I was fortunate enough to be "one of those guys".Perfect blend of Italian design and German solidity, for over 359 k miles. So reliable it was almost preternatural.
I had a 87 16v scirocco for 15 years and I kick myself anytime I think about it. I own a MK4 Jetta 1.8t and if I was you go with a MK4 1.8t I can’t imagine it! Nice cars you got I hate you lol! The sound of a 16v at 6k there’s nothing that can sound better.
I always liked the Scirocco. I know someone who had a 1980 Scirocco, and another person who had a 1984 Scirocco (which I drove a couple times). I always thought it would be fun to have (or at least drive) one of these 16V Sciroccos. I had a 1993 Corrado VR6 for a short time, but I always have liked the Scirocco too.
I just got an 85 scirocco Jh 8v and man i never knew that so many people know about his car but it’s like you said it’s random weird guys that catch you off guard and they know way more about them that i did
Good video thanks for bringing up the Scirocco again! I've owned many of these. If you don't mind, here's a few additions and corrections. I do believe that 1974 was the first year of the Scirocco in the US. The reason Karmann was selected was that they were VW's manufacturer of choice for their lower volume specialty vehicles, so that VW didn't have to retool one of their high volume lines. Ie. Beetle Convertible, Ghia, Rabbit Convertible, Scirocco, Corrado. The last year of production for the Mk2 Scirocco was 1992 in Europe. In the USA, the last year for any titled Scirocco was 1989, but those were assembled 1988 models. Enjoy the car!
Back in the 90s on my way to class in my mk1 GLI I remember several times being followed closely by a scirocco - probably heading to the very same class. Both cars made in Germany. Those were some quick drives to school. 😀
Such a cool car! One thing I always think when I see 70s/80s VWs is how cool their wheels were. I love the wheels on the Scirocco at 1:50. Looks almost like a BMW.
Always like the Scirocco but never had the chance to own one. I heard that Giugiaro (the first "G" is a soft G by the way) designed a Mk II but VW declined it and did the design for it in-house. Giugiaro's design eventually became the Isuzu Impulse.
I purchased the first 16v Scirocco sold in North West Indiana from MVP VW Porsche, it was Tornado Red. The year was 1986. What a great car! I'm like Gary,i owned at least 25 VW's over the years. I still have my 1984 White GTI original paint with 150,00 miles. Also a 2017 VW GTI. Love the VW's! Great story Gary!
Loved this one as well. My first water cooled was a 75 "Rabbit", later had a 80 Scirocco while i was back east. Always loved the Mark 2 Sciroccos! those and the Corrados! Great story guys!
The 82 Scirocco was stolen and recovered stripped. Stolen were the 90 Corrado wheels , battery, and the one power window regulator I had installed. Those wheels were the first 15s! Someone at Jim Ellis Atlanta VW bought a Corrado and had them swap out those for BBS wheels. I bought them from parts.
I had the exact same Sirocco white 1800cc16v Love it very fast easy to drive great ride During my tenure of 10 years just regular stuff did break down Brakes water pump generator A/C compressor
Great memories! I had 2, an 82' and an 84' I always pined for a 16V but never happened. I think they both had the upshift light, but neither worked. In Canada we got an extra year,.till 89'.
the first scirocco is always nice to look at. yours is perfect too. Since 2017 I have had a lot of fun driving the last scirocco here in Wolfsburg. Many greetings
Me and a buddy drove from Corpus to Gulfport and back (with a quick detour in New Orleans) to grab one in about 2000-2001. I had never seen anything like it and thought it was so cool!
I've been mostly into aircooled....but I did have both an 8V and 16V Scirocco - really enjoyed them. Fun to drive and even back in the early 2000s when I had them they were pretty uncommon. Also really enjoyed my G60 Corrado too. Glad you got this one back on the road.
A father and son duo, quite interesting. Looking forward to such moments with my sons(10 and 7 yrs).Nothing is better than working, studying, worshipping and enjoying recreational activities with your kids.
I have an 87 16v with the shift light and I love it lol. And it is actually different per throttle position. When I'm full throttle the light won't wont come on tell 6100-6300rpms.
There is no wrong way to vw. Please continue the vw life style. It is important for future generations of vw families. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with the vw universe.
