- The adventure begins!
This is the very first episode of 'Sailing Fair Isle', having sold our house and most of our possessions we are embarking on a trip around the world. Join us as we sail along the South coast of the UK to Plymouth to join ARC Portugal. A rally organised by the World Cruising Club to sail from Plymouth to Lagos in the Algarve.
In this episode we sail the whole Southern coast of England spending time in the Solent, the mecca of British sailing. Play with seals in a fantastic anchorage on the Isle of Wight, Newtown Creek. We visit some of our favorite UK ports such as Dartmouth, Salcombe and Torbay. This is a shake down cruise to prepare to take on the Bay of Biscay sailing from Plymouth direct to Bayona in Spain.
What we don't know is that the whole fleet will be scattered by a force 10 storm in Southern Biscay and we will be faced with very difficult sea conditions in the notorious Bay of Biscay.

OUR ADVENTURE:
We are sailing slowly around the world in our classic cutter rigged sailboat 'Fair Isle'. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage.
We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat.
Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal.
Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2!
The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar.
We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others.
Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few!
When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, and on to the Pacific.

Beautiful boat and lovely scenery, engaging hosts, well written script and polished narration, excellent editing and sound balance. And ... lovely sailing too! What’s not to love about this? :)
Yes but plan for old age as well none of this will count then
@@Alakwe Have you actually lived a life or are you just a miserable pissant ?
@@sarahann530 thanks for the reaction
@@Alakwe So you live miserable life then . If you died right now would they find anything of interest to say ?
@@sarahann530 I'm talked about already
I am so glad to have found your channel, I am now a cripple in a wheelchair, but my life pre accident was sailing, and your channel reminds me of that life, thank you
Hugo are you UK based? There are lots of options for disabled sailing.
@@gilesridyard1307 Thanks for the hint, I am aware of that, I'm unfortunately housebound.... and I doubt I could hack it anymore.
No, I was merely thanking for bringing back fonds memories.
Great sailing, wonderful sailors and well made video!!!!!! Brilliant!!!!!
Thanks Christopher, episode 1 though…. you’ve got some catching up to do!
Fair Isle is such a *beautiful* boat! Seeing it always makes me take a breath!
Wonderful video. I'll be binging. Found you from the Rigging Doctor video.
Love Herb & Maddie
Nice couple, beautiful landscape, beautiful ship 👍🏿.
Best wishes crossing the Bay of Biscay and journeying onwards
I live in Poole Dorset, and bought and lived for 3 years in Turkey as a live aboard on a 38ft motor sailor and enjoyed every moment in the 1980’s( before the possibility of making money on uTube from videos!) It was a great time , eventually we ran out of money and had to return to terra ferma but it was a great time and I don’t have to look back now wishing it was something I’d done and never did !!! Have subscribed and am looking forward to all your videos!
Good luck with your venture and I wish you a long happy life as live aboards!
Thanks Chris, not sure that we'll make it to Turkey next year, but we must make sure we get there before we leave the Med.
Great to see you setting off for Plymouth. Gosport is an interesting stop not least, as you recognise, because of the naval interest: the history and the present. The boat you identify as HMS Victory in Portsmouth is in fact HMS Warrior. HMS Victory is further along. Warrior is 100 years younger than Victory and was the most powerful naval vessel of its day. Good luck!
Brilliant choice in the Hans Christian...love the dodger...safe passage...
Wow wow, 1 year late to the day, loved your narrative guys, just sensational..........and loved the seasides haunt back in Britain, have been there for 30 yrs so you bring back the memories. Great pics, great scenery, what can i say, thumbs up and subscribed
This is like traveling around England without leaving West Australia it’s a cracking video thank you
The seals will come right up to boats that are fishing crab here in S.W. Canadian coast. They expect you to chuck the bait when done and they sometimes will eat it.Enjoying all your vids! CHEERS
Lovely boat
Just had a bad day at work and found your video inspirational. I'm off to buy a boat :-) inmy dreams !!!
На редкость отменное видео... Молодцы..
Спасибо
My daughter and husband both work at Oxford University so this connection with you is so very nice. I live in Seattle ,America and hope to buy a 50 foot sailing sloop mainly to live aboard a sail a wee bit. Thanks again..
Oxford is fabulous, we have a daughter at Cambridge, both fantastic university's. Good luck with your sailing.
Wonderful video. Going to have to binge to catch up!
