Love this video! It's my favorite of yours so far! You can tell a ton of time went into this to prep for it. You hit a lot of good points to consider when someone is looking to get back into BMX as an adult. I know when I started up again, I had no idea what the 29" was like. I was only familiar with the 20" from back in the day. The 24" back then seemed huge when it really wasn't all that much bigger. As an adult who mainly just rides on a cruise level, the 29 definitely is one of the easiest and most comfortable bikes to ride. I've really been enjoying the 26" bikes too though and so I was excited to try out the 24". I think you are gonna love that Monza when it gets there. Man, that pump track looks awesome! There is talk on our island about building one and I've reached out to the people in charge to let them know I'd like to help out with that. Thanks so much Kevin! I'm one of those weird guys who probably has almost as much fun researching a topic as I do participating in it. Whether that's about the bikes themselves, or figuring out how to do animations and effects in Davinci Resolve. It's so interesting to hear everyone's takes on the their favorite size for cruising. I still haven't tried a 29", and I know a lot of guys love those. My intention wasn't to start a bike collection, and I think the 24" will be my sweet spot. But I know myself too well, and I'm sure I'll find a reason to add a 22" and a 29" to the stable within the next year or two. Haha. The news about a potential pump track on your island is fantastic! Your offer to help out with the project is just another example of your dedication to the BMX community. I'm sure your bike experience and passion will be greatly appreciated!!!!
Agreed. I’m 44 years old and currently own a 26in hyper jet fuel. I know it’s not top of the line but for my budget it serves me well until I save enough for something more premium. 26 inch is the perfect size for me , 6 foot, 215lbs
I'm a 49 year old dude, who rides a Colony eclipse 24". When I take a brake from my MTB and go for a city ride, or just cruising around, I always have a blast! Just keep on riding whatever gives a smile on your face and wear a helmet!
57 here and still riding. I mainly ride my 20" freestyle bike still, but I also do a lot of mountain biking. The information you provided here is spot on. Nice work! You covered a lot of similar things I often talk about on my channel. Especially when it comes to bike brands, quality, and those investment firms buying up commonly known bicycle brands.

I was looking for "BMX seat post extender" and YT suggested this video. I'm 42, ride BMX in my early teens, got back to bikes in the last decade fixed gear trend, went to road bikes, than gravel, but had to sell everything to pay school bills. The 24" BMX is the only one left. Now it's time to go out and make some memories with my kid. Greetings from Brazil!

I really appreciated this video. You provided solid and helpful knowledge. After watching the Cruising the 808 guys, I started looking at Monza bikes a little more but was still a little hesitant. However, after watching this video my mind is made up. I was looking for a 24 inch classic box to do some of the same things you are doing. More than just cruising but hitting single track, exploring trails and pump tracks. You helped me to see that Monza is the way to go. Thank you

Karate Kid had a Mongoose Kos Cruiser. I owned a 26" OG. Today I BMX with an RSD Middlechild with a one speed automatic transmission and 4 pot disc brakes. Gearing is 30:14. Trialsy, you betcha since I require that if I am going to hire a bike. BMX tracks in the area, that is where it gets really good! A bike that fits, has the form and function for a 6' tall rider with loooong arms. 27.5 wheels, 50mm rims and 3" tires that are lighter than most 26, 27.5 and 29's out there perhaps many 24's as well. Still, have to love all of the BMX classes that have raced. They are bringing smiles to many faces and making memories like a smile factory! 4130 makes for better longevity and proper frame flex. Tire pressure is key, don't overinflate for the load. When I looked into the OG Diamond Back BMX'rs that were around way way back in their first couple years, prices were an eye opener. Being up in the mountains, I am always on the lookout for more singletrack, preferably engineered and built by the local deer population. Some of the trails the deer have created have such lovely flow and are a hoot! What I can say is, BMX can bring out the best in people! Taking my pit to the BMX track and having a race and cooking up good food to share with out community is an amazing afternoon of good times.

I’m 50 years old 6’5” 210# I had a 20in hutch with all the trimmings. I want to get back into some cruising and maybe some beginner flatland. I saw haro and Gt have 24 and 26ers now. I keep staring at them. I want to wheelie and endo and boomerang again.

This video would have been great before I bought the bike, but I figured it out on my own and did right anyway. Im 54 now 5’9” and 185. Went 4130 Chrome moly frame with 22.25 top tube. I live way out in the desert on a ranch, so Im always on dirt. This bike is perfect for jumps! I almost went with a 26” and Im glad I didn’t! But I cant see someone around 6’ being comfortable tooling around city streets on a 24”. Great video!
Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences. Yeah, the 24’s aren’t quite as comfortable for casual street riding (especially longer distances), but they are great for what you described being around dirt and jumps. Glad to hear you’re loving your bike 👊
Thank you so very much for such a well made video. My husband and I are 53 years old and not your gung ho athletic type. With that said, my husband is wanting to retire the mountain bike era and return to the BMX,. grown up style. Your video broke down the important info points that should be considered when someone is a gen-Xer like my husband and I .Having a cool looking bike with all it's bells and whistles versus what's practical and most useful for my husband's needs. Appreciate the information! I'm an old BMXer from the late 70s early 80s and want to be able to mostly cruise, hop a curb, and hit a lift with a touch of air from time to time and MAYBE even race (the track is two hours away). I just wish USA BMX had a cruiser class for 26" wheels; as popular as they're getting. Anyway, 59 years young now and getting ready to start selling off stuff to get my next bike.

