I’ve been a software engineer for the past 7 years. All of his answers are 100% on point in regards to the challenges and decisions that software teams have to deal with. From difficulties when changing code bases, to there being too many people and too many meetings, to putting some features on the back burner due to time/impact considerations, that’s all spot on. Even with the drive to put more power in the hands of non-engineers; that’s always a big focus as well. Nice video.
I thought you didn’t get the contract till after your fourth ? After I finish the 3rd season it would say you still have 1 year left on the rookie contract
My take away from this video is that EA was too lazy to figure it out. They knew 2k5 franchise mode was better and went and bought exclusive rights because they didn't know how to fix there own mode. SMH
BOULEVARD RICK I am a developer (a traditional one - not a game dev). Developers never make decisions in companies the size of EA. The decisions are made by executives and product strategists. This is software development in 2020. Developers build what they are told to build. Think of them as subcontractors building a house.
@@zackwhiteal not only is this true, I can provide links from the creative director of Madden (2013- 2018) to back this up. The thing people don't understand is, EA's intended market (at least for sports title) is intended for kids- this is why they keep bringing in enough revenue to support future titles!
james chavis I knew it. that’s dumb as hell but I get it. If they made where we could play the games from the old consoles nobody would buy the newer games. damn I that sucks. makes me have to think about if I even want a Ps5 or not.
This video honestly kind of made me sad. Before I even had Internet I would spend hours playing franchise. No the only thing to do is some type of head to head. I really hope in the coming years I have a reason to never touch an online mode again.
I'm happy more people are reaching out to Madden devs. We honestly don't know what happens behind the scenes, and just make assumptions based on EA's past actions. A shame this goes over people's heads though...
So as a developer of a game. If you know the game is incomplete and the fans will think its incomplete then why the fuck do they still sell it for $60+ ? Thats a question i would have asked him. He sounds like he was being open about it , maybe you didnt want to offend him but you have to wonder how he justifies charging fans of his work full price when he knows its a shit and incomplete game.
The developers don't have any say in stuff like that, they're just the people who physically work on the game. If it was up to them, they would rather make the game every 2 years so that they run into less issues. The people at the top are the ones who have total control over the situation, the corporate guys.
Franchise in 07 was bare bones because they put all their eggs in one basket... superstar mode. And then later years got better and superstar mode was 95% the same until they scrapped it
Too bad "Frantic" kind of sucks and feels very bare bones in comparison to the "shoe-string" hacked together product they put out in the PS2 era. Kind of silly how that is the case, but it is very clear that franchise mode kind of blows these days and has for years.
that would be awesome but they would have to get the rights from probably 45+ players who aren’t in the game anymore for each historic team. They struggle to get 32 for certain promos in mut which is what they mainly focus on. Doing multiple teams is just honestly unrealistic unless you have a bunch of randomly generated players and splashes of big names from those teams.
@@treveonjones8762 the whole 2009 saints roster is in mut? They have big names but would still have to get rights of 40+ players...and this is just one historic team, unless they do an all legend team which they have done in the past, historic teams would be a lot more difficult than say NBA 2K, who does historic teams, because those rosters are only 13 players rather than 53...so like I said unless fans want historic teams with several big names and a lot of random generated players it won't happen, and ea just wouldn't put in all the work for rights for a non complete team.
For anyone saying it’s too much work that is just BS look at the NBA games people just get desensitized to people who do not care about making a good game NBA is truly the gold standard in my opinion when it comes to features and a immersive experience they just don’t have the same Servers quality wise
Madden 20 is the first madden I actually played since 13 & I can’t even keep a franchise for a week cause it’s broken & uninteresting for me 21 they gotta do better
What amazes me is how much fun madden used to be when it was held together with duct tape and wire, then when it gets updated it can’t have as many features as stuff that was on ps2.
The other problem with madden franchise mode is the madden community, we cry for useless stuff. The developers are over there trying to figure out how to put in gumshields and new cleats and other useless stuff that is cool for 2 seconds but then you don't even look at after 2 days rather than actually developing the game! I'm good if there aren't any gumshields in the game or 20 different kind of cleats. Just give me a mode that is decent to play coz that will entertain me more than Michael Thomas or Jamaal Adams wearing Jordan's.
So...you were told that 30 YEARS into game development history (since commercial games began launching in the 70's) was still the "old days of the Wild West" with a straight face???