Through this crazy time in our lives I found your channel. I am currently setting my 5 year ready plan for sailing. Keel Boating class next month. The plan is to mono during the 5 years developing my skills. We live on Florida’s Gulf Coast and realize how fortunate we are. While enjoying your content my focus is camera placement, editing, framing well I’m going to school. I studied production at a University. ☹️ family business didn’t call for much of my skills until the wide use of the internet. Channel building on UA-cam is my next endeavor so school away. BTW love your ORGANIZED playlist
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful boat
Just discovered you two through Project Atticus...thrilled everytime I find sailing channels of our own generation! Lovely filming!
Cool, and you’ve gone all the way back to the beginning! Love the Atticus crew. mature beyond their years.
@@svfairisle I'm binge watching you guys today...jumping around. On the episode where a Roman amphitheater was recently discovered. Very enjoyable videos.
@@mytinyretirement When we get some good connection we're going to watch some more of your house in the woods. We went even smaller with our retirement!, but a sailboat means you have the whole world I guess. Do let us know what you think of the style of the videos, we haven't really cracked the American audience, we seem to be more appealing to this side of the pond for some reason.
We've had lots of recommendations to visit Dartmouth this spring as we bum around Southern England, and it was lovely to see it from your perspective! So many charming villages to see, we just need to wait for spring to properly come along now. 😀
Arh spring... that's the only downside, might not come until July! No seriously you'll love it. Do try & get to the Scilly Isles as well if you can.
@@svfairisle Of course, the Scilly Islands are a MUST!! We won't leave the UK without giving them a visit.
Robin Graham, a 16-yr old American, circumnavigated the world single handled in 1965. I don’t think he did it non-stop though. Read his fascinating book, “Dove”.
Great first video. Look forward to seeing more. We sailed Plymouth to Lagos via Bayona with ARC Portugal in 2007 (it was called Rally Portugal then) on our first boat, Cheroon. We too were nervous. Even if you don’t normally get seasick, take a Stugeron tonight and another in the morning. The guy we took with us as a “professional delivery skipper” went off sick at Edystone and didn’t reappear until we were past Finistare! Good luck with Biscay. You’ve got a great sea worthy boat. Have faith in her and you’ll be fine.
Thank you. I took plenty of Stugeron and that made all the difference. It was fun even when the waves got very big. None of us made it to Bayona in the first run because of the storm. We are in Coruna at the moment listening to the wind howling. Really. We detoured yesterday afternoon and arrived this morning. We may leave tomorrow but not sure. Judy
It was nice seeing the the South Coast of England again.
2021
Delightful.
Thank you for sharing.
Stunning binnacle.
Thank you, nice to see the old stomping grounds along the South Coast.
Excellent. Really nicely done.
Really enjoyed your 1st episode. I stumbled upon your channel, thanks to a UA-cam recommendation, to watch the anti-fouling video. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your travels in sequence. Thank you for sharing your adventures here.
Brilliant narration and music selection. Thank you being there. ⚓️
Oh it was no hardship being there I can assure you!
Incredible content, editing and production. It's really not fair how well you present everything so professionally. I hope it is as enjoyable to live your life this way as it is for us to experience. If envy were an asset I'd be quite well off. Best regards always.
Well done on the video!
Beautiful places to moor up, very enjoyable 😁👌
Greetings from a land-locked sailor in Carstairs Alberta Canada! Enjoy your videos. Thank you!
beautiful video. Congratulations from Argentina
Very professional high quality production, and agree it could be a tv show. Thanks for sharing your travels on you tube, great video and advice for us newer sailors.
She's perfect, and so is Fair Isle.
I'm envious having lived aboard for a few years in the Med. Never, ever give it up or, like me you will be sorry.
Brilliant. Well filmed with superb narration and some wonderful sailing. Thanks.
Very nice boat .
interesting to follow you. very nice boat. Intends to sail down to the Mediterranean at retirement in 8 years. prepares the boat bit by bit and ourselves with everything required. has only one Albin 79 26 feet, but it will be fully capable for us.
This channel is a happy discovery! Well done, great video, great narrative and such a lovely boat.
Wonderful episode. I just started following your channel this week and am looking forward to watching your journey and joining vicariously. Safe travels!
Thanks and welcome
Just found your channel from your boat tour love your boat looking forward to watching more thanks
beautiful boat I love the solid cockpit
Gorgeous boat - Bristol!
Very well done, nicely put together episode. It brought back memories of when I did virtually the same trip from Brighton in 97. Recommend setting a stern anchor to hold the bow into the swell, you will get less rocking and a better night for sleeping.
