Sekiro is my fave since it feels compact, yet complex like cuphead. The bosses make you use all your tools rather than the game giving you too many like in ER and the game being too easy and not encouraging any other playstyle like in DS3.
Speaking of DS3, it's kinda boring, like switch my brain off and spam roll, which shouldn't be the case for a soulslike.
It's not bad by any means just boring on repeat play throughs.
Eh I think best soulslikes are cuphead, Sekiro and I wanna try hollow knight so bad.

I’d have to say Sekiro is my personal favorite no other souls game has ever given me the extreme sense of accomplishment that sekiro did when I beat a really hard boss. In dark souls or Elden ring every time I beat a boss I just felt like I either got lucky with boss rng or I lucked out with my dodges. Sekiro for the most part actually forces the player to actually learn a boss, not spam roll and hit it every now and then.

I experienced DS1 for the first time recently after having played 4 of the Fromsoft games, and everything you said here applies so well. The world design is absolutely incredible. Riding an elevator back to firelink shrine was the most relieving feeling, and it’s shocking how well the game has aged. It’s a timeless classic really. The combat is a bit sluggish especially compared to the older games, and the 2nd half clearly has a steep drop off in quality (although it’s still decent), DLC ups the combat intensity and lays the groundwork for what later games would look like. I also think the NPCs are more interesting and likable than later games.
The one thing that did surprise me was how much of the difficulty was in basic traversal. You’d die in the levels about 20-30 times, then beat the boss in 4-5 tries. It’s the opposite of later games where you’d cruise through the levels if you know what you’re doing, then die to the boss 50 times. I almost kinda prefer this way, where you’re constantly chipping away to progress through the level, rather than just dying to the same enemy over and over again, respawning outside of the arena, and trying again.

I’m a completionist who does every area, every boss, and every side dungeon in every souls game. I’m just a chronic loot goblin, and that makes me want to play the story chalice dungeons in BB, and it’s a mistake every single time because they have the worst stretch of content in the series. The final chalice literally recycles the same exact side floor two floors in a row for some reason.
I’ve also come to learn that BB balance is screwed by the dungeons, because the power difference is massive between doing and not doing them, the devs expected you to do some dungeoning, but most players don’t. But if you complete the story dungeons through to completion, then you are generally a little too powerful. I wish From Soft just didn’t make them and put more into the straightforward adventure.

another "complaint" i would have about BB which was something i really felt my first playtrough is that a big chunk of the game really looks and feels the same if it comes to aesthetics. it feels like 80% of the game takes place in the same erea (even tho i know its not). i would actually say its kind of the same way sekiro's ereas also feel the same way a lot.
I remember getting outside the city and later into the dlc (esp fishing hamlet) felt so refreshing because i got a brake from being into yharnam all the time.

I couldn't agree more. This was a big part of why I bounced of BB on my first playthrough. By the time I got to Mergo's Loft, I was desperate for an area that didn't look like the same as all the other areas. BB's aesthetic is very effective when you first arrive in Central Yharnam, but then the entire rest of the game looks like that, and it just becomes tedious. It's like if all of Elden Ring's field areas looked like Mt. Gelmir.
I think a big part part of it is how muted BB's color pallete is. It's 95% black and dark grey, with bits of sickly yellow and dark red poking through. There's more vibrancy in Liurnia than there is in the entirety of BB.

The 4 main areas of Yarnham, being Central Yarnham, Old Yarnham, Cathedral Ward and Yaharguul, all substantially stand out in their own way imo even tho theyre all in the same city.
No city fromsoft has created comes close to Yarnham in feeling like an actual city (except maybe Lyndell)…. Anor Londo, Irythill, Ringed City, Lyndell, Farum Azula, Ashina area etc all feel like single level “cities” that are not as fleshed out or detailed.
Finally, the dark greyish colors are crucial to portray the horror and themes of the game. Kinda how it’s done in DS3 (e.g. Irythill’s colors), it allows for certain vibrant colors to really stand out in a very artistic way (e.g. all the blood & bloodweapons, arcane weapons, the sky and the moon, nightmare areas, kin/great ones enemies, fire/bolt beasts, etc)

