  • Some viewers have asked for a very basic first step in sailing so here it is!
    Youngest daughter Millie is out sailing with us in Croatia at the moment and for the first time decided she needed a sailing lesson incase we all fall overboard and she has to sail herself!
    So this starts from heading out from the anchorage, getting the sails up and setting them to the conditions we had (light breeze from the back quarter)
    Those were not the conditions we had when we arrived in Croatia however. A massive thunderstorm and 50 knots winds greeted us sailing into Dubrovnik! So look out for that in Episode 26!!

    High 5. Wow you can be very proud of her. She 'listens' superbly. Asked questions intelligently. No wonder she was a good student and you are proud of her. Very few young people have the capacity to listen well and absorb.

      Yes we are very proud, Millie has the ability to learn things she doesn't really have much interest in, something that's always eluded me! She graduated Cambridge with a first in history last year without any previous interest in history!

    It's great to see a lass gaining real skills in life. Learning to sail a boat and presumably being able to tack up a horse, they must be the two most environmental forms of transportation on earth. Well done Millie.

      @judyaslett2 4 роки тому +1

      Well she’s been riding since she was one year old starting on a Shetland called Delilah so the transport has always been environmentally friendly! You are right - being outside in the natural world is so important

    Excellent sense of guidance and balance on board, always looking for a safe place, and whenever she can, she sat down. I think it was a recap of sailing lessons from when she was younger, a good student, she also has good teachers too, congratulations to all three of you.
    Kind regards.

    I’ve not looked at other comments so apologies if it’s been mentioned. Hats off for sharing what you probably ‘just do’, but for beginners it’s really good to see. Even hoisting the main sail is a lot for a beginner to take in. Stepping back and talking through what just happened is important so each time it’s done the different actions make practical sense.
    I would personally be thinking about LJs and clipping on as a habit but that’s just me....and your boat is bigger than mine... keep safe. Nick S.

    It’s great seeing my own boat, a HC48T, being handled by somebody else...
    Having the same boat makes me love your videos even more.

    I became a fan as a result of having much more time available to sit in front of the tv with Covid. I am living vicariously through you two. It's like I'm getting out of the house ;)
    Please follow this video with one showing how the heck you carry on when the wind is in front of you. I know the answer is tack, but your excellent instructional manner might just finally break through to me.
    Fair Winds!

    As a sailor with some years experience I was a little surprised to see the 2 hatches just aft of the mast open when you were teaching you daughter to raise the main sail in case she was to go through omne of them I know you are in a warm climate and want air circulation in the boat just a thought enjoy your videos and commentary on your land falls

    Don't forget to check state of all reefing lines before raising main. Jam cleats on on all unused reef lines should be open.

    Don’t forget too tell her too watch out for the boom,it’s easy to have a suddenly gib. Especially near land we’re the wind can change quickly.

  • @davidclarke7728
    @davidclarke7728 3 роки тому +1

    You didn’t seem,to mention the topping lift and I thought when you were hoisting the main the boom was still in its crutch, not a criticism, maybe I missed something.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому

      That's right. The topping lift is completely superfluous on this boat, I only have it as a spare main halyard, which is just as well because we needed it this season. Crutch and a vang is a good way to go.

    Is there a reason your main sheet is so long? It seems you let the sail out until it touched the shroud and there was still a huge pile of rope left. If you can't let it out any further....why all the rope?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому +1

      Yes good spot. I have actually shortened it. It was the end of a roll that I got and I didn’t chop it straight away as I like to properly whip the end and I had a couple to do so did them all together. I do keep it a bit long on Fair Isle though as I sometimes sit in the doghouse and it’s nice to control the sheet from there.

    There are so many tripping and toe-stubbing hazards on a boat. I'm surprised you guys sail barefoot.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 роки тому

      Wearing shoes is such a PITA! I did originally wear them when we were in the higher latitudes for obvious reasons and thought, as you do, that I would have to keep wearing them in the heat as we went South because I bashed my feet quite a lot in the early days and it hurts even in deck shoes! But you learn your boat, same as having open hatches that I would never have done while sailing before. I can say in 3 years bare foot there have been no stubbed toes thus far!

    Crikey I am glad you are not teaching me, sheets overhanging walkways and hatches open everywhere with a novice wandering the deck !!! #brokenleg 😎😂

    • @kevinfisher1345

      She might be a novice sailor, but she is not inexperienced hanging around on sailboats or novice wandering the decks. You can see pic's of them all, including their kids, when younger years ago. It is just now that she actually wants to learn how to sail instead of simply just letting daddy do it all.

      The water is so warm in the Med, short of being knocked unconscious by the boom, you can float about for hours. I'm sure we can look forward to MoB display soon?
