Funny thing, I use the Bar S franks as fish bait. Catfish and bass love them! I usually slice them in 1 to 1 and a half inch pieces, put them in a ziploc bag, add garlic powder and cherry or strawberry flavored Jello. The juices of the hot dog absorb the Jello and garlic powder. You can leave them in the fridge for 24 hours up to a week. It can be a bit stinky, but the longer you leave them in the fridge, the better it becomes. Catfish go crazy for them.
2:18 - So, about 20 years ago I had the chance to tour the Plantation turkey plant. We watched the entire run of processing. The mechanically separated meat refers to one of the last steps in processing where a powered scraping like tool is taken to the turkey carcass after the major cuts like breasts, thighs, legs and wings have already been harvested. The scraper is used on the carcass to remove any remaining small pieces of meat. The meat is combined with spices and fillers and then sent off to be extruded into bologna, hotdogs and other turkey loaf products. No doubt it’s a similar process for pork, beef and chicken.
Back in 2012, when I was absolutely dead broke, I ate a lot of Bar S hot dogs from Dollar Tree. I actually liked the taste and I couldn't beat getting 3-4 meals for $1.
Your rating was spot on, Oscar Mayer hot dogs have been my favorite inexpensive hot dog for over 50 years. I use the Bar-S hot dogs to give my dogs their medicine.😂

Difference of opinion. My favorites in order are Ballpark Oscar Meyer Bar S, cooked well. I do not like Gwaltney. They even leave a sticky residue in the skillet when you cook them. Never thought of cooking hot dogs with butter. I'll have to try that.
I would love to see a review of beef hot dogs! My husband prefers all-beef hot dogs (and won't eat ones with no beef at all -- although he will eat Vienna sausages!), and my daughter has trouble digesting pork, so I've been buying beef hot dogs for a long time.
Do you have an Aldi near you? Their Angus beef uncured dogs at 6 for $4 have become a favorite of mine. The beefy flavor really comes through. Almost like a sausage instead of a dog. I brought some to a family outing and only one person didn't care for them. She said they were too salty, which I really don't agree with. She got the last one on the grill and It was way overdone so that could be the reason.
@@valvenator There are Aldi stores in the county seats 20 miles N & S of me, but I'm only able to shop there on weekends, and not every weekend, either.
@@Toutab Funny, why? I do about 75 percent of my shopping there. Cheaper and a lot more convenient since I don't have to walk miles of aisles through one of those stupid supercenters to get the basics I need. OMG, I don’t normally get cheap hot dogs, and always get beef, but I got the Oscar Mayer cheap ones because of this video and you were right, they were pretty good! 😊
In the UK we would call these "Hot Dogs" mechanically seperated meat, but most would cook by placing them in a pan of simmering water for 5 mins normally served on buns with onions/ketchup/mustard. We only have two or three different options. A sausage (aka Banger) is choice cuts of normally pork meat (chicked/beef also available) little filler, which would be either fried or cooked in the oven. We have a huge choice of sausages and all can be eaten either like a hotdog or very often they are served with mash, peas and gravy! Confusingly if you go to a food stall in the UK (fare/market/roadside etc) and ask for a "hotdog" you will inevitably get a sausage in a hotdog bun!
The internet doesn't seem to agree but I'm with you on this one. Oscar Mayer makes the best. Especially grilled or fried. Great bologna for frying too.
MR Wolfe, I too had experiences with flavors in a hot dog that should not be there, like your Ballpark dog. About 20 years ago, I bought some tofu dogs, I was just being adventurous, and noticed they had a Vick's vapo rub flavor to them! That was my end of dabbling in fake meat!
You havent lived until youve tried Koegels brand, specifcally the viennas. I don't know if they're available in your area but every grocer here in MI has them.
