some modern ones also use it, as far as I can remember
Modern Russian tanks still employ this method, by dumping diesel into the hot exhaust manifold to let it evaporate into a thick smoke screen.
As most military engines are diesel, and the smoke system is downstream the engine in the exhaust, it doesn't damage the internals to make smoke, unlike putting diesel through a petrol engine!

6:15 Fun fact! Trophy truck race teams replace every single spherical bearing and heim joint (also know as rod ends or "rose joints") after every single race! Often times the parts being removed are still in perfect working order with minimal to no play/wear, but are still replaced as a "safety measure" but mainly because any failure of these components mid race would effectively take them out of contention, forcing the driver to limp the car to the next checkpoint or cause a wreck. Considering these cars cost upwards of half a million to 2.5 million, I'd hate to be the race tech who didn't replace one of the suspenion joints because "it was still in perfect working order/was well within the manufacture's spec" only to have it fail while we were in contention for the lead of the race. Ending that race weekend/costing the driver the race win.

I live in iran. In my country Smugglers actually use this trick to loose the cops. Nothing will happen to your engine if it's naturally aspirated. But let me tell you something. It's recommended to use fuel pump instead of your windshield cleaner. Because that definitely won't be enough to make the cops blind, specially in high speeds.
