    So ya its interesting, with the gills its not just the big females, like you said. The big dark males fan the nest and chase off the predators. So the lakes that have the super good populations, people are releasing the slab males and females. If it goes over 9 in do not keep it!

      Ron Lee Those are really nice ones! Ive caught them just short of 2lbs out of this lake as well quite a few times. I Don't think theres any fish that fights as hard as they do. Our growth rate up is is half of what you have down there too so it take well over 10 years for them to attain this size

      That’s definitely a fact bro…not up for debate about it period! But what I don’t seem to understand is why people think they have to throw all big gills back 🤦🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️ big bluegill are extremely populated across the country and they breed like crazy so there’s no way it would hurt by catching a few here and there.

    • @330Maniac
      @330Maniac  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly man you don't know about the growth rate up north in states like Wisconsin, Michigan or Minnesota. These gills I'm catching are 10 or more years old. You can't replace them in a year or even two years. You take them out of a lake in high numbers and they are gone. You destroy the lake. It takes 5 or 6 years to see a lake even start to bounce back. Lake becomes stunted and all of the gills are very small because there were no big gills to protect the nests during the spawn. In turn the genetics of those big fish are gone and the eggs are fertilized by smaller males. Lakes down in the southern states have a much faster growth rate. Takes a decade for them here to grow here to this size. Look up the growth rate for a bluegill in northern Minnesota. Also look up how important big bluegills are to a fishery. You'd be surprised what you'll find.

    i can never find the bluegills at castaic unless its fall and night when they are literally by every rock you can see in the water. ive found them here and there but only if i rented a boat and actually got to part of the lake with bushes and stuff in the water. but most is bare bottom with hard clay sand or rocks.. which you think ok cool you see a sunk log or some big rock out there you should get a bluegill or bass. not here. you reel that thing in too easily with your light set up but hey to each their own. i go out with my 2-4lb line and let smaller ones pull a little drag lol.

    Great video just stop apologizing for keeping fish. There is nothing wrong with keeping what you will eat. As long as it is not wasted then it is A-ok! I hate the fact that there is so much pressure on people to only do catch and release and even when most of these people do practice catch and release only about a handfull of them can do it properly without the fish likely dying anyway. Keep what you will eat and feel proud you are harvesting your own food. No different then hunting.
