If you think about it, the original droid factory is probably the first “expanded universe“ product. It was never seen on camera. The 2nd “expanded universe” product was, of course, the imperial trip transport, which I loved more than anything when I was 14 years old.
Really fantastic stuff. I like that cardboard AT-AT. It has so much character, and is a good reminder that Kenner were aiming for all budgets with their Star Wars range.
Kenner definitely made something for everyone back in the day. Mini-rigs were created specifically to cater to kids whose parents wouldn't pony up and buy the big ticket items. Had to extend the line however possible.
I got to enjoy one extra ESB "playset" as a kid. My main Star Wars friend and I both had the Millennium Falcon but, because his was more beat up and missing pieces (he was a year younger) we would take his Falcon and jam it between the trunks of a low-split birch tree in his front yard. It actually made for a fairly serviceable Cloud City as he had also taken out all the cardboard paneling on the inside so there was more (albeit hard to access) space. I have great memories of various scenarios we came up with where Luke actually saved everyone, or Han, Chewie and Leia manage to fight their way out of the carbon freeze chamber. Great video! Thank you for the big trip down nostalgia lane!
Sounds to me like you made the most of a good thing back in those days! I love to hear it. Imagination was everything when we were kids. If you didn't have it, you imagined it. Period. I have to say I think your coolest play set is Cloud City! Came with 4 figs and we didn’t have any other things to support other than the Cloud Car. Really cool with all your figs around it and that carbon chamber too. Love all the details on the backing too!
This was seriously awesome. I had just about all of the SW/TMP figures, ships, and playsets from 1977 - 1982. Loved my 3-legged R2 from the droid factory lol.
Great tour and an awesome stroll down memory lane!!!! I had MOST of those Playsets as a kid except the cardboard MOs Eisley and Bespin and the Jaba Dungon and the Ewok Village.... I had and enjoyed and played the heck out of all the rest of them!!!!! Great stuff as always..... keep up the great work!!!!
Happy you enjoyed the tour! There are several tour videos on my channel. There’s even a playlist dedicated to them. I think you’ll enjoy them if you enjoyed this one. Check em out!
I had that Imperial Attack Base as a kid. The cool thing about it to me was that even though it was weirdly named, I never even thought about that. You just played with it and filled full of figures and blew things up. So much fun to make that ice bridge collapse.
Had to re-watch this video. Looking to get into some of the vintage playsets. Gonna look for an ewok village for sure. And while I was watching , I just got a new Stan Solo delivery ! Today is a good day !
Repeat viewings are always fun! Glad you could get inspired. Good luck with your quest for more Kenner! And it's always a good day for Stan Solo figures!
Really glad you dug it! If you like these tour videos, make sure you check out the Tour Playlist. Tons of collection tour style videos in there. More to come in the future!
Thanks man! I’ve given separate tours of each cabinet, each movie. I’ve got a lot cabinets. Had to split up the tour. Would be wayyy over an hour. Lol. All those videos are also in the “Playset” playlist. That will really give you an idea of my collection. Been adding custom figures to it all so the collection has grown since I shot those.
Thanks for doing this video. "I've been looking forward to this." :) This video came at the right time. Ironically, I've been thinking a lot about the Droid Factory/Jabba's Torture Dungeon and the Jabba playset here lately. I at least want the bases (all 3) for now, I think they would be perfect for figure display standing up on their backside and serve as a backdrop. I have everything for Jabba but the dais and the armrest. On the Hoth Turret playset, the Imp. probe is absolutely a figure. I think if they sold it by itself it would definitely sell well as a figure. :) That Land of the Jawas sandcrawler, all those backdrops are in absolutely great condition. I can't get over how nice those look. :) Thanks for the tour Thanks for the video :)
The probe droid would have sold separately. No question. It's definitely a figure. I agree. Best of luck collecting what you need. Really glad that you enjoyed the tour. I thought folks might want to see what the whole line of playsets looked like. There are quite a few peppered throughout the Kenner line. Cheers!
Very enjoyable episode. You've got it all. When I was a kid I don't remember any of my friends having playsets they had some vehicles. With that Dagobah playset I could see a little rubber snake coming out of the front of Yoda's Hut. Great work once again. I hope none of those La gang members come in your apartment and destroy your stuff that would suck
The Droid Factory R2-D2 had the reverse graphics on the sticker. There are plenty of repro stickers out there. I have no issues with repros except passing them off as originals when selling. Vintage is the best and Stan Solo and others who make vintage style items are awesome.
Currently sat in the children’s A+E with daughter (possible broken finger) she’s playing Roblox on her tablet and this gem of a vid just popped up to ease my boredom, cheers GQ from merry England
The Land of the Jawas is probably my favorite "A New Hope" playset even more than the Death Star. The Sears Cloud City is my very favorite playset because of how it displays. Among vehicles, the Millennium Falcon and followed by the Imperial Troop Transport. The Sears Cantina Adventure Set may be my next favorite playset....hard to say what is the best of the best, vintage is all good.