Around 10 years ago when I was in between jobs and had so little money that I almost became homeless (doing much better now) I ate whatever I could. My local grocery store had a deal on BarS hot dogs 10 packs for $10. So I bought 20 packs for that month. Within 2 weeks I had a job and around 5 packs of hot dogs left. I chose to eat a paste that consisted of flour and water. After I got paid, I swore off BatS for life.
I've eaten a fair share of Gwaltney's and even tried the Bar S brand once. I do remember really liking the Gwaltney's and you described Bar S brand perfectly.
acctually I used to haul meat trimmings from slaughter houses to the factories that made these and the cuts of beef pork and chicken looked like you could make a decent meal out of them.
Thanks for this info! After experimentation with other brands, Oscar Mayer Is my favorite. I have been nuking them but you have convinced me that frying them in butter (Kerrygold) is THE way to the best taste.
When I was a kid we use to laugh at Corn King hotdogs that were 99 cents a pack. That was in the late 70s/early 80s. Now someone is selling a pack for $1.49 in 2023. I would not want to eat that.
Worked for Tyson making hot dogs. Beef can be beef hearts. We make several brands, and they all have different receipes. A ingredient list excludes quantity.
Too many comments to read through but was wondering if anyone caught the ingredient list for Gwaltney Great Dogs @7:49 doesn't list pork as an ingredient even though the package advertises it in the ingredients @7:39?
When I was a child in the 1970s..Bar S hotdogs had offal in the ingredients. My mom never bought them but my best friend's mom did. To be honest they tasted great as a Jr. High school student. She fried them in tortillas with cheese..Yum! I forget what she called them but they were really good. PS..You can't do much to Ballpark turkey dogs...Put chili on them and they are pretty good.
Well Mr Wolf Pit and Family... I can only Speak for Myself... I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR ABILITY TO CUT TO THE CHASE AND JUST TELL US ALL WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW TO HELP US MAKE THE BEST USE OF OUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS... TO FEED OUR FAMILIES... God Bless You and Your Family... Keep Up the Great Work...
I agree with your assessment. Personally I won't normally eat the cheap mystery meat hot dogs (I prefer Hebrew National). I haven't tried all the options you covered but consider the Oscar Mayer franks the best of the bunch.
I remember when hot dogs where made from pork, chicken and beef, in that order. My dad got older, only one he could eat w/o "repeating" was bar s. As for myself, nathins or Hebrew national, unless I can get conns
I do wonder about kosher all-beef hotdogs. My favorite is Hebrew National knockwurst, and occasionally those are sold buy-one-get-one-free (that’s 12-ounce packages) so they’re not as insanely expensive as usual. But I wonder what part of the kosher cow carcass they come from…
As pointed out, they likely are the same cuts of meat, just... Kosher. The whole point of sausages like hotdogs are to make use of otherwise discarded pieces. Eat the quality steak for dinner tonight, have sausages available to last you for awhile longer after the good cuts are consumed.
I agree with your ranking thoroughly! Oscar Mayer uncured hot dogs are my favorite. Bar S, however, I wouldn't feed to a stray dog. On a side note, I grew up in the 1960s and became a young adult in the early '70s. When I started living on my own, I couldn't understand why the hot dogs were different from the ones I remembered eating growing up. It wasn't until I purchased Schwan's hot dogs in the casings years later that I realized what I was missing: the natural casings! Of course, now you can get them in the casings, at whatever premium price. But for a good basic hot dog, Oscar Mayer wins for me.
This made me remember watching a documentary on how sausages are made. Watched it with my dad and he couldn't eat hot dogs for months after learning the ingredients.
I did a little research and found out that cherry powder in hotdogs is an antioxidant and it helps to speed up the curing reaction between nitrate and meat
Hot Dog Story Time: A while ago Oscar Mayer came out with "Big And Juicy" hot dogs. They were big. I bought some, cooked according to the directions (normally I wouldn't bother with the directions but I wanted to give them their best shot), and ... Holy of holies ... the snap when you bit into them was top notch and they were the juiciest hot dogs I've ever had! I don't buy hot dogs often so it was a while before I bought them again. I prepared them accordingly and .... blah. Just hot dogs. Where'd the snap go? Why weren't they juicy like last time? I dunno, but I believe they stopped selling them so they probably knew what bait and switch they had pulled.