Yes I do get the kedge anchor out for that sometimes. I find with a full keel I can drag it on the change of tide though so don't tend to bother on tidal coasts. Should have done it in Ep 8 though, but he swell didnt come until after dark.
My goodness Judy, never thought you’d end up on a sailing boat. Well, my boat is at Trizonia, near Patras but because I’ve just bought a cottage near Varna, Bulgaria I’m snugged down, and locked down with snow outside. I came down the Danube with me boat after retiring from teaching in Germany with the intention of sailing on and on but the chance of this cute little house sprung up, so here I am. Have not forgotten you, so drop me a line.
Stephen Lediard.
Which episode is the boat tour. Love the keel. She is a tank and will survive when other wouldn’t.
theres a separate boat tour here.. ua-cam.com/video/x8SDb0syCWU/v-deo.html
Just came across your channel and yes we love good maps! Clear way of showing where you are and your sailing routes. Looking forward to working through your videos and adventures!
We want people to be able to follow along, so hoping good maps and real time videos will help with that. You'll notice when you catch up that we post in real time and there's a tracker on the website and facebook ect all links up with the latest videos. So there's no excuse for not following along!!!
@@svfairisle excellent!
Good morning! In this period of Covid-19 I surf the web rather than the Mediterranean with my boat. So I discovered your youtube channel: very well made videos, professional I would say! Your boat is splendid and I will therefore follow you in the future. Fair winds from an old passionate sailor.
Looking good guys.
Thanks a lot guys. Means a lot coming from you. Steve
Very well done video. I look forward to following your adventures.
When are you going to come and see us in New England? We have Maine, the Bay State and the second Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands and beautiful sailing central, Newport Rhode Island!
We plan to sail up the Eastern seaboard at the end of next year. I’m not sure how far we will go though, definitely Chesapeake, maybe NY but Judy starts to get flaky when the Latitude gets higher than 40!
First time seeing your channel and boat! It looks terrific and I admire your gumption to sail around the world.
Thank you for sharing, fabulous adventure
Thanks guys ..your videos a very pleasant and helpful to watch. Bon Voyage !
This is like a professional programme you would find on BBC 1
AWSOME!!!
You won a watch there Steve 👌🏾, I’m new to your channel and I once suggested to the Misses about selling up and buying a live aboard she didn’t share the same enthusiasm as I did 🤷♂️
Judy did't either in the beginning, loves it now though :)
Nice video, music and sounds also great. Thanks.
Nice episode 1, look forward to following your journey, take care.
Lovely couple. Worthy v-blog
I've lived in Spain 13 years now .all I miss is proper fish and chips and a real cornish pasty .great sailing video .keep safe
Ha! yes although it's lovely to experience all the new things it's only natural to miss things you've had all your life. For me it's proper bacon and real ale!
Compliments on SV FairIsle, not sure of construction but has a beautiful nostalgic aspect.
As replied to another just stumbled upon you, so here we go will enjoy watching your experience!
We live a 100% on board our ⛵ and hope soon to take off, couple of months or so to go😉🙌👍👌⛵
Good to hear you're going to untie the lines, I'm sure you'll love it.
Very professionally done vidiography and narration. Making me feel homesick - having grown up in Folkestone. Looking forward to following your adventures.
Thank you for this video! It could make David Attenborough jealous!
Very entertaining and informative. Will be following your adventures. [incidentally....nerdy note here....that tall ship, afloat, in Portsmouth is probably HMS Warrior, not Victory. Victory is in dry dock inside the dockyard. As we are musicians, we used to play for dinners in Captn. Hardy's cabin for the serving Captain of Victory. Decades ago. great fun] Wishing you fair winds and no tangles with crab pots!
Argh that explains it. Thought Victory looked strange from that angle put it down to the scaffolding all over the stern. Thanks for putting me right. Steve
Beautiful boat.
Great video , many thanks
for such a young channel you 2 are doing a fantastic job. Well done, and thank you
Well it's thanks to you guys liking and subscribing as well, so thank you!
nice video thanks
Wow, brilliant video guys! I'm subscribing! No nonsense, well shot, great commentary, a cut above so many of these sailing channels. I'm looking forward to watching all you've posted thus far. If you ever do a transAtlanic and come to Newfoundland, the pints are on me.
On our way!
Great photography guys. Safe sailing 😎🍷🇬🇧
Young lady your audio is superb. Looking forward to following you two. I am on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. I have been following another couple for a year who are in the Mediterranean now. They also sold everything and plan to sail around the world. You should contact them. Sailing Sisu Capt Fritz and Petra
I hadn't heard of Sailing Sisu so will look the up. Judy's not here at the moment but she will be very pleased you like her narration. Even more pleased you referred to her as 'young lady' Cheers, Steve
Really fantastic videos - like others stumbled across your channel and glad I did!
