Not having an Opinel is like having no toothbrush , it's like the "Telecaster" of knives if you prefer .. I still have my Opinel Carbon number 8 that i modded the same way back in the 90's , adding also a small leather cord at the end of it. Greetings from France
A leather cord would be nice. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely love that you compare this Opinel to the Telecaster; Simple, durable, utilitarian, and absolutely classic.
The Tele is my favorite guitar, maybe that's why I'm so drawn to Opinel?
Your video production really is second to none man, your channel will go very far. Amazing video and mods.
Omg im wathing this cup of u
opinel should hire you, this handle looks way better then original, best!
Beautiful - just bought my first opinel last week. Want to try some of these modifications
Very fun to do
It looks much better. I really like this one. Even to buy it and make it the same as you. Nice job.
Excellent job! Thanks for the inspiration. Love my Opinels!
I've only carried case knives my entire life, but that will soon change...
One of best even though opinel are basic there pieces are awesome
Great job, but I have noticed that it seems the leading purpose for the Opinel's is food prep, will cold bluing the blade like that prevent it from being safe doing food prep work?
Water test will fail. Water protection first - Disassemble, tick oil, and after it do any other mods.
Definitely looks better. Still a lot of work for a knife I'd never carry. Cool project though.
THANK YOU! Excellent ! 👍👍👍
Best music background I've heard in a long time.
Come for knife stay for the blues
gonna do my no.9 also with a little cut out. easy reach for the blade . thanks
Great vid, and great music!!!
I love these guitar riffs! what are these songs called?

The gun blue will wear off. The dark finish will make it easier to lose if dropped into grass longer than ankle depth, there's no practical benefit in making a knife look darker and more "tactical" - unless you're easily impressed by needless negative cosmetics.
Re-profiling the handle's heel I can understand, that's going to be an ergonomic improvement. But the rest of it's just making a nice little cutter look scruffier. Removing the lacquer's okay too, but giving it a linseed oil finish to the beech would have been a better way to take it. The dent in the handle for the nail-groove access, that's okay too.
Ian Gourlay, then I guess Opinel should stop selling their knives with walnut, bubinga, and ebony handles.
Le résultat est bien sympa.
Thats a nice lookin opinel, .
Nearly 2,000 thumbs down. Congrats, that's not easy to do!!
Best knife comes at00:41
How much?!!!? $$$. Lol.
No, seriously. This is awesome
phitausundown I just bought one today for $14
Very nice ....I mean it mate
That was awesome
Thanks!! 👊
Why did you use stripper to take the coating off the handle when you went ahead and sanded it afterwards? Why not just sand it from the beginning and not use any chemicals?
he was probably experimenting just to see how it would look
That looks fantastic ......... I want one!
Looks good
What a waste of an iconic pocket knife. You buy it for what it is!
precismont
Sorry, really don't like the music. Much better to have instructions!
very Nice done buddy
I did one myself a while ago
atb
Steve
Now that's pretty cool..... I like that...
nice work, congrats
how about just dark brown varnish?
The best bit is when he pulled out the retractable utility knife and then just sharpens his pencil.
Work With Nature yep
That gave me a laugh to
Brother had to breathe in a ton of chemicals while he was f******* his beautiful knife up. Give him break.
Dan Prusaitis they’re like 14 bucks. And I think it looks a lot better after he’s done
I like when he used the stripper to take the coating off of the handle. Then go and sand it afterwards. All he had to do was sand it...lol.
I like the idea of making a bit of a hollow in the handle so the blade is easier to open.
Just a heads up folk, that Blue stuff is poisonous, so if you use the knife for cutting apples, I suggest using vinegar, or if you want a pattern, mustard.
Everyone has an idea what they want in a knife and how it should feel in THEIR hand.
Make it so!
That a star Trek TNG reference?
I really love the burning process (yakisugi technique) but I recently saw a boiling technique, in oil. I tried on a couple of my Opinel (sanded before), in linseed oil, 20 minutes, the color is homogeneous, even in the blade slit and around the collar.
Don't boil that shit inside papa, it has a lot of chems in it. Boil it outside on a propane burner or somethin.
super blue isn't food safe suggested by the mfg. you should have taken it apart and just do a heat oxidation.
HOW COULD You PUT WOOD IN A VICE WITH NO SOFT JAWS
hes gonna sand it anyways ... hes not worried about dmging the varnish i guess
How? You didn't see?? Ha
I didn’t see any damage.
I've done it, not really that bad
Opinel owes you big time!
Yeah! I think I will film my indoor DIY the same way. Working with high aperture lens require lot of adjustments and time. But the results worth it I think.
I admit I didn't have much faith by the middle of the video whether it's worth watching all the way, but I have to say both the blade and the wood handle turned out to be simply beautiful.
This is fake ! Shop is too clean to be real. Just kidding man, great job and video !
Loll Big thanks!
dw hunter
lol nicely done
I love the beginning : you've one of the best pencil sharpener on the table and you use... a poor plastic knife 🤣
The background music should be "What a Waste" by Ian Dury
Why?
@@rollothewalker5535 large amount of stripper used for a thin layer of varnish which would have come off when he sanded it later anyway. There was no need to use any stripper let alone that much.
That really looks amazing! Just to get the details straight, you are torching the wood, sanding & staining it, right?
Could you please tell me which wood stain color that is? I really have to try this, thanks for the amazing video!
Can't remember the brand. Look in the video. You will see it!