Thanks for another great video! I personally loved the star destroyer. I didn’t have the death star as a kid so it was home base for my imperials, ewok village was home base for my rebels and Jabba was bounty Hunter central!
The imperial attack base should perhaps be called 'the Hoth rebel bastion'. Note: Bastions are a standard motif among playsets for boys ( ex: Playmobil 70413, 4014, or 4217 ) - a lower price-point step to a full-fledged fort or castle. ...I remember having it as a tween ( still do ), and loved it! Great design, indeed.
Do you have the Palitoy cardboard Death Star, large but nice. I have some of these playsets, the new Stan solo Vader will sit well in Darths chamber on the star destroyer.
Great review on all the Kenner play sets. Are you aware of a site that sells repro cardboard for these play sets? Sorry if you have touched upon that already.
Very nice! You have it all! Just curious, where did you get the black uniformed Death Squad Commander? I tried to get some custom off eBay, but the seller never shipped them. Did you paint them yourself? That's what I had to end up doing.
Thank you! Kenner Star Wars is my obsession. LOL. I actually got that DSC from @KeepersKustoms on Instagram. Look him up. That's the only place you can contact him if you are interested. I'm actually gearing up to release a video about his work this weekend.
Excellent review 👏 kenner playsets simple but effective . You must do a review of the mini rigs . I recently picked up an isp 6 it's easily my favourite also another suggestion some kenner box art has major variations you might look at for example, Sonic controlled land speeder both ben are luke have DT sabers on the graphics I think you would be good reviewing these variations . Cheers
Thank you! I tend to only review items that I have in my collection. Simply posting photos that I got online, I find to be cheating. It’s just not my style. I prefer to show in hand, what I’m speaking about. There are many boxes that I do not have. Ironically I do have both speeder boxes though. I love the Kenner box art! There’s a certain charm to them. If I had a huge collection of boxes, I might venture down that review road. But a video on the mini-rigs is something that I’ve had on my list for a long time. I have all the rigs, I just need to make the video.
I would like to see a documentary about the artist that designed all of the figures and play sets. I want to know how they went about designing all of them.
Finally got the last of the playsets a few weeks ago. It was the '84 Jabba Dungeon - finally found one for sale cheap without the figures (I already had the figures). I had the '83 one since I was a kid - that I bought with my own money!. OK, technically I bought the '84 one with my own money too, but that's adult money. It's been a ride this past year filling in the gaps: 3 Ewok villages, 2 more (partial) Death Stars (already had 3- but only one complete of the lot), Cloud City, Cantina Adventure, another Dagobah and the rest of them I had since childhood or at least very early adulthood. Still a few more gaps to flesh out the run, but at least the playset side is complete! So is the Rebel Transport a vehicle, a playset or a carry case? Or is it all of those things at once? 😜
Cool to rebuild or start a collection. Stoked for you! I would consider the Transport a ship and a carrying case. But throwing it into a playset is like throwing the Falcon in the playset arena. The beauty is there are no rules. I just go by Kenner's classification when making certain "lists".
I was thinking about some toys that I used to play with back when I was a kid, it was called mobile action, command by matchbox, and they had these generic looking soldier figures but with really awesome vehicles. Amazingly there appear to be no videos on UA-cam, about mobile action command, if you know any vintage toy UA-camr, who knows the series, you might tell them to do a video About it.
To be honest with you, I don't really "know" any other UA-camrs. I kind of just do my own thing. Sorry I can't assist in your quest for more content on that subject.
The likely reason why we only got the Sears Cloud City cardboard playset was because Kenner was planning the Micro Collection Cloud City three part set.
I did not include that because technically that was made by Palitoy. I was just covering Kenner issued products. Palitoy is Kenner’s sister company. I also do not have that particular DS so i wouldn’t be able to show you guys anything besides a photo.
I had a lot Star Wars toys..figs..sets…ships.. I sold the lot 10 years ago..give or take… for Christmas money.. for the kids.. I wish I never sold them..feels like a piece of me is missing.. I only received stars wars for bdays and Christmas.. Except one figure..my mom gave randomly..one weekday evening..pulling it from behind her back..revealing an Ewok..wicket.. Remember feeling disappointed..because it would have been cool to have another stormtrooper.. but I was appreciative in my response to my mom in the moment.. Anyways.. the only figure I kept was …the Ewok… Maybe to much info😂 May the force be with..everyone..always😊
A lot of folks sold off their collections for one reason or another. I've toyed with the idea myself at times for certain reasons. But I know deep down I would most likely regret the decision. As always, I appreciate your support. Hope you have a Happy Holiday, Ken.