Sometimes my mom would put them in baked beans, sort of an upgrade to Beenie weenies, I guess! And as a kid I would dunk a cold hot dog in my Sugar Pops cereal haven't had that in 50 years and the thought makes me a little queasy!
I'm guessing that Gwaltney's is a regional brand. For me, depending on price point, it's Casper's (Eastern San Francisco Bay area) or Miller's (Lodi, CA). In my area of Cali, depending on timing and location, both Casper's and Miller's are available at Costco.
Would love to see the all beef review/comparison. I can't have hot dogs anymore due to End Stage Renal Failure, but would like to see how my favorite (Oscar Myer) comes out
speaking of Chinese food, a lot of chinese families, for like a using up leftovers dish, we grab some cheap hot dogs, dice them up, and mix them with leftovers, soy sauce, sesame oil, and some vinegar, and then add old rice, for a fridge cleaning fried rice
My personal favorite hot dogs are Koegel's hot dogs, but those are pricey, but I have to agree for cheap hot dogs Oscar Mayer is dang good I like the bun length ones. But lately compared in calories I have been buying Johnsonville Turkey Cheddar smoked brats, they aren't bad in price they have less calories than the bun length hot dogs and they really taste great.

Nice I like your work. I would like to see a beef hot dog comparison.
I use cherry powder in my pork rub, its very expensive and really sets the pork off nicely.
I noticed that the Gwaltney Chicken and Pork dogs / the last one done, had no pork listed in the ingredients... just mechanically separated chicken
We the People thank you.
Oscar Mayer bologna and hot dogs have always been my faves.
I agree, we need an all beef high end hot dog challenge 😊
May I submit for consideration Dietz & Watson natural casing franks...
Around 10 years ago when I was in between jobs and had so little money that I almost became homeless (doing much better now)
I ate whatever I could.
Love your reviews, and would like to see an all-beef review, but Gwalney's? Going to their website they are not available anywhere near me. 😞
This is a must have video
Thanks for this info! After experimentation with other brands, Oscar Mayer Is my favorite.
I have been nuking them but you have convinced me that frying them in butter (Kerrygold) is THE way to the best taste.
When I was a kid we use to laugh at Corn King hotdogs that were 99 cents a pack. That was in the late 70s/early 80s. Now someone is selling a pack for $1.49 in 2023. I would not want to eat that.
I never saw those but my parents used to buy corn king bacon, which tasted awesome.
Worked for Tyson making hot dogs. Beef can be beef hearts. We make several brands, and they all have different receipes. A ingredient list excludes quantity.
I always get Bar S because they are always only a dollar at the store. Put em on a cheap bun with some hotsauce and mustard and they do the job.
wow i thought they were only used as dog treats
Gross.
Nah s bar is trash once you’ve tasted others
Too many comments to read through but was wondering if anyone caught the ingredient list for Gwaltney Great Dogs @7:49 doesn't list pork as an ingredient even though the package advertises it in the ingredients @7:39?
Oscar Mayers will ALWAYS and forever be the SUPERIOR hot dog next to Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs.
You should try Better Cheddar smoked hot dogs, fried crispy. Best hotdog I've had. Pricey but worth it.
Only hot dog my oldest daughter would eat growing up
Well Mr Wolf Pit and Family...
Got to do something about that focus. Thanks. Love the channel.
Does that go with the carnivore diet? LOL Great job and thank you for testing them so WE THE PEOPLE don't have to ;)
They go with carnivore if you eat them by themselves, no bun.
I still go with the head-canon that you do up your nails for the videos, haha. Good stuff, buddy.
