  • This was our first time boondocking for this long (12 days)!
    ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Click Show More ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
    First off, we're using the term "boondocking" to describe the camping style (no hookups), not the location. We have “mooch-docked” with family and friends for longer, but we always had some kind of partial hookup (15 amp, water, etc.)
    We were both excited and nervous about this location because the Lone Rock Beach Campground is literally right on the beach and is pretty much a free-for-all (no sites just wide open)! Upon arrival, we quickly realized that we needed to unhook and leave the RV behind to scout out the best site and path to get there. A lot of the sand is packed pretty hard, but there were areas of soft, thick sand that we wanted to avoid!
    We found an awesome spot to set up camp with an unobstructed view of the Lone Rock and Lake Powell and it was spectacular!! This is a dry camping, first-come-first-served campground, but there is a dump station and restrooms on-site. Keep in mind that ATT has zero coverage in this area (at least during the time we were there - May 2019) We connected via Verizon just fine, however. This is also a free-for-all type of atmosphere where dogs run free and people are constantly walking through your site. It’s definitely not a private RV Resort 😜
    The location of LRB Campground was fantastic for sightseeing. We got out on the motorcycle several times, drove out to Horseshoe Bend, took a tour of Antelope Canyon and also got out on a boat tour of Lake Powell! Our 12 days were action-packed and we made it the full 12 days without having to hitch up and drive to the dump! Whew!
    We look forward to visiting that area again, but our time in Utah was not finished. After this stay, we headed to St. George to visit Tara’s uncle and to explore Zion National Park!

    Lake Powell is BEAUTIFUL. We used to load up a boat and go stay on the lake for a week. Great fishing, water skiing, and snorkeling. You can see so deep in most of the lake.
    Hope you enjoyed the stay.

    We took an Antelope Canyon tour about eight years ago and I don't remember it being anywhere NEAR that expensive. And there were not a lot of people taking the tour. It was early, early spring. Not sure if that had anything to do with our experience. But, yeah, it was AWESOME!
    It's scary to see how much water is NOT in Lake Powell these days though.

    I can say that our 7 day houseboat vacation on Lake Powell is one of the top three trips we have ever taken. Towed our Ski boat 800 miles one way to get there, and next time we will launch from the south end of the lake, but I tell you...it is breathtaking. Planning to go again in a year. Towed the ski boat behind the houseboat...never pass a marina without getting fuel, and you will be fine. It really is stunning. You can get a lot further into the back canyons in a smaller boat.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  4 роки тому

      We definitely want to try that. Is there a particular company you'd recommend to rent from?

    • @archstanton9206
      @archstanton9206 4 роки тому

      I believe Arramark is the only authorized concession company on the lake. We have 14 people that want to go this trip. It makes $ sense for us to rent to 56 ft boats for this group. Go with people you love and would camp with normally. We love the Escalante River Arm. Rent and leave out of Wawheap. Start planning this a year in advance...we are going summer of 2021 and are having our preplan meeting with everyone right after 1-1-20.
      I keep thinking of things to add..sorry for skipping all over here in edits..
      Use the ski boat to scout for beaches to put the houseboat. Always leave at least 2, perfer 3 on houseboat to land it and get the anchors out. They give you a shovel, bury the anchors in the sand. Take some decent handheld radios to communicate between the ski boat and houseboat. Cell service is spotty at best. You will have to hunt for it, back in the canyons it isn't going to happen much.
      If the water is high you can use "the cut" to go up lake from Wawheap and save lots of miles. Never pass a marina with the houseboat, or any boat for that matter, without fueling up. Be off of the main body of the lake by 4pm, the canyons are better but the main body can get rough with wind. Watch for thunderstorms in summer. They provide a good map and the lake is marked with mile markers. Take at least 2 or 3 good binoculars and leave one at helm station to read the markers. Don't miss ice cream at Dangling Rope.
      Move the houseboat now and then, use the ski boat for sightseeing and water sports. Many of the places you can see by water are simply not accessible any other way. We went north of Bullfrog bay and camped about 11 ft below cliff dwelling ruins...it is a very very special place...but..once bitten you will want to return...

    I was there a few years ago and loved it (which is why I clicked on your video). It's shocking to see how low the water has gotten. At the time I was there the water was high enough that your RV would've been parked within 30 ft of the water as I was. I just drug my kayak across the sand. Last year my route took me across the north end of Lake Powell where I thought I'd boondock a few nights at Hite campground. Other than a small pond about 1/4 mile out on the lake the entire area was dry; it's probably all dry now. No good for kayaking anymore but it's still breathtaking country! Thanks for the video!

    Imagine this, 1995 we took our children to the Antelope Canyons, both of them, back then you just walked up to a booth in the desert with a Indian woman collecting a small fee, then a man would take you out to the canyons and leave you there!
    There were no other visitors back then, no one really knew about Antelope Canyon, since then it has become very commercialized, including high fees, a gift shop and a must have guided tour, you can no longer go on your own! I feel so lucky to have experienced the pre-commercialization of the Antelope Canyons!!!
    My husband and I went back on our motorcycles a couple years ago, we found out that you were actually allowed to ride your bikes or drive your car right up to the tour buildings, pay a much smaller fee, and wait for a guided tour there.
    I highly recommend the seven hour boat tour on Lake Powell, it’s a great way to see the area from Arizona into Utah and back. The only problem we had going on our bikes, riding from Arizona into Utah, everybody was riding up our rear ends and trying to get us to go faster, 70 mph wasn’t fast enough!
    Thank you for the videos, glad to see you are having a great time!