@@GQJedi I believe it was on Netflix.. A show called.. The toys we grew up on.. Talked about collecting… Some collect for sake of collecting…some to make some money.. Others it’s part of their..soul.. My collection was part of my soul..a little dramatic 😂.. But I do miss them… I wouldn’t sell..if I could do over…
What’s your question? This was a tour of all the playsets. If you’re asking where are the vehicles, that’s another video that will pop up in the future.
The Falcon...is kind of both really. I almost included it in this tour but since Kenner labeled it as a ship and not a playset, I opted to exclude it from this particular list.
When I was a kid I always wanted to death star playset unfortunately my mom was a single parent and on welfare The only person who got me something really cool was my grandmother at Christmas time bought me the millennium falcon My mom could buy me X-Wing and a Thai fighter but unfortunately I could never get the death Star playset or any other place set for that matter or he had at Walker my mom was very limited on how much money she could spend and when I got old enough to where I had a job I tried to convince the company to bring back the death Star playset and they would not do it I called Kenner or Hasbro power of the force when they brought back the action figures and stuff and the toys they absolutely refuse to bring back the death Star playset or any other place at from that era to this very day I still have not been able to get the death Star playset
that land of the Jawas cardboard is so clean. i curse Sears for raising the clothes and tool prices. we didnt get to shop their toy aisles for those reasons! cantina resembles 2 year college house parties. ill let whoever read in to that however they like. Droid Factory is such a mystery for me. missed out somehow. i wish hasbro would just release a buch of thin plastic walls for 3 3/4" star wars. theyd get my dollars. the death star playset seems crowded but each level or room gets some great details! that probe bot and turret playset is a bit tight but i love it! so much depth on the card art back drop for echo base. its so odd they went cardboard again for empire but not on the two big hoth playsets. imperial attack base ice sculpts! so simple. so cool!!! i love awkward cardboard walker. a charming little chipboard doggie indeed. army of yodas on dagobah, you have. A-shirt Luke would be a great "retro" line figure. come on Hasbro! wake up! vader's star destroyer...ehhh. neat features but no room for hands and figures. that cloud city dropback...oooòh. ohhhhĥ. i always wondered where CAP-2 would fit. nice choice. Jabba needed a cardboard backdrop! we had the tan dungeon. kinda dull. ewoks playset got drug everywhere outside that we could carry it. thank you for the tour and allowing my lengthy comment. i am not expecting a response on this lengthy thing. thank you again.
Lots of cool things featured in this tour video. There is no denying it. Some stuff is more loved than others, that's for sure. I think there's something for everyone. The cardboard pieces have their charm. I agree, I do wish Jabba got something more for his "playset" than just his dais/couch. Such as it is, Jabba is still one of my favorites. Period. Glad you got a chance to take a trip down memory lane ;)

That’s a great way of looking at it. I for one, I’m happy that Kenner had a creative vision and utilized it to great effect.
the only good thing about that set was r2s third leg, sure u had to cut it down but it sat in the kenner figurer nicely with a little bllue tac..
The Imperial Attack Base and Ewok Village were freaking awesome. I played with those as a kid more than anything. Unlimited possibilities.
That’s what Kenner delivered in spades. Unlimited possibilities.

I'd forgotten (actually never thought about it until now) that Kenner made so many SW playsets.
Yes. Kenner made quite a few. However, I wish ROTJ had gotten a few more. It's really lacking on playsets compared to Star Wars & Empire.

I believe it was on Netflix..
A show called..
The toys we grew up on..
Talked about collecting…
Some collect for sake of collecting…some to make some money..
Others it’s part of their..soul..
My collection was part of my soul..a little dramatic 😂..
But I do miss them…
I wouldn’t sell..if I could do over…
@@kenmiller2230 I know the show you're talking about. Great episode. Loved it. I hear ya, pal. I hear ya.
On the not Imperial Attack Base, the control room has these two little spikey squares that set oddly atop... Terrible things to step on barefoot!!
LOL. No doubt.
dude you look like Josh Hartnett I might be spelling his last name wrong, but you look like him wow.
They say everyone in the world has a twin. Maybe he's mine. Cheers!
Oooooteenee!!
Haha!
Vehicles??
What’s your question? This was a tour of all the playsets. If you’re asking where are the vehicles, that’s another video that will pop up in the future.
I’m in the middle of cleaning all the “sand” off of my displays…
Haha! It’s really does get everywhere.
.@GQJedi It REALLY does....
A bang up job means a bad job.
Try googling “bang up job” and see what pulls up. You’re confusing that saying with something else.
Do you consider the millennium Falcon a playset for a ship?
The Death Star is an amazing playset. I hope you can get your hands on one someday. MTFBWY!
that land of the Jawas cardboard is so clean. i curse Sears for raising the clothes and tool prices. we didnt get to shop their toy aisles for those reasons! cantina resembles 2 year college house parties. ill let whoever read in to that however they like.