EricRayweather what about splitting the dev teams, the former dev already said that there were kind of too many people, so maybe take half of each team and give them 2 years to release a game on alternating cycles like Call of Duty used to do
@@EricRayweather This whole thing sounds like an excuse from EA. Especially if it's time based. Acting like people would be in an uproar if they took a year or 2 off is ridiculous. It would do nothing but get people they've lost, ready to come back if the game had a ton of old features that were removed and if gameplay was more user controlled based than animations. I mean, they have no competition to worry about. This would actually be the best time. They also don't have to lose out on games sales year to year. Just offer a small paid for game update that gives you what would be current for the following season, until you're ready to drop the full new version. There is a way to do it, they just don't have any pressure to do it. Also, it basically sounds like they're 💩'ing on old Madden in effort to tell us what we have now is better. But that's not true. They goto "Frantics" so they don't have to rebuild for new gen consoles, but then fail to add what was there before. I don't really care how it was held together in previous Maddens, the fact is, It was there and it was amazing. You can't tell me an awesome house is trash, just because I can't lift it up and move it whenever I want. I'd rather have the awesome house with all the bells and whistles; then goto a house that is portable but has way way less to offer as far as amenities. If they wanted to rebuild or create an engine, Cool. Just make sure to keep building and adding things that it had before you started over.
I'm so glad to hear this, and from a decently reliable source to boot. I've been seriously sick of softdrinksports and other youtubers just complaining about the same things every year pretending that making a game this weird is simple. It's still sad to see that 80% of the comments on this video act like nothing's changed
The return of coordinators should be the next thing added! NCAA did it so well. Imagine being able to be a coordinator and earning a head coaching gig!! I'd go as far to say that adding a few new relocation cities would be nice as well
I miss being able to watch it in spectator mode. Sometimes I just wanted to watch and not have to play or simulate every game. Spectator mode was awesome to me anyways.
That's absolutely the best question to ask! The answer: the public is gullible af. Everyone bitches and moans about how bad the game is, yet, every August, the lines at GameStop are around the block, and the pre-order sales are through the roof. Think about it...
As a PC gamer, I had to wait after Madden08 til Madden19 for it to reappear on PC. What a shock ... Franchise had died and MUT was everything !!! ... and the customisation ??? where the heck did that go ? So I'm now back into wait mode for someone else to recreate Madden or for EA to return Franchise to its former glory before I buy another. Guess Madden05 will remain my madden game til something better comes along.
This video was eye opening I thought that the franchise mode features were simply removed because they wanted to remove them but watching this gives me hope that franchise mode will improve. It’s my favorite mode in madden.
It's obvious to me that MUT has become their top priority, Every time I've booted up the last couple games it practically begs you to play it and buy a certain player. And franchise mode not catering to 9 year olds doesn't help either , which the last couple especially this year's Madden seems to try to do.
Always loved franchise mode but it’s not been the same for a while now, every year I look to see if they upgrade the relocation of a team to where there’s more options for team names and uniforms but no some cities don’t even have options for new names and uniforms.
Why the user can't to chose preseason schedule and in preseason we have Packers-Lions? Why the user can't to chose OC and DC with they who can to leave your team and to become head coach? Why there is not players' hold out? All that there was in Madden 09 for PS2...(and there was the minicamp with the minigames).
The thing he doesn’t address is time. As a former developer, I can tell you that while communication and development cycles are an issue, nearly 10 years later, a lot of these features are no closer to returning. While seemingly well intentioned, they seem to lack direction towards fleshing out the feature to what it once was.
I did address that in the video. I said that EA failed to rebuild everything and went multiple years with little to no improvements made to the mode. They dragged their feet on the process for too long.
what killed me, and I hardly ever bought a madden after 2004 was because how wimply madden was when the fans said to get rid of the play editor. The fans actually said that the play editor makes madden unrealistic. Basically, a few influencial fans decided they didn't feel like playing against more creative fans; so, they made a big hoopla about it, and madden felt the social pressure, and got rid of the play editor. If you just had the play editor alone, all that stuff about franchise mode features would be a mute point. They should have kept and worked on keeping the play editor!
A franchise mode video, Eric - I'm so pleased! Thank you for this :) I've been playing Madden since 1995, almost exclusively franchise mode. Theres a whole world of us!
