I was poor in the 80's, can't afford a BMX bike, then came college, all the money has to go there to, then work, all the money save up to buy a house, then paying mortgage, then paying for the wife, then the kid, and now, I'm in my 50's, and I am going to finally get me a BMX cruiser. Well, I actually did, 2 months ago, but the bike never arrived, it was lost in transition, found out that it was robbed from the delivering train in Los Angeles. I think this time, I'm heading to the local bike shop, just hope I make it there it in one piece because I got to have that bike before I kick the bucket.
A Redline was an excellent choice. This video is two years old. I'll bet you couldn't resist going from riding around the track to racing with the other dads. I raced at the Orange "Y" (So. Cal) in the late '70s (HS age). Fast forward 20+ years and I took my 13 yr. old son to the same track and, seeing the dads racing Cruisers, it got my juices flowing. I bought a Redline Cruiser (John Purse sig. series). My son lost interest, but I raced either Friday nights or Sunday afternoons, depending on my family's schedule. I was 39 yrs. old and raced for about five years. I'm 59 now and I still keep an eye out for anything to do with racing. I hope you're still riding your Redline, Clint, if not racing it. Great father-son time.
I did the same thing 13 years ago. I bought a cruiser because my kids were racing. I had no intention of of racing. Some guys in my age class would show up at the track on Friday night and entice me into trying a local race. I did it! I sucked at first but slowly improved then starting doing nationals. I did this for 11 years until I crashed and fractured my hip. The people you meet at a BMX track for the most part are unpretentious and care about whether you’re having fun as opposed to what you’re wearing or the bike you ride! Enjoy the time with your son and know because of your competitive nature you may take it beyond just riding around the track! It’s good training as well. A hard lap leaves you sucking wind and improves your bike handling. I’ve Aaron Gwynn at the track in Perris Ca more than once getting in some laps!
Great post, until the fracture in your hip part. Sorry about that man! I’m going to take it pretty easy on the BMX bike. I don’t want anything to disrupt my gravel riding and mountain biking. Looking forward to it though!
Im 40 and ride a GT pro 24. My son is just getting into bikes and about to start BMX and I got it a when he was 2 for when the day came he started bmx so I could do it with him
That’s awesome!! I’m 42 and I ride my Redline PL26 about 5 days a week. I like to ride it around a local trail after work which is around 17 miles and mostly paved but a little rough in places and very hilly. To my knowledge I’m the only maniac who does this on a single speed cruiser. Haha! It’s a fantastic workout
Nice! That's my idea too. I'm 45 and always wanted one as a boy but never had one. I figure it would be a good workout to ride and I love the simplicity of a bmx.
Don’t mess with the your “old man” for he might be on the podium with you, just a little step higher :) Been MTB for last 3 years and approaching 65! But one of these days, gonna get me a BMX and learn them tricks! Hopefully, I won’t break any bone :) Thanks for all great videos :)
I started racing bmx with my son over a year ago at the peachtree city track. It definitely beats sitting on the sideline watching! Peachtree city just had an electric prostart gate installed last year.
Looks like a fun little bike. Plus it's another way to get some exercise too. I've got a 20" bmx but I haven't touched it since last year when I got a dirt jump bike. Even though I'm not any taller than when I rode bmx as a teen, 31 years later and counting the bike feels so tiny. Hope you have a great time at the track.
I forgot all about J&R and its only right over the bridge! I used to order stuff from them years ago,. I've been looking for a cheap dirt jumper that is sized that the kids can ride and I can ride. A cheap cruiser, and some upgrades might be where its at.
80s bmx guy here..although i never got into "racing" and the whole scene "as it wasnt something you did in west tn"..i did get into flatland and even built a quaterpipe...Never got good at any of that..but always had a passion and still to this day i have a love and passion for it. Good luck and get RAD!!
Chad Kunka Sunday bikes has the preorder open for their 24” model C right now....they’re selling out fast tho! Bike bling has them in stock as of this reply. $480.
I had a Hutch Trickstar when I was a teen. Bought it someone I knew for $50. It was a steal. He needed $50 more dollars to be able to buy his first used car so I told him I'll give him $50 for the bike. Didn't think he would say yes.
Would this be good for a 2 mile commute on flat surface? I want something that can be fun even if it adds some time to my ride. Not looking to go 10 miles or higher. But I need a seat because I’m 225lbs. Fit but not in shape. Thanks in advance.
if you ride mountain bikes I think a 24-in would be the way to go. 20 in is going to field tiny. That being said, it's going to end if you want to race. The standard BMX class is 20 in. if you move up to intermediate you have to be on the 20-in unless you race cruiser
@@theshindogg what's funny is that park wasn't even there when I lived there, at least I didn't know about it. I didn't get into mountain biking until I moved from New Jersey. I have gone back up there to ride allamuchy. I'm going to try to do it again this summer.
I’m a horrible spectator as well. For those that may not know, you can race a cruiser in novice at USABMX tracks. You’ll need to run flats in novice. Enjoy!
Glad you are still enjoying several disciplines of cycling and with your son...I wish my kid would gain interest in gravel or road cycling instead of only mtb. That being said bike storage becomes an issue as you expand your riding and cycling is a money pit and the search for the perfect 🚲 never achieved.
For mountain biking your choices 29 or 27.5. it's going to depend on your riding style and the amount of travel the bike has. I got quite a few videos comparing the two wheel sizes on my channel. Some of them should give you some direction.
Im 6’1” when I would race it was on 27.5” so I also trained on 27.5” when I’d do group rides or lead tours it was 29” and when it was time for fun and mischief I would ride the bike I built which was a 26” The 26” only felt too small if I was trying to do anything other than what it was built for which was kind of a freestyle/trials bike I made specifically for Hawaii DH trails.
Not more than a mile, if that. The only way you could ride it any kind of distance is to get one of the seat post extenders that I see at BMX races. I've never tried one.
Finally some justification of my need to ride a BMX in my 40s! Thank you again sir!
I'm 44 and been back into downhill for the last 2years 🤣
Now looking for some else for more local as the mountains aren't near where I live.
Hahaha same!
Just told my wife I want one and the level of laughter coming from her has never been louder

