true, but which are you gonna click on more as the average viewer? No one cares about someone who saved a club. They want to know why someone almost destroyed a club.
This was really emotional for me as a Bradford City fan who lived through those dark days. On the flip side, it was always an utter joy to watch Carbone playing in claret & amber. The most talented player we've ever had. And a wonderful person as well. UTFC CTID.
Benito Carbone came from Sheffield Wednesday who went down the season before with Sheffield wednesday that team with Paolo di canio and stefanovich should have never been relegated. Back then managers took a gamble but imagine if that would have paid off. Chelsea started the stupid spending after that at least clubs like Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday didn't trry to buy back in again. to be honest the championship is full of prem clubs now just the best players leave.
I still remember we played Wednesday in one of the cups the year before we got promoted to the Premiership. Carbone did an amazing turn and shot from the halfway line, almost scoring. Me and my friend just turned and looked at each other and said "You don't see that in the championship!"
You spoke so eloquently about how football clubs are so much more than a team, they’re part of the social fabric of our communities- here’s wishing you and your grandad many more Saturday afternoons together, big love to you both x
@@stuntpeggnievethis should have been about Messi. I've never seen such mismanagement and poor delegation of leadership to a lesser leader.... And the debt is phenomenal.
Fair play to Carbone there. Not many players would be so honourable. But if you think about it, if he'd refused and the club went bust, he'd have got next to nothing and had a reputation for being a club breaker, so he did himself a favour as well. Nice to see comments from Bantams fans who respect him
Carbone would have been paid in full. When a club goes in to administration, there is something called the Football Creditors Rule, and players, managers, (possibly agents) and other clubs get every penny owed to them. In the case of Portsmouth, £20m went to football related debts, local creditors suffered like St Johns Ambulance not getting anything of the near £3k they were owed which probably means a lot for the local organisation. Kanu made a similar deal to Carbone
The human element from a local community point of view is always touching from nieve.what a club means to its city and town.this is why she is the best football content on UA-cam hands down 👏
The unmentioned “Brad’s ford” pun on the whiteboard, Nieve? That is exactly what I come here for. The emotionally uplifting shots of football crowds set against Sigur Rós tracks is just a bonus.
Benito Carbone stills wants to be a part of Bradford City. He's applied for the manager's job at least two or three times in the last decade, most recently in 2023 when we sacked Mark Hughes, yet he never even makes the rumoured shortlists.
Nieve, I don't know how you come up with these ideas for videos but all I will say is keep doing what you are doing. I remember these events from 2 decades ago but from afar. This video brought it to life. You are awesome. Keep it up.
I'm a Stockport fan and we had many years of ding dong battles with Bradford ... matters not ... a proper club with passionate support and I wish them well ... and your videos are a word apart from any on YT, class!

I was lucky to have an Uncle who not only took me to my first games, but was a true hero that saved others during the Bradford Fire and was honoured for it. For me there's no people and no team i could be prouder of and it makes things like the Capital One Cup Run and the Chelsea FA Cup game mean all the more to me.
The Bradford Fire Disaster is one of those events that should be remembered a lot more but has been forgotten about, largely because Heysel happened a few weeks later. I live locally and know quite a few people who were there that day all of them have PTSD. At work we have to remind the external Fire Safety trainers to not use footage from it in their training materials because it has triggered people.
@@michaelscott7166 I did a fire training course while working at Hampton court palace about 25 years ago, and they used a lot of footage from that day. I'll never forget the policeman who caught fire despite being on the pitch such was the heat, that was an eye opener
This was great. We still haven't recovered financially from that second season in the PL. The ground, offices and land around the stadium were sold in 2003 and it remains that way today. Staying up in the PL on the final day of the season was incredible, but with the benefit of hindsight we'd have been better off going down. Carbone will be fondly remembered for this. I can see him coming back as manager one day (he's said he would like to) and he'll receive a hero's welcome.