Well to be fair, since the new engine it's never gon backwards or lost anything. It's only gotten features added since then. They just have been moving slow to get it back to where it fully needs to be.
@@EricRayweather you're absolutely right on that. But I'd argue that trusting them to never mess it up again would be going against everything we've seen from them. So while past results don't necessarily predict the future they do give us a glimpse into the culture and competency of that company and development team.
I just think it's mildly ridiculous that it doesn't keep track of which teams players have played for in franchise still, it just goes year by year, it would be nice to see which teams your FAs came from to build storyline if you play that team in the playoffs or regular season. They could even make a simple acknowledgment of it in game like "lets see how this former Jag does against his former team today" but instead it's just stat lines instead of CHI, CHI, CHI, NE, GB, GB, SEA with the stats like how it should be done. Also coordinators of course
We still can’t throw a fade route with proper ball trajectory. The animations for catching and tackling show a lack of investment for honing a real Physics engine. They still haven’t recovered since 06 when they bought the competition.
I want to ask a question, you sign a coach to a four year deal. Then you win a super bowl in his first year and shockingly after that, you must resign him to a new deal. In Franchise mode, what's going on here?
Antjuan Sampson give him a promise for an extension towards the end of the contract, so more you have a clearer picture of your assets heading in to fa and the draft
like im in Franchise year 2030 right now and the announcers still talk of Patriots winning Super Bowl from 2019.... smh.... there is no cutscene for winning the division or at least a decent tweet/notification about it, need some type of cutscene for winning the conference championship, right now its like a regular season game.. EVREY NEW SEASON IN FRANCHISE MODE IS LIKE ONE BIG RESET.... SMH bottom line... its the small things that need to be fixed... if they cant fix the simple stuff, how do you improve it as a whole?????
I would love a game that was just Franchise mode, every game won or lost would effect the whole story mode.. and more customization to your players and even the team.
If they honestly focused mostly on contract and draft logic and added more coaching staff options, franchise would be amazing. I do not see how this could be so difficult
Exactly! people talk about wanting change and they don't want to act by making a stand about what they believe in. They just complain but yet still purchase the game anyway. It's pathetic.
I wish they'd let you adjust the quarter length for the simulated games, my stats are always close to the bottom of the league because I play 6 minute quarters send the simulated games are like 15 minute quarters
I don't think people have a problem with waiting. But we're talking about 13 years here with bearly any improvement. While Ultimate Team gets better and better every year. Ofcause it needs more than 1 year to rebuild the entire system. But if almost nothing changes over that long of a period, then you have to wonder wether the old system was realy that much worse, if it delivered constantly better results.
On Xbox you can never see the record of the person playing you online. It was fun when you beat someone in the top 10 or even 50. My record doesn't even show up anymore since everyone is playing it these days.
EA had such momentum in the 2000’s with the creative releases of games like SSX, Need for Speed, and successful Madden games. Then there was a clear change in their direction, which turned them from an engaging company with their fanbases to complacent managers who only care about dollars, even if it means sacrificing quality.
I am surprised the developer didn't mention Brooks law. It is a known fact in software development of many other such processes that when you add people to teams you necessarily increase the number of communication lines that have to happen between people buy n that is to say that if n is the number of people on the team already you added person you have any more lines of communication the comes a point when when teams are spending more time communicating than actually being able to spend time on code and features 5 in scrum teams we often talked about two pizzas being enough
Personally maddens greatest downfall was starting from scratch on the 360. I know they saying the code was a mass on the ps2, but it’s only until recently that the game is getting back to the level it was back then.

From difficulties when changing code bases, to there being too many people and too many meetings, to putting some features on the back burner due to time/impact considerations, that’s all spot on. Even with the drive to put more power in the hands of non-engineers; that’s always a big focus as well. Nice video.
Franchise mode on madden 20 forces me to retire after 3 seasons. It happened twice
Timothy Washington u need to sign a contract idk if that’s why but I think
I thought you didn’t get the contract till after your fourth ? After I finish the 3rd season it would say you still have 1 year left on the rookie contract
Well at least we now can hope franchise mode will be good in 10 years
My take away from this video is that EA was too lazy to figure it out. They knew 2k5 franchise mode was better and went and bought exclusive rights because they didn't know how to fix there own mode. SMH
THE DEVELOPERS DONT LISTEN TO US. THEY ARE THE WORST TEAM. 2K programmers listen to player. All EA want us our money. To heck with them
Not true at all
BOULEVARD RICK I am a developer (a traditional one - not a game dev).