Especially liked your back & fill technical video - I’ve never known what that particular manoeuvre was called but sort of discovered it by accident! The other top tip for long-keelers I’ve found helpful is to steer in reverse using your bow, forget the rudder... of course a thruster helps but otherwise point the nose in blasts of ahead and then go back, repeat until tied up! Sounds easy in theory... we all know boats do what they like in reality.
Looking forward to watching all the others and tracking your progress. Fair Isle is a very beautiful boat and looks heavy and well built. She’ll look after you I’m sure. Best wishes!
Thanks Ed. and yes forgetting about your rudder in reverse is a good idea!
Like the narration and shots. Reminds me a bit of Wish You Were Here!
A bit old school British TV which is a refreshingly different format to the more drawn out and laid back content from most UA-camrs.
Feels higher quality production. Look forward to watching the other episodes.
Thanks.
Great vid , in middle of selling motorhome , I’m not so brave as you guys but ..looking for 35/40 foot capable boat .
Thanks for the episode. Very useful.
Love the baggywrinkle!
Just found your sailing channel!
It is quite well done with good sound and lovely images. Love the sea life close-ups!
It is quite obvious you have been at it for a while....so I will enjoy following your adventures in the future.
Cheers and good sailing!
Thanks André, vlogging is a new thing for us so still learning. Steve
Going to Portugal sounds like a fantastic plan. You enjoy the sun, the food and the amazing Portuguese people while I stay here in London. I'll enjoy the fantastic green sceneries your country has to offer.
I just started seeing your videos and they look very nice and professional :).
PS. If you visit Madeira my birthplace, make sure you also visit Porto Santo.
Safe travels and have fun!
Hope you enjoy England as much as we enjoyed Portugal.
Lovelly , fantastic job done!
Great video and narration, beautiful boat!
Excellent job on the video! I like the mix of scenery, sailing, local info. Well done!
Thanks the channel is still a work in progress, but the great thing about internet base films rather than broadcast is you can get instant feedback, so thanks. The struggle we're having is do we go through details of sailing and risk sounding condescending to experienced sailors or leave that out and upset the guys that haven't sailed but want to some day?
Enjoyed the episode. See you out there, one day.
This does not feel like a 'pilot', first episode, you narrate like a pro! Hooked, want to see more of your travels. From across the pond, a jealous yank!
Thanks Jeff, don't miss ep2 & 3 then!
Lovely first video delighted with seeing some of the local sights and points of interest. Perhaps while in LaFrance mention the names of the establishments that u frequent also please !
Nice yacht
Your narration is so pleasant, calming and beautiful. Video work is without parallel. Wow!
Kudos to you guys.
Thanks Peter, it's really nice of you to say that :)
She's a beaut. Boat ain't bad either. Seriously, lovely boat and great video. Thanks. Looking forward to watching the boat tour.
Don't think I can reply to that without getting into trouble! Steve
I've just found your channel and I can already see I'm going to love your videos. 👍😀
I’m so pleased I have Just stumbled across your vlog a lovely boat leaving the UK for sunnier climes.. fair winds ⛵️
Me too!😍 Find great for mentoring on boat life and most of all sailing !!!
Thanks Guys, glad you're enjoying the films. People do seem to just stumble across us, it's probably us just not being very good at promoting on social media, we just get people who find us by accident! If you visit sailing facebook sites etc. give us a mention, you never know we might actually get a viewer who's found us on purpose!!
@@svfairisle Hi I found you by accident, I am not a sailor but wouldn't mind sailing around the south coast of England. I have traveled around the UK but not seen near as much as I would like. I wish you well on your adventure's I am at the age where I would love to get away also cheers
Looking forward to follow your journey. Take care and fair winds from Norway.
Many thanks. Not sure about winds from Norway though, too cold!!!
Wow, I loved watching this! Your editing is top notch and this felt like a late 90's early 00's travel show...in a good way.
Ha! Well I have edited a few travel shows for the BBC before I moved over to News and Current affairs but that was in the late 80's so at least I've modernised a bit! Steve
Love sailing videos, just became a subby!!! 👋 Can’t wait for your adventure of a lifetime 🌍 enjoy it and please stay safe 🇬🇧
Very Well Produced - the very best of luck

Just found your channel now binge-watching all your videos. I love them!