I love the early Rabbits. A friend of mine sold a RX7 to get a GTi. That was the fastest auto crossing car on three wheels. I got to drive it in a “quarter” run, and wanted one, but never got one.
The VW I wanted in the 80’s and couldn’t afford!! Loved the MY 1988 16V. Ended up with an 84 Rabbit......then Golf GT, then 92 GTI and then and then.... Thanks for making me fall in love AGAIN with the Scirroco! BTW, my GRANDPARENTS had a ‘79 Scirroco......they were VW LIFERS!!!! Keep up the great work fellas!
VW Life- BTW, everyone in North FL loves my VW LIFE shirt. Including my ‘59 bug, ‘70 Cabrio and ‘81 Westy under resto. Hope to attend an event with u all in TX! ROAD TRIP!!
I just bought my fifth VW Life shirt (with the beetle on it) I now have a VW Life wardrobe going. I love the VW Life merch. I really enjoy the pics of Jake growing up surrounded by VWs.
MKI is the best one! I paid $125 for my 78' in 85' or so - floors were rusted right out. Lots of welding, but loved that car. Where Ya'll at? I'm up in Dallas and would love a MKI with a 4 motion/2.0T conversion.
The 1988 was the best Scirocco, IMHO. I worked at a VW dealer in 1987-88. The ‘88 felt more refined than the ‘87. A lot of the ‘87s had notchy shifters, but when the ‘88s came out, I noticed that the shifting felt just right. To this day, I don’t know what change VW made, but it was good. If I had my choice when running an errand for the dealership, I’d always choose the 1988 Scirocco and enjoy the heck out of it!
I had 3, 2 1982 Scirocco's and a white 1987 16v like the one your driving ... Loved them all. I may be that guy. Expensive to fix ...stainless steel exhaust cost me a fortune to replace.
After watching your Scirocco episode, I took the plunge and bought the 84 Rabbit diesel that I have been wanting. Is 4 VWs too many? Your videos make my Thursdays happy!
Good story. I had a '76 about 40 years ago and prefer that body style. Found one of them hot rodded with a 16V in Las Vegas a year or so ago. Wish I'd bought it.
Got a white 88, 16v new in Nov. ‘87. Loved it my new wife make me sell it in 92. The only good thing was I replaced it with a ‘88 BMW 535i with 34k miles.
I really enjoyed that video. brings back memories. My oldest brother owned more VW’s than I can count on my fingers. As a kid I went to the hobby store and Christmas shopping in a scirocco.
I had an 88 16v. Loved that car. Learn to drive a standard on that car. Coldest a/c but the condensation drain would always get plugged up and would leak in the passenger floor. Ended up going around a corner to fast and broke the front axel. Traded it in to VW in San Antonio and bought a Mexican Jetta. Worst mistake.
Wicked! I just bought an '87 16V with euro headlights and a monowiper installed. It's awesome to drive, and y'all posted this today on my birthday!!! i was wondering - would y'all like a free custom horn button? I love your guyses channel and I just started hand making custom horn buttons for the 60s-70s wheels and I'd love to send y'all one with the German Flag colours to match y'alls logo!
I think the Dasher eventually was renamed to Passat, so technically it's still being produced. The Scirocco was replaced by the Corrado in the late 80s-mid 90s, and there was a new Scirocco being sold in Europe, until 2017 I believe.
Ugh I owned an 87’ Scirocco and it was the smallest, most uncomfortable interior I’ve ever seen. I’ve owned 53 cars and my MR2 and RX7 were so much more comfortable. It’s also the only car that I’d hit my head on the roof(I’m only 6’0)... I still have PTSD from a horrific 12 hour road trip I took with 5 people cramped up in my scirocco. I’m glad you guys like the car though. I love my 74’ Dasher and 71’ Bug! P.S. the scirocco is one of the best looking cars ever made
I owed one of 52 VW Scirocco turbos. It had an IHI RHB5 turbo that made about 6 pounds of boost. It was a kit sold by the dealer that WAS covered by the factory warrantee and it turned the car into a 133 hp bottle rocket. The turbo was tiny and air cooled, and the car could dart to 60 mph in about 7 seconds. This thing could easily beat the shit out of a 16 valve car; It wasn't even close!
