Step By Step Bonding Guide | A MUST SEE FOR EVERY Sugar Glider Owner

- Bonding with sugar gliders can be very discouraging and stressful… I am taking the emotion out of it, looking at this through a difference lens. I know you want to love on your baby… all new owners do… but your new baby may not want to love on you yet and you need to respect that!

Rushing these steps and/ or chasing your glider around the cage with your hand is not going to help. It will set you back days or months in your bond.

Bonding has a LOT to do with getting to know their personalities, and getting over your insecurities and your fears about them. Don’t try to HOLD them, let them hold on to you. Hands can be very scary to some sugar gliders. Look like a mouth.
Open environment pouches can work really well when gliders are learning to trust you… they see you coming and don’t just hear a “scary new sound”
If you find something that makes your glider’s breathing speed up or crab or bite, try to avoid doing that thing. Do not change your shampoo, lotion, perfume cologne while you are in the process of bonding. This confuse the gliders because thy are very sent oriented and they may not recognize you and could set your bonding back.One thing that you can do at any stage of bonding and you never have to stop doing if you don’t want to is putting little blankets of fleece that smell like you in their sleeping pouch.
*Ground 0= Glider is lunging
(glider is lunging/ and crabbing when you even come close to the cage.)
Use move chair closer technique “it’s ok” talk to them in a calm voice.
-when to move on… when lunging stops or dramatically decreases. You can sit by the cage without them trying to attack you.
*Step 1= Sit by the cage and talk/ read/ sit quietly (2 hrs a day) one hour during day and 1 at night) Open environment pouch would be great! Offer treats through the bars.
-Move to the next step when the glider takes the treat from you regularly and no longer crabs or lunches when out of the pouch or they see you. They may still crab from the pouch or before they see you and recognize you.
*Step 2= Try a zippered bonding pouch. (if they attack and crab and try to escape from the pouch after the first few min… discontinue the bonding pouch and continue doing step 1 longer) Bonding touch, hold pouch tight Burbon says to hum silent night or a soothing song. Little fleece blankets that you have had in their sleeping pouch can be placed in the bonding bag to help them feel more at home when training to do this… treats never hurt to reinforce them staying the the bag either.
-Continue to do the bonding bag zipped up even when you move to the next step. At some point you may decide to swap the zippered bonding bag for a no sew bra pouch. • Learn From My Mistakes... Only move to this step when they are not trying to escape from the zippered bag. Any time you have your glider out of a secure space (cage or zippered bag) make sure you are in a “slider safe” room until you feel “reasonably confident” that they will not jump off of you. • How To Know That Your ...
*Step 3= Continue the bonding bag daily and then you have your choice of what kind of “lifestyle bonding” you want to choose. This is where you need to decide what kind of daily activity will work best for you and your gliders. Many decide to do tent time with their gliders. Some choose to do bathroom bonding time where they sit in the bathtub and let the gliders climb on them there. Some decide to “glider-proof” a whole room and spend time letting them run around and explore in that room with them. (I have personally tried and enjoyed elements of all of these forms of bonding) Ultimately I chose to do the arguably harder 4th form of bonding. (Training my gliders to come to me and stay on me) This is what I show on my channel in many videos. If this is ultimately what you want to do with your gliders, you can try these other forms of bonding first BUT you may need to retrain the hobbit your gliders will develop of jumping off of you. This will mean a much longer time in a “safe room” training your gliders to stay on you before you venture into walking around the house with them.

@@sugargliderdiaries where did you get your tent I can not find one like it anywhere I would pay whatever to make sure my sugar babies are safe and to make sure that I could bond with him without him getting hurt lol all I can find are huge tents or super cheap ones.
@@sugargliderdiaries I live in NY state. Can I own a sugar glider? Where do I find them? There are only three pet stores in the area, and none of them have sugar gliders. I don't know if it's healthy to have them mailed.

This video has been very helpful. I’ve only had my one little buddy for about a month now and I was afraid that because I got him alone, he would be too scared (I couldn’t afford a sibling). But he’s been great and this video has helped so much! He likes to explore my room and climb the bookcase, but also sits on my back when I walk around the house. He doesn’t like the bonding pouch as much as my hoodie hood though and he’ll chill with me while I go out on errands, resting on my neck and back. Thanks to this video, I’ve gotten very close with him. Hopefully he’ll even let me hold him for more than a minute soon.

I feel like you gotta get him a sibling charles. Look for a sugar glider rescue or barring that craigslist. They need friends (except for a very small amount of weird ones lol) .

This is great! It's extremely rare for a sugar glider to instantly bond. Bruce and Todd are the only ones who never crabbed at me. The reason why they don't like your hand coming at them, especially from the top, is that it's very similar to a bird of prey. That's a good thing to keep in mind. :)

Yes. Let's strengthen our bond. Super helpful. We just got a glider. She was with another family before us, and I don't think they interacted with her very much. She is pretty skittish. We're just trying to take it slow and not scare her anymore than she already is.

Same here. I watched so many of this ladies videos before considering getting sugar gliders. I also googled a ton of info. But the info she provides is very helpful. After we found a vet in our area who was taking new clients and specializes in exotic creatures, we decided to adopt two from my boyfriends co worker. They’ve never seen a vet before so hopefully they’re healthy. We’ve already had them for about a month. They’re such great little fur balls. We love them so much and continue to fall in love more and more

Yes let’s strengthen our bond! Great information! It’s nice to re-listen to techniques and to try different bonding ideas. Some work sometimes and some techniques work other times. I noticed some techniques work with one of my boys more and other techniques work with the other more. Patience and commitment is definitely key for bonding. Thanks for your support and ideas!

I have researched sugar gliders for a few years now. I have a friend who had two and re homed them. I wasn’t ready yet or educated enough to take them in. We still had lots of research to do. Now my husband is on board and we decided to get everything in place first, cages, pouches
toys, bonding tent, the preferred diet in place and understood (BML),basic care Necessities. After we have all that in place and ready to go we will finally be ready. It’s a 10 to 15 year committed but one we are so excited about. Love this video !!

I made our room glider-safe, and they enjoyed jumping off of me and gliding here and there, but I was wondering if I can train them after that with your method or they would never stay on me now. The open or sideways sleeping pouch is a new idea I will try. I have one suggie that crabs when she is covered and can't see.

This is the second time I’ve watched this video and have been trying for months now to be able to get my little Binx to let me hold him, but I guess it’s just his personality. He loves bonding time, but he’s still very skiddish :/ I’ll keep trying though!

I really need to strengthen my bond with my little.girl. her cage mate died unexpectedly and she became so stressed when I tried introducing her to the other cage mates she began mutilating her tail. So I'm bonding with her, giving her meds 2x daily & she has surgery scheduled in 2 days. So I've had to skip a lot to get to giving meds but im really working hard so she is not stressed & bonds to me.