False
Really makes me not want to buy Madden when the PS5 comes out, because we know what will happen. It will have less features than Madden20 does.
Supposedly ps5 is going to have backwards compatibility so if you have the old decent franchise games you could bide your time with those
Daybreak Jake I’m so pumped to be able to go back and play ncaa and line maddens 07-11
james chavis I knew it. that’s dumb as hell but I get it.
If they stopped focusing their time with ultimate team and focused primarily on franchise mode, it wouldnt seem like that "big of a task"
I'd really love for them to add like old school team roster with ray Lewis ed reid , old saints roster from like 2009 ect
that would be awesome but they would have to get the rights from probably 45+ players who aren’t in the game anymore for each historic team. They struggle to get 32 for certain promos in mut which is what they mainly focus on. Doing multiple teams is just honestly unrealistic unless you have a bunch of randomly generated players and splashes of big names from those teams.
@@jimmylemar true !!! Just a dream unless we get sum like another madden 25
JL Productions they have their rights most of those guys are in mut 😂
They're not
Dont buy madden 21
Madden has no competition. Simple.
i recently played head coach and its sad that it has more depth than the new gen maddens
I preorder madden every year but I think this year I’m going to wait a while until I buy it. I hate having to pay for an unfinished game every year.
Wait till black friday for 30$ off
marcus moore honestly thats what i was thinking. I’ll likely pick up the PS5 for Black Friday and probably finally get madden around the same time.
You should've stopped a long time ago
Rent it from Redbox for $3/day, then decide to buy it on Black Friday. It's a win/win situation.
kingsaco Thats actually a pretty damn good idea.
What if EA went to like a 2 year cycle?
Not really possible. NFL wants a game out every year. EA also won't throw away a year of game sales.
DLC
Xavier Steel amen my guy!
All i really want back is the full customization of relocation teams
Im a franchise only guy. The move to PC was HUGE and I'm hoping franchise expands. Being on a PC makes playing franchise so much better.
Why do they have all of these issues with programming but yet 2k makes a ball game that blows madden out of the water
I just want first person camera back and the combine and college and highschool
First person mode was 2k
And helmets popping off with hits, hard hits, injuries. Not a fan of the latest madden's.
Chris Breuer those features you can actually blame nfl on, they had madden remove those things
@@SCSAsJorts yep
I'm so glad to hear this, and from a decently reliable source to boot. I've been seriously sick of softdrinksports and other youtubers just complaining about the same things every year pretending that making a game this weird is simple. It's still sad to see that 80% of the comments on this video act like nothing's changed
I wanna see you be able to create your own team with own custom players, buts that just me
The return of coordinators should be the next thing added!
You still can just sim game in put on slow
@@Kuzach1 Thank you... I was able to it. Thanks again...
EA has improved on excuses every year. Good job on that EA.
Everytime we make a new engine it was too hard to remake... why are they making games if it’s to much of an inconvenience to put out a product
That's absolutely the best question to ask! The answer: the public is gullible af. Everyone bitches and moans about how bad the game is, yet, every August, the lines at GameStop are around the block, and the pre-order sales are through the roof. Think about it...
*Talk about why there's no physics in any of the Madden games. Its animation simulation lol*
After watching this I respect you as a journalist. Good shit Eric
If Madden 12 is last good franchise, who I'm enjoy to play all 32 teams into franchise seasons. Hope Madden 21 could makes like PS2's Era!
you can. just create 32 owners.
Oh yes! Of course, Bro! Maybe I’m best ownership of Madden NFL Series’ Franchise!
Easily my favorite video you’ve done in a while. Keep up work like this; substantive without the fluff and clickbait
Madden is going to lose a lot of money when 21 comes out, this yr was the worst madden, they gave and took at the same time.
I doubt it. 20 is one of their most successful games in terms of engagement and sales. People are more active this year than they've been in a while.
@@EricRayweather it will probably be my last yr of purchasing, I was very disappointed this yr,to many take aways.
20 not the worse Madden at all
@Chow Legend you go and spend 60 to $90 and mid season things stop working which is BS!
