10 brands of Beef Hot Dogs Taste Test. What brand of hot dog do you like the best? I test ten different brands and was not as easy as I thought it would be. The top two of my favorites have different taste, but I would be happy with either and almost a toss up. One is more salty and that may make your personal decision easier. Me, I like a salty dog. The top two of my choices are millimeters apart with great great flavor.
Here is a link for different Hot Dog Recipes:
    ua-cam.com/play/PLElC1Q8zrODjRRRLE87AlPPoe1uf2Y8TP.html
Background music from Apple Garage Band
Songs used: Tigris, Progressive House, and Peach Cobbler.
Honorable mention in no perticular order and quite excellent:
Koegels Viennas from Michigan (these are a beef/pork mix)
    Vienna Beef from Chicago
Boar's Head (watery yes, but a good watery)

Excellent taste test Michael. I am a big hot dog fan and your top three are my top three. Nathan's is my go-to dog because it's difficult to find Sabrett's around here. Dogs with natural casing are best grilled, makes the casing less chewy. I like my dogs a little less salty because I like to add mustard and sauerkraut which adds to the sodium level.

    • @MichaelsHomeCooking
      @MichaelsHomeCooking  4 роки тому +2

So happy to hear from you Tom. I know you look but not speak often. I had to order some of the dogs. I do agree about the casings, nothing like a good casing. I also love sauerkraut on dogs, but I rinse the hell out of it. I hope you have a great weekend and thank you!

Koegels from Flint, Michigan with the natural casing is a must for a Detroit Coney Island. That snap of the natural casing is half the experience - the other half is the coney sauce made with beef heart topped with raw onion and mustard and the third half is the steamed bun. Also grilled on a flat top. A Detroit legend.

Oh, yes, for sure the Koegel's. I recommended them for your taste test. I've not tried the OM angus dogs only their regular beef.
I call the weather here absolutely lovely because the temp is more my speed now- upper 50s into the 60s. Been chilling down at night but I love it. Am keeping my bedroom windows open despite the dip into the 40s.
Headed out to a few rummage sales that friends are holding today and then staying for dinner at the last one. Talk about a hot dog- this friend's husband makes his own using pork and venison! omg! I know he adds garlic, black pepper, and of course, salt, but whatever else he adds for spices are killer! He makes a variety of heat, I prefer the mild or medium and he puts shredded cheese in some, too. I'm making myself drool and I don't even know if they are on the menu! lol

Luckily I live far out enough that I don't have too much to worry about at night with the windows. I have my own mobile home, but in a small trailer court. I'm saving up for my own small plot of land. I found one, but it had so many old growth trees on it that anytime the wind would blow I would be outside picking up sticks all the time. I may grill a chicken tomorrow. Nothing special, just a small whole bird. Have a good night!

We're right in town but I am comfortable having my bedroom windows open.
Talk about the wind! I'm sitting at my friends on the patio after we closed up their sale and the wind was about knocking us over. We decided dinner had best be inside so we're enjoying some great venison burgers and all the fixins when I look out the window and see their sale sign blowing down the road! • @MichaelsHomeCooking
      @MichaelsHomeCooking  4 роки тому

Hi Susie!! You ask a difficult question. When I started working at Home Depot on Fairmont Av in San Diego, there was a hot dog stand out front every day. Often I would get one with onions, tomatoes and mayo and I was a very happy camper. They did not offer any kind of chili or Coney Island type toppings. I like them almost any way except plain. Who doesn't like a dog with Coney Island/sloppy Joe topping with onions cheese and mustard! Then there is Cole slaw that is so very good on a dog. Then there is the Los Angeles Dog, did you see that one today? It is so so good. I'd have to think about it longer for a definitive answer.
      What are your favorite toppings?

Koegels are the best but only because I’m from Michigan and those are the go-to choice for backyard cookouts and because they offer good taste for being pretty cheap here in Michigan
you can pick up a case of them that is the same size as the box used to ship stuff like microwaves or mini guitar amps basically the boxes you store in the big chest freezer you have in your garage or basement that will be used only for parties and cookouts for like 15 bucks on average
if you buy them for family meals they will last you between a full year or half a year depending on the size of your family and how often you eat them

@@MichaelsHomeCooking they might have removed them as I was growing up early into the 2000s
but since you live in Indiana you are paying at least 2 times the price we have to pay since they only reside in Michigan and have to ship cross country as I recently learned that they are now shipping the hotdogs cross country and that is why they are so expensive because they are located solely in Michigan so that plays a huge factor
but here in Michigan we can by a 4 pound family pack of frankfurters for that price range and I’d say it would take a few pack like maybe 4 for an average size party with hamburgers
So the main problem you face is shipping the pack to Indiana which is at least 5 hours from Michigan so it’s not nearly as cheap as buying them from a Michigan store