Great video! My first bike as an adult was he Mona 24" with Tuff ll's. Love it! But I'd recommend some spokes if you're gonna jump it. Skyways can only take Maybe 60 psi. I'd buy an extra spoke wheeset for jumps. I love cruising it in the fall. I then bought a 26" Haro, 29" GT Pro World Tour, then some 20" bikes, but my custom build S&M ATF 22" is the best all around for making me feel like I did as a kid. I'm 47 yrs old 5'11" 225 lbs. Love the 22". I chose the 21.625 toptube but wish I would have chose the 22.125. I bought my wife a FIT series 22 and it has the 22.125 toptube an is way more stable on pump tracks. I want the White Monza with Tuff ll's next!!! When I bought my Monza a few yrs ago they only had the 1" threaded headsets. A little creaky. Haha but now that they offer the 1 1/8 threadless... even better
Thanks for the feedback. You make a good point about considering getting an extra spoke wheel set for jumping. Adding that to my wishlist for down the road! Dang, you're quite a few steps ahead of me in our journey of going down the bike rabbit hole. You've got a nice collection there. I haven't tried a 22" yet, maybe that'll be down the road for me too. I have a 20" S&M Dagger. I like it, but it just feels too small. I sort of wish I had gotten their 20" ATF, but maybe that'll be my 22" bike if I ever get one. That's unless Monza comes out with at 22" 👍. And yeah, those white Monza's white Skyways are beautiful!!!

I’m going to watch your video first, but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be perfect. I watched a couple other videos online and one guy was complaining about the size of the seat post. But those bikes look amazing! And I have to agree with you for the price they’re probably a really good value. I like to wheelie a lot, but I don’t wanna do too many other tricks. I just turned 59 years old and labor and Industries doesn’t pay worth a damn when you fall on your back.lol but I have to say I am really enjoying these videos in the content especially when it’s coming from an OG! 5’10” 170, I’m on 20” same as when I started in the 90s. I actually live in a city in Asia now and use my BMX to commute 90% of the time. Keeps me in great shape.
20" all the way. 41yo 6'5" no problem. The difference is that the top tube, handlebars, stem, and cranks are all longer. The seat is set higher too. No need for bigger wheels

I recently attended an old school BMX race event was held called "Dirtyfest." It was cool to see so many guys racing 26 and 29 inch bikes. I'm starting to see a big move back to 26 inch race bikes (OM Flyer, for example). 26 was the original cruiser size in the late 70s.
It’s so cool that we’re able to attend that event. I saw it all over social media and in some UA-cam videos. It looked awesome 😎 lIt does seem like 26” is the sweet spot for a lot of folks.
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood 24 to me is the new 20. I'm still the same height as I was when I stopped racing in 1985, but 20 inches now seem too small and 24 inches seem about right. I'd like to give an OS20 a whirl though. My next purchase is going to be a 26 incher, either Race Inc, SE, or Supercross.
Thanks for this video. I've been eyeballing Monza for several years now. I'm almost 50, had an '84 Predator back in the day with Dia-Compe, Sugino, and Tange accessories, and that 4130 Chromoly frame, and it was the absolute bomb. Now you've convinced me that I need to invest in a Monza!
What a great video. I came across a 24 Monza in offer up, but I knew nothing of the brand, but I loved the way the bike looked, so I decided to do some research . To my surprise, I came across lots of positive reviews l. so I decided to go on their site and buy one . I had no idea how much i was going to like the bike. I absolutely love it, and today, I'm waiting on my 26-inch white one . And trust me, these two won't be the last ones I buy 😊

So in depth. I've just Acquired a 1998 GT Performer over the pond here in London. All of those considerations went out of the window when i saw it online for sale....saying that, a lot of the things you highlight to factor in are innate in us old school riders not so much the ethical choices as we were kids and fantastic you have put all of them down like this. Thanks for the video. I got myself a Wethepeople "Audio" 22" for my 50th birthday. Back in the day I had a E.T. Factory Kuwahara (which got me beat up a couple of times).
@@jimbeam4111 I like it a lot. Out of the box I had to retension the rear wheel (the spokes were all loose), and the stock brake pads squealed and chattered badly, but other than that it's been great. It's one of those "you get what you pay for" situations, and you can see why this bike costs a bit more than the other 22 inches out there. I use it on the pump track and just for cruising around.
I'm from N. Va. and Hutch was the most amazing bike you could own. I still remember how many hours I spent custom building my Hutch from the catalog, I could never afford one but I was a kid with a dream. Congrats and thanks for sharing!
I set up my 26er colony eclipse for freestyle and cruising, gyro, 4 pegs, planetary free coaster. Works perfect for me, I'm in my 40s. I can still do a few flatland tricks and it's fun cruising around jumping curbs. Keep shredding 🤙
I'm 53 and have owned a jet XL 24 for a few months. I love it however main issues are 1 it's a race bike, it's cheap, it will break easily and the wheels are already showing signs of failure because they're starting to buckle slightly just from dropping off a roadside kerb. Trust me UK kerbs are way lower than in the USA. 2 seat height is way too low. I have to ride it standing all of the time. I bought a long seat post only to discover the seat on the bike is moulded to the seat post so I need a new seat, and I've no idea what type because the clamp is flat not rounded so maybe a MTB style seat will fit? 3 bar height. Way too low. I'll need to fit taller bars. I don't like having to crouch forward all the time. Apart from these niggles I LOVE IT. I bought a 20 inch Hoffman condor 25 anniversary frame and built it up and it never felt right. It felt too small. I also bought a 27.5 MTB and hated the crossbar height and the crouched forward "thing" and the 24 is perfect apart from having to reassess the seat, the bars, and not so much build quality because that is actually great but build MATERIALS and cheap components. What I want eventually? 2020 haro dmc master. Because it's dimensions, paint, build quality, can take abuse etc and the fact it doesn't look like any other cruiser matter. Now to actually find one...... And the mortgage to buy one!
Yeah, a 24” is a nice blend between a 20” and a larger MTB or bigger wheel BMX. I love my 24” for that reason. I’m learning flatland tricks, so I’ve actually been riding my 20” more lately. Those Haros are rad, good luck with the search 👊
Cool stuff. I like my MTB for riding around and trails. Wanted to do racing but I have more fun on the trails taking my time. BMX racing looks fun. Not really into tricks. Going to contact the local bmx track and see what day and time would be good to try it out before I buy one.