First time I've seen one of your videos and I thought it was superb. Very well crafted and researched, with perfectly placed humour and emotion. I've never given Bradford a second thought but by the end I was really happy to see them still kicking and see how much it means to the fans.
Great video again Nieve. Coventry played Bradford at Highfield Rd in the final day of that season. It would be the last league game at Highfield Rd, both clubs were relegated, the game finished 0-0. I was at the game, although I don’t support either club, however all these years later the significance for Bradford & Coventry meeting in that day is not lost on me. I wish Bradford well, they have incredible loyal and passionate fanbase and should be at the very least a Championship club.
We drove up from Reading to see that game. Awful game, but the friendly banter between the fans was memorable. Coventry: "Going Down, Going Down", City: "So are we, so are we", followed by City "We went down before you".
@stevewallis1685 The first person I met and befriended at university was from Reading. It was Sir Alok Sharma. I remember boasting that Bradford City were getting better and he said to watch out for Reading on the up. Hmm! What happened to both?
Carbone is a hero for that he saved Bradford City by leaving and as a Huddersfield fan I wouldn't want Bradford or Leeds to go bust because that would mean no derby days to get excited about
As a City fan, I miss our derbies and banter. It’s been too long. We’re only one league apart so who knows? Maybe in a season or two we can renew our rivalry?!
Spot on, every town or city needs a football club, of course most fans love to see their rivals slipping up but to go bust, never. I'm a Bradford City fan.
That ending LOL! Brilliant video as always Nieve. Hope to see more videos coming from you soon. It's videos like this that got me into watching and following soccer after many years.
Thank you. A very high level of presentation. Factual, emotional, humorous and enlightening. Never commented before, but you are emminantly watchable. Please keep up the great work 👍
Hi Nieve, the story behind the Bantam nickname is to do with the recruitment of local soldiers in the Bradford area. Valley Parade on match days during the first world war was used as a recruiting centre probably like Burnden Park and other grounds in the UK were and the battalions raised were called Bradford Pals or Bantam battalions. Some of these Bantams men 5feet 3 inches in stature or less joined the Bradford Pals 16th/18th or the Yorkshire Bantams mostly raised in Leeds. Great video, Benito is a local hero who put Bradford City AFC before money.
Another brilliant masterpiece Nieve My mental health aint great atm and any Football video cheers me up so thank you so much for what you do Nieve . I would love to see Bradford get promoted and to see them back in the PL one day 😊
My adopted club. It is so worth the 150 mile round trip every home game. This club has got under my skin ... and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's a absolute cliché but the people are the fabric of this wonderful club and the people of Bradford deserve more.
A lot of people don't like or "get" football and the hype around it, Nieve gets it and knows how to capture the emotions that surround the beautiful game. Thank you, Nieve, for what you do and greetings from Croatia, small country with great results in penalty shootouts at World Cups! We never won a penalty shootout in a European competition (lost to Turkey at Euro 2008 and to Spain in UEFA Nations League final in 2023), but on the other hand we won all 4 World Cup penalty shootouts. 😮😁
I’m a scouser and a massive Liverpool supporter. I have lived in Bradford for 9 years now and am a ST holder along with my son at Bradford City. We love football and wanted to support our local club. We do get to some away games too and have had some amazing days. I’m just dreading the day Bradford city play Liverpool again.. 🤣
Carbone was a fantastic player back in the day but I perhaps saw him as a selfish type who played more for himself than the team. Maybe I’d have judged him differently if I’d watched him week in week out playing for my team? So hearing he made this financial sacrifice in order to keep Bradford going has come as a bit of a surprise. Fair play to the fella.
My dads a Bradford city fan and you dont hear much about them in canada so this was really cool to see you talk about them. Ive been to england to see them once but it was a 0-0 so really hoping i can go back sometime
I remember going to Valley Parade to watch an England Youth team game maybe 25 years ago? I recognised the stands from your opening shots. Will go back for a proper match day on the strength of this. Footie is Community. You do this so well.