If I had to guess, it would be oxblood leather dye. Feibings is easy to find.
all that paint stripper poured out just to put a small dab on a brush
Especially since he could have sanded off the finish in less time than it took to make the foil pan... 😁
I've only carried case knives my entire life, but that will soon change...
A piece of cloth in vice please......Naughty step for you
😮😮😮🤔😃👍👍👍
😱😱😱😱you destroy a opinel my country!!!no great job😁make opinel for oyster now !!Nice Christmas
if you cook the handle in oil you waterproof it, darken it and you don't need the paint stripper...
I've been watching a lot of opinel knife videos and this one just ads to my collection of videos haha
only one criticism, and its just a personal preference, the colour and look of the beech handle was destroyed by scorching it, in my opinion, beech is a beautiful hardwood, and requires no treatment other than tung oil or varnish to enhance its natural beauty, but other than that a good job we,l done,
Why use stripper chemical? Can't just use sand paper? Way too much money spent on chemicals and such... Although I am a huge fan of pine tar.. I was hoping to see it.
Gorgeous mod. But once u blue the blade it’s not food safe anymore 🤷♂️
@crackpipe88 your comment is stupid, maybe u can explain why?
@crackpipe88
That will just be your little
secret, then. I ONLY use
carbon steel knives, including
to eat with. Just turned 59 last
week, no problem. By the way,
many butchers AND chefs will
only use carbon steel. If it was a
problem, insurance wouldn't allow it
@crackpipe88 why not?
R Carrion you can also blue carbon blades with Apple cider vinegar so its food safe
Is exact. This knife is not good for eating. You have the opinel inox .
🙂🙂🙂Beautiful, but if still how to make a bamboo !!👍👍👍Hello from Ukraine!
These knives are so fun to personalize and make it your own. The carbon blades take a wicked edge. I own several and they all have a special significance. I thought of fashioning a deer antler for a handle. Maybe I will try that next. Awesome knives!
excellent work, don't know if I'd put that much effort into an Opinel
What did you use on the handle after you burnt it?
So now you can sell the $9 knife for $189 ;) What's up with the Granddad music??
The music is awesome! The blues..
you WISH your grand-dad
listened to music this good 😎
You took an iconic piece of design and turned it into shit. Congratulations.
I am a woodworker by training and I was impressed that you used a rasp, that is a tool that so many guys either never get or if they have one they almost never use.
I have more control with this tool. A sander is overkill for a job like this! Thanks for the comment!
In my humble opinion no woodworker's shop is complete without a few rasps, including a quality cabinet maker's rasp.
Vietnam
Triste pour les couteaux macron
I like. I'm going to mod mine with a couple of these ideas.
Dude i tool a swig of my beer almost at the exact same time 🤣🤣🤣
Another perfectly good knife knackered up
Very nice 👍🏻 knife, better music 🎶, please post where to get the music
Travail de goret….
Une lame peut se démonter….
Superb. Great work, a lovely personalised Opinel. 👍👍
Monty Montgomery And that's what's it about mate.Theres a lot of negative idiots on here.
Awesome video, I would love to see something similar with the cold steel pipe hawk!
Found your channel while researching Opinel mods. Great video. Great channel. You’ve got a lot of interesting content. Sub’d.
I’ve known about Opinel knives since I was a kid, but I was always a huge Swiss Army Knife fan - thanks to MacGyver. These days, I’ve been interested in collecting a few of the iconic, legendary blades: the Ka-Bar USMC, Buck, Case pocket knives, Victorinox Swiss Army Knives, and last but not least, Opinel.
Knives like Opinel, that have been around as long as dirt, and remain popular throughout the world, have such an enviable status for a reason: they handle the tasks for which they were designed, and they do it with panache. However, the Opinel knives have one extra feature that most knives lack: because of how they are designed, and that wooden handle, they quite naturally lend themselves to the owner making modifications and adding a bit of flair and personalization.
Great video. I’ll have to modify my NO. 9 soon.
Nice job! I'm definitely trying this with my No.8 👌👍
It is very fun to do!
Now it looks old and been rolling around in the bottom of a truck mechanics tool box... 😁
Music please ,the song.
From france
Nice job! Have to say I'm a little envious of you workshop!
It's more like a garage than a workshop
Great video. Sometimes frustrating that we can't see the product you're using. What was that you put on the locking collar?
ColeSlaw580 black spray paint I believe
Awesome job!
Why the fuck is the music so loud!
Obviously not because you turned up the volume...
I was channel hoping, and the intro ,blew my buds out. The volume until then was fine. You must all be deaf.
Billy Black Agreed. Nice video, but that was obnoxiously loud.
Gorgeous rustic treatment and awesome vid. One question - what was the tool you used to apply focused spray paint to the locking collar? Looks like a space age Dunhill lighter...
objectionform I think that’s what it was, a lighter. I presume he burned the wood, not painted it
che spettacolo, bellissima modifica.
I have a No. 6 Carbone with beech handle. I coated the handle with olive oil and baked it in the oven. It came out looking like walnut but with less prominent grain.
Nice!!
Awesome job, man! You've earned yourself a new subscriber :)
Tanto trabajo y yo la tiraba a la basura
Looks awesome! My son and I did mustard tiger stripe patina on one today. This gives me new ideas. I would like to try some file work on the spine.
Have fun. Thanks for watching!
Great rhythm great knife mod.! 👌
Great looking knife! I just ordered my first Opinel, should be here tomorrow!
Very pretty. Nice workstation!
Yes! very good for DIY projects