I'm 55 and bought this same bike. It's great.
got the same bike at 43

I’m 50 and considering it🤣! I loved my BMX bike as a kid. Beautiful Redline!
"I have no intentions of racing"....... Yeah right! Looking forward to seeing you on the track

You went from not racing at all to maybe doing local stuff in less than 10 seconds. 😂 I fully expect to see BMX race videos in the near future! 😉
Haha, I noticed the same thing. I was like, sure you're not going to race.

29" World Tour,riding 5 days a week, too..North Hollywood.48 years young...Another maniac, too..
There goes my chances of winning... I won't be able to beat this guy.
😂😂
Yeah right. My goal is to have you only beat me by 10 seconds.

I think you (which ever one would get beat) are okay: 1) cruiser has it's own class 2) age has it's own class
Thanks man. I'm gonna buy one soon! I used to do freestyle BMX in mid 80s. Always wanted a Cruiser! So glad you posted.

Ha ! We lived in peach tree city also ! We were at that track near the Fred amphitheater not more than a few weeks ago - wow, small world indeed.
Awesome, I knew you would get one eventually!!!😉🤙🏽Have Fun Bro!!!
really like your channel, thank you Clint - great storytelling and very timely, looking to get bmx myself
I just bought a 29 inch bmx. The Sunday High C.
I have a redline cruiser and they’re fantastic
Nothing better than family time on bikes.
Lol big ups from NJ(south Jersey) !! I'm 46 and raced in EHT & English Town from 86' to 93' ! The good ol times

4:16 good to see the cable on the right side. XD
Im going to j&r today and buying that in grey i think or the gt pro. Both are same price.
I owned a Redline back in the early 80s and it was the seed for my love for mountain biking 30 years later. Should i....?
DO it :)
Chad Kunka Sunday bikes has the preorder open for their 24” model C right now....they’re selling out fast tho! Bike bling has them in stock as of this reply. $480.
Did you?
Heyyyyyy I got a bike from them about 1 week ago a 26" Kink Drifter, I love it...
The kid takes the bike. 😂😂.
We have a track here in Bern, and you see dudes pushing 50 ripping every weekend. Its highly competitive even at the senior level.
Im 47 . I want a bmx cruiser too. In our town will be built a pump-trak
How is it holding up? Also what is the weight of the bike? I see alot of different numbers.
Clint Gibbs channel has just " jumped the shark" !😄😄
Time to come out and run cruiser. Getting destroyed in a open class is fun lol.
Cool Redline! What is the Top tube measurement?
I have a Standard 125-R cruiser. Try racing I bet you go back to it

Do you have any more bmx riding content?
FINALY! BMX>gravel bikes!!
You get a like for REDLINE :D
Correction i got the 26 inch redline lol. The 24 inch gt was sold out. Im digging my bike. Later on i wanna get a 26 inch or 24 inch freestyle bike.
The crashing part without anyone touching them.. wish me luck!

awesome new bike, I saw you yesterday
Good to see you yesterday! That was a good day of riding.
Who are you kidding Clint? Of course you are going to be racing BMX. Competitive people compete! You cannot help it.
For old skoolz tricks you need both brakes?
Yes, for street freestyle BMX you want a front brake
What model and how much does it weighs?
I think your going to win races, can't wait to see
Would you say this 24” is ok for a track or would a 20” pro xl be a better choice? I’m looking at buying a race bike but I’m 6’ tall and 38 years old

Nice. Where'd you live in NJ back in the day?
Hackettstown area. Allamuchy township specifically

bmx cruiser and an easy rider/beach cruiser is different?
A lot different. A BMX cruiser isn't really designed to sit and pedal. The saddle is too low. The wheels are much much smaller than a beach cruiser.
Im about to be 42 and I still ride a 20 inch! You may be taller tho, I'm 5'10" on a good day.
Love it
So awesome! What’s your local track?
High Springs BMX
hsbmx.com/
peachtree city bmx track is my local bmx track
The mongoose title 24 is a bit cheaper. Around 260
Clipless BMX?
Most BMX riders today use clipless
@@ClintGibbs Turns out I actually know nothing about this sport except the bikes are too small and everyone starts in a line.
Can you review the bike
Clipless pedals on a BMX?
Yep. That's today's BMX. All riders use them except for the beginner class where it's not allowed.
@@ClintGibbs Wow... Here's me thinking it was flats only....
@@richardhaselwood9478 yup, a lot has changed since 80's BMX

Redline MX24

I used to race bmx bikes but I stopped bicuase I broken my hand
Can you commute on this
Not more than a mile, if that. The only way you could ride it any kind of distance is to get one of the seat post extenders that I see at BMX races. I've never tried one.
XT clipless on a BMX bike?
Yep, the only ones that don't use clipless are the beginner class (not currently permitted).
Oh good, it's not just me. 👴👍
clipless? yikes
Most BMX riders today use clipless
Sit down and watch people riding ? Naaaa