I wish I found info like this when I went shopping. As a 6'3" guy who got too big for my bmx young. I went shopping for the bmx fun in my 40's. I got no help at the bike shops at the time. It's been several years since I bought a 26". While I bought a good bike I may of made a different choice with better info like you shared.

Right on!!! While I always loved BMX too, I got way more into skating back in the day, and while I never stopped skating for more than a few years at a time, I went about 30 years without riding a BMX bike and I’ve been enjoying rediscovering it in recent years. Mags and a lightweight frame sound great 🙌

Thank you for this video!! I have been wondering. I'd actually narrowed it down to two, and one of them is the bike you mentioned you're planning on getting. So this video came to me just in time 🙂 now I just have to make the agonizing decision between my two finalists and bite the bullet. Either way I'm getting a 24", because I have owned too many 26" bikes and am still nostalgic about riding the 20" (mine and friends' ) bikes that I rode back in the day, and don't want a cruiser but a true BMX either with a classic or freestyle frame. The only problem I have is getting it, since between the two I like the most, one is out constantly of stock (Monza) and the other only comes in black or green (Haro), definitely not color choices I gravitate to.
Thank you for the info. This video is so packed with information. I’ve had to watch it a few times and think about each point can you bring up? I’m a big guy now and want to get a lot of miles in but I’m not a fan of cruisers. I hate my mountain bike.
Let me know what you end up with. If you want to get a lot of miles in, you probably don’t want a small 20” bike. The thing with mountain bikes is they have the bars low and make you lean so far forward that they can be uncomfortable. (But lower your center of gravity for maneuverability.) BMX cruisers might be the same size as a MTB, but they have different geometry and have you sitting a bit more upright and they are way more comfortable.
Great video with all the break downs. Currently riding a 27.5 se savage flyer. Great bike for cruising around. Stuck between getting a 22 or 24 inch next. Looking for something like when I was a kid just for street riding. Jumping off curbs and doing manual’s. I’m 5’10 230 pounds .
Thanks for the feedback! I hear you on the dilemma between 22 and 24. My take is that if you’re looking to emphasize tricks and jumps more than riding, a 22 would probably be the way to go.
Once me and my buddies rode to a BMX racing track that was a 45 minute car ride away, and was over a 2 hour bike ride away. We arrived at the track as it got dark. Had to call the parents to pick us up, they were NOT happy. 🤣 Never got to ride the track!
OMG, bringing back memories. The only BMX track in my area was also a 2 hour bike ride away. I had a blast, but only made that trek 1 time because I was a complete wreck after, still an amazing memory!

I’m 6ft and have been looking for a cruiser for years. Or I should say an affordable cruiser. I found a Stranger Things 24” Schwinn Predator for a really low price and snapped it up and I have loved every ride on it. I also bought a 26” Apollo mountain bike converted to single speed cruiser and it’s really good too, and my favourite is my 26” Snap On Klunker. I really like that style, the ride position, and it’s great for cruising and some quick stuff but the Predator is so racy, it feels super quick and carves in corners. I’ll do a little bit of dirt track riding on this one. I’m having so much fun with my bikes now, but my BMX’s are just to look at now. I bought a new BMX and the riding style just sucks man. Low seat, straight bars, nah. High layback pole and bars forward forever!!
Yeah, I definitely prefer the old school bike setups too, vs. The modern 20” bmx styles. Like your Predator, I like how my 24” Monza is more nimble than my 26”… it’s more fun. But I prefer the 26” for longer, more casual rides. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences. Good stuff here 👊
I have 2 29” SE bikes. I love the size but the handlebars I just can’t get used to. They’ve short and way too wide. I understand why they are that way however, they just don’t have the comfort of the old school BMX. I’m planning on seriously looking into the Monza bikes.

@@RYAN799 I’m 5’10”. You’d probably be fine on any cruiser style bike, but I suspect you’d enjoy a 24” as it would probably feel more like what you remember from back in the day. But I bet a 26” would feel comfortable too.

24” is just too small unless you’re on the shorter side imo. I’m 45 y/o and 6’2”, so I really enjoy my Fitbikeco cr26 and SE monster quad 29+. Awesome bike actually. Only had to change out the pedals.