I’m a lifelong Newcastle United supporter and I remember when you could pay in at the turnstiles, I remember saving up and pouring my pennies onto the counter lol. Great video!
Very well made and engaging video and appearance of the last sentence at the end of the video made it just so more meaningful about people and about football.
At first, I didn't think Bradford - I was thinking more of Sunderland with Jack Rodwell after refusing to cancel his contract after relegation! Never knew Bradford's issue and with an ex-Sheffield Wednesday player (my team!). Glad Carbone thought about the fans - not many players would care... like Rodwell.
Excellent research and journalism, even though im 63 i dont remember any of this, us what s beautiful name NIEVE is....ive subbed, your humour is tremendous and had me in fits....thank you for your content. ⚽️👍
Stan Collimore only played in 7 games and scored 2 goals...one of which was an incredible overhead kick against Leeds so was worth every penny. I bizarrely have fond memories of watching City during this time. My brother and I were season ticket holders and went to every game. Now my brother has moved to Canada so when i go to see City now it just cements how much i miss him.
"Ehhh... Mister Richmond... I donn-a think-a 40k a week-a will be enough-a!" "Well youth, how's about a free house.. in Bradford?" "Ayy it's-a a deal-a!" ¯\(°_o)/¯
To be fair, probably the Bradford chairman, made a bad choice to paying a big name player. Carbone was just a decent player. No where in the ranks of Ravanelli, Vialli, Dimatteo, Casiraghi, Zola, Masi Makarone and other big Italian players coming at the time in England. Probably that is the only Italian , the chairman could get to play for a small club like, Bradford ( no offense). Again to be fair, the chairman made all the unfortunate decisions. He seems he met well, but had a very lousy luck. The segment between 4 : 58 and 5 : 21 is freaking hilarious.😂😂😂 . Also class act by Beni Carbone. I know it was a long time a go , but well done, mate. I tip my hat to him. Great video as always. But wish the videos are more frequent.❤
Always love and respect Benito. Those days from 1996 until 2000 were some of the best years of my life.... All thanks to Mr Richmond. Yes he gambled and we still feel the affects to this day but I wouldn't change it. The club has reduced me to tears of joy, depression, worry and more.... But I wouldn't change it ❤️
Really love this. I feel the same way growing up watching Bolton push into Europe and players like Okocha and Djorkaeff wearing the shirt. It’s half the reason we are a world away from the Premier League now, but you can never take away those memories.
American here, actually went to see Bradford City play v Leicester in the EPL in August 2000 - I remember Carbone was playing in that match. Was actually there to attend the Carling Weekend Festival in Leeds, but this game was on so did them both. Too bad they went on to get relegated that year and never came close to coming back up, but was a great experience and nice stadium...
Terrific video even for non Bradford footy fans. I remember Richmond doing a Risdale but didn't know how bad it really was. Oh, ahe hint of Philomena Cunk in the presentation style was also very amusing.
My Dads side are all Bradford City season ticket holders. Seen there rise to the Prem and fall, to going to the league cup final. He said its been a rollercoaster😂
The tasteful way random building geometry goes in and out of focus in Nieve's videos will surely be studied by film scholars in the future. They probably won't have a clue who played for whatever 3rd or 4th tier football team she talked about each week but the art transcends the subject matter. Martin Scorsese once said "Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out" - I think he'd agree that this... this is cinema.
Not a Bradford City fan, but I'm now a Benito Carbone fan. You'd like to think that the chairman of the time had the best intentions, as it didn't seem that he was in it to turn a profit for himself at least. He was just ill-equipped and too hopeful that a few big players would be enough to cement them as an EPL team. Hopefully one day soon Bradford are at least a Championship club again. Whilst I'm not a fan they're one of the clubs I've always looked at in football games I play, and all through my childhood their colours were interesting to me as not many teams use them. But I'm from Glasgow, which is like 200 miles away from Bradford haha!
Bradford were relegated alongside my club Coventry City and Manchester City as well, at the end of the 2000-2001 season, and look where Manchester City are now.