    • @bjeurn2273
      @bjeurn2273 3 місяці тому

@@ah_helou2845 oooh i really agree what you are saying don't get me wrong. no other fromsoft city stands out as much as yarnham's 4 main ereas. i even like yaharguul way more than the general BB enjoyer (esp the part when the kidnapper takes you there early).
But still it feels like 1 ultra massive (very good peak fromsoft) level for most of the game which made me crave to some other settings when getting later into the game.
because i already was so used to the aestetic, it made me apreciate the city levels less at the time.
I actually wouldn't change the city at all (because its obviously S-tier), but maybe add another erea that's totally different like the fishing hamlet or hemwick charnel lane. (maybe another route going from old yharnam? im just thinking lol)

I guess treating it like a dungeon crawler and exploring every nook and cranny but also the atmosphere, aesthetic (especially the Isz chalice), some unique bosses and enemies that aren't in the base game, an actual story leading to a final boss, and TOO many other details and tid bits to list. But I do agree with your stance on depth 4 chalices, I thought cutting your hp in half was a slightly cool way to up the difficulty despite how artificial it is but the boss selection and hp make it extremely ass. do not ask why I went this hard on chalice dungeons on a ranking video

Quality over Quantity great art style the BEST sound track hands down. Great lore and it knew the balance between difficulty and fun. I find it really concerning seeing discourse from players going from Elden Ring to other souls titles comparing difficulty and IF they say Elden Ring is harder than older titles they conflate difficulty with a boss being good or not. They'll say they played Dark Souls or Bloodborne even Sekiro and didn't find bosses as HARD as bosses in Elden Ring and therefore... the bosses are... bad? I mean, I just don’t find the base game boss roster of Bloodborne to be anywhere near as fun to fight as Elden Ring, Sekiro, or even Dark Souls 3. It’s not because I think the bosses are too easy. I just don’t find them fun.
There are so many bosses in base game Bloodborne that I would consider unacceptably bad. One Reborn, Witches of Hemwick, Rom the Vacuous Spider, and (especially) Micolash are all terrible bosses. Micolash in particular might be my pick for the worst boss FromSoft has ever designed.
I understand why people can overlook this and still have Bloodborne as their favourite since you can make the argument that the Art Direction, weapons, and DLC bosses of Bloodborne are good enough to make up for the lackluster boss roster of the base game.
But as someone who considers boss fights to be the best part of any Soulsborne game, I find doing fresh playthroughs of Bloodborne to be quite tedious due to the amount of medicore and straight up bad bosses I have to get through in order to get to the really good bosses in the late game.

i personally think ds3 has a really nice set of areas. They feel short and sweet to me but have great exploration and enemy variety and i always have fun going through them. And for me the linearity is a massive positive making the game a lot more fun to go through on your first playthrough. When i played ds1, 2 and bloodborne for the first time i was constantly looking up where to go next because it's just so unclear but ds3 feels fast paced and like you're always progressing. Feel's almost like a final march to the end of the world. It's also got my favourite setting of the souls games, i love the apocalyptic setting showing the stagnation of the world. Dreg heap and slave knight gael's arena are some of the coolest locations I've seen in a game. The mostt underrated souls game in my opinion and my favourite game of all time.

Then when I realized there was no fast travel I was left with a choice. Restart, or push forward. I chose to keep on pushing forward.
It made the rest of the game so I beat almost every other boss my first try. My build was strength. I believe sword and Shield. Still, it's so funny to think about how my first playthrough went because of that small decision I made in the beginning.

Also think Old Hunters gives just enough great bosses, atmosphere/lore/enemy design are all peak, and it deserves either #1 or #2 spot imo. - Dark Souls has a world design that’s still unmatched. While it may not have better combat or bosses than most of From Soft’s games, I still believe it has more memorable moments and atmosphere.
    - Sekiro has the most satisfying combat in any game and the best difficulty curve in the series.
    - Bloodborne has incredible level design, but Old Hunters carries the game when it comes to its boss line up. The base game’s boss roster wasn’t great.