My cousin is 45 and i got him back to bmx. He thought he could handle the plastic hemorrhoid seat. NOPE! He said he wnts the wide load granny seat now. I replied get the touring seat with the gel cover. But if he wants the granny seat? Go for it! 😂

I’m not familiar with that Ono bike. It seems “OK” quality, not great. But personally if I was going to get a 29” aluminum bike with gears and disc brakes, I’d just get a mountain bike. But if you want this style of bike, I’d shop around. I think you can still find the 29” GT street Performer bikes for around $500 on sale. I would choose one of those over the Ono without a doubt
If you’re just cruising around the house for short distances, it might be fine. I’m 5’10” and I rarely ride my 20” unless I’m trying tricks. But if you’re more interested in longer casual rides, personally I’d suggest you might be more comfortable on a 24”.

I’m about the same height as you. If you’re looking to just casually ride around the neighborhood while sitting down, I’d suggest at least a 24” and probably a 26”. But if you want to ride more aggressively and do tricks, a standard 20” size is a great option. I’m currently riding a 20” as I’m learning flatland tricks and a 26” when I go on long, leisurely rides.

Thanks for watching and the comments. The SoCal Flyer is a great option. It has quality components like double wall rims and 3 piece cranks. SE has a great reputation, so the value is there. I haven’t ridden one or seen one in person, so it’s hard for me to compare the ride/feel between the two, but the Monza’s top tube is about an inch longer and the bars have a taller rise. Depending on your size, you may find the Monza roomier and more comfortable. The Monza comes with a front brake and the SE doesn’t. The SE comes with pegs, the Monza doesn’t. Some people don’t want one or the other, both can be purchased later, so that’s a personal preference. I love the mags on the Monza, but others prefer spokes. Personally, I like the geometry better on the Monza, I like that it resembles an old school 80s bike more than the SE. And I like that Monza is a smaller brand that’s more of my style. The SE brand seems to be more focused on the wheelie guys, who are awesome, just not my personal style. So yeah, the SoCal Flyer is awesome, but for me, the Monza is a slightly better fit. 👊 Very curious about what you decide to go with and how you like it. 👍
If you are older and want a more stable BMX bike that still feels like a 20", I highly recommend getting a 22" wheel BMX bike. The 24 is okay, but it doesn't ride like a 20".
Thanks for chiming in! I made that video over a year and a half ago now, and while I still haven’t tried a 22” yet, I think your recommendation is solid. Especially for someone who is doing more spirited riding and jumping. I’ve started flatland riding this past year, and I can’t imagine riding anything other than a 20 for that. Buts most older dudes just want to cruise around more casually and I still think a 24” or 26” are best for that 👍

@@bearserker2001 If you’re going to be doing 40 minute rides for transportation, given your height, I’d shy away from anything smaller than 26” and would probably look at 29” first. And then something with smoother tires vs. knobby/race tires for dirt. 47 and just picked up a mint 09 UNUSED FIT Bike Co CR24 with race geometry in chrome for next to nothing. I'm going to take my 12yr old son and his DK Sprinter Pro 24 to the pump track and pump it till the track melts! or I pass-out from exhaustion....😃

I'm 47 and still riding 20". My nephew rides a 22" square setup and I like it a lot. That said, anything above 24" is a mountain bike that will most likely live its life being danced on during wheelies. Long live the 20"!!!! My girlfriend pointed out that my $2,400 custom GT attracts dudes like a rare earth magnet.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, for the avid riders doing tricks, it seems 20 and 22” are still top choices. And the larger ones for cruising around on longer casual rides. I still compare a 20” to a performance sports car, a 24” to an SUV, and 26”+ to a mini van. They all serve a good purpose depending on the terrain, cargo, length of drive, etc. LOL, about your GT being a dude magnet 🤣
Thinking of getting a bmx purely to go to and from work, 10-15 minute ride. I’m 6’1 will a 20 inch wheels and 20 inch frame be ok for me? Or should I at least get a 21 inch frame? @@midsummerex if you’re that tall and prefer 20” wheel size, I’d shoot for at least a 21” top tube if you can. My 20” bike has a 20.5” top tube. I’m 5’10” and it wouldn’t be my choice for a commuter bike.
I guess it depends on the bike. If it’s a cheap bike from Walmart that’s truly designed for kids, it might not hold up to adult riding. And the geometry might be off too. But there are plenty of 24” bikes that work great for adults out there too 👍
Great video! Any recommendations for flatland freestyle bike for a tall old dude? 😀 I'm 47 and 6'5". I bought a Stolen Saint 24" a couple of years ago, but I feel like it's still almost too small for me. I know you mention that the compactness of the 20" is key to doing tricks, but as tall as I am 20" bikes are a no-go. (BTW, I also have a 29" Haro Lineage Group 1 RS-1 as my cruiser. I had an '86 Haro Sport growing up, and it's got similar vibes. Though now I'm hooked and REALLY want to get the Radical Rick 26" or 29".) I'd also LOVE to know how you added those gyro tabs to your Performer. The Saint doesn't have them, and I'd really like it to. Keep up the great work!
That’s a tough call. From what I gather, even the tallest riders prefer a 20” for flatland. I’m no expert, so you might consider emailing or calling Patrick at Flatland Fuel (flatlandfuel.com) and I bet he’d give you more informed advice. He’s super friendly. But if your dead set against a 20”, I would suggest building up a custom bike around the 22” S&M ATF frame, with the longer top tube option. www.sandmbikes.com/product/hardgoods/frames/atf-frame-for-22-wheel/ It would be more of a Hybrid setup than a true flatland bike, but might be a good option. If you remember RL Osborne, one of the best flatland riders of the 80’s, he has a 20” ATF that he does flatland on. I built up a 20” S&M Dagger last year for flatland. It’s a great bike, and building an ATF would be very similar. I’m about to make a bike check video on my dagger, releasing this weekend probably. For the Performer gyro tabs, I drilled holes and then cut the threads with a tap and die kit. Maybe $20 to $25 total in the bit and tapping set. I made a test hole on an old mountain bike and it was much easier than it looked. There are a couple UA-cam videos out there that gave me the basic idea. Let me know if you want more specifics.
I built a 20" with a 21.5-inch top tube frame made by Bombshell, which I bought used for 150 bucks. I admit my very cheap bike is badass after my kind of finish detailing and color themes. I would rather ride my badass made-in-USA BMX than ride an ugly folding bike that will probably break the first curb I jump. I'm a little guy the 20.5 inch top tube bike felt a little small but this size of frame is almost too big for me. It's amazing how much difference an inch makes. I'm keeping it I will get used to it. When I was a kid Schwinn Stingrays were the toughest bikes, that's what we used.
I think every bike I owned is one that I took down to the metal and put brand new bearings in it except for a Gary Fisher I bought new. I put a gas motor on a 79 Schwinn road bike, the motor was the right size but it was too fast to be legal, I had it going about 45mph with just the motor not pedaling. 30mph is the limit. Now I'm doing a BMX and I might do a Schwinn tricycle next year. My uncle had a bike shop he would fix whatever I got to go through hundreds of his bikes and pick one. I didn't pick something worth a lot of money like titanium frames but I got something nice, I gave it new bearings and paint.
My 20” has a 20.5” top tube, and it feels a little small too. I built it up for flatland freestyle and it’s a little large for that. I sort have wished I had gone smaller specifically for flatland, since it feels a little small to me for riding up at the pump track. I think trying to go in between was a mistake. Not a big deal, but just thinking about how I agree with you on just how much difference an inch can make. Sounds like you built a cool bike 👊

