Interesting episode as it knits together several events Satakarni, Tamils, Western dialect of Prakrit, Jain image, Yavanas, Magadh, possibly Shungas. I read about Kharavela in A L Basham and the Tamil event in Nilakantha Sastri. The etymology of Kharavel is one question
Khara means salt or salty, vela means coast. Even today a beach is called "Bela Bhumi" in Odia. Kharavela therefore means "Salt Coast" or "Salty Coast", a logical name for some one whose kingdom bordered the sea.
King Maheghavahan Aira Kharavela's achievement is no less than other great kings. But it's not publicized or taught by mainstream education. So nobody outside Odisha knows about this great king who drove away Greek forces from Mathura to beyond Sindhu river.

Jyotirmaya mohanty, did you forget how our odia khandyat also killed 2 lakh army of ashoka, odia khandyat also massacre large army killing many army of ashoka,
King Ashoka didn't employ a single foreign mercenary. Instead all the Kshatriyas saw all foreigners as malechas. Kalidas writes that when Ashoka came to Kashmir, he expelled all people'of foreign origins. So yes they were very race conscious. Kalingas and other indo aryan groups were not seen as foreigners but different nation states.
You said that some scholars interpret the Tamra or Tamira people as Tamil ppl living in south. Is there any other interpretation? Do all schoalrs agree on that? Could you give more infor about different interpretations?
The maurya empire fought war of kalinga and take kalina jin ( bangwan rishabhnath) to magadh after 100 years kalinaga is ruled by raja kharvel and take return kalinga jin
The oldest mention of the Tamil Confederacy gets it's mention from Hathigumpa Inscription The Tamira Confederacy: The Mauryas, ruled Kalinga before Kharavela, and they find mention in Tamil Sangam literature which talks of the parasols, banners and chariots of the Mauryas; Mauryas cutting paths in mountains for their chariots to pass; Refers Mauryas as strangers (vamba moriyar) who came with a desire to conquer the South. So, these are proofs of Mauryan military ambitions in Tamil Regions. But there are no records of a Mauryan conquest of the Tamil region. Maybe, because of the Mauryan threat, the Tamil kings banded together, and their unity acted as a deterrent. This is the confederacy that Kharavela perhaps broke, roughly around 173 or 172 BCE. If the confederacy was 113 years old at that time, then it must have come into existence around 285 or 286 BCE, which would be the time of the Mauryan ruler Bindusara, the father of Emperor Asoka.

@@JayVardhanSingh cool, I love ur videos. Have always had a particular affinity for history and archaelogy. About to start college soon, thinking of choosing history or philosophy as my major if I do BA. Idk, much about my own family history sadly :(.but my grandfather says we were independent nawabs and sultans based primarily in southern and central india, and that after the revolt of 1857 when my ancestors sided with bahadur shah zafar, the British derided us of all our regal titles, seized our money, properties and jewellery and left us destitute. After that we came under the service of the nizams who bestowed upon my paternal great-great-great grandfather the 'Jagīr' of Gogi in modern-day Karnataka. The name Sayyid/Sayed/Syed or any of it's other variations means "Lord" or "baron" in arabic, and is conferred on the descendants of Prophet Muhammad through Husayn . My ancestors most likely came to India from Iran in the 12th century as refugees to evade the Mongol horde. That's it, that's all I know.
@Самрат Рой yes that is true many hindu nobles and merchants converted to Islam and adopted elite arab titles. But even after that, these people were still part of the nobility in India. My ancestors themselves were nawābs
@Самрат Рой predominantly in the South. My great great great grandfather was the جاگیردار (Jagīrdaar) of Gogi in modern-day karnataka. He was granted this by nizām mahboob ali khan after his forefathers rebelled against the British in 1857 and lost all their land, titles, holding etc.
Good video again Jay. There is a theory that the Tramira kings mentioned in this inscription are likely to be local rulers near river Krishna delta who spoke a dialect of Tamil and not three Tamil dynasties of the southern india. Any comments?
Thank you, most scholars are of the opinion that these Tramira were probably chieftains of Tamilakam. But all of this is speculation, we have only one line and there's no other evidence. So, hard to conclusively say which theory is true.
My theory is that Kharabela existed before Mouryan Empire. That's why there was a mention of Nanda king but not any Mouryan king. Another point is that, Jainism was very popular until Chandrgupta Mourya, because Kharabela was also a follower of Jainism. We don't see many kings after this period. 3rd point is Kali ga was a strong empire until the Kalinga war by Ashoka. It is not so believable that after a bloody defeat in this war Kalinga could became power again in 100 years. Most probably the Kharabela's empire existed until the Kalinga war.
Tamra was probably tamralipta -- today's medinipur of west bengal near balasore, odisha .. may not be Tamil .. Tamralipta port was most important for magadha, Anga , odisha and central India .. it's just neighbour of odisha ..
satavahana and kharavela belonged to same clan sada which is wrongly mentioned as chedi.kalinga and andhra were twin branches of same race but not same as odhra.kshara vela is sanskritised south indian name khara velu or person with sharp weapon. It is also mentioned in jain ramayans that ravan was king of mahamega vahana dynasty in vindhya region.
Karri Velu or Kharabela. He belongs to Tamilnadu. His father's name was Vardha Rajan.Karri Velu means Black Velu or Dark Kartikeyan.Karri Velu Ayyar became Kharbela Aira.
Bande Kalinga, Bande Kharabela