Thanks for doing a hot dog taste test without the bun and all kind of toppings. Yes, it sounds incredible that anyone would put stuff on the test food, but I just saw a part of one that did and it was ridiculous.
    My opinion:
Sabrett is the classic iconic NYC "dirty water dog" found all over the city. Since there is apparently no other brand of dog available on the NYC streets, it's what everyone gets, like it or not. It's actually a very good dog.
Vienna Beef is the Chicago equivalent of Sabrett, even though Chicago is the "hog butcher of the world". Every hot dog place seems to serve them and puts a large salad on them until the dog is virtually entirely submerged. With just mustard as Zeus intended, it's alright. Not Nathans, but consumable.
Hebrew National is the only Kosher dog of the bunch. Does that make it taste better? I don't know what makes it taste better, but something certainly does. Being Kosher does mean that the ingredients are no-nonsense pure and wholesome, for what it's worth.
I always liked Oscar Meyer pork dogs, which I can no longer find. The ones with "some" pork are still one of my faves, but they taste like no other dog. They're in a league of their own. However, I do not eat OM beef dogs, so no opinion.
Snake River Farms. What a name for a hot dog. What IS it made of? An expensive, gourmet hot dog is an oxymoron. Definitely not for me.
Nathan's. Not much to say about the all time champion. Grilled, they are the Aristotelian ideal of hot dogs. Never had one steamed, it would be blasphemy.
So, New York City won overall, with HN, Sabrett, and Nathans all in the top three. No surprise to me. Neither is it any surprise that you judged Nathans' as best.
Hebrew National hot dogs were first sold in New York in 1905, 11 years earlier than Nathan's. Conagra acquired the brand’s parent company in 1993 and the products are now manufactured at a plant in Quincy, Michigan, but they'll always be a NYC dog to me.
Sabrett dogs are made in the Bronx, as NYC as you can get.
    Nathan's? Brooklyn, where else?
Oh, and a skinless hot dog is not a real hot dog. I don't know what it is, but I'd never go near one.

Hello Glicksman, are you related to Jiminy Glick? What can I say about your comment... many things! First of all thank you. I appreciate and admire your thoughts and knowledge. BUT on occasion I do like different toppings. I would be happy to go to a party where hot dogs were the main course as long as there was a spread of all kinds of toppings for me and everyone to choose from. I do agree toppings can take away from the taste of the dog, but sometimes that is needed because of the choice of dog the person has chosen to buy. Yes a dog is best (improved) grilled yet for this taste test I steamed them to get to the true taste of each hot dog. You did get one thing wrong, Sabrette was the winner here. Nathans was second. Don't know why you think I chose Nathans.

Sorry about the mistake. Must be a case of personal prejudice. Sabrett dogs are very good, and you found Nathans to be very close, so I have no disagreement with your choices.
Toppings in moderation are fine, but the amount of stuff that the Chicagoans put on their dogs is ridiculous to me. I mean, you want a hot dog? Great You want a salad? Great. You want to overpower your hot dog with a salad? Why?
When in Chicago, I order my dogs with mustard only. The looks across the counter that I get are priceless.

Michael, you should try a Berks hot dog. I really think you'd love them. I've tried a bunch of hot dogs and they're my favorite by far

This is the first I've heard of Berks, I apologize William. There will always be a local brand here and there that are excellent. I would love to try them! Thank you William!

Being from New York myself, Sabretts are everywhere and their Natural Casing hot dog has a hickory smoked flavor with garlic, good amount of juice and a snappy chew, ive had Nathans and Hebrew Nationals and I will say hes spot on, Sabrett No. 1 , Def close with Nathans and Hebrew Nationals im so/so with. So if I was dying and had to have a last supper, it would be a
three Natural Casing Sabretts dirty water dogs with some spicy brown mustard and a table spoon of Sabretts push-cart style red onions 🤤🤤🤤🌭🌭🌭

This is one of the best taste comparisons I've seen on UA-cam -- hot dogs or otherwise. But I think it would've been better to use the Sabretts version *without* the casing. It would be more of a true "head-to-head" comparison with the others (except for that gross looking Shark River thing). ;) The non-cased Sabretts are more popular anyway.

You shouldn't be slicing them...! Bite them off to get the natural pop of the casing (if any)...! The SRF is made from (Japanese) "Waygu" Beef....

It's all personal taste, but the SRF was not in my top 6. Thank you for watching and your comment.

@@MichaelsHomeCooking Yep realize that. I was just saying that's why they are so much more expensive... better quality meat cuts... Sabretts are my favorite too. That's what all the NYC hot dog carts use...!

Very odd that by chance I am watching this on Labor Day (one year later) and eating two Boar's Head hot dogs after not having one in well over 30 years.