    We experienced Lone Rock a few years ago, had to move our trailer 3 different times because the water level was coming up faster than we expected, but it was awesome to have the water just feet from your door. I parked our Harley up top while we were there for about five days. The sand was in our trailer for the next two years till the day we sold it. I also experienced a few houseboat trips in the 80's and were able to park the house boat on the beach at Horseshoebend.

    Lots of nice scenery, just not sure of the dust storms. I had enough of that in Kandahar with sand that was like talcum powder. I hear you about the sand getting into everything. One funny thing that I have noticed watching your videos is the "let's go eat!". It's like that animated movie where the dogs could be doing anything, but the minute they hear "squirrel", they stop what they were doing and focus on the squirrel. Replace "squirrel" with "food" and bang, it's you guys!! Love the videos, keep them coming, especially the tips ones or the technical ones and of course the ones with Miss little Daisy!

    We spent 10 years volunteering with NPS first responders , many in that area! We spent mid Sept-mid Nov. at Glen Canyon for about 3 years. FYI Lake Powell is a seasonal area and you were in off season I believe😉. Half of the town of Page including the Marina and most restaurants shut down after Nov. 1. We had a hard time finding a place to go out to eat after that time! We had out hoses freeze mid Nov and the off season storms can be bad. We have seen the whole road and beach area closed and washed out at Lone Rock in the late season. Worst storm we’ve ever experienced was on that beach. We had to yell to hear each other in the Rig with the wind with lightning striking all around us!😳They turn the water off at Lone Rock around mid Oct I think. Earlier it is beautiful there , in the summer it gets a little wild with the party crowd. We have a Harley and enjoyed riding all through that area but temps can change quickly. We spent a couple of summers at both the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon and many Springs and a few Falls in Zion. The ride on the loop from Zion up over Cedar City is beautiful but can get very cold in the upper elevation. That whole area is best done in Spring or early Fall. Summer is too hot and crowded and late Fall and winter can get very cold and see some snow. We have been off the road for a couple of years but have sold our house and will be back to full timing as soon as we pick up our new Rig in AZ in a couple of weeks. We’ve volunteered in the Tetons and Yosemite also but the rides there can be dicey with all the large wild animal. Maybe we will see you on the road😍

    Lake Powell was my destination bachelor weekend with 8 other buddies, mostly all flew from Wisconsin. We rented a 53 foot houseboat for 4 nights and had a blast. I highly recommend it. The good thing is that they are huge and you can bring lots of friends along and split the cost. We all had beds in the cabin but half of us slept on the upper deck under the stars. The nights are amazingly dark and the amount of stars are crazy. We caught enough Striper (bass) to fill up for a few meals. We went in May before the summer season prices kick in which is much more affordable and hardly anyone on the lake, but it's not that warm. Especially the water. Most of the guys swam but not this tit baby. Hate the cold. I highly recommend the houseboat rental. We cant wait to get to horseshoe bend. Great video. Sorry about the long comment, but hey, you guys got nothin better to do.....

    Let some air out of the tires to 'flatten' out the tread more, gives you better traction in sand. Just don't go too far or the tire will pop off the bead. Given you have the dually as well, it doesnt follow the front tire track so that makes it harder in sand as you're pushing against more sand. A great vid! Glad you had an awesome time there.

You're motorcycle ride reminded me of when my wife & I use to do a lot of riding (bk = before kids) and our oldest is now 35! We had a ton of fun back then as well, so thanks for bringing back the memories! Yes...we did the Antelope tour a couple years ago, on an atv Utah trip, and we where told 'no tripods and no backpacks' and we where packed in like sardines in a can....so, for anyone wishing to get great images (using their tripod) I'd suggest the 'Photography tour', as it has less people, and adds more time to the tour. Some more of God’s majestry. Beautiful. Always fun seeing places thru your eyes, or should I say, camera lense. On the motorcycle is the only way to see all that beauty and smell the smells. Thanks

    Absolutely love Lake Powell But how the wind can blow on and off the lake. That lake and turn into very rough seas without any notice. 👊👍😎

    Wonderful place to boondock. Sand is so fine it got everywhere in our rv. We were at Lonerock in August this year. Got our toad stuck 4 times. 30' class C was fine though. Camped 20' from the water.

    If y’all don’t mind could you do a video of the two of y’all just hanging around the RV on a work day or day in. It might seem silly but I and maybe some others are interested in seeing how it is just living in the toyhauler and how you live in the space. I love your videos, you guys are so informative 💕

    Thanks for dealing with the issues to get this out. Was out there on the bike a few years ago and yes it is awesome. Rocks and more Rocks.. Appreciate the info on cell coverage. Trying to keep up with that since we are able to work remote but do need an internet connection. Be safe as you travel and we really enjoy watching..

    Again, thanks for the memory refresh....I've been up and down 89 many times on my Wing....love that road all the way to Idaho Falls. But when you get the chance, continue north to Panquitch, UT...neat little town. Don't know if they have a campground 'cause all 6 times I stayed there we were on the motorcycle. That said, be safe, have fun, and happy camping. v/r, TS - Denver.