I remember when hot dogs where made from pork, chicken and beef, in that order. My dad got older, only one he could eat w/o "repeating" was bar s. As for myself, nathins or Hebrew national, unless I can get conns
I use Nathan's All Beef! 💖 🤗 You could review those?

*Sorry about that.*

I ALWAYS buy the Oscar Meyer Cheese Dogs. I can't seem to get enough of them.
Try the Oscar Mayer Smokies if you haven’t all ready. Maybe after the Beef Hot dog video, you can do Smoked Sausage hot dogs 😊
YES, THEY ARE AWESOME ! THERE MIGHT BE BETTER, BUT I HAVEN'T EATEN A BETTER HOT DOG THAN THE SMOKIES.
@@meauxjeaux431 I agree. 😊
Those are the best for making chili dogs and pigs in a blanket.
Yeah Oscar Meyer is up there. Do you have kogel Vienna dogs by you. Maybe it's a local thing here in Michigan. Kinda expensive
I do wonder about kosher all-beef hotdogs. My favorite is Hebrew National knockwurst, and occasionally those are sold buy-one-get-one-free (that’s 12-ounce packages) so they’re not as insanely expensive as usual. But I wonder what part of the kosher cow carcass they come from…
Probably scraps off the bone like most hotdogs are made. As long as a rabbi has declared the cows kosher then it's fine.
Hahahahahaha!@@OrbObserver
@@CarsandCats ? That's literally how it works.
As pointed out, they likely are the same cuts of meat, just... Kosher. The whole point of sausages like hotdogs are to make use of otherwise discarded pieces. Eat the quality steak for dinner tonight, have sausages available to last you for awhile longer after the good cuts are consumed.
Do You have John Morrell in your area? they do bologna and hot dogs on the cheap side but it's pretty good. I've never seen Gwaltney anywhere
Good review, thanks for sharing, God bless !
For us the People so we won't have to.
Thank you for your sacrifice 😎
Beef! Where's the Beef? Ha! Yes, please! :) Thanks, Wolfe Pit! PS your nails look great! :)
Dig in boys
Bon Appetit
I eat them all an their delicious
I'm from Michigan. We have koegel hot dogs here. There's no comparison to any of these. Once you eat koegels you won't eat any other hot dog.
Thanks for the video. Have you reviewed frozen lasagnas?
You know you’re getting quality when you pay $1.49 for 8 hotdogs … just sayin 😂
😃👍👍
The cherry powder and celery extract act as a curative instead of sodium nitrite. The Oscar Meyers have no artificial curing additives.
I’m a Boomer and I grew up eating Oscar Mayer Wieners like you, cold right out the package and the way my mom made em, boiled. 😋
Sometimes my mom would put them in baked beans, sort of an upgrade to Beenie weenies, I guess! And as a kid I would dunk a cold hot dog in my Sugar Pops cereal haven't had that in 50 years and the thought makes me a little queasy!
I've recently learned the joy of boiled hot dogs and sausages after years of bbqing and microwaving - night and day, i only like them boiled now.
I’m eating some Libby canned corned beef while watching this. Best cooking and food review show for the average joe on UA-cam.
I can't have hot dogs anymore due to End Stage Renal Failure, but would like to see how my favorite (Oscar Myer) comes out
Not sure if you posted the wrong list but I didn’t see any pork listed at all in the ingredients list for Gwaltney Chicken & Pork hot dog.
speaking of Chinese food, a lot of chinese families, for like a using up leftovers dish, we grab some cheap hot dogs, dice them up, and mix them with leftovers, soy sauce, sesame oil, and some vinegar, and then add old rice, for a fridge cleaning fried rice
I prefer when servicing sizes are per unit and not by weight. Who eats 1 and a half or 1 and 3/4ths of hot dogs?
Are hot dogs a raw product that needs to be cooked first? Or have they been pre-cooked in the package?
