- How does it compare to the Rivian R1T and Ford Lightning? Who is it for? Let's find out.
The 2024 Hummer EV is the five-door version of GM's infamous electric moonshot. It's slightly shorter and less powerful than the pickup but still bold-faced and brutally fast. What does it gain (and lose) compared to the truck?
Our Rivian review: • The Rivian R1T Does Ev...

*I realize that the Lightning is a pickup truck but there's not many players in this space right now.
** I have learned there IS a button to close the frunk, underneath a lip near the bumper. Strike that complaint from the record, your honor.

If you like this video style, give this one a share! It helps so much! Thanks everyone.
I would but this is obviously an FJ Cruiser. Nice try. Typical UA-cam clickbait. 🥱
Why are you buying comments? It's so damn annoying, I for sure will not subscribe
@@BTCNSDAP What? Dude, we don't even know how to buy comments.
@@TheSmokingTire I think you buy those on the dark web.
“Yes, it’s loud when moving through the air at 70mph, but what office building wouldn’t be?”
Zach is a savage for saying it how it is so objectively in front of the GM guy. This was a great review!
The person riding with me was Jason Gonderman from MotorTrend, not a GM employee.
This is excellently produced and edited. Great job, guys!
Zack has become one of my favorite automotive journalist.
Dad, what have I said about commenting...
Zachachary this is grandma, how do I turn off youtube?
Hands down, always thought the same
Better than that Matt fella.
@@herbalchicken Type "porn hub" into the address bar.
This felt like a review you would see on a high-budget TV show, more so thanks to the writing and presenting. Great job Zach.
Zack is killing it, well done all around!
we don't need Matt anymore!! :P
Are you a computer?
Love the honesty in this review. So refreshing to hear journalists actually be critical on a press trip.
Your reviews since you started this new style of "car reviews" has improved so much. This video compared to the Integra review which has a similar style is so much better paced and less corny (less forced). It seems like you take notes from past videos and improve upon them. just thought I'd show appreciation as a long term viewer! Keep up the stellar work.
It's nice to see Zack shine in these solo reviews. Keep it up man!
"It's like they thought bass was an affront to family values, and they wrote it out of the Constitution." 💀
Hilariously solid review. Really well done.
🤪
I have no interest in the Hummer, but your review is well written. Great job, Zach!
You don’t have to have a personal interest in the Hummer to acknowledge the fact it’s a job well done. This easily has to be the most *hated* on vehicle that’s currently available and on the market right now.
The first ever of its kind and it’s American made, yet nothing but a bunch of American haters. If Mazda or Hyundai built the same exact thing, everyone would be praising them. 😂
"bacon-flavored vegetable" is now my new favorite term for electric trucks
9000 pounds…. Totally not a murder machine if it hits another car…
You should be worried about the pedestrians and cyclists who will end up in its blindspots lol
It is per Jonny Lieberman joking about you being dead in a crash vs this on recent SCR podcast.
No one who buys such a massive land yacht is going to care about other drivers, let alone the environment or their massive energy footprint.
Plenty of trucks weigh the same
@Bill Norblat no they do not..this thing weighs more than a ford f550
Very much liking the direction TST has been going with their videos production! This one was great, though I kept imagining how uncomfortable I would have been making that commentary with what I assume is a GM employee in the passenger seat.
I really enjoyed the format of this video, despite not caring for the vehicle. Zack is crushing it.
12 yards long, 2 lanes wide,
65 tons of American Pride!
Bravo, Zack 🤙🏼
Matt, your man Zack deserves yet another raise 💵
Props for the market research as well. 70% of 90,000 buyers are new to EV’s and 40% of those buyers are new to GM entirely. Pretty unbelievable
“Stunt on society and prove how much more lithium you could afford” was such a great line
The answer to the question is present in the very fist drone shot. A vehicle intended to get out into the wilderness… but requiring charging stations you simply can’t build out there. Mall crawler, yes. But that’s about it.
Watts to freedom! 😂 Who designed this thing, Cleetus McFarland?!
They are literally trying to be corny like tesla.
Fuggin nailed it. "A bacon flavored vegetable" indeed!
Zach has been such a positive influence for this channel. His humor and wit are impressive! Love the new style. Please keep it up.
This was a great video. The production value and editing of the past few videos has been amazing! Keep it coming!
This makes absolutely no sense as an EV, but somehow still makes more sense than the pickup version of the Hummer EV. Great video!
Didn't GM get the memo about why Hummer failed the first time? The vehicles were overly large, inefficient, with garish styling that didn't age well. How is this different?
Or you could be LOUD & *wrong* and pulling crap out of your arse. 🤷🏽♂️
FYI button for frunk is a soft area under the lip, very concealed but easy
Oh damnit.
I like this review format. Keep them coming!
Much prefer sitting in this than the Rivian or the Defender. I think it feels special. Love the roof t tops and how far forward the windscreen is with the open roof. I have had a H2 for 20 years and this was not at all on my radar for a next purchase - been leaning toward a Taycan Cross Turismo but have driven 3 and always come away unimpressed. I’ll have to drive one of these now and give it some further thought.
What a brilliant piece of content. Thanks guys!
What a great review Zack. It’s super easy to watch and interesting
Never thought I would like a new hummer. It is cool though.
Great piece of work Zach!
This video made me grab my phone as i am watching on TV, so I could leave this comment: thank you, Zach. Great video and appreciate the your commentary. Please keep doing these video styles!
Brilliant review Zach!
As an Australian, I'll probably never see one of these in real life, and the cost of production of this video probably mean it won't make a heap of money, but I'm sure glad I can watch it.