As a Vale fan I’ve always felt utterly bemused that Bradford have hung around the bottom division for so long hopefully we both go up together this year but City are definitely a Championship club and they would with bigger away followings and a few thousand more home supporters fill that stadium As far as the premier league is concerned personally I’ve always felt it’s a poison challis if it goes wrong as this brilliant video proves Look at Luton now possibly back to back relegation and Huddersfield currently league one
A'reyt Nieve.Bradford City are a football club. They were however a Rugby League club in a former life. As Manningham, the area where I grew up, they were the first champions of the Rugby League. Note that the other football club called Bradford adopted their then address in brackets to distinguish themselves as (Park Avenue). They also have faced extinction, but does any other club have brackets? I joke that the city derby is played between Motherwell and Celtic for the historic team colour links. Imagine if a busload of Bradfordians were in a video at the game wearing their replica shirts?
You always deliver very interesting content with quality factual information along with your great sense of humor. Your You Tube channel is excellent, with exceptional presentation, camera work and various, including unusual, subject matter. Thank You Nieve Well Done
Would be keen to see you tackle Plymouth Argyle, who are having a bit of a turgid time now but who have had a series of rough times for the last 11 years. Plymouth as well is the largest city in England to have never had a first division team, it’d be fun to get a read on what that does to a place
Cracking video again Nieve, thank you very much. Should the slide at 1:05 say the 00/01 summer transfer window, rather than 01/02? I thought Bradford went down in 2001. Keep up the brilliant work, your content is some of the very best!
Different sport I'm talking about here, but this is a similar situation to that of Kimi Raikkonen when he moved to the Lotus Formula One team in 2012, driving for an exorbitant price and almost finishing off the Lotus team in the process, who have since become Alpine.
Hello. I'm new to the chat. I just wanted to update your channel followers concerning the US Division 1 college (university) men's futbol national championship. The 64-team tournament concluded with the University of Vermont victorious over Marshall University (Huntington, WV). The score was 2-1 in extra time. The match was in Cary, NC. I'm from the northeast corner of New York State near Lake Champlain. This tournament title has dominated the local news cycle for the past four weeks. The University of Vermont is located in Burlington. I believe that I forgot to mention that before. Ms. Pegg, you have quite a channel here. My favorite side is Syracuse University in central New York State. They won that same title in 2022.
Fair play to Benito Carbone. The title could have just as legitimately been "The footballer who saved a football club." Fantastic video, fantastic channel.
Exactly my thought!!!
By definition this was not fair play to him. A gentleman to sacrifice what he was owed and settle his contract unfairly on his side.
To be fair, the title of the video includes "ALMOST" and I get that the world is too black-and-white for such nuances these days for people wanting a singular answer.
Who was the scruffy looking Spanish player who moved from Real Madrid to Bolton? Some team they had back then
@@thebagelsproductions You're probably thinking of Ivan Campo.
@68Boca Ivan Campo - that's him
Love Nieve's videos. Always something different and always insightful.
My club ♥Thank you for covering this!
Appreciate you watching! Really enjoyed it at valley parade
Bradford PA
Terrific video even for non Bradford footy fans. I remember Richmond doing a Risdale but didn't know how bad it really was. Oh, ahe hint of Philomena Cunk in the presentation style was also very amusing.
Great video as always Nieve. I love watching your videos. I love your enthusiasm and passion for the game.
Watching from SCOTLAND. BRILLIANT Channel.
My Dads side are all Bradford City season ticket holders. Seen there rise to the Prem and fall, to going to the league cup final. He said its been a rollercoaster😂
This is fantastic storytelling Nieve
She won't go out with you.
@@terrybunch7313worth a try 😂
The tasteful way random building geometry goes in and out of focus in Nieve's videos will surely be studied by film scholars in the future. They probably won't have a clue who played for whatever 3rd or 4th tier football team she talked about each week but the art transcends the subject matter. Martin Scorsese once said "Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out" - I think he'd agree that this... this is cinema.