Love this video! It's my favorite of yours so far! You can tell a ton of time went into this to prep for it. You hit a lot of good points to consider when someone is looking to get back into BMX as an adult. I know when I started up again, I had no idea what the 29" was like. I was only familiar with the 20" from back in the day. The 24" back then seemed huge when it really wasn't all that much bigger. As an adult who mainly just rides on a cruise level, the 29 definitely is one of the easiest and most comfortable bikes to ride. I've really been enjoying the 26" bikes too though and so I was excited to try out the 24". I think you are gonna love that Monza when it gets there. Man, that pump track looks awesome! There is talk on our island about building one and I've reached out to the people in charge to let them know I'd like to help out with that. It's so interesting to hear everyone's takes on the their favorite size for cruising. I still haven't tried a 29", and I know a lot of guys love those. My intention wasn't to start a bike collection, and I think the 24" will be my sweet spot. But I know myself too well, and I'm sure I'll find a reason to add a 22" and a 29" to the stable within the next year or two. Haha.

Agreed. I’m 44 years old and currently own a 26in hyper jet fuel. I know it’s not top of the line but for my budget it serves me well until I save enough for something more premium. 26 inch is the perfect size for me , 6 foot, 215lbs

Karate Kid had a Mongoose Kos Cruiser. I owned a 26" OG. Today I BMX with an RSD Middlechild with a one speed automatic transmission and 4 pot disc brakes. Gearing is 30:14. Trialsy, you betcha since I require that if I am going to hire a bike. BMX tracks in the area, that is where it gets really good! A bike that fits, has the form and function for a 6' tall rider with loooong arms. 27.5 wheels, 50mm rims and 3" tires that are lighter than most 26, 27.5 and 29's out there perhaps many 24's as well. Still, have to love all of the BMX classes that have raced. They are bringing smiles to many faces and making memories like a smile factory! 4130 makes for better longevity and proper frame flex. Tire pressure is key, don't overinflate for the load.
When I looked into the OG Diamond Back BMX'rs that were around way way back in their first couple years, prices were an eye opener.
Being up in the mountains, I am always on the lookout for more singletrack, preferably engineered and built by the local deer population. Some of the trails the deer have created have such lovely flow and are a hoot!
What I can say is, BMX can bring out the best in people! Taking my pit to the BMX track and having a race and cooking up good food to share with out community is an amazing afternoon of good times.

This video would have been great before I bought the bike, but I figured it out on my own and did right anyway. Im 54 now 5’9” and 185. Went 4130 Chrome moly frame with 22.25 top tube. I live way out in the desert on a ranch, so Im always on dirt. This bike is perfect for jumps! I almost went with a 26” and Im glad I didn’t! But I cant see someone around 6’ being comfortable tooling around city streets on a 24”. Great video!

With that said, my husband is wanting to retire the mountain bike era and return to the BMX,. grown up style. Appreciate the information! I'm an old BMXer from the late 70s early 80s and want to be able to mostly cruise, hop a curb, and hit a lift with a touch of air from time to time and MAYBE even race (the track is two hours away). I just wish USA BMX had a cruiser class for 26" wheels; as popular as they're getting. Anyway, 59 years young now and getting ready to start selling off stuff to get my next bike.