The only consensus among souls fans is that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2 are at the bottom. The other 5 games are absolute masterpieces and can be placed in any order depending who you ask. Imo, Elden Ring is actually the worst of the 5, so the ranking AS INDIVIDUAL GAMES would go something like this:
    7- Dark Souls 2
    6- Demon's Souls
    5- Elden Ring
    4- Dark Souls 3
    3- Bloodborne
    2- Dark Souls 1
    1- Sekiro
(These last 3 are interchangeable really and another day I could give you a different order lol)
However, the total is more than the sum of it's parts and I like to think of the Dark Souls trilogy as one thing, not 3 separate games. Viewed this way it is definitely number 1:
    5- Demon's Souls
    4- Elden Ring
    3- Bloodborne
    2- Sekiro
    1- Dark Souls trilogy

Despite how much I do love Elden Ring, I kind of have some personal gripes with what it did. Because it became so popular among non souls players, all of a sudden people who try to suggest playing solo for a better and harder experience were being shunned with the whole "let me play the game my way" when a lot of them were being pretty friendly. I also really hate spirit summons, but for a different reason then most. When you summon someone, this is a real human your interacting with. You don't know how good they are, you don't know what they want, and you get that jolly sense of cooperation. But with spirit summons, every single time it's the exact same AI, it's just so boring and removes the original feeling. And my last thing might seem like a stupid complaint, but remember how it used to be the "Dark Souls Roll", or like the memes about stuff in all souls games in general, like "when you find a weird bloodstain in dark souls" etc. Well now it's the "Elden Ring Roll" and "When you find a weird bloodstain in Elden Ring". It seems stupid but it really pisses me off.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I want more elden ring-esque games. I grew up on Zelda as my Action-Adventure game of choice, as well as playing dungeons and dragons. I didn't get into demon's souls when it came out since i didn't own a playstation, never have (also RIP to ever playing bloodborne until a PC port). I missed dark souls's release because it was when i graduated hs, went to college, and mostly stopped playing games for somewhere around 5 years.
Around 2019 I got dark souls remastered on switch and ngl rage quit at the first demon because i didn't realize you weren't suppose to fight it with the broken sword and run by. Told myself i'll try it again one day cuz i was playing blind, didn't for years.
Flashforward to 2022, i played elden ring with a friend and fell in love. Couldn't play for another 2 years until this last may and i put 300 hours in in a month and a half. I've down gone through and finished dark souls 1, 3, sekiro, and just bought dark souls 2 and am dreading it after my first hour feeling more like fable. I've also been trying other souls-like/AARPG games like lies of p, hollow knight and blasphemous (which i know ppl argue back and forth over their definition within the subgenre), outward, darksiders, kingdom hearts, monster hunter rise and world, breath of the wild (but not totk), and more.
My point in all this, is I love elden ring's approach more than any of these other games. Why? Because of the mystery and large scope, the open world, and the worldbuilding itself. It feels like Magic: the gathering or D&D brought to life; like a dream fantasy game. It feels like Ocarina of Time for adults. I'll always have Volcano Manor burned into my head and how much it feel like a fully fleshed out Death Mountain. The cutscene with tje lava bridge raising is one of my favs despite its simplicity. I do hope they make more games like Elden Ring, but I imagine the next few games will be more akin to sekiro, bloodborne, and ds3: mostly linear with some side areas.
Of the fromsoft games I've played that are not bound to sony's asinine rules, my favs in order are:
Elden Ring > DS1 > Sekiro > DS3 > DS2. Might be controversial to put sekiro below DS1 but i only wish it weren't as linear as it is. It felt like I was running through hallways rather than a world. DS1 and Elden Ring capture worldbuilding in the way I like, harkening to worlds like Termina and Hyrule.