Im that Scirocco guy....I wish I could find our '80 Scirocco S... Dad sold it in '96...bought in New Orleans paid dealer price for it.......the Mk1 is my favorite '75-'81....ours was rusty too...when we moved to Virginia...it only took 7yrs for the bottom of the doors to rust out...was Alpine White..would have been my 1st car...
@@VWLifeVW ...I had actually bought an '81 Scirocco steering wheel for my '87 GLI years ago....I'll never get rid of it...in my opinion it's the finest steering wheel VW ever made...
Always love the stories. Came very close to purchasing a Karmann Ghia this week but just couldn't pull the trigger. I'm looking forward to the days when you guys dig into the harvest beetle.
@@VWLifeVW Just didn't have the touch you guys have with your work. The guy bought it to flip but didn't do anything to it. Looked like somebody used paint to cover flaws.
I love my scirocco daily drove her for 2 years never had an issue with her recently bought an 8v mk2 gti lol so I can finally give her a break loved the video guys keep it up 👍🏼 make a vw life shirt with a Rocco on it 🤣I’ll take 10
Forgot the best story on the 78 Scirocco. We were taking the interior out to redo it all. Found a Buttermilk container in the right rear pocket below that rear window down behind the panel. Someone had to have tossed it in there on the assembly line. German writing all over.
Great video, came across it searching for info about Sciroccos. I had a '76 that my father gave me when I got my license. Interesting that my Dad named it Rocky. I crashed that one and got a '78 to replace it, named that one Rocky 2. While fixing that one up and getting it painted, I had the seats out and used milk crates to sit on for a while. I then bought a 1980 Scirocco S, and a1977 parts car, welded the doors and cut the roof off of the 1978 because I wanted a convertible. I was wondering how you came up with the name Rocky. I never got to find out where my dad came up with the name. He named it, so I was hoping to hear how you came about the name.
damn i’m glad you guys did this one I guess i’m one of those weird guys lol i too always liked the square i sh ones of course the 16 valve was legendary and in high school for me any Scirrocco was my dream car although i was more capable of buying a Rabbit more specifically a 81 2 door with a blown head gasket i put the head gasket on drove over 1000 local miles then decided to go on a 1300 mile trip in her and i spun the main bearings ? luckily i had a rope and a 12 pack in the trunk area and i got pulled to campground then home to fix the motor again i took the back seat out of that Rabbit and bought foam for it as a sleeping area ? unfortunately on that one the Bosch fuel injection i could not get working correctly and eventually all the steel brake lines just rusted out so i got rid of that one all together btw i did have a 75 Rabbit with the carburetor set up on it that was a good car except the interior was uncomfortable
Hey Gene and Jake, nice episode! Very informative, and very cool cars! There no air cooled Vdubs, but there cool just the same! Im glad you guys found the time and more over the content to keep us all happy out here in VW land! You both are good behind the camera, keep it up, thanks again!! P.S. Wheres Matt Jackson!!!!!!
Loved the Scirocco back in ‘84 when I was looking for my first car. Bought a Datsun 240Z instead but bought a Bug the next year. Love your show - happened across today and subscribed.....have been go thru all your past videos. Now I need a Bug or bus. QUESTION: why do some Bugs and Buses have only one yellow fog light in front?
An old friend of mine had a 4 speed 70's model back in high school. Sh*# brown color and interior falling apart but she and her dad make that car haul ass!
Man I sure wanted one of those 16v cars when they were new! I had to make do with my 8v carbureted (!) Rabbit. Fun, but not that same. Great vid as always guys!
Hey guys, great info. But just FYI... I'm a girl and I owned an 80, an 82, an 85 and an 87 Scirocco. I loved 'em!
Post a picture of them on our Facebook page! facebook.com/VWLifeVW/

Nice to learn that you‘re into watercooled VWs too. My first car back in 1987 was a Mk I dasher wagon (Passat in Europe where I grew up).

