phoenix. I only know them from their website I have on experience with them or their products.

      Ted, that all sounds great. I have the LP skid and front bar and their customer service and sales was excellent. I will most likely put on their 1.5 inch lift here down the road. YOur Cabo trips are a blast I bet! And that is some serious driving all the way from New Jersey. Let me know when you are coming through town in February and we can all meet up.
      Great to hear that the strut top video was helpful. I had no idea about the fix until I started having that crazy noise. Have a nice weekend!

    This was really a great comparison as you got quite a few mods going. I agree on the wheels and tires. The Methods and the Ko2s make the car better overall. I basicly got them as my main off roading happens in wintertime on snow but also got lots of forrest trails arrround where I live. I can only agree with you 100% that if you do mod the crosstrek then wheels and tyres make the real difference.

    My car died after 320,000 , I bought myself a 2019 , base Crosstrek, no eyesight or power anything besides the windows and steering, it got a few miles per gallon better than stated, I mean constantly in the 40’s, my buddy sent me pictures of the 2020 Outback XT, and a moment of madness stuck
    Me, and I traded the Crosstrek for the outback xt, man does that thing move; BUT; you need to fully realize the HUGE. difference in mileage between the cars! Night and day! It’s hard to keep your foot out of the turbo, it’s like a kid in a candy store?

      Hi Zach, I looked into it a bit with my 14 Crosstrek and in the end it just didn't seem like it would be worth it. My suggestion would be to go with a slightly less aggressive tire if you don't plan to go off road all that often. If you are going to use it off road regularly then I think the BFG's are hard to beat. About 25K miles on them now and they show almost zero wear so far.
      Recently I drove 3300 miles over about 5 days and the tires are a bit loud on the freeway, but no obnoxious. If I were doing freeway constantly I probably would not go with them however. Best of luck with your choice.

      This will definitely be a video I do as the next summer approaches! Selling cars in AZ for almost 17 years now and I get that question more than you could imagine. Tests basically show that a black car sitting in the hot AZ sun would usually show around 10-15 degrees higher temp than a white car in the same setting. Like Rick said, once you get in the 100+ outdoor temps (the interior temps can read in the 130-170 degree range) it just doesn't matter any longer. Parking in a garage and using the remote engine starter with the ac blasting is a huge help. Keeping a black car clean is the bigger drag.

    I'm considering a Crosstrek, but am concerned about the reliability and lifespan of the CVT transmission especially as I believe it's not made Hyundai, but outsourced.
    I have read that the design/build of the CVT transmission leads to earlier repair issues.
    Any info, opinions or experiences of use?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 роки тому

      Hi Chris, I am no expert by any means, but I have owned a CVT driven Subaru since 2014 when I bought my first Crosstrek. Subaru has had some issues with CVT failures, but they have been proactive in increasing warranties up to 10 years or 100,000 miles for most of the late model CVT cars they sell. I'm not sure if they have done that with 19 and 20 models though.
      The Ascent has had a number of CVT related failures, but Subaru has it figured out now from what I understand. Sounds like they went a bit too fat in trying to program the CVT to provide maximum MPG. Because of this the chain had too much slack at certain times and caused failures. At least that is a loose interpretation of what I know.
      My 18 Crosstrek has not had any issues with the CVT so far in 15,000 miles. None of the hesitation my 14 model had from Park to D, Or R to D. My 14 was also loud and would have an occasional strange shift now and then. Other 18 owners initially were describing a slow speed hesitation that felt like the car was searching for the correct gear. I have not had that issue personally and I have not had anyone mention it to me in many months. I think some of the things people who are new to CVT's "feel" are problems are normal CVT things that you just have to get used to. In my opinion Subaru has done a very good job making the "shifting" feel like an automatic, but it is still different and takes time to get used to. Not to to take away from real CVT failures that some have had.
      As to the longevity it is hard to say because they have not had them in their cars for all that long at this point. I like the way they feel and most of the time it feels like a normal automatic. The biggest benefit to the CVT for Subaru is in programing them to return better mpg and they work well with eyesight. Not sure if that helps at all, so feel free to let me know if you have other questions.

    Stock market spring it’s soft for sure. I know that after market spring way better. I have eibach springs. More stiffer and handles a lot better. When I was sitting on driver side section with stock springs , I feel like the front in is going to dive in while driving in freeways.

      So far I liked the eibach springs. What’s the difference between rallitek springs vs eibach springs?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 роки тому

      No performance change that I have noticed at all. The weight difference is only about 5lbs per wheel so not too bad. The he skid plate and bar on the other hand added 48 lbs to the front. Haven't noticed any change acceleration wise with that add on either.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 роки тому

      The RalliTEK springs that I put on are designed to keep your car from sagging when the car is overloaded with people and cargo. They are a bit stiffer than stock, but you don't feel it on a day to day driving basis. My guess is the eibach's are more performance oriented? Not sure as I haven't checked them out.

      Hard to say? The KO2's definitely "squeal" a bit more when you have to hit the brakes hard. Can't say they don't stop as well though.

    I'm actually in the mindset process of trading in my 2018 Subaru WRX Ltd for a 2019-2020 Subaru Crosstrek Ltd. I know there will be a drastic power difference but I am curious, in your own experience, how does your crosstrek handle with lane departures, getting in and out of traffic, etc. How is the CVT transmission? Cheers!

      I own a 2019. Personally I don't feel the speed is a big issue. My last car was an Infiniti g35.. Just gotta remember the crosstrek is not a sports car . Getting in traffic ,up to highway speeds, not a problem. In fact, I still find myself being the one passing people all the time or in the fast lane cause cars are only as fast as the drivers are willing to take them. I will also say that their does feel a difference in warm weather opposed to cold weather. If the crosstrek felt as "quick" in the warm weather as it does in cold, it would be perfect if that makes any sense.

      Yep, the CVT will easily keep up with traffic (80+ on 70E/W in/out of Columbus)...it just takes an extra second or 3 to get there, but once there, smooth sailing (with a bit of road noise)

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 роки тому +1

      Andr'e great comments from the guys so far! I went from an 11 STI to my 14 Crosstrek and its really all about mindset when you switch from a car like an STI or WRX to a Crosstrek. I wanted the versatility of the Crosstrek and although I enjoyed the STI I just didn't love it. As far as lane departure and traffic it really does fine in my opinion. You won't be pulling out like you can in the WRX, but it handles traffic with no issues and can cruise all day on the highway at 85mph. Going up grades on the highway you'll have to play around with the gears a bit to stay at speed, but its just fine and your mpg will be better as well...and no premium fuel.
      Personally I have learned to really like the CVT and have no issues with my 18. You can tell now and then that it isn't a "normal auto, but its smooth and easy to drive...and you have paddles if you need them. I made a video awhile back comparing the Crosstrek and my wife's WRX if you want to give it a watch. Best of luck and let me know if you have other questions. azdroptopyt@cox.net ua-cam.com/video/5nRolfFzJ3g/v-deo.html

      Once you are at the 6mo to end of your lease term, you can get lease loyalty that will pay your 1st payment of your next lease (up to $500). • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 роки тому

      Not real sure to be honest. I bet it wouldn't change the feel all that much. I really think the benefit came from the weight of the skid and front bar. The springs really got rid of the "heavy" feeling I was having after the skid/bar install.
