Waste of time them safari snorkels and OEM hoses, more for show then practicality. Done loads on the 90s I've had in the past and when you cover the top feed intake and create a vac you'll hear all the leaks where water can enter. I always go for the metal military style and weld a 90deg tube on the inside and run new pipe straight to the air box to prevent water being sucked into the OEM pipe joins. Great content as always and you've done the best you could in that situation mike.
Thanks. It came as a surprise to me that in the instructions it stated to seal up the dump valve with silicone! Also, the 'ram air' intake will force a lot of rain into the system, which is why I commented in it being face forwards. Still, it is only for looks - people still think they are for going underwater!
@@BritannicaRestorations Depends on the climate I suppose Mike, with you being over there it's probably not to dissimilar to the misery of the UK. I've always ran my snorkel tops reversed and never caused an issue as the turbos drawing anyways. As long as the customer likes it hey 👌👌
Yeah I hope people don't just bolt these inlets on and assume they can go wading - on my TD5 I got a raised air intake but made sure to test and seal up all the dump valves in the system - and most importantly like you say put your hand over the intake when it's done to check for leaks and make sure it stalls, bet a lot of people don't actually test them before going wading
yea, I definitely don't plan on wading, my main concern was how much water i was seeing splash up against the side of the fenders when i was going through 6-8" deep puddles in heavy rain (we got a lot of that this summer!), was worried a lot could get sucked in with the intake right there, also figured getting the intake higher wouldn't hurt from a dust perspective since she will see a lot of dirt roads. Also... who am I kidding.. i think it looks cool!
Indeed! No problems since = just goes to show you need to talk to the barrel organist not the monkey! They put 2 x 10 wheeler trucks of large rock to block the culvert and scooped out all the crap in the gullies from top to bottom of the road - job well done!
The Ozzie's drive on the right side of the car. They do sometimes drive on the right of the road (see dashcams Australia!) but not for long! The standard fit for that part is a pain...I would not fancy doing a left hand drive defender. J
My Suzuki GSXR 750 so say made 128 bhp with forward facing ram air box tunnels apparently , but it didn't have four wheel drive only one ! Maybe it became a water injection system at speed , but I never had time to inspect for white exhaust fumes when driving in rain , or no rain to be honest ! Lol , Land Rover obviously lost a chance for a performance enhancement here . Maybe facing the inlet backwards would cause too rich a mixture , being serious ? At least the air temperature delivered to the motor would be cooler than an an engine compartment air take could supply in dessert temperatures .
Hi Mike. Im not sure if that snorkel is just for cosmetics or actually wading? But i sealed up the dump valve T piece, and also got rid of the duck bill valve on the air cleaner and fitted a cap sealed up. With a good O ring on the air cleaner cover it used to stall the engine when suffocated to check it was air tight.
I think when the intake points fwd , it kind of "ram" cool air in? Much better than all those down south who place a K+N filter inside the engine compartment...
I dont see why there is a problem. The wing and firewall is the same shape no matter what side the heater box is on. So the snorkel should go on all the same. And the pipe shouldn't be in the way any more than the original pipe was
When you said "bugger"... I couldn't stop thinking of Unlucky Alf 😂
Good workaround Mike. I like things like that when I manage to work stuff out and get a successful result. Satisfying.
Thanks 👍
Really nice work Mike 👍
Thanks 👍

The amount of rain we have had recently this is a well timed video mike
Had 3 days of rain here - think I may go into making boats
@@BritannicaRestorations Are the rain drains/gullies working now they did that work up the road?

the amount of rain we've had recently was the catalyst for me adding this to Mike's list! (thanks Mike!)
You still need a Land Rover to tow it though.@@BritannicaRestorations

Yes-Right hand drive - left-hand side of the road!
It was a royal pain in the arse to fit on a LHD!

Also rams rain in - not a good idea where we are
2:05 No we don't, we rive on the left, Mike, like you used to do in Yorkshire 😆. But we have our steering wheel on the RIGHT side of the car.
Yes I forgot to put in the correction
Does it not run the engine more lean having the air intake that way?
No idea
Same as a 200Tdi, air intake is on the left under the heater.
Yes but this is for a 300Tdi intake on the opposite side
That was a nice bit of engineering you did. I’m still wondering why he didn’t get the right part though.
They are all this style - on LR Direct website it states some modifications needed for LHD (or words to that effect)
@@BritannicaRestorationsoh. You would think they would offer a kit.
I don't think they care...
@@BritannicaRestorationsthey most certainly don’t

I do - but this is not my vehicle

This is a LHD - the heater is handed and will not allow the hose to pass - it says on LR Directs website - some trimming may be required
Reverse the snorkel head Mike. Better fuel figures. Less water in, and bugs. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Indeed!
