Leonard Cohen was a fine wine of a man. When listening to this version and comparing it to his younger self singing it, contrary to my expectations, I feel the later one rings even more true, more believable. I was lucky to get to see him and his great team of musicians perform during the American stage of this extended tour and must say that as a performer, in his final years his refinement of concert-as-performance had grown close to perfection. He had us all gripped and on the edge of our seats, no matter the distance from the stage. And his old songs breathed new life, as if written that very day.
I agree that the older he got the better the interpretation of his works became. Almost as if time and live made him believe the lyrics more even than when he originally wrote it. I pick up so many different emotions and levels up in his songs. Passion, spirituality, humor and humanity. Songs that are at the same time loving romantic, erotic and caring. His work give hope for humanity and that there is something better out there.
So many of the heart breaking lines and lyrics in this song touch me deeply. They're in harmony to how my wife and I lived through our marriage, until I lost her 16 months ago. Lyrics can be interpreted in different ways by who ever is listening to them and what you're personally going through in your life. We loved walking together for years. "Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme". Since this song is about saying "goodbye", I interpret that line as , her and I walking to the end of her life together and the end of my life as I've known it, for 40 years. This man was a Heaven sent poet.
@steven-dark Thank you. You obviously know what I'm still going through. I still struggle with it and it still seems unbelievable. I hope time and family love is helping you to cope. If you believe and Leonard believes as others do, I'll keep my faith that my wife and I will be together again once more.
And understand so well what you say! The months before he died, my husband and I so often listen to Cohen. And this one in particular, we listened silently as he never spoke about what we knew was coming. Day after day we said good bye through Cohen's music. 14 years after, I still try to let him go
@@louisegariepy2804 My wife and I didn't speak a lot about what was to come. I guess it was too hard for us. We just wanted to concentrate on what little bit of time we had left together. It's regrettable now, I wish I had said more. Leonard Cohen had a way of reaching inside a person and telling what we couldn't say ourselves through a song. A counselor once told me I don't have to let her go, but that I will have to move forward. Moving forward has been baby steps and it's still baby steps. Unfortunately we have to move forward even when we don't want to. An old co-worker of my wife's told me that I'll never get over it, but that I will get through it. She lost her husband at a very young age. I try to remember those comments. They help a little bit. Maybe those comments could also help you a little bit. Thank you for sharing your deep feelings.
Sitting here weeping. Didn't say goodbye well to my love. "But now its come to distances and both of us must try..." And Leonard has gone beyond too. The task of those who are left...is it harder than leaving?
Absolutely!! -''Ten Francs'' about busking Leonard Cohen's "'That's No Way"' song in a Paris subway in the 80's. ua-cam.com/video/ucuv4fEwxJs/v-deo.html
Reminded me of my Grand-dad. Plus, a memory of teaching us how to use household items to make music. My brother was so inspired that he slept with his harmonica.
First Leonard sings, next Dino Soldo on the mouth harp, and then Leonard says goodbye for a last time. I Just listen and pink away a little tear for the beauty that was and that left out lives.
Like a fool I missed LC in my hometown…..I did not want to go, because I love his music so much, I was afraid of bawling continuously….well this makes me cry…..celestial Leonard, Le hitraot
Excellent, bravo Leonard,I miss you already, I want more! No more, being miserable, just enjoy all the wonderful Leonard Cohen memories. ThankyouLeonard for all the wonderful poetry and music I have enjoyed for over 50 years!
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new In city and in forest they smiled like me and you But now it's come to distances and both of us must try Your eyes are soft with sorrow Hey, that's no way to say goodbye I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me It's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie Your eyes are soft with sorrow Hey, that's no way to say goodbye I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new In city and in forest they smiled like me and you But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie Your eyes are soft with sorrow Hey, that's no way to say goodbye
I actually heard this song in Northern California I was away from my grown children's families and there's great difficulty and suffering and in a young man was it's just a beautiful song I love the original but the older version is it's just quite excellent
We can all rejoice in the fact that Leonard wasn’t for everyone ..in fact many hated him..but he was for US...and we loved him and will continue to love him. His legacy long established and the songs that only those who get it truly Get It.xxx
Al final es la historia de un hombre que expresa de alguna manera su angustia y sobre todo su inconformidad y soledad. Nunca es feliz con lo que tiene.
Renato Russo's version is really good and then I wanted to see Leonard Cohen seen, and I am not a bit disappointed, despite of totally different voices and styles, both Renato and Leonard have their brilliance!
Not sure if this is true but read in some book when Marianne visited him in London she asked him who was that song about. It implied it was about her. I love it too.
That's No Way To Say Goodbye (Ce N'est Pas La Bonne Façon De Dire Adieu) is a song by Leonard Cohen I loved you in the morning, Je t'ai aimée le matin, Our kisses deep and warm, Nos baisers profonds et brûlants Your hair upon the pillow Ta chevelure sur l'oreiller Like a sleepy, golden storm, Comme une tornade d'or ensommeillée Yes many loved before us, Oui beaucoup se sont aimés avant nous I know we are not new, Je sais que nous ne sommes pas les premiers In city and in forest En ville et en forêt They smiled like me and you, Ils souriaient comme toi et moi But now it's come to distances Mais maintenant nous en sommes arrivés à la froideur And both of us must try, Et nous devons tous deux faire des efforts Your eyes are soft with sorrow, Tes yeux sont adoucis de chagrin Hey, that's no way to say goodbye. spot on
Completely agree! I picked this one to send to a friend and said the older version made it much more poignant. To me at least.
Like fine wine, this version is something else. Sublime.

The wine called Cohen's voice/mind had peaked in its maturity and greatness during these years
I love him old or young
Perhaps Leonard's "best" rendition of all versions of this classic. Magnificent.
Many years ago I was in very deep love with a lady. We knew that we would have to part and this was our song. Still touches me today.

That's No Way To Say Goodbye
(Ce N'est Pas La Bonne Façon De Dire Adieu) is a song by Leonard Cohen
I loved you in the morning,
Je t'ai aimée le matin,
Our kisses deep and warm,
Nos baisers profonds et brûlants
Your hair upon the pillow
Ta chevelure sur l'oreiller
Like a sleepy, golden storm,
Comme une tornade d'or ensommeillée
Yes many loved before us,
Oui beaucoup se sont aimés avant nous
I know we are not new,
Je sais que nous ne sommes pas les premiers
In city and in forest
En ville et en forêt
They smiled like me and you,
Ils souriaient comme toi et moi
But now it's come to distances
Mais maintenant nous en sommes arrivés à la froideur
And both of us must try,
Et nous devons tous deux faire des efforts
Your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Tes yeux sont adoucis de chagrin
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
Hey ce n'est pas la bonne façon de dire adieu
I'm not looking for another
Je ne recherche pas quelqu'un d'autre
As I wander in my time,
Alors que j'erre jour après jour
Walk me to the corner,
Accompagne-moi jusqu'au coin de la rue
Our steps will always rhyme
Nos pas s'accorderont toujours
You know my love goes with you
Tu sais mon amour part avec toi
As your love stays with me,
Comme ton amour reste avec moi
It's just the way it changes,
C'est seulement la façon qu'il change
Like the shoreline and the sea,
Comme la limite de la grève et de la mer change avec les marées
But let's not talk of love or chains
Mais ne parlons pas d'amour ou de chaînes
And things we can't untie,
Ou de choses que nous ne pouvons défaire
Your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Tes yeux sont adoucis de chagrin
