They were pretty big in the US, dude. They just kept fucking up their momentum and tours everytime they came through. They had excellent radioplay and their music videos were all over MTV. Unfortunately, Oasis was their own worst enemy.
They weren’t “that big” in the US. They were competing with bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Green Day, Metallica. Go to the 1998 charts in America and you’ll find them nowhere. Even Noel Gallagher acknowledged they weren’t as big in America.
Noel's face at the airport when Liam bailed on the US tour. I'll never forget how upset he looked. That US tour was a sellout in large venues. Liam totally fucked up America all to piss off Noel.
I’ve loved this band since 96. It’s finally refreshing hearing an American talk about them. For the record. “Be Here Now” in my opinion has aged like fine wine. “Don’t Go Away” is one of the greatest songs ever written.
As someone who suffers from Panic Disorder (regular panic attacks) this is the song that describe my condition the best. It comes from knowhere, sometimes when I just getting to eat my dinner and when it comes it comes and you have to live through. I've never done drugs in my life. I developed panic disorder because I have a chronic illness and had a lots of pain and my brain couldn't handle it anymore but the end result is similar. Edit: I should have started with this, it is a great analysis of the song and one of my favourite songs from Oasis.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. The idea that the first verse is the build up to a panic attack is absolutely amazing. You’ve given me an enhanced perspective on one of my favourite songs ever. Hats off
I suffered with a few brutal panic attacks in my early twenties and the line ‘my family don’t seem so familiar’ always hits a nerve with me from those bad ones. It’s the most terrifying insane feeling having this shroud of darkness fall over you and feeling all alone while you fall head first into the void.
In no particular order these are the first 10 that come to my mind... Stop Crying Your Heart Out, Supersonic, Don't look back in.., Bring it on Down, Hindu Times, Gas Panic, Cast no Shadow, Slideaway, Champagne S, Go Let it Out... could make another 10 from them just as good tbh
Be here now being the drug filled party the night before and sotsog being the hangover in the morning is probably the best description i have ever heard when it comes to those two
Can't believe I am still listening to this song in 2024! 24 years! Underrated. I always prefer the Gas Panic! Wembley 2nd night. Awesome video! I'm from Singapore by the way!
I thought I had read, or heard that a lot of the lyrics for this song were taken from someone's suicide note. How true that is I don't know, but if you listen to the lyrics carefully and put yourself in the mind of somebody suicidal, there's much that relates.
Noel had a valium dependence that he was trying to come off of. This song is about the panic attacks from benzo withdrawal...It's documented in one of the books about them, i forget which one
I cannot believe you didnt metion the bass of the song. The bass line is amazing and it marks the comeback of bass in oasis song after the over the top exaggerated guitars of Be here now. It includ noel playing bass in Go let it out clip
Played by sound engineer Paul Stacey. It's been reported than Bonehead and Guigsy had taped some tracks in the early stage of recording but they never leaked.
Noel almost always says he quit drugs completely in 98 but it is well known he was heavily addicted to Valium throughout 99 and 2000 after he quit cocaine to deal with his attacks.
@@rizlahillofficialdon’t think so, he has said he much prefer alcohol over weed in an interview which tells me he probably doesn’t react that well to the cannabis high.
Funny hearing saying that about definitely maybe after being on his tour this year with it ,id give a lot more than a tenner for a signed noel and especially liam cd /record. Lol.
apparently noel got quite strict and business-like in the studio, which bonehead and guigsy felt wasn't what the boys were about which is why they left (not just because of the no drugs rule)
I do remember a news snippet in the NME Originals Oasis that stated that they missed a US no.1 spot with Be Here Now being pipped by Puff Daddy by like a few hundred copies. Glad karma caught up with p diddy🙃
I loved this video! I remember going to Radioshack in 2000 and picking up my own CD of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Gas Panic was one of my favorites on the album. Sadly, if I were to compare Gas Panic to one of my other favorites 'Magic Pie', It wouldn't be a competition. I hope you will do another video on my favorite Oasis song, Magic Pie, next!
They went to ROPPONGI, TOKYO, and visited the local famous BAR there named GAS PANIC (yes, that was the actual name) and stole the name from there. The bar was literally one of THE MOST FAMOUS bars in Roppongi (finally closed in 2019), I know, because I used to hang out there with the ex-pats from ALL AROUND THE WORLD who would go there to get smashed as I used to back in 1991 and 1992 Japanese fans and people have been to Roppongi know LMAO
Probably my fav song from Oasis. When We play it with my Oasis tribute band…pure magic! This is me playing it ua-cam.com/video/hucnPIh1ha4/v-deo.htmlsi=w_uhKGgyaD5gt_X7
Noel (apparently) wrote BHN in two weeks. That includes songs like Stand By Me, Don't Go Away, and I Hope I Think I Know... Infinitely worse albums have taken longer to write. BHN is a cult classic among fans.
gas panic is all about smoking to much weed and other drugs getting paranoid as fuck and stopping and going through all the withdrawals and realizing that some if your friends aint actually your friends and are just there for the drugs
Also, this album didn't have enough good songs.. which I think they (or he noel) should keep on trying on the next album...SOTSOG is and will forever be an anomaly in Oasis music career.. one and only, and that's a pity..a second album on this style wouldnt been soooooooo good.
They were pretty big in the US, dude. They just kept fucking up their momentum and tours everytime they came through. They had excellent radioplay and their music videos were all over MTV.

