My dad bought me a no8 when I was 9 and I have kept it to this day. I modified it a bit (I carved in my initials) and sharpened it from time to time. Imo the best you can have when you are just looking for a simple working knife. I use it for carving, shrooming and preparing food.

Opinel actually has a more extensive line of kitchen, gardening and camping knives as well. These include two models of folding saw, a DIY knife with detachable screwdriver bits, a survival knife with whistle in the handle, a folding vegetable peeler, a corkscrew knife, a garlic & chestnut knife, an oyster knife, a mushroom knife with brush, not to mention all the fixed blade kitchen knives.
And they are all razor sharp right out of the box!
I agree, the only thing they lack is a pocket clip.

The no.8 carbon i bought had a warped blade, it looked like that the logo was stamped so hard thet it bent the blade. and the locking ring would loosen up as soon you would apply any pressure while cutting. I had to do a bunch of work on it just to make it usable. I do like it, it has some really good things going on like weight to blade size ratio and very good slicing abilities if you do light tasks like food prep.

There are aftermarket clips made specifically for Opinels you can get, but most cost as much or more than the knife itself. Or you can DIY a universal one with screws and some epoxy or glue in the holes and on the threads to make it more sturdy.

Inox is French for stainless steel. It’s short for inoxidisable. The original knives were carbon steel. Stainless was introduced in 1986 but took a few years to become common. These days both are widely available. Carbon steel is easier to sharpen and gets incredibly sharp. Stainless is better for food prep and doesn’t rust when it gets wet.

I rotate between a couple of different knives. I have a Kershaw with spring assisted open, but the pocket clip tore up my pants and put holes in my shirts.
I started carrying the Opinel again recently, but in my back pocket instead of side pocket. I like that the blade is thinner, I feel like it's less of a wedge and can cut through tape and things easier. It's lighter to carry but the rounder shape would probably make it a pain if I was sitting in a harder chair. Not sure what the best way to carry these is, don't really like them in the side pocket with keys and other items.

Not a silly question, but perhaps the better question is fixed blade vs folding, cause otherwise it's apples to oranges. For light duty and convenience, folding (Opinel). For medium duty and up, fixed-blade.

I don't know if they make the best knife for the money, but they make a knife with certain features that appeal to certain people. It's not expensive, but price is subjective. Everyone has their own idea of good low price. It's very light weight, well balanced, with a quality blade in either stainless or carbon steel. Some want those features, and some want something else. I like my no. 7, but I have others I like as well

Inox is the short version for "acier inoxydable", i.e. stainless steel. It wouldn't come to any French person's mind to call stainless steel something else as inox. It is pronounced eenox.

the stainless steels ones are not junk, I have one, and it arrived razor sharp out of the box. and you can sharpen stainless steel properly if you take your time . Stainless steel is not garbage. if you know how to sharpen them properly, you can get them crazy sharp like I do with my Japanese kitchen knives. also, Opinel makes their knives in carbon steel as well, which you can sharpen very nicely as well. and you need to practice manual sharpening if you cant get a decent edge on your knives unless you use a mechanical sharpener. I taught myself how to sharpen freehand , and it was one of the best things I did.

acier inoxydable Ay-cee-ay een-oxee-dab-lah. French for stainless steel. Short form is Inox. I own several Opinels, mostly No.8's as I find that to be a very useful pocket size knife. It is one of the very few edc knives I own that has a convex grind on the blade, and yes, it can take a fantastically sharp edge. For the money, there is nothing better.
