Meet The Americans Skating For South Korea | NBC News
These two are very well received in South Korea. Their performance was so touching for everyone with Korean heritage... Also Min Yura is so cheerful and optimistic that we love her personality!
I don't see why people are so upset over this. I'm pretty sure it happens all the time. It only seems different because this guy just looks so different compared to South Koreans. I get everyone wants to push nationalism and country pride for the Olympics but athletes are also individuals who have their own pursuits within the sport. They were honest about it. They love skating and wanted to do it on an Olympic Stage. The guy learned Korean language and culture so he could pass the citizenship test. They both seem to happily embrace South Korea and the fans. Good for them, they knew what they wanted and found a way to achieve it.
Pretty sure it's white people having more of a problem with it than Koreans LMAO they seemed fine with it, and they made a beautiful tribute to the country with their free dance (Arirang)
Well...I'm Korean and I am actually quite proud of them. They used Korean national folk song in their free dance this season and I really think they represented my country well at the Olympics so...what's the matter? All the other Koreans love them as well. I don't see any problem? :)
Sohyangs song was awesome!!!! Too bad they took out Dokdo!
They just didn't want any controversy about it and I'm sure everyone would do the same thing realistically speaking...Figure skating is funded a lot by Japanese companies along with Russian companies. Many people say it's safe to not play with the nerves of Japan and Russia in this industry so I get why they didn't include that part in their free dance. And most importantly, Yura and Alex are figure skaters, not historians nor ambassador of Dokdo ;)
Los geht's Korea. Wir lieben Korea, den Norden und den Süden. Schöne Ferienzeit 🎄🎶🎻🔔☃️🌷
@@user-qp7wi3rg1w what do you think about north Korean skaters I find them more cute and good just lack in some area they are really good Kim ji suk the korean girl is my favourite
So good to see how they didn't give up their Olympic dream. They're amazing!
Im pretty sure that people who are saying that they chose the "easy way" will never ever be able to make to olympics no matter which country they belong in
She looks much better without makeup! Lucky girl!
Respects to them. They left it all and moved to another country with another life style.
She is so beautiful !!!
All the best to both of you!...
Alex Gamelin is my ice dance coach, before I switched free style coaches he was my only coach that understood how to teach me in order to help me improve... real nice guy, really funny.
It was awesome to see Sohyang meeting Yura!!!
That’s my cousin
They look cute together.
Chasing your dreams 👍
She went to my school..
Every Olympics I get grabbed by stories like this. When I was 30 I watched USA vs USSR in gold medal hockey match. I knew nothing about hockey, but I was out of my chair.
I cried when I watched their arirang performance and now I'm a huge fan!! Keep up the good work!
제일 아름다웠던 경기였어요ㅠㅠㅠㅜ 화이팅💕
I SKATE HERE ALEX IS MY COACH
I think the main reason why they did this is that they probably did not have much chance of representing Team USA.
They were pretty honest about it. They love the sport, they love what they do and they wanna do it on an Olympic stage and this was an opportunity for it. The fact that the guy learned the language and culture to get citizenship just shows how much they really wanted this. and that's admirable
I know this is petty, but could nbc really not find someone to narrate the subtitles?
Im not sure why all of you typing Im not sure why people are upset....not seeing too many comments of people upset....just a bunch of I dont know why people are upset....interesting....
Omg I'm from Novi too. I recognized from the Korean restaurant often frequented there (Bibimbap) and I didn't know they had such a good ice skating rink for trainers. Also, it must be super quick and easy to get citizenship in Korea!
I mean American recognize dual citizenship , so it is beneficial for them anyway 👯👯
Wait, do they get dual citizenships or do they have to give up one and take the other?
They have to give up on one.
Thanks Howard. Well, that would be a tough decision for me. However, if they want to become US citizen again, they can ask their American family members to sponsor them again I guess.
lol, people over here fighting about how legitimate their citizenship is, and here I am focusing on them being in Detorit @ 0:52 because it made me think of Yuri on Ice. So many people so mad about his, but its common. Because the American Team has so many people, athletes with dual citizenship represent the other side of their blood/family. -the double standards tho, smh-
LOL. You do realize there are very many Americans who do this. Not that big of a deal
Its funny how americans cant be on the asian team. If asians are not allowed on the american team they wouldnt win medals pshh #GIVEBACKOURASIANS
pan da you know at this Olympic team usa, They brought 7 asians....
What are you even trying to say?
GOD BLESS KOREA, NORTH AND SOUTH. Hey, no matter where we are born we can decide and choose for ourselves which country we make our identity. The real "americans" are dead or living on some reservations. Schöne Ferienzeit, viel Erfolg viel Spaß, Prost 🎄🎶🎻🔔🌷☃️
ok 2 .
The girl I get being first generation Korean American and all.
The dude however... that's a stretch. I don't know if I can ever compete against my own country.
I think foremost the Olympics is about human athleticism and achievement. I kind of get it, this was their way to progress and be a part of that. also I am impressed that he learned Korean and studied a lot for the citizenship
Other athletes go against where there parents were born so idk why it’s so different from this
it's not about the country it's about the sport
Are you in some way trying to imply that the girl was never American in the first place and the guy is automatically American because he is white?
so what are you saying about the shibutani siblings, karen chan, nathan chen, and mirai nagasu lol if there are asian americans, there are american korean, american chinese, etc. there are a lot of pairs, especially, who are interracial and have to choose a country of their partner's. nothing wrong there.
Traitors lol. How do you play against your own country?
How ridiculous!! It may be for the love of the sport but not for the love of the country. That Korean citizenship test is difficult and quite elite....... lived in South K 7 years myself and NO MATTER WHAT we are always treated as outsiders........ this guy does not reverse the citizenship. SAd.
Wow, a racist statement. What the F is "ethnic Americans"?
Europa Man Yellows.... wow! What an ignorant racist!
Europa Man
But why are Asians yellow? How is she yellow compared to him? Is she jaundiced? She seems to have the exact same skin color.
Ethnic Americans? Are you talking about Native Americans? lmfao😂Made me laugh
Sorry but asian is a race. The word "Asian" refers to the people who live in Asia. But "Asian" itself is categorized as a race.
She got her chopsticks backwards. You can’t do that. Very disrespectful
give her a fork
I don't thing so. try see again. She got chopsticks correctly which flat and wide on back.
first of all, she got it right. second of all, it's not disgraceful.
She didn't tho
that's the right way to use chopsticks lol
So they wasn’t good enough for the US team so they ditch it and go the easy way to the Olympics with another country. WTF .
Kanoho Lau pretty sure going to another country, becoming a citizen of that country, & compete to represent that country is definitely not the "easy way."
Kanoho Lau That happens all the time.
They still have to qualify to get there
The “Germans” who won pairs are actually from Ukraine (her) and France (him), respectively. This happens all of the time in figure skating. Many of the lower tier singles skaters you see representing other countries are actually Americans who are either first generation and represent their parent’s country of origin or they were born abroad and have duel citizenship.
I’m pretty sure this happens in tennis and other sports too.
she looks like north korean
Peter Park i'm korea. She doesn't look like north korean.
Hi Park. it is not funny.
Peter Park what is wrong with that nKorean chicks are more gogerse then skorean u sound mad ignorant kid
Trish, do not put your word like trash
I bet they are sad that they are not on Trump's team. Maybe we should not allow those two back in the US.
We don't care about Orange jerk. We are just interested to listen to any athlete's story.
you are evidently a trump supporter. your opinions are automatically invalid.
u must be one of those unwilling moron who got fooled by russian propaganda