Fantastic work guys!
Great review Zach! Matt, gunna have to up your game! Bonus points for critiquing the car with an anonymous GM engineer sat next to you. Not awkward at all!
People gave the Plaid crap for having brakes that didn't match the performance. This weights near on TWICE as much. Sheesh.
Zach I presume the button is in the same place as the pick up truck variant of the Hummer. It's just not intuitive because it's on the front bumper. Not as many outlets as F150, but there is one regular 120V outlet in the center console for those people sitting in the back seat.
Zack you had me in the first 3 seconds
Beautifully worded closing statement. Awesome job Zack!
The swing gate is the biggest downside I see next to the price. I understand why there is a swing gate. Having the spare tire hanging on it is the reason. But if the glass can be open separately it solves the problem. Loading anything that would require open the gate, means you'll probably have enough room anyway.
Remove the rear steering, undercarriage camera, lower HP a bit and it will reduce cost and make it more affordable. Most people won't use any of those features anyway.
At 9000 lbs, you should have a CDL license just to buy the electric Hummer.
I look forward to these Zach vids. Nice production too.
I want an H3 replacement. Something for $50-60k. That'd be cool.
on another note, really enjoyed the review...
Wow. Excellent job
The writing on this is *chef's kiss* amazing.
Excellent work Zack. Kee it up man
GM I know cheaper out on this Vehicle. And you have brought up some GREAT point that GM should be noting!! This was the best damn review that I have seen for the Hummer.
Excellent video!
great video!
Great stuff!
Perhaps the very best TST review in recent memory.
This was a great video! I'm not even all that interested in the hummer either, this was just well done.
Great video! I really hope GMC takes notes and makes some changes in the next model.
All these monster EVs are the answer to the question "how can I go electric but still fuck up the environment, roads, and other vehicles?"
Best part is they’re not paying taxes to maintain the roads like you do w/ diesel and gas. Road degradation is yet another thing that no one is thinking ahead about when it comes to EVs.
This was amazingly produced.
I will never get sick of Zacks acceleration face
Bravo, Zack
It's hilarious that he's bashing this vehicle with a GM associate riding along! lol
well done zach, love this style.
“That was not the name of the Tate family vehicle” 😂
I don’t give a s*** about EVs but I can’t get enough of this new Hummer
I wonder if the regen with the motors is maxed out when braking, this should help a lot. My Ioniq 5 decelerates a lot with the motors alone.
In a better world this thing would never exist.
Really good video
Zack McConaughey did a great job with the review
Very engaging video. love it.
I'm not sure the exact solution but the sudden ad just messes with the flow of the video so bad
You mean Matt’s or one of the eight add breaks that YT decided to add?
Ty
Insane video
Well the IIHS better get on to crash testing vehicles like this against a Civic, you are dead as Jonny said against one of these.
Saw one of these yesterday (the truck) at the popular off-road route called Trader Joe’s.
16:16 There is a bacon avocado, which is technically a berry, but your point is well made
Top Gear America would've have been so much better with Zach on it, change my mind.
It shares a drag coefficient with the city of Chicago.
What does it do zero to sixty outside the watts to freedom mode?
Zack did you have to list your criticisms with the gm rep riding shotgun the whole time? 😅
“Take their lithium, and spit out their bones”😂
Zack is so funny. Do more, Zack.
Engineer or fellow journalist as your ride along? Awesome review btw
Journalist
I hate this thing with a passion. The review was nice.
90,000 pre-orders !!!! WOW, GM delivered 854 Hummer EV last year, hmmmmmmmm
Strong conclusion
Great review Zack. Like your takes better than Matts
It’s not that EV’s suck, it’s just that they’re compromised and, more importantly, they’re completely unnecessary.
Oh, the editor does know kW from kWh 🙂
The car world needs a slang term for kWh - even if you know the difference it's just such a pain to say.
The tri wiper is the best thing about this lol
there is a button on the bumper for the frunk
Need to check with Zack during the podcast how was the engineer taking those "brakes are cr@p" comments.
I do wonder if vehicle orders these days (not just Hummer EV) are solely in hopes to make money on the resell and not actual market interest. 90k orders is a LOT of Hummer EV's, I don't see it being that popular/affordable but maybe I underestimate the debt of many and the absurd purchases people make. I see these claimed numbers as the internet wagon warriors, only ~15% can afford or will actually buy a new wagon (e.g. RS6 Avant, M3 Touring). Curious how fast value on these will plummet when the honeymoon phase wears off.
Mercedes S Class also has 10 degrees of rear steering.
Love the video. Feel like They aren't going to love the review. But the key demographic for this likely won't know the difference. Like someone who bought a Model 3 after their Prius, they have no idea how it compares to a Mercedes or any real sports car, and ignorance is bliss.
Actually zack addresses this at the end. I dont get it. Just the ultimate EV flex I guess?
so if I want a new hood, I should park behind a Hummer EV in the grocery store parking lot. seems easy enough.
Hilarious to see Zach sh!t on the car as the GM engineer sits there, having to stay silent
To quote Zach in another reply, "It wasn't a rep. It was Motor Trend's Jason Gonderman!"
Weak brakes, ultra wide and 9000 pounds. Can't wait to avoid these on the road.
Ridiculous vehicle. Great review though. Good work Zack 👍
Great review for sure, but I feel like GM over-designed this thing. Very complicated SUV with things like tire cameras and tire camera sprayers. Not to mention that GM will only produce… probably… 1000 of these in 2024 😅
