We got the NES in '87. Moving up from the boops, beeps, and monochrome green of the Apple IIe was a literal game changer. Poor Worlds of Wonder. They had a strong line up with Teddy Ruxpin, Lazer Tag, and Class Act school accessories, but still couldn't hack it. They went all out with the commercials of the last two, elaborate minute long productions. You've probably seen em. A dystopian cyberpunk future, and every 80's teen movie boiled down into a minute.
In 1986 when I was 9, I was huge into Transformers. I had gone to see the animated movie twice at the theater that summer. That Christmas, I asked for Trypticon, which was a rather large toy in the franchise that turned into a robot, dinosaur, and a battle fortress. It was pretty deluxe for a toy, and I was proud of it. The next day, I went to my best friend Tim's house, which was a tradition where we'd meet up and show each other what we had gotten. He showed me the Nintendo he got the previous day, and suddenly, Trypticon didn't seem quite as awesome. I mean, he could play Super Mario Bros. (which I had fallen in love with at the arcade) whenever he wanted. While Transformers were still cool, nothing could quite top Nintendo after that, and I would get one of my own the following Christmas, along with The Legend of Zelda.
my uncle had the NES before we did! spent a lot of time playing the early stuff with most of the 'black box' lineup and it wasn't until a little later he'd picked up SMB. been hooked on video games ever since!!
I was lucky enough that my divorced dad bought the Nintendo Deluxe set for me for Christmas came with Gyromite and Duck Hunt but man ROB the Robot sucked. I really wanted Super Mario Bros. and being poor I went and got three paper routes to buy all my games.
When the NES launched. R.O.B. was there from the beginning! He was kind of a secret way to get kids interested in the system before they would discover the games! As part of Nintendo’s history and their rocket towards success; he’s more than earned his place in Smash Bros.
Weaver Chicken Tenders- I like how the woman’s dress color is the same color as the box of Weaver Chicken Tenders. Cabbage Patch Kids- Somehow I doubt that family members like grandparents would get excited about their kids adopting Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.
Got my NES from my dad...I don't remember if it was for Christmas or for my Birthday, since they're only about 2 weeks apart. I would also get a Game Boy from him several years later. (Never had R.O.B. though)
Weaver Chicken Breast Tenders-kids in the background"Save us some!!!" Teddy Ruxpin-imagine a Child's Play/MEGAN-type film with Teddy, only that he's actually the hero Burger King Chicken Tenders -keep the couple from the Weaver commercial away from these 😆 Power Wheels Jeep -Kids will be mad just as easily if their parents didnt put it together correctly
I feel like there were teddy ruxpin video tapes in the video rental department at the grocery store in the 80's, I went there yesterday it's not that much different now but no video rental area
Some prime viewing from WNYW here! Maybe I watched the special? But I remember seeing those NES commercials in 1985 it was years later I found we were part of the early test market, how cool was that?

Teddy Ruxpin thinks the world revolves around him!
I love you Rob.
At 1:09 That's the one console that made me a household name.

I saw the 2012 Broadway revival of Edwin Drood, and it was a wonderful production. Would have loved to have seen the original production.
5:01 - "This is a Burger King town"...It sounds like they should be singing this while they kneecap Ronald McDonald...