Great video! My first bike as an adult was he Mona 24" with Tuff ll's. Love it! But I'd recommend some spokes if you're gonna jump it. Skyways can only take Maybe 60 psi. I'd buy an extra spoke wheeset for jumps. I love cruising it in the fall. I then bought a 26" Haro, 29" GT Pro World Tour, then some 20" bikes, but my custom build S&M ATF 22" is the best all around for making me feel like I did as a kid. I'm 47 yrs old 5'11" 225 lbs. Love the 22". I chose the 21.625 toptube but wish I would have chose the 22.125. I bought my wife a FIT series 22 and it has the 22.125 toptube an is way more stable on pump tracks. I want the White Monza with Tuff ll's next!!! When I bought my Monza a few yrs ago they only had the 1" threaded headsets. A little creaky. Haha but now that they offer the 1 1/8 threadless... even better
Thanks for the feedback. You make a good point about considering getting an extra spoke wheel set for jumping. Adding that to my wishlist for down the road! Dang, you're quite a few steps ahead of me in our journey of going down the bike rabbit hole. You've got a nice collection there. I haven't tried a 22" yet, maybe that'll be down the road for me too. I have a 20" S&M Dagger. I like it, but it just feels too small. I sort of wish I had gotten their 20" ATF, but maybe that'll be my 22" bike if I ever get one. 5’10” 170, I’m on 20” same as when I started in the 90s. I actually live in a city in Asia now and use my BMX to commute 90% of the time. Keeps me in great shape.

20" all the way. 41yo 6'5" no problem. The difference is that the top tube, handlebars, stem, and cranks are all longer. The seat is set higher too. No need for bigger wheels

I came to say the same. 20" is the only way to go. Now, I am smaller than most guys, 5'10" , so maybe that helps. But nothing feels like a 20".

I recently attended an old school BMX race event was held called "Dirtyfest." It was cool to see so many guys racing 26 and 29 inch bikes. I'm starting to see a big move back to 26 inch race bikes (OM Flyer, for example). 26 was the original cruiser size in the late 70s.
It’s so cool that we’re able to attend that event. I saw it all over social media and in some UA-cam videos. It looked awesome 😎 lIt does seem like 26” is the sweet spot for a lot of folks.

24 to me is the new 20. I'm still the same height as I was when I stopped racing in 1985, but 20 inches now seem too small and 24 inches seem about right. I'd like to give an OS20 a whirl though. My next purchase is going to be a 26 incher, either Race Inc, SE, or Supercross.

To my surprise, I came across lots of positive reviews l. so I decided to go on their site and buy one . I had no idea how much i was going to like the bike. I absolutely love it, and today, I'm waiting on my 26-inch white one . And trust me, these two won't be the last ones I buy 😊

All of those considerations went out of the window when i saw it online for sale....saying that, a lot of the things you highlight to factor in are innate in us old school riders not so much the ethical choices as we were kids and fantastic you have put all of them down like this. Out of the box I had to retension the rear wheel (the spokes were all loose), and the stock brake pads squealed and chattered badly, but other than that it's been great. It's one of those "you get what you pay for" situations, and you can see why this bike costs a bit more than the other 22 inches out there. I use it on the pump track and just for cruising around.
Mostly cruising but doing bar rides and hang 5s on a GT Street performer 29" @ 53 Brooklyn, NY. Keep fit and get out there.

I set up my 26er colony eclipse for freestyle and cruising, gyro, 4 pegs, planetary free coaster. Works perfect for me, I'm in my 40s. I can still do a few flatland tricks and it's fun cruising around jumping curbs. Keep shredding 🤙

I'm 53 and have owned a jet XL 24 for a few months. I love it however main issues are 1 it's a race bike, it's cheap, it will break easily and the wheels are already showing signs of failure because they're starting to buckle slightly just from dropping off a roadside kerb. Trust me UK kerbs are way lower than in the USA. 2 seat height is way too low. I have to ride it standing all of the time. I bought a long seat post only to discover the seat on the bike is moulded to the seat post so I need a new seat, and I've no idea what type because the clamp is flat not rounded so maybe a MTB style seat will fit? 3 bar height. Way too low. I'll need to fit taller bars. I don't like having to crouch forward all the time. Apart from these niggles I LOVE IT. I bought a 20 inch Hoffman condor 25 anniversary frame and built it up and it never felt right. It felt too small. I also bought a 27.5 MTB and hated the crossbar height and the crouched forward "thing" and the 24 is perfect apart from having to reassess the seat, the bars, and not so much build quality because that is actually great but build MATERIALS and cheap components. What I want eventually? 2020 haro dmc master. Because it's dimensions, paint, build quality, can take abuse etc and the fact it doesn't look like any other cruiser matter. Now to actually find one...... And the mortgage to buy one!
Yeah, a 24” is a nice blend between a 20” and a larger MTB or bigger wheel BMX. I love my 24” for that reason. I’m learning flatland tricks, so I’ve actually been riding my 20” more lately. Those Haros are rad, good luck with the search 👊

As an adult my bmx choice is a 24in racing cruiser. You can build em up to be light, super strong and comfortable.
Awesome! I just got that 24” Monza and I’m really loving the size and geometry. It’s definitely lighter and more nimble than my 26”, but still comfortable. So now speaking from experience, I totally agree with you. 👊👍😎
I wish I found info like this when I went shopping. As a 6'3" guy who got too big for my bmx young. I went shopping for the bmx fun in my 40's. I got no help at the bike shops at the time. It's been several years since I bought a 26". While I bought a good bike I may of made a different choice with better info like you shared.

While I always loved BMX too, I got way more into skating back in the day, and while I never stopped skating for more than a few years at a time, I went about 30 years without riding a BMX bike and I’ve been enjoying rediscovering it in recent years. Mags and a lightweight frame sound great 🙌

So this video came to me just in time 🙂 now I just have to make the agonizing decision between my two finalists and bite the bullet. Either way I'm getting a 24", because I have owned too many 26" bikes and am still nostalgic about riding the 20" (mine and friends' ) bikes that I rode back in the day, and don't want a cruiser but a true BMX either with a classic or freestyle frame. The only problem I have is getting it, since between the two I like the most, one is out constantly of stock (Monza) and the other only comes in black or green (Haro), definitely not color choices I gravitate to.