@Chow Legend 19 was bad as well, for me it just got worse with 20, gunna have to keep my money in my pocket madden.
I play MUT a lot but I love franchise and it makes me sad that they neglect such a good mode
You sound like Darryl from Bob's Burgers
Always loved franchise mode but it’s not been the same for a while now, every year I look to see if they upgrade the relocation of a team to where there’s more options for team names and uniforms but no some cities don’t even have options for new names and uniforms.
Why the user can't to chose preseason schedule and in preseason we have Packers-Lions? Why the user can't to chose OC and DC with they who can to leave your team and to become head coach? Why there is not players' hold out? All that there was in Madden 09 for PS2...(and there was the minicamp with the minigames).
I really miss being able to see players previous played teams and position battles
Same
The thing he doesn’t address is time.
Thanks for the video you answered bunch of my questions I’ve been pulling my hair out for years with frustration with franchise mode
It's simple. Today's kids have 0 attention span. Online and MUT killed Madden franchise
what killed me, and I hardly ever bought a madden after 2004 was because how wimply madden was when the fans said to get rid of the play editor.
Great info Eric! I’ve bought every Madden. But I won’t be buying another one until they make massive improvements though.
This is still your best video ever lol. Just playin'.
My wife found this out of the blue and somehow knew it was me lol.
A franchise mode video, Eric - I'm so pleased! Thank you for this :)
I've been playing Madden since 1995, almost exclusively franchise mode. Theres a whole world of us!
"Mode can only improve, not get worse" EA : "Hold my Beer!"
Wish these old madden's were backwards compatible. I'd play madden 05 over today's madden anyday or even better throws nfl 2k5 on backwards compatible
@@PopMercii Thank you
like im in Franchise year 2030 right now and the announcers still talk of Patriots winning Super Bowl from 2019.... smh....
there is no cutscene for winning the division or at least a decent tweet/notification about it, need some type of cutscene for winning the conference championship, right now its like a regular season game.. EVREY NEW SEASON IN FRANCHISE MODE IS LIKE ONE BIG RESET.... SMH
bottom line... its the small things that need to be fixed... if they cant fix the simple stuff, how do you improve it as a whole?????
Damn bro was just thinking about all the features we lost and you uploaded one, thanks
I would love a game that was just Franchise mode, every game won or lost would effect the whole story mode.. and more customization to your players and even the team.
If they honestly focused mostly on contract and draft logic and added more coaching staff options, franchise would be amazing. I do not see how this could be so difficult
Probably why I haven't bought a madden since 17.
I really hope and can't wait for the newer ones to get it right.
NCAA 14 had coordinators where madden doesn't . Fix contracts, add coordinators, allow play creator and editing and better scouting then I'm good.
Stop buying the game! It's the only way to invoke changes
Exactly! people talk about wanting change and they don't want to act by making a stand about what they believe in. They just complain but yet still purchase the game anyway. It's pathetic.
Madden 04 is the greatest Madden ever made imo. Its sad when you haven’t been able to make a better game in over 15 years.
What they also need to do is change the gameplay. It used to be so smooth back in the day now it’s slower and choppy
Franchise mode kills their sales, imo... I use to take my time on a new release the following year bcuz I lost incentive
EA had such momentum in the 2000’s with the creative releases of games like SSX, Need for Speed, and successful Madden games. Then there was a clear change in their direction, which turned them from an engaging company with their fanbases to complacent managers who only care about dollars, even if it means sacrificing quality.
I wonder how many of the issues with franchise comes from the NFL wanting to portray a sanitized version of running an NFL franchise.
yet NHL has kept all of their franchise features throughout the years, can still set the price of a hot dog in my stadium at $20 XD
#fixMaddenFranchise
What happened to create a team not replacing a team..but actually building a team from scratch and inserting them into Franchise mode
Great video Eric! Very informative
Appreciate it!
Franchise is just exhibition with a schedule but half the teams have the same record
Thanks for the info! Hopefully Franchise gets the improvements it needs.
Weird thing is that Madden 07 on ps2 still has the franchise code from 05. ps3 was the only one gutted. Also franchise back then wasn't broken
If only we could have more studios doing nfl games so they had competition
Personally maddens greatest downfall was starting from scratch on the 360. I know they saying the code was a mass on the ps2, but it’s only until recently that the game is getting back to the level it was back then.
