    I just bought a 1995 Dico 2.4 tdi on trade me . Only about 140000 kilometres and I owner NZ and never been off road and not one bit rust anywhere. It was always garaged so that’s the secret with anything. Garage whatever you have and clean it and service it regularly. Most importantly use Inox everywhere . It might cost a little bit but in the long run it’ll stop the corrosion. Be careful with those gutter roof racks I had them on my Nissan safari and where the clamp onto the roof they cracked the mastic sealant and water got in and rusted out the roof line all around the vehicle, the WOF guys said I’d have to get it repaired or it would fail . I priced it and it was going to cost about $3500 to 4000 and still no guarantee that the pillars were good or that the rust may be right down , I had it for 28 years but had to sell it 👍👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🍺🍺🍺

      Oh nice! That’s what you want eh. Good find. Hopefully it gives you years of trouble free motoring. Isn’t blue by any chance?
      Have pulled the roof racks off - have no need for them and as you say, want to avoid any issues. Need to touch up the paint where they rubbed but they don’t se to have caused any issues. Rust is a pain though eh - adds super quickly when it gets away on you

    I do agree with the ride quality in some old wagons can be much nicer than new ones, driven a lot of new utes and wagons at work and hated how stiff they are, like they're trying to be a sports car. My old 1st generation surf has much softer seats yet still hold you in firmly and the ride is a lot smoother than most modern dual cab utes. I think its because modern utes and wagons are aimed at a much different market than they used to be

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  11 місяців тому

      It's strange eh - I guess most of the modern stuff is a ute or based on a ute with little changes. I love the Fortuner, but the ride is pretty average. My old Prado still holds the cake for comfort - though the Disco comes close. But yeah - cars in general have become harder in the chase of "sportiness" or something

    Good old Morris Marina door handles & other parts like stalks raided from the parts bins to hastily build a 4WD to compete with the Japanese SUVs.

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  9 днів тому

      That’s part of the... charm… to me. It’s not a Japanese 4WD - but I quite like that about it
      Even if I spend half the time fixing weird not-Japanese-4WD-issues
      Or maybe I’m just mad 😅

    Good buy , had the D2 and when they start playing up its non stop on the tools mechanically and electrically , where the ole D1 300tdi just keep the oils and filters up to it and it will keep on going . if it sounds like a massey furguson your engine is running right , 530k on my D1 300tdi auto , all standard as they say if it ain; FD dont F with it , maybe you can do some vids of where you can take it without spending money on it ie beach's , hills , mud then people can see when driven correctly you wont need all the very costly bolt on's that you will never truly use unless your going comp anyway good luck keep it simple, look forward to see what ya do

    It's an amazing rig...not too small that you can't overland and not too big that you can't fit on the tracks! it has an amazing articulation that makes very good offroad! also the engine is very simple and reliable! take care of the rust and interior and the mods later with no hurries!
    For mods i would (i have a disco :D): around

      They really are eh! Found my old 80 Series a bit wide for some tracks - narrower is better. Sorting out the small amount of rust at the moment whilst doing the interior. Then oil leaks. Then hopefully get it a warrant check so it’s road legal again! Can’t wait

    After owning both a manual and auto disco 1 diesel i can say always go for the auto like you did. The ECU control auto engine actually has a little more HP from factory

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  11 місяців тому

      Interesting - a few people have said that too. I prefer auto diesels having owned a mix of both now, so hoping it was the right choice. It does pull well enough for what it is, goes better than my old Surf with a similar amount of power

    Yeh, let's follow your budget build. I looked seriously at getting a Disco before I got the shorty 90. Spent a lot of time talking to the Landrover club. These things are incredibly capable off road. Yeh, not super reliable, but still a go anywhere fourbie even stock standard. Looking forward to following the build

      I can't wait to chuck it in low range and see how it goes - everyone raves about them. Don't need it to be "super reliable" - just reliable enough, it's not a daily thankfully. 90 is probably a wiser choice though haha. Already planning out roughly what I want to do - simple, cheap, DIY and fun

    You've been bitten by the Land Rover bug - welcome to the club! You will love it, even when you think you hate it. If one day you sell it, you'll find yourself looking at them until you buy another. If you're keen, there is a Land Rover North Island gathering in Taupo in early August. It'll be a good opportunity to meet other Landy owners.

      Yah man thats 100% my view on it too. It also comes down to been able to take risks driving it were you wouldn’t normally take in your family car or daily. If it happens to end up getting damage its not the end of the world. I loved watching Tims old lando videos, he took that thing into some amazing places that id be too much of a sook to take my dirtbike even.

    Nice man, i just did the same thing. Picked up a 1996 300tdi auto, though I've already got a 96 300tdi defender so not quite as green as you. Mines also japanese but my EGR wasnt water cooled? Either way, it came straight off with a delete. Parts for these are so cheap from the UK.
    As for the frnt seats, look up discovery 1 seat diaphragm. They break and the cushion sags. I've done a temporary fix by weaving a ratchet strap between the frame underneath and pulling it tight.
    Currently going through all the suspension bushes and replacing them all. Worth doing on these old coilers.
    I'm in Christchurch, will keep an eye out for your updates!

      Oh nice! They're pretty awesome vehicles eh - and not a heap of them around. Weird - wonder if being a 98 means I got water cooled EGR? Either way, it'll be properly going - no need for it! I'm amazed at how cheap stuff is - on par with Toyota who are also generally cheap.
      Mine has a strap underneath - wonder if that's what has been already done. Was a bit confused when I saw it.
      Fun time! Yeah defo - I need to do that. Where'd you get the bushes from?

    Not another UA-camr who’s bought a D1…right listen carefully…what you have bought is the best car (not 4x4) of the 1990s. It will do anything you want it to do. It’s a shopping car, school bus, work van and yes it can go off road. But turning it into a lifted 4x4 off-roader is pointless, it’s ability is in its utility. Simple to repair and very cheap to run.
    So keep it standard, service it regularly and repair when you have to and it will become the most useful car you and your family will have ever owned.

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  11 місяців тому +1

      Doesn’t need to be the best 4wd or anything (I’ve owned an 80, not much comes close to those - but it’s more than I need) - just needs to be reliable and capable enough that I can use it as a touring rig to head into parts of the kiwi bush where I’d rather not smash up my other 4wd too much. Zero interest in using it as a family rig - that’s what the Fortuner is for.
      Small lift, decent set of ATs, will go everywhere I want. And if I dent it or something, oh well - it was cheap. Plus modifying them is half the fun to me

      @@OverlandNZTV that’s the word…enough…a D1 will do everything you want it to do well enough. The genius of its design means that the D1 is a true hybrid vehicle, I’ve have 3 of them over 20 years, all of them supporting my business, family and outdoor pursuits. As a result we only ever needed one vehicle and over time each Disco became part of the family!
      The title of your next video could be ‘ Discovery 300tdi, the most useful car of the 1990’s?’