Familiar to millions version cant be beaten.
I think I prefer the version in Rio
Live is even better than album version!
Masterpiece.
right, the studio version oddly doesn't live up to how great it is live.
Great video… Best song on SOTSOG, easily a contender for the Oasis top 10.
My absolute favourite song. Very relatable and it has helped me through some heavy times coming down.
Feels good being back on track.
I’ve loved this band since 96. It’s finally refreshing hearing an American talk about them. For the record. “Be Here Now” in my opinion has aged like fine wine. “Don’t Go Away” is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Except Noel stole the chorus for "Don't Go Away" from The Real People's "Feel the Pain." Look it up. 😮

Can’t argue with any of that. Well put together. Incredible tune.
I get panic attacks so relate to this bigtime.i dont think anyone could describe it better in a song.simply phenomenal

Roll it over the best song
I think the the song means to me is that noel is sailing on the sea of the panic attack and the waves are drowning him as he tries to swept away
Some of Noel’s best lyrics on this song
“Gas Panic” is the name of a famous bar in Tokyo!
Their best song post first 2 albums. Liam’s singing is at his peak to me, their Jools Holland performance is the best
I thought i saw liam on the street the other day but as i got closer i realised it was just a stepped on dog turn !
Impressive video; congratulations!
Great video- but one thing which grinds my gears- it’s pronounced Paul McGwigan- like his nickname- gwigsy (spelt how it sounds)
A bit like the pronunciation of Brisbane! It’s not Brizz Bayne! Briz b’n

Was this a high school project?
That inmate pic looks like Theo Von
Why ‘Gas’?
Weed or maybe gas referencing cocaine bc the smell
Noel thought he'd left the oven on and had a meltdown.
gas reference to how the panic creeps in slow and quietly like a gas..
Gas bill was too high. He panicked
gas panic is all about smoking to much weed and other drugs getting paranoid as fuck and stopping and going through all the withdrawals and realizing that some if your friends aint actually your friends and are just there for the drugs

Definitive masterpiece?!?! Wtf?. Seriously if it wasn’t on the first two albums it shouldn’t be discussed.
Ignorant comment
This song is cliche and sonically irritating. Good analysis, just repeating what he says in his obvious lyrics.
Way worse than the be here now and it only got worse from there
There is no bigger oasis fan than me, but this is a mid tier song
They didn't play Brisbane after Liam assaulted a photographer (not a fan) the day of the concert. I had tickets to that show. It was cancelled. 🥲