    DS2 is mid.
But it actually has DLC and the DLCs (minus the horribly designed multiplayer areas) are some of my favorites areas of any FS games. I'd put all 3 in my top 10 areas of the series and I think only Earthen Peak is in any sort of contention for a spot in the main game. (Forest of Giants is intricately designed but I have a hard time giving credit to areas before you would normally have your build at least sort of differentiated)
I only played the PS3 version though- which is base game + DLCs- apparently the best overall experience.
I still think the biggest shame is that they spend so much effort on SotFS and apparently broke more stuff than they fixed. If they could have just focused in on the problems it'd probably end up better than at least DS1 (as that game also has its fair share of problems after O+S)
I have no problem putting it far ahead of Demon Souls. Latria is great. Parts of Boletaria are good. Respect for going all in on the shitty swamp area. It wins a bit on atmosphere but it's just so jank compared to the later games. It's also super short. DS2 is bloated, but Demon Souls just feels like it's over in an instant. And no DLC either. If it wasn't the progenitor t'd surely have what amounts to 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4 and 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 as DLC.

It is a jack of all trades game. It does everything competently but doesn't excel at anything imo. For some that's a big positive but for me it just means it doesn't really stand out for anything.
I play souls games most for the combat, atmosphere and exploration DS3 has been surpassed combat wise by both Sekiro and ER and it's levels and world are pretty lackluster.
Anyway, I REALLY like all these games DS3 is still like a 9/10 game imo. It's just a bit lower for me personally.

Don't expect a BB2 or a BB remake as much as you and I would like. Sony is a business that knows a BB remake or 2 is risky and may not make them money. No BB patch for ps5 but don't worry though we got the Last of Us 1 and 2 remakes, oh Death Stranding 2 is coming soon as well awesome.

    1. Ds1 (coolest interconnected world and lore also the first one I played) 2. Elden ring (best build and enemy variety and ost visuals variety in general) 3. Bloodbourne (fun combat and cool world but base game bosses are lacking) 4. Sekiro (most consistent game combat wise but enemy and build variety is seriously lacking) 5. Demons souls (atmosphere is so good I like how you can choose between 5 worlds at once also shortcuts and world design make the most sense out of any of the games) 6. Ds3 (after replaying the game multiple times the first half is a slog and I have no attachment to the areas they are all pretty grey and bland and imo is carried by boss fights good ost tho) 7. Ds2 (a lot of cool ideas but so many flaws and 90% of bosses are mid, dlc was a lot of fun)

    My favorites:
    7: Sekiro
    6: Demon's Souls
    5: DS3
    4: DS1
    3: Elden Ring
    2: Bloodborne
    1: Dark Souls 2
Played and beat Sekiro, but didn't really care for it, combat was very tedious to me. The Stealth and Jumping were nice.
Demon's Souls was nice, but having to juggle World Tendency and playing at 50% life to do so was annoying.
DS3 felt a downgrade in many areas, but its boss fights was an overall upgrade. Still a horrible glitch-fest though.
DS1 good beginning but weaker 2nd half. The interworld connectivity and its grandeur was very welcoming.
Elden Ring did a good job combining mechanics from previous games but it missed some really good ones. The poor balancing and unrefined multiplayer hurts it though.
Bloodborne is near perfect outside of some quality of life choices, such as the Lanterns.
DS2 was the most enjoyable game for me. It has the best Caster system in the series, plus the Balance and Multiplayer was solid. Its NG+ mechanics are unmatched.
Note that these are ranked in experience of fun and replayability for myself.