Thank you for the info. This video is so packed with information. I’ve had to watch it a few times and think about each point can you bring up? I’m a big guy now and want to get a lot of miles in but I’m not a fan of cruisers. I hate my mountain bike.
Let me know what you end up with. If you want to get a lot of miles in, you probably don’t want a small 20” bike. The thing with mountain bikes is they have the bars low and make you lean so far forward that they can be uncomfortable. (But lower your center of gravity for maneuverability.) BMX cruisers might be the same size as a MTB, but they have different geometry and have you sitting a bit more upright and they are way more comfortable.
Great video with all the break downs. Currently riding a 27.5 se savage flyer. Great bike for cruising around. Stuck between getting a 22 or 24 inch next. Looking for something like when I was a kid just for street riding. Jumping off curbs and doing manual’s. I’m 5’10 230 pounds .
Thanks for the feedback! I hear you on the dilemma between 22 and 24. My take is that if you’re looking to emphasize tricks and jumps more than riding, a 22 would probably be the way to go.
I’m 40, 6’0”, 225, got a 20” cult control and put 11” bars on it. Love it. Had it 8 months.
Once me and my buddies rode to a BMX racing track that was a 45 minute car ride away, and was over a 2 hour bike ride away. We arrived at the track as it got dark. Had to call the parents to pick us up, they were NOT happy. 🤣 Never got to ride the track!

OMG, bringing back memories. The only BMX track in my area was also a 2 hour bike ride away. I had a blast, but only made that trek 1 time because I was a complete wreck after, still an amazing memory!
I decided to go with a Haro Hoover last year at a great price. I just bought a second bmx that's on its way to me, and it's a kink switch.

I’m 6ft and have been looking for a cruiser for years. Or I should say an affordable cruiser. I found a Stranger Things 24” Schwinn Predator for a really low price and snapped it up and I have loved every ride on it. I also bought a 26” Apollo mountain bike converted to single speed cruiser and it’s really good too, and my favourite is my 26” Snap On Klunker. I really like that style, the ride position, and it’s great for cruising and some quick stuff but the Predator is so racy, it feels super quick and carves in corners. I’ll do a little bit of dirt track riding on this one. I’m having so much fun with my bikes now, but my BMX’s are just to look at now. I bought a new BMX and the riding style just sucks man. Low seat, straight bars, nah. High layback pole and bars forward forever!!
Yeah, I definitely prefer the old school bike setups too, vs. The modern 20” bmx styles. Like your Predator, I like how my 24” Monza is more nimble than my 26”… it’s more fun. But I prefer the 26” for longer, more casual rides. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences. Good stuff here 👊

I have 2 29” SE bikes. I love the size but the handlebars I just can’t get used to. They’ve short and way too wide. I understand why they are that way however, they just don’t have the comfort of the old school BMX. I’m planning on seriously looking into the Monza bikes.

@@RYAN799 I’m 5’10”. You’d probably be fine on any cruiser style bike, but I suspect you’d enjoy a 24” as it would probably feel more like what you remember from back in the day. But I bet a 26” would feel comfortable too.

24” is just too small unless you’re on the shorter side imo. I’m 45 y/o and 6’2”, so I really enjoy my Fitbikeco cr26 and SE monster quad 29+. Awesome bike actually. Only had to change out the pedals.

My cousin is 45 and i got him back to bmx. He thought he could handle the plastic hemorrhoid seat. NOPE! He said he wnts the wide load granny seat now. I replied get the touring seat with the gel cover. But if he wants the granny seat? Go for it! 😂

I have Monza 26..I would covet you thoughts on the Ono BMX 29 -9 speed on Amazon..
I’m not familiar with that Ono bike. It seems “OK” quality, not great. But personally if I was going to get a 29” aluminum bike with gears and disc brakes, I’d just get a mountain bike. But if you want this style of bike, I’d shop around. I think you can still find the 29” GT street Performer bikes for around $500 on sale. I would choose one of those over the Ono without a doubt

If you’re just cruising around the house for short distances, it might be fine. I’m 5’10” and I rarely ride my 20” unless I’m trying tricks. But if you’re more interested in longer casual rides, personally I’d suggest you might be more comfortable on a 24”.

I’m about the same height as you. If you’re looking to just casually ride around the neighborhood while sitting down, I’d suggest at least a 24” and probably a 26”. But if you want to ride more aggressively and do tricks, a standard 20” size is a great option. I’m currently riding a 20” as I’m learning flatland tricks and a 26” when I go on long, leisurely rides.

Thanks for watching and the comments. The SoCal Flyer is a great option. It has quality components like double wall rims and 3 piece cranks. SE has a great reputation, so the value is there. I haven’t ridden one or seen one in person, so it’s hard for me to compare the ride/feel between the two, but the Monza’s top tube is about an inch longer and the bars have a taller rise. Depending on your size, you may find the Monza roomier and more comfortable. The Monza comes with a front brake and the SE doesn’t. The SE comes with pegs, the Monza doesn’t. Some people don’t want one or the other, both can be purchased later, so that’s a personal preference. I love the mags on the Monza, but others prefer spokes. Personally, I like the geometry better on the Monza, I like that it resembles an old school 80s bike more than the SE. And I like that Monza is a smaller brand that’s more of my style. The SE brand seems to be more focused on the wheelie guys, who are awesome, just not my personal style. So yeah, the SoCal Flyer is awesome, but for me, the Monza is a slightly better fit. 👊 Very curious about what you decide to go with and how you like it. 👍
If you are older and want a more stable BMX bike that still feels like a 20", I highly recommend getting a 22" wheel BMX bike.
The 24 is okay, but it doesn't ride like a 20".

