    I've always believed in leaving spawning fish alone. My family owns a lake in WI and wanted to preserve as much of the population of fish for sport or the table. In the 1960's and later we learned to lower the population of fish by keeping the smaller fish, and throwing back the big ones. As time went on, the overall fish growth became stunted due to our inability to control the population size. So we stocked predators such as bass, walleyes, and pike, and that did the trick. But I can't get over the guilt that I feel when fishing the spawning beds; it makes it too easy to find and catch the fish. I'm not criticizing anyone else, I'm simply the goofball who can't let go of the old views instilled into me by my Dad and GrandDad. We believe in giving the fish a sporting chance. This is not a political rant 'cause I hate and distrust politicians! I'm just a Midwestern raised jack pine savage. Nice fish and nice video!

    • @BassBrawlOutdoors
      @BassBrawlOutdoors  5 років тому

      Bill Sutherland you make some great points. I’ll still stand by my beliefs that letting those fish go right back to their beds is doing WAY less harm then putting that fish in a bucket and putting a fillet knife through its side. The big males are the most important fish in the lake regarding bluegills. Is it any better to fish the week before the spawn and catch the fish? Or ice fishing and taking them home? Catch and release like shown in this video is not doing any harm to the fish or the lake.

    • @kevinkev500
      @kevinkev500 5 років тому +1

      As a fellow 'Sconni I know what you mean, but a balance is needed between predator (Pike, Walleye, us) and prey (anything that can be eaten). Quickly releasing fish just of the bed is not harmful, they will quickly find their way back to the nest to guard the eggs. And keep in mind that not every nest will be found, but it is very possible to fish out good genetics.

    With the fishing pressure we have nowadays. Sponging bluegills should be protected. And the fishing season for gills should be closed during that time. I know of too many lakes that are good panfish lakes. That have depleted population of bluegills. And, besides the DNR hopefully doing their job by helping to replenish the bluegills. Closing the fishing for gills during their sponging, would help at least somewhat, replenish. There population. Pan fish are way too vulnerable during that time.

    The pound plus gills will have more Hg and other pollutants in their meat. Definitely fierce bluegills. Caught one last week that snapped my pole as I flipped it up towards me while standing on a dock. Smaller is better too. I eat 6 5 and thick in stunted pond and up to 8. 9.25 and up go back.

    I love bluegill for their fight, their taste, their beauty, their ability to get big fish when you use the smaller ones as bait. Its a treat. I wish I could eat more bluegill but my lakes don't stalk them so I only have two of them a year, and they have to be kind of big, like the ones you caught. cause I have no idea how many there are, and if I knew I'd just keep a bunch of smaller ones and deep fry them whole if the waters well populated with them.

      I like using little Berkley power baits that I can just keep the jar in the boat and always have something that will work when I see big sunfish to catch. If I'm going trophy hunting and they won't bite, then I'll use a leech or crawler. A full crawler they will nail the head and it gets those big ones to come unglued and attack it.

      Chris Story that would definitely be a fun way to get these big gills. I throw little Rapalas on top and they destroy them

      Big Dark Bluegills will come completely out of the water and down on them. Only keep what you’re going to eat and release all others. They will be back next year.
