    So you are yanking the aluminum plate out of the ferric chloride bath every minute because it gets hot from the reaction. You are cooling the thing in cold water and scrubbing the left over gunk with a toothbrush, then repeating the process. I was wondering if this method is suitable for delicate intaglio etching on aluminum that is much thinner. Guess I will see. My only worry is the asphaltum resist I am using might fail if temp is an issue. Wondering if some good old enamel lacquer might do the trick instead.

    Awesome video, thank you!!!
    One question I have as I'm trying to figure out the best way to do a project similar to yours is what materials are you using to create the transfer? Also it looks like your using simple packing tape on the back to prevent etching?

    •  7 років тому +6

      To transfer the image I use "transfer foil for vinyl cut graphics" But I'm not sure if this is the exact translation. I have a foil from graphic studio where I let cut out the stickers.
      For covering the back side you can use any tape. It is there purely to seal the surface is not etched.

    •  7 років тому +10

      Thanks pleased me your interest. I let it etch 30-60 seconds. Then it rinse with clean water. Rinse with it due cooling because heat is generated during etching. And on the surface of iron settles, it will remove tooth brush so that the etched surface was not bumps. I am using plain color spray paint. To remove color using water sandpaper, grit 280.

    So I tried this today with a small 32mm diameter aluminium disc that was 2mm thick. I cleaned it with acetone first then sat it in ferric chloride but it didn't seem to bubble like that and doesn't seem to have done much. What have I done wrong.

    •  6 років тому +2

      Hi . Did you use pure aluminum or anodized? If the surface of the aluminum is anodised it is not possible to etching.

    • @Steverobbo
      @Steverobbo 6 років тому +1

      Matěj Novák I thought it was just pure aluminium but maybe it did have a coating of some kind on it. I never sanded over it first as I thought it was just clean aluminium. Maybe next time I will try that first. It has etched it a little bit but it took all day and didn't look close to the effect you got with yours. My ferric chloride says 40% is that strong enough.

    •  6 років тому +1

      Yes it is possible that there was some coating on aluminum. The etching of pure aluminum takes place quite quickly. The chloride concentration you use is good. Try clean aluminum and it will work.

  • @brandonlowe7808
    @brandonlowe7808 5 років тому +1

    Was this piece of aluminum anodized? Also would ferric chloride affect the results if I used a vinyl stencil? I am wanting to do the chrome strips on the side of my truck but im not sure if it will work and Its hard to find intact aluminum pieces for a 73 shortbed f100

    •  5 років тому

      Sorry i'm late. aluminum must be clean. If aluminum is anodized it will not work. The chloride template does not affect the template.
      However, care should be taken for temperature and thin or sharp shapes. They tend to peel off.

    What is ferric chloride used for in the house hold?

    •  7 років тому

      Occasionally etching printed circuit boards. Ferric chloride that can not be used for copper etching is used for etching aluminum.

    •  7 років тому +2

      I'm sorry I probably wrote it vaguely. I use the same iron chloride for both copper and aluminum. Ferric chloride is capable of etching a certain amount of copper, and then copper is incapable of etching. This (used) ferric chloride is then used for etching aluminum.

  • @noa2012prints

    •  7 років тому

      @noa2012prints 7 років тому

      Tanx a lot for information.Just one more question,how long time i need for this deep?

    •  7 років тому

      Time etching can not say exactly. Heat is created during etching. Larger etched surface creates more heat. And the warmed etching bath. How bath has higher temperature by the aluminum etches faster.
      Etch 30 seconds to 1 minute after the aluminum plate put into cold water to cool, tooth brush gently clean the etched surface and give another etch. Repeat this process until etched surface will have the desired depth.
      I repeated this about 6 times me to get to the depth of 0.15 mm.