Great to see you back Nieve. Don’t wait so long for your next video please. Very entertaining 👍
Great Work guys!👏
Bradford were relegated alongside my club Coventry City and Manchester City as well, at the end of the 2000-2001 season, and look where Manchester City are now.
I know, I can’t believe it. The only team to have lost the last 4 games in a row out of the 3 clubs!
Brilliant love it 😂@@stuntpeggnieve
That's oil money for you 👀
As a Vale fan I’ve always felt utterly bemused that Bradford have hung around the bottom division for so long hopefully we both go up together this year but City are definitely a Championship club and they would with bigger away followings and a few thousand more home supporters fill that stadium
As far as the premier league is concerned personally I’ve always felt it’s a poison challis if it goes wrong as this brilliant video proves
Look at Luton now possibly back to back relegation and Huddersfield currently league one
A tale of 3 cities
Your knowledge of football and football history is impeccable.
The phrase "up the chickens" was not something I expected to read when looking up Bradford City. 🤣
Hey! No fowl puns 'round 'ere xp
Loving the use of Hoppipolla by Sigur Rós in the video. I can’t think of a more emotive song.
Came to the comments to say the exact same thing. Stockport County fan who emigrated to America in the 90’s. Love the videos.
9:29 🤣😂🤣 Golden
Upload more often!! We miss you StuntPegg!
This channel deserves more views and subs indeed, great work
Posting videos more often would help .
Brilliant interview Sam Bradford city fans r sensational . Very proud of u indeed .❤️😀👍⚽️xxxx
Top notch video yet again. These videos brighten any Monday.
As an American, thank you for the knowledge. Fantastic channel! EDIT: I should mention, I am a Swindon Town fan.
You always deliver very interesting content with quality factual information along with your great sense of humor. Your You Tube channel is excellent, with exceptional presentation, camera work and various, including unusual, subject matter. Thank You Nieve Well Done
the best football channel on YT
I can’t quite put my finger on why. But this channel is incredible.
Yet more TOP quality content Nieve.
That last line, was genius and very emotive.
Appreciate this a lot, thank you Stevie
Absolutely love your football videos well done!!!👍
Finally, Nieve visits the Greatest Football Club. 🎉
Super City!
Fair play and respect to Carbone
8:06 YOU CAN'T GET FANS LIKE NIEVE🤣🤣 love it
7 bedroom house...7 bathrooms... got to use one every day of the week, stops problems with the plumbing😉
Your videos prove that football is more than a games
Thank-you Nieve. Nice to see SHD making an appearance. C.T.I.D.
How have i only just found your channel. Great video. Guess ive got to binge watch a lot now. See you in a week ❤
my favourites are The Stadium that Bankrupted a Football Club and I walked the distance between the 4 closest derbies, ENJOY!
@danielwilder7835 thanks for the recommendation 😀
Would be keen to see you tackle Plymouth Argyle, who are having a bit of a turgid time now but who have had a series of rough times for the last 11 years. Plymouth as well is the largest city in England to have never had a first division team, it’d be fun to get a read on what that does to a place
Great video about Bradford FC . Live watching your videos!
Cracking video again Nieve, thank you very much.
Should the slide at 1:05 say the 00/01 summer transfer window, rather than 01/02? I thought Bradford went down in 2001.
Keep up the brilliant work, your content is some of the very best!
Carbone clearly had an integrity that is sadly lacking from many professional footballers.
Peggy your thumbnail poker faces is what brought me to your channel.
I thought the final screen glitched for a second - nice touch Nieve. Great video!
The title should have been The Chairman that almost Bankrupted a Football Club
I love Sunderlands nickname, the black toms
Nice story Nieve ... Very informative and you know your stuff
Really appreciate your content 🎉❤
unique content .bravo. animated hands are such an excellent effect,
another great video Nieve thanks for sharing and making.
Great vid. Such a masterpiece
They need to rename a stand after him and one day when we’re loaded, invite him back for a testimonial and fill his pockets.