Especially for someone who is doing more spirited riding and jumping. I’ve started flatland riding this past year, and I can’t imagine riding anything other than a 20 for that. Buts most older dudes just want to cruise around more casually and I still think a 24” or 26” are best for that 👍

And then something with smoother tires vs. knobby/race tires for dirt. 47 and just picked up a mint 09 UNUSED FIT Bike Co CR24 with race geometry in chrome for next to nothing. I'm going to take my 12yr old son and his DK Sprinter Pro 24 to the pump track and pump it till the track melts! or I pass-out from exhaustion....😃

I'm 47 and still riding 20". My nephew rides a 22" square setup and I like it a lot.
That said, anything above 24" is a mountain bike that will most likely live its life being danced on during wheelies.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, for the avid riders doing tricks, it seems 20 and 22” are still top choices. And the larger ones for cruising around on longer casual rides. I still compare a 20” to a performance sports car, a 24” to an SUV, and 26”+ to a mini van. They all serve a good purpose depending on the terrain, cargo, length of drive, etc.

Thinking of getting a bmx purely to go to and from work, 10-15 minute ride. I’m 6’1 will a 20 inch wheels and 20 inch frame be ok for me? Or should I at least get a 21 inch frame? @@midsummerex if you’re that tall and prefer 20” wheel size, I’d shoot for at least a 21” top tube if you can. My 20” bike has a 20.5” top tube. I’m 5’10” and it wouldn’t be my choice for a commuter bike.

I guess it depends on the bike. If it’s a cheap bike from Walmart that’s truly designed for kids, it might not hold up to adult riding. And the geometry might be off too. But there are plenty of 24” bikes that work great for adults out there too 👍

I bought a Stolen Saint 24" a couple of years ago, but I feel like it's still almost too small for me. I know you mention that the compactness of the 20" is key to doing tricks, but as tall as I am 20" bikes are a no-go. (BTW, I also have a 29" Haro Lineage Group 1 RS-1 as my cruiser. I had an '86 Haro Sport growing up, and it's got similar vibes. Though now I'm hooked and REALLY want to get the Radical Rick 26" or 29".) I'd also LOVE to know how you added those gyro tabs to your Performer. The Saint doesn't have them, and I'd really like it to. Keep up the great work!
That’s a tough call. From what I gather, even the tallest riders prefer a 20” for flatland. I’m no expert, so you might consider emailing or calling Patrick at Flatland Fuel (flatlandfuel.com) and I bet he’d give you more informed advice. He’s super friendly. But if your dead set against a 20”, I would suggest building up a custom bike around the 22” S&M ATF frame, with the longer top tube option. www.sandmbikes.com/product/hardgoods/frames/atf-frame-for-22-wheel/ It would be more of a Hybrid setup than a true flatland bike, but might be a good option. If you remember RL Osborne, one of the best flatland riders of the 80’s, he has a 20” ATF that he does flatland on.
I built up a 20” S&M Dagger last year for flatland. It’s a great bike, and building an ATF would be very similar. I’m about to make a bike check video on my dagger, releasing this weekend probably.
For the Performer gyro tabs, I drilled holes and then cut the threads with a tap and die kit. Maybe $20 to $25 total in the bit and tapping set. I made a test hole on an old mountain bike and it was much easier than it looked. There are a couple UA-cam videos out there that gave me the basic idea. Let me know if you want more specifics.

I built a 20" with a 21.5-inch top tube frame made by Bombshell, which I bought used for 150 bucks. I admit my very cheap bike is badass after my kind of finish detailing and color themes. I would rather ride my badass made-in-USA BMX than ride an ugly folding bike that will probably break the first curb I jump. I'm a little guy the 20.5 inch top tube bike felt a little small but this size of frame is almost too big for me. It's amazing how much difference an inch makes. I'm keeping it I will get used to it. When I was a kid Schwinn Stingrays were the toughest bikes, that's what we used.
I think every bike I owned is one that I took down to the metal and put brand new bearings in it except for a Gary Fisher I bought new. I put a gas motor on a 79 Schwinn road bike, the motor was the right size but it was too fast to be legal, I had it going about 45mph with just the motor not pedaling. 30mph is the limit. Now I'm doing a BMX and I might do a Schwinn tricycle next year. My uncle had a bike shop he would fix whatever I got to go through hundreds of his bikes and pick one. I didn't pick something worth a lot of money like titanium frames but I got something nice, I gave it new bearings and paint.
My 20” has a 20.5” top tube, and it feels a little small too. I built it up for flatland freestyle and it’s a little large for that. I sort have wished I had gone smaller specifically for flatland, since it feels a little small to me for riding up at the pump track. I think trying to go in between was a mistake. Not a big deal, but just thinking about how I agree with you on just how much difference an inch can make. Sounds like you built a cool bike 👊

I am getting a 22”or 24” soon my bike got stolen (87 schwinn predator) I miss it gotta get something else (edit) I am 35 by the way and never stopped riding.
