I used to live near here, supposed to a pumping station to stop this. But yeah the housing estate that was built over 40 years ago shouldn't have been built in 1st place! Councils dont bother clearing grids after autumn anymore. And still more houses will be built on flood plains like this!
The residents should be able to sue individual council members who allow building on flood plain without adequate drainage and those in charge of ensure drains are clear after autumn.
Wigan was even worse at the Saddle, yet again built all the new property and retail park on a flood plain, right next to the River Douglas. when will developers and councils take the blame for pure stupidity.
Oh dear, poor people. Although slightly short of full sympathy because "why would anyone buy property on a flood plain?", not improved by a banked roadway with insufficient cut-throughs, one has to think that the best way of preventing this is to stipulate that the housebuilders and councils will have to ensure that they have set aside capital funds or full insurance to stomp up on all compensation for any flooded new builds before planning consent can be granted. That'll soon make sure that they plan properly for flood disaster in the environment.
@@davidbadcock2225 the problem with this one is the flood defences etc were recently done, so clearly not working. This one is quite mild to elsewhere I have just been filming, so keep a look out for parts 2 & 3.
@@gailnadezna9091 Wow! Happy NY to you too, Gail. Unless someone hacked the EA (I assume you meant to write the Environment Agency) work schedule database and any reports of the conditon of local brooks, I'm not sure that anyone outside of the immediate area of the brooks in question would be able to know that or find it out quickly or easily. I get your point, however, the risk assessment remains the same and the fundamental issue. Any brooks would not naturally be cleared out, EXCEPT by floods. Man interferes and seeks to control the water enviroment (ignoring Beavers for a moment), so my argument would merely shift to suggesting that IF the housebuilders and local council that granted the planning permission want to delegate all responsibility for building on a known flood plain, then they should pay the EA to do the work or, as previously stated, be bonded for the consequences of that not being carried out. The point of principle (weirdly interpreted as being high-and-mighty) is that those that take the initial risk should not be mitigated from the consequences of their decisions as it sets up "Moral Hazard". Anyone can pocket profit if the costs are paid by someone else. Any long-term business should be operating with CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). My apologies if these further 'points of principle' comments ratchet up your view of being high-and-mighty. They are no solace for the poor people suffering the 'disaster' but just an outed thought on how to START to prevent this kind of thing happening all over the country again and again, as new-builds being flooded are not a new event.
Peel Holdings could donate a percentage of their vast profits for canal upkeep, they are busy building on every canal bank they can seize for "water vies". Bridgewater has burst its banks, never known in a lifetime (or longer) Who is responsible for River maintenance? We used to dredge till EU stopped it. We don't have EU rules now and could easily go back to old and wiser traditions.. Water critters are fine if the dredge material is simply piled on the banking for a day or two, they are soon able to find the water again.
Happy New year. Thanks for the video. When the council planning departments approve new builds on land that has always held on to rainwater, its no suprise we end up with flooding. I feel very sorry for the residents. Andy Burnham your guided bus way is stumped at one night of rain! Quit the 15 minute city narrative! It won't work....
What a new year for these people who live here and everytime they build new houses in these areas are always full of flood and this the reason I will not downsize my house for these shit houses that do nothing but flood every year and the insurance companies love it and do not but put your insurance up for flood defences and sill it don’t solve the problems
Council and housebuilders to blame. Knowingly built on a flood plain.

Let`s build on a flood basin, It`ll be ok without suitable drainage!
The residents should be able to sue individual council members who allow building on flood plain without adequate drainage and those in charge of ensure drains are clear after autumn.
It's a beautiful place to live just a shame about the flood❤
Happy new year, I hope everything is OK with people who leave near lilford park 😮😮😮
Don't build on the flood plain! If only they would listen!
Developers should be held liable for this if they knowingly built on a flood plain !
😅 ace floodbasin

Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
They never listen they just state housing targets. Sorry for homeowners but should never have bought these houses
Shocking sights, thinking of those people
Happy New Year Colin. I hope you are well above the high tide line there....
same to you, and yes its a mile or so from where i live

How come the back gardens are not flooded
Probably a bit like your brain when they was handing out common sense, they just missed out
Maybe rainwater has already seeped into the soil. Or good drainage.
Poor people must be horrendous. Still shocks me that houses are built and people actually buy them next to rivers.