Agreed. Bloodborne has a really weak set of bosses in the base game. I only really liked Gascoigne, Cleric Beast and Gehrman the others were just alright or not good. There was a surprisingly large amount of gimmick fights that just weren't fun or underwhelming. That being said, the combat in Bloodborne is really smooth and I love what they did with the trick weapons. The atmosphere, level design and Lovecraftian aspects of the game is also top notch. Music is also only rivalled by Dark Souls 3

  • @carlschrappen9712

    1. Elden Ring. Best combat system, best bosses, and the best build variety. I really like how much freedom the open world gives you, in spite of its flaws. The new quality of life features such as the shortcut menu and the recent tab are fantastic.
    2. Dark Souls 3. Mostly good bosses and good levels, and I love how smooth and fast the combat system is. Unfortunately, the build variety could be better, it's very linear, and it represents FromSoftware at their most creatively bankrupt with how much nostalgia pandering there is.
    3. DS1. The interconnected world is really cool, and the slower paced combat has its merits with how deliberate it is. Unfortunately, the base game falls off really hard after O&S and most of the bosses and enemies are rather simplistic. The game also lacks a lot of quality of life features that would get introduced in later games, such as omni-directional rolling when locked on.
    4. DS2. I think it’s a little underrated, I think most of the game’s level and boss design isn’t that bad. However, the base game has very few of either that I would call great. It’s also by far the slowest paced game in the series, with stamina and attacks taking longer to recover than every other entry. This combined with some occasionally frustrating boss and enemy design put it relatively low on the list.
    5. DeS. DeS best attributes are its world and level design. The world design is very underrated, it’s second only to ER in how much freedom it gives the player to tackle challenges in whatever order they please. The level design is great, featuring levels that are to this day some of the best and most challenging in the series.
Unfortunately, most other things about DeS fail to hold up to the other games in the series. The combat system is at its most unpolished, the build variety is lacking (There’s only one offensive miracle), and it generally lacks a lot of polish that got added over time. The gimmick bosses just aren’t engaging, and the conventional bosses are either very jank or very basic.
I haven’t beaten Bloodborne, and I don’t consider Sekiro a soulslike, so that'll be the end of my list.

@@DreyfusLagooncompletely agree on your point, in fact, i like dark souls 1 not as a game, but as a work of art where the limitations of transport, the ambiance and the themes of holding to the fire in life and the concept of going hollow give an experience that has been unmatched by any other game i’ve played and I have gotten all the achievements in 3 different playthroughs with a couple of NG+. That being said, the game is kinda janky as fuck with varying levels of quality in bosses and area design so I prefer many other aspects of sekiro (8 NG+ and a no hit on all bosses excluding some boring ones), BB (5 runs and a NG+) and ER (10 runs and 8 NG+)

@@AlphaOmega-jh6ll fair enough, there is an important distinction to note when it comes to long term on the game because yeah I find zero reason to ever go back and replay that game. Beat it twice, got both endings, and left very satisfied. That being said, there’s hardly any build variety, the bosses don’t hold up to the modern day games, the game is actually pretty short once you know the game, and overall there’s less variance per playthrough on that game when compared to something like elden ring. But as I said no game has ever left me with the same feeling that game did. When it comes to my favorite game to replay it’s probably ds3. Because of the game being so linear I find it really satisfying to boss rush a playthrough sort of like a speed run but obviously not super competitively. The boss fights are just too good. Elden ring has equally as awesome boss fights but my main issue with that games bosses is that boss rushing it is extremely long and also extremely boring when you aren’t actually fighting the bosses. There’s just too much dead space in elden ring during repeat playthroughs that make it a total slog. Admittedly I’ve only played bloodborne twice, never played it until 2 years ago and the 30fps is just not it for me in 2024

I hope they make more games like Sekiro. A more condensed and curated experience with immensely satisfying combat. Elden Ring is just too large and ambitious, replaying it is very boring to me because it is just horse riding simulator. Sekiro you can get straight in to the combat and have a good time. I'd like to have something in between that's like Sekiro but with a little more content and gameplay variety, something like Lies of P maybe which is an amazing game.
Elden Ring is a great game that i've sunk a lot of hours into but I hope they do not make any more open world games on this scale again. So much was sacrificed in making a game this large which I really felt in the DLC, I felt it was a bit undercooked and disappointing in parts. Also the Souls combat formula is starting to show its age. I'm hoping for something different next.
