- Meet Joseph Bell, the man who inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to create the character of Sherlock Homes.
Joseph Bell was a surgeon, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and a legendary diagnostician.
Bell's process of deduction inspired his student, Conan Doyle, who would go on to use the same process in his Sherlock Holmes stories.

Oh, how I would have loved to meet and talk with Dr. Joseph Bell. I love the Sherlock Holmes stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. Thanks, Robert!
I'm sure he would be fascinating.
He sounds like a character!
Brilliant, Robert. Yet another story to share with my daughters, with whom I shared my love for the denizens of 221B Baker Street.
Brilliant!
Another success! Thanks for the history, love the connection with Robert L. Stevenson.
Thank you!
Nearly 1am time for bed. Oh dam new video. Oh well at least it’s a short one. 😂😂
😂
I've always loved Sherlock Holmes so this was extremely interesting. Thanks for all of your videos. Great work!
Thank you!
I'd often wondered, and now I know. Another excellent romp into the history of Scotland.
Thank you 🙂
That was incredible. He was an exceptional talent with his process of elimination gift. Who wouldn’t want that as a natural gift though
Great job as always Robert
Okay,, no death or religion but Doyle... I'll forgive you this time!
As others Holmes has always been a favorite. I knew of Bell but not the extent of his influence.
I first saw Holmes played by Basil Rathbone. Wonderful character to a young-ish child.
Fell in awe immediately.
I recently found that audible has the complete collection of Holmes narrated by Stephen Fry.. and for free!
I listened to it a few months back while I was sick. It was the perfect tonic.
Thanks for this one,, it brought back some wonderful memories.. 👍👍😎
Basil Rathbone was good!
Thank you Robert. You're a great storyteller.
Fascinating... I love how you tied in all of the loose ends, (deerstalker hat and the cloak, "Elementary My Dear Watson", the pipe), and brought it full circle to "House". Quite ingenious! Another excellent video my dear Robert... 😁 (Even if this one didn't have any gore.🙄)
Ah, I can’t take the credit. I think Bell was mentioned in a House behind-the-scenes episode a few years ago. 🙂
Hi Robbie!
Always great to hear any new information about The Great Detective. Even if it shows up as fiction.
Did you know that Sherlock was related to Lord Greystoke?
What a gorgeous city! Well, except for the new buildings which take away from the beauty.
I see you have been out in the sun! Who knew there was enough sun in Scotland to allow ppl to get a tan. ;)
Blessings!
Beautiful piece of history. What incredible people there were that likely have no idea how much they have contributed to our lives. ❤❤
I love the idea of him wearing the outfit as a joke. 🙂
Thank you Robert for sharing the true man behind Sherlock Holmes 👍 "A struet assumption Watson" Loved reading the stories of Sherlock Holmes 🥰
Have a lovely day Robert and family ❤
Thank you! You too 🙂
My daughter and I have been binge-watching House and given some of the clues sprinkled throughout the series (including House's address) I'm happy to see this timely video confirm the connection!
I remember realising the House/Holmes pun. I binge watched it a few years ago. It turned out my grandad (a retired doctor) was addicted too 🙂
@@scotlandunplugged I never put two and two together.
I was sent by the hoof gp to check out your channel. I subscribed! ❤
Definitely a very interesting man. Joseph Bell. Thanks for the video.
Sounds like one of those lecturers everyone has time for.
Thankyou.
I watched all of them with Basil Rathbone as Sherlock when I was a kid. I also watched them all with Jeremy Brett. I Love Sherlock Holmes.
Brilliant! Why is it that each subsequent presentation is my favorite? This one will be hard to beat. I love Sherlock Holmes and the background is fascinating. I had no clue of most of it - I just assumed the character was pure fiction. Thanks for this!
THank you---details I did not know, like the KLS connection.
Thank you! 🙂
Another great video Rob, always wondered if he was based on a real person as there is always a little bit of truth sprinkled through the old tales and stories of yesteryear, keep up the amazing work
Thank you!
@@scotlandunplugged thank you for all the knowledge Robert 🙂
One of my favorites. Thank you.
Thank you!
Very cool. I'd heard of Joseph Bell, and I remember a TV show called "Murder Rooms" that had him as the detective, but I'd never seen a picture of him and was surprised by how much he looks like the original illustrations of Holmes.
Absolutely fascinating. I love this channel 👌👌👌❤️❤️
Wow, that is so cool! Thank you Robert, I loved this! K.
Thank you!
That was a great video! Ive read all of the Sherlock stories and watched a lot of the tv shows and movies. Thanks for giving us the rest of the story!
Enjoyed this! Thank you!
I so enjoy your channel! Thank you for this! Fascinating!❤❤❤
Thank you 🙂
Thank you Robert! Another fascinating bit of history. Wonderful to know there was actually a person that observant and able to understand the importance of details most would not even notice. And the connection between him and House was quite a surprise!
On another subject, I've looked for the video you did showing us how to make that wonderful soup from smoked fish and I can't find it. Now I know I am good at missing what's right under my nose, but wondering if it got taken down. I've a friend who just smoked some salmon, and my son is about to go fishing and will probably do the same. Wanted to share the video with both of them.
Good one! I had never known any of this!
I visited 221B Baker Street and near there (since it never really existed) there is a plaque stating that "yes, you found the place or as close as you're going to get"! 😂😂😂
Haha. Never been. Feel like a trip to London is in order soon!
@@scotlandunplugged My friend who married a guy in the RAF invited us to stop by on our honeymoon/ visit. She was incredibly excited to show us the palace, Piccadilly, etc. We politely pretended to be interested, dying to leave and get back to Scotland. The best part was seeing the Tower where many of my ancestors may have been "guests". 😂. My ginger husband was looked at with suspicion during some tense times in Ireland.😅
Very interesting hearing the origins of Sherlock. Thanks for doing this video.
Thank you!
Another lesson I’ve thoroughly enjoyed…thank you Robert..regards 🇦🇺
Another great story well told.
Love your videos. 👏🏼👏🏼😊❤️
Thanks again for another great story. You tell it very well❤❤❤
Another fantastic video. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you!
Loved this Bob. Beautifully told.
Cheers!
This tale i truly like, if Joseph Bell was the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, the door Arthur Conan Doyle himself was the inspiration for Doctor Watson... Sherlock Holmes has always been my favorite detective.. i think I've watched most all the different iterations of Holmes. The best being a cross between Ronald Howard and Basil Rathbone
I think Doyle sometimes signed as “Dr Watson” 🙂
@@scotlandunplugged that's cool to know
Ding Dong - First Class my dear Robert
Love your stories!!!
Thank you!
Another fantastic and interesting video.
Thank you 🙂
Very interesting! I had no idea. I always thought he based the character on himself. Thanks for sharing!
LOVELY TOURS THAT U GIVE❤❤❤
Thank you!
Learned a lot. Thank you!
Thank you!
Great video! Loved it ❤
Thank you!
Great video! I love Sherlock Holmes.
Me too!
Another great video. 🔎
Thank you 🙂
While I do wonder if there is a record as to what it actually was, I have an idea as to the nature of the "amber liquid". Given your description, as well as the actions of Bell and the reaction of the students, I'm guessing it was some sort of urine.
Brilliant. 😊
Thank you!
Who doesn’t like a good Detective Story ? Are you at 21 Baker Street🏴Unplugged ? 👍😎🏴/🇺🇸 ! Where is Doctor Watson ?
I see now that everyone has stolen from Scotland's rich history!!!!!
The funny thing is (as with RLS and Jekyll and Hyde) Scottish writers quite often set their books outside Scotland. I suppose they both moved around a bit. 🙂
