  • Sails and other boat stuff needed to sail Seeker are underway. I hope you have enjoyed the recent glut of videos. We are 1200 miles from Tulsa to the Gulf of Mexico and it feels like a good start. Again, I'd like to thank you for all the congratulations. There were a lot of people that doubted, the welding, the engine, the transmission, the props, the ....well, just name anything, and there were naysayers. So ignore those who make mountains out of molehills. Find the people that have a glass-half-full approach to life; make them your crew, and you will go far. Merry Christmas. --Doug

It seems surreal to see you sitting on calm waters, at the "final harbour", working on your boat, after all these years. It's been an inspiring journey and I'm super thankful that you've shared it with us all this time.

Doug, I've been watching for years and I can't be happier for you. You are truly living the dream.... boat floats.... just take her down the river...anchor in the gulf and work out the sails and rigging.... may the sunsets only rival the sunrises.... may the wind only really blow at whatever angle a junk rigged ship sails best.... wish you only the best and thank you for sharing your journey with the rest of us. Truly an inspiration.

    Excellent work by all involved.
Seeing that old sailmakers palm makes me want to find mine.
I vas a parachute rigger in the Navy. I never sewed sails, but sometimes repaired heavy harness, sewing with nylon #6 cord and three inch needles. There was no way to get that monster needle through three or four layers of webbing without a palm.
    Great work everyone!

Zinc everything before paint, just experience from the bering sea lol that is two barrel knots... but a kerrick bend would have ben the better choice as the 2 knots he tied are large and make for more chafing. BUT... splicing is Ideal and if he can splice I do not know why you would give up 25% strength on the knot instead of a splice. Also those windows/portholes will break in weather I have seen Portholes desined for weather break in alaska... you need to change to windows with plexi 100% or you will be sorry... you can not always run from weather Chief engineer Alaska Crab fishing boats.

on the golfball, I was a kid who pulled things apart to see how they work. I cut open a golf ball got through the skin then all the rubber then cut in a bit deeper punctured the liquid center and it squirted out under massive pressure nearly lost an eye literally spent a week in hospital it still gives me grief 60 yrs later.
I am so amped to see this thing under sail my prediction is she will be fine and the motor will become redundant. But every boat needs redundancy.

For what it’s worth, I have 40 years experience in the building business. And I know you’re going do what you wanna do. That’s why I keep watching and liking your vids. But I wouldn’t use Alex Plus caulk around those windows unless it’s just the only thing I had. Probably would’ve used 4200 marine sealant or, if I had to source something from the big box building stores, I would use Lexel clear caulk. I quit using silicone caulk years ago because on every remodel job I did I would find it failing to adhere to anything but itself. Anyway. Maybe what you put on the windows will last long enough to prove me wrong but if it doesn’t just consider this a suggestion from another old pro.

Congrats on the saltwater. With regards to halyards, could you space out the hydraulic motor from the back of the winch to allow you to make the socket sliding so you can disconnect the hydraulic motor in case it fails and use the winch by hand? Also keep in mind that since your halyards are external to the mast, you could set up a relatively short horizontal block and tackle setup (20’) with Prussics to raise the sails.

    • @SVSeeker

Block and tackel for the sail waste of time. GET a gear reduction 5-10 to 1 hand driven winch. If you add block and tackel then you have to have LOTS of extra rope. If you have a proper winch then its just a matter of switching from the hydrolic driven winch to a manual gear reduction one. NO rigging changes. just changing which winch the halyard rope for lifting the sail(s) is going to. Also DONT forget to add a quick lock cleat.

By hand what is the safety margin for use and operation, hand lifted vs power/gear reduction manual. Better to prepair for worse case weather environment and total power failure. Then to try to lift or lower by human hand in bad seas is all I'm saying. To be honist I think You'll find it a pleasure to have a few winches manuals side by side for optional control. Re the winch, if it's too much load by hand are you risking overload by forcing it with hydraulics?
Even if it won't be overloaded, are you going to negatively impact its durability and reliability? I can't imagine a winch like that is cheap to replace or easy to source everywhere you intend to go.
It might be worth adding the sheave just to be kinder on the gear and make sure it keeps working for you long term.

We could, but there is a pressure relief valve built into the flow control valve. More on that later. Need to get it finished and working first.

Your running rigging is coming along really nicely :). Take a look at Hasler & McCloud if you have any questions, it works for me.

Water maker should be run offshore in clear ocean water. Never in harbors they will not take out all chemicals. Makes your expensive filters last longer.

Rus neutralizer, I bet you got it from HomeDepot, thanks for the info. I had been looking to get some, I am sure it's not difficult but looking at the brand I know HomeDepot has got some.
These ropes you have for the sail, they better be UV resistant because regular nylon and many more plastics just rot when exposed to UV. I sure you know that, so what brand a material are they?

Have you considered installing some diesel heater’s? They work well they’re very inexpensive and easy to install. I think you can get a 35000 btu unit for less than $200.

Can you lead your haliard through a block to the anchor windlass rope drum as a back up if your hydraulics fail?