Welcome!
Kharvela Dynasty was Chedi Yadav 🗿
Source?
Are Khawar descended of khayaravala dynasty????
Is that why some Odias still have the name Kharavela?
nice video...please make a video about your book collection..
Thank you. I will try to do so in future.
@@JayVardhanSingh Which Mauryan King was in Hathigupha Inscription?
I don't think this inscription mentions any Mauryan King.
The oldest mention of the Tamil Confederacy gets it's mention from Hathigumpa Inscription
The Tamira Confederacy:
The Mauryas, ruled Kalinga before Kharavela, and they find mention in Tamil Sangam literature which talks of the parasols, banners and chariots of the Mauryas; Mauryas cutting paths in mountains for their chariots to pass; Refers Mauryas as strangers (vamba moriyar) who came with a desire to conquer the South.
The achievements of Odias are not concocted stories but evidence based facts.
Don't dismiss them as stories for entertainment.
Very nice and informative.
thank you

That's quite an interesting history.
Maharaj kharvel was devoted jain king
Good video again Jay. There is a theory that the Tramira kings mentioned in this inscription are likely to be local rulers near river Krishna delta who spoke a dialect of Tamil and not three Tamil dynasties of the southern india. Any comments?
Thank you, most scholars are of the opinion that these Tramira were probably chieftains of Tamilakam. But all of this is speculation, we have only one line and there's no other evidence. So, hard to conclusively say which theory is true.
Mighty chandel rajputra❤❤
Can you make a video about prakrit language
My theory is that Kharabela existed before Mouryan Empire. That's why there was a mention of Nanda king but not any Mouryan king. Another point is that, Jainism was very popular until Chandrgupta Mourya, because Kharabela was also a follower of Jainism. We don't see many kings after this period. 3rd point is Kali ga was a strong empire until the Kalinga war by Ashoka. It is not so believable that after a bloody defeat in this war Kalinga could became power again in 100 years. Most probably the Kharabela's empire existed until the Kalinga war.
Respect to King Kharavela from descendant of Somvanshi Jajati Keshri.
Another mighty king of Odisha was King Langula Narasingha Deba👍

Kalinga lipi is the oldest lipi in the world.. around 22,000 years old.
Tamra was probably tamralipta -- today's medinipur of west bengal near balasore, odisha .. may not be Tamil ..
Tamralipta port was most important for magadha, Anga , odisha and central India .. it's just neighbour of odisha ..
At one point of time, it was even part of Utkal.
Tamralipti was under Kharavela who would he fight there?
@@mtarkes I don't know about kharabela .. but tamralipta was close to today's tamluk sub urban town
@@DipanBaishnab-kz5zb probably .. that region is close to bengal - odisha border

satavahana and kharavela belonged to same clan sada which is wrongly mentioned as chedi.kalinga and andhra were twin branches of same race but not same as odhra.kshara vela is sanskritised south indian name khara velu or person with sharp weapon.
It is also mentioned in jain ramayans that ravan was king of mahamega vahana dynasty in vindhya region.
🙏
Karri Velu or Kharabela. He belongs to Tamilnadu. His father's name was Vardha Rajan.Karri Velu means Black Velu or Dark Kartikeyan.Karri Velu Ayyar became Kharbela Aira.