Yeah pretty cool

Dad sold it in '96...bought in New Orleans paid dealer price for it.......the Mk1 is my favorite '75-'81....ours was rusty too...when we moved to Virginia...it only took 7yrs for the bottom of the doors to rust out...was Alpine White..would have been my 1st car...
geez that rust sucks! thanks for sharing
@@VWLifeVW ...I had actually bought an '81 Scirocco steering wheel for my '87 GLI years ago....I'll never get rid of it...in my opinion it's the finest steering wheel VW ever made...
Just starting the resto on my 1985 Scirocco (red). I'm the only owner and its sat idle for the last 15 years. My son (11) and I are working on it.
Cool seeing you guys do a water-cooled vw. Love the nerdy details.
Glad you liked it!
That's a lot of Roccos! VWLife!
yeah almost too much :)
Always love the stories. Came very close to purchasing a Karmann Ghia this week but just couldn't pull the trigger. I'm looking forward to the days when you guys dig into the harvest beetle.
Thanks so are we! Why did you pass on the Ghia?
@@VWLifeVW Just didn't have the touch you guys have with your work. The guy bought it to flip but didn't do anything to it. Looked like somebody used paint to cover flaws.
Some nice info on the type 53. Never knew they were even called that originally.
Glad you liked it!
I love my scirocco daily drove her for 2 years never had an issue with her recently bought an 8v mk2 gti lol so I can finally give her a break loved the video guys keep it up 👍🏼 make a vw life shirt with a Rocco on it 🤣I’ll take 10
if you promise to take ten we might actually do it so watch what you wish for! :) thanks
Another great video, I love that term roadsteration perfect, keep’em rolling while fixing, a win mentally and monetary.
awesome will do thanks!
I need to get one of those Scirocco t=shirts!
Do it!
Forgot the best story on the 78 Scirocco. We were taking the interior out to redo it all. Found a Buttermilk container in the right rear pocket below that rear window down behind the panel. Someone had to have tossed it in there on the assembly line. German writing all over.
Wow that's awesome!
Liking the scirocco, my son's first car is a 85 golf. It was hard finding snowflakes, but all his friends thought it was cool
ah okay cool!
Awesome thanks for sharing but them name Rocky is just taken the second part of scirocco, Rocco = Rocky
Never seen a 16v scirocco in the uk nice
Pretty rare these days!
damn i’m glad you guys did this one I guess i’m one of those weird guys lol i too always liked the square i sh ones of course the 16 valve was legendary and in high school for me any Scirrocco was my dream car although i was more capable of buying a Rabbit more specifically a 81 2 door with a blown head gasket i put the head gasket on drove over 1000 local miles then decided to go on a 1300 mile trip in her and i spun the main bearings ? luckily i had a rope and a 12 pack in the trunk area and i got pulled to campground then home to fix the motor again i took the back seat out of that Rabbit and bought foam for it as a sleeping area ? unfortunately on that one the Bosch fuel injection i could not get working correctly and eventually all the steel brake lines just rusted out so i got rid of that one all together btw i did have a 75 Rabbit with the carburetor set up on it that was a good car except the interior was uncomfortable
awesome Craig thanks for sharing!
Great show , had a scirocco 1980 I believe fun car !
yes a lot of fun thanks!
I so want a mk2 16v type53.
get one! keep looking
This was filmed during the lock down you'll see Matt Jackson next week!
Very nice! welcome to the channel! not sure why it would only be one light? maybe it's just a personal preference? and it's easier to source only one
great stuff thats cool driving with ya son , cool stuff keep safe guys
You too thanks!
An old friend of mine had a 4 speed 70's model back in high school.
Sh*# brown color and interior falling apart but she and her dad make that car haul ass!
That's great!
Man I sure wanted one of those 16v cars when they were new! I had to make do with my 8v carbureted (!) Rabbit. Fun, but not that same. Great vid as always guys!
Thanks!
I do not remeber there being a wide partition, or whatever you might call it-
Had a 1990 mk2 gt. loved it but sold it to move on to a t4 van that I converted to a camper.
Ah okay cool
VW Life thats puts my vw count at , beetle, scirocco mk2 gt2, sirocco mk2 gt, and now a T4. All were, are great
Great video, I’m going to take your advice and do at least one thing a day. I got a Jetta vr6 and tdi.
Very cool!
