Can we just appreciate the balls Alicent has in this scene! She is literally standing up against the two most powerful houses in all of the 7 kingdoms who are also the only two to own dragons. Mental.

I love Emily's subtle acting in this scene. You can see how insecure Alicent still is. She is NOT comfortable with everyone staring at her. But she still keeps her head up high and does what she's planned to do. It's so much more effective and realistic if she just suddenly started giving off "yass kween" energy.
What was her plan?

Others will have started to do the same.

She is scared to speak to Rhaenyra like a queen at first glance, but she talks herself into it while she looks down and by the time she looks back at her the second time, the queen mask is already on. Very subtle, very deep. She's way better than the "grownup" actress.
People don’t understand how big of a power move this is. She stopped the king dead in the middle of his speech and as she started walking the room had to stand up as she is the queen.
THIS is the Alicent Hightower we know from the books.
when Oldtown, the seat of House Hightower, calls its banners to war, the beacon at the top of the Hightower glows green. With one pointed sartorial choice, Alicent gives us a portent of the conflict to come.

I love that now she calls rhaenyra stepdaughter instead of friend. This also means she is commited to help her son rather than a stepdaughter and go into conflit with the princess.
I will always be team Rhaenyra but damn this was badass. This scene was very impressive and such an empowering moment. Because Rhaenyra had always been sassy, independent and confident. Alicent, however, was the opposite. She was manipulated, taken advantage by the adults around her, always looked down to and stayed quiet so she doesn't get in trouble. Her turning her anger into confidence and uplifting herself was something I never thought I would be so satisfied to see.
A piece no longer, she is a player now.

I love the audacity with which Daemon is still sitting cross legged while everyone stood to show their respect to the queen.

I don't think I've ever heard music as evocative and surreally apropos as Ramin Djawadi's music for Thrones. It ALWAYS feels like it evokes a different time to ours. I hear the plight of the characters in their musical themes, it's insane. He is a literal genius and a visionary.
A considerable percentage of the show's potency is granted via the strength of all the music. Thank you, Ramin. Not only for your work on Thrones, but for returning for House of the Dragon.

That BGM! Literally sent shivers up my spine when i first watched it. For a moment I thought Cersei Lannister has returned as Alicent Hightower. That boldness, that pride, in front of the mighty Targaryens. Kudos to the people who executed the scene and definitely Emily Carey. She and Milly alcock will be dearly missed.

This was the moment the show became a worthy successor to Game of Thrones imo. The show had been great from the beginning but this really took it to the next level for me

This show. Man, with full of subtle strokes of punch. I mean thus walking scene just conveyed so much. Alicent wearing green, the fires behind alicent, her subtle look so that everyone understands it's ALICENT THE QUEEN walking down the aisle and not just Viserys's wife, the STEPDAUGHTER phrase, ultimately geling down to the wedding mood. This season has the most of such gems. True acting delite HOTD has been.

They changed this scene up from the books. Still an amazing scene. Here’s the passage, if you’re interested. “In 111 AC, a great tourney was held at King’s Landing on the fifth anniversary of the king’s marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, the queen wore a green gown, whilst the princess dressed dramatically in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became the custom to refer to “greens” and “blacks” when talking of the queen’s party and the party of the princess, respectively.”

I love the over the top take that shows her in the middle of the room, a small woman casting a large shadow over everyone.
I also love the support from her House. Standing up to break the frozen room into standing up for their Queen
And the smirk at Congratulations Stepdaughter. A punch so hard that Rhaenyra had to take a deep breath

the real battle started when Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) walked into the wedding feast wearing that dress. A gorgeous green gown fit for Alicent's status as queen, this dress was more than just a killer fashion statement. It was a call to arms.
In my opinion the best scenes is 1. Viserys entrance, 2.his speech, 3.Confrontation between Alicent and Rhaenyra, 4.Aemond claims Vhagar, 5. Alicent's entrance.
This scene reminds me of Varys' riddle on power. Who holds the power here?
The King? One who presides over all the lords in the room?
The Queen? Whose only advantage is having a 3 year old son?
The Prince? Whose one command to City Watch can bring King's Landing to its knees?
The Valeryons? Whose wealth is equivalent to the rest combined?

Hands down my favourite scene from the first season . Acted perfectly and the music was perfect too
She should have had a crown. That would have been the perfect finishing touch for her outfit. In the book, her crown was important because she placed it on her own daughter’s head during her children’s coronation.
The crown on her head was probably not because it was just the beginning of the war, but there is no doubt that the crown would have enhanced the beauty of the dress and the scene.

This is my favorite scene in the whole show thus far. Literal fucking chills from something so simple, just from the way it's shot and what it means within the context of the scene. Masterful.

This is what I love about costume design/choices. I know they made it extremely obvious, bc a lot of people might not have made the connection in this instance. But they also did it in a more subtle way with Rhaenys costume. At the grand counsel meeting, she’s wearing the Targaryen colors red and black, and then she never wears them again, until she busts out of the dragon pit on Meleys. After that, she’s always in red and black, a subtle nod that even though she hasn’t openly agreed to side with Rhaenyra, that her allegiance is to the Blacks.
Hightower theme 😍, Alicent wears that dress so well.
I have a head canon in shows like this, or games that there are people in the background playing the score. So the characters are hearing what we hear 😎
What would made the scene better is if Alicent wore her crown as Queen Consort, displaying dominance on the crowd

"Congratulations step daughter, What a blessing this is for you" the first slap on the wrist alicent gave to rhaenyra. Followed by many more for the rest of the season. The little flame of jealousy she had until now with her has grown as wildfire.
Jealousy? Do you lack emotional IQ, some people are born fearing morality especially woman of the time. Alicent cared for Rhae and spoke privately to her only to swear her virtue upon her mother's life. She had to find out from Criston that Rhaenyra is immoral but worst of all a liar. Projecting 21st century mindsets on them is wild.

This is one of the most feminist scenes of the movie. here alicent is alone she doesn't trust her friend and she knows her husband doesn't care about her and will always support rhaenyra , she tried to be part of their family but for them she is nothing but an outsider, and now she decides if she is an outsider, she wears it proudly

@@ForceInEvHorizon every one here knows that aegon is a challenge for rhaenyra at the beginning alicent thinks because she is friend to rhaenyra nothing will happen but after rhaenyra not trusting her she realizes that they are not anymore so she tries to get a power to protect her sons herself and in different occasions we see that rhaenyra doesn't care about kin slaying if needed ( take vhaemond for example and also in many 's eyes rhaenyra and daemon have murdered laenor too which is their cousin)

It's sad that there is not enough context of how POWERFUL and COOL the Hightowers are.
They are one of the oldest houses in the Reach some even theorize they have been there even BEFORE the First men arrived. Their capital is Old Town, it is home of the High Sept which is the center of religion for the Seven and it has the Citadel which is the center of learning, education and "sciences" for the maestres.
It is also a Port that sees a lot of traffic and revenue with lords that care for their smallfolk (Atleast compared to other houses). Despite being a "minor house" they can field thousands of troops and even though the Tyrells are their liege lords in truth the Tyrells have no control over the HighTowers.
Sadly all this context is lost in the TV series but in the Books the Hightowers are shown to be the powerhouse of the south.

Neither of them is the protagonist, although up until this point rhaenyra was being pushed as one, they are both part of the main characters group and I think this was the moment which established Alicent as one of the main characters (good things take time😂)

He is just a complete psychopath. He didn't hate or love his family, but once he saw an opportunity to gain an advantage from it he killed them because they were simply obstacles in his path.
