Yes I have memory of buying my first Opinel. My wife and I were on vacation in a small port city on the Olympia Peninsula here in Washington called Port Townsend. I can never pass up an outdoor store without going in. In the case was a banana shaped knife like nothing I had ever seen before. It was an old style Opinel #9. The price was only $10 back then. I was hooked when I carved a butter knife that night at camp. It came razor sharp. Thanks for asking for a memory. I hadn’t thought about it for ages. I still have it today. 🎸🔪

Great job, buddy! This Opinel is probably about 60 years old, since it does not have a viroblock (and on the blade of the knife you can see a mark corresponding to that time). I have an Opinel of about the same age (and with the same mark on the blade) only I have an Opinel No. 9. My Opinel has its own story, its owner is an elderly Italian. He gave this knife to my friend, and he in turn gave it to me . Just like you, I cleaned and sharpened it and still use this knife. Thanks for the video and your work!
Dear friend thank you for sharing this beautiful work with us. Nothing is better then having an evening coffee while watching an oldschool work. I'm a big fan of opinels. I carry one around with me all the time, in the car, at the office and so on. I've bought several at garage sales. You can easily find them for 2 euros or less each. Very nice restoration work. When I get the courage, I might restore one or two... To carry it without losing it, the end was pierced to put a string around the neck.

Thank you kindly for your thoughtful comment sir! I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the video and appreciated the little touch with the piece of wood in the handle. Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite type of knife or a unique customization you've come across that stands out to you?
excellent work as usual, rescued a much abused and forgotten knife and turned it into what it was before and made a really useful every day carry knife, a peasant knife back to how it should be and being used as intended is really cool, and a very tidy repair on the wood of the handle, and the French lady would be very happy to see what you have done with the old knife

I lost my father almost a year ago and i inherited his tools. Most of them were passed down to him from my great grandfather making me the fourth generation to own them. They all hold a special place in my heart. I've restored a lot of them but i have a lot more to go. These are the tools my father taught me to use when I was a kid in the 70s so they all hold a lot of sentimental value to me but my favorite has to be a colonial (1590-1700) era 5th foot Bladesmith hornless anvil that has been in my family since it was new and all the men in my dads side of the family have used it. I can only imagine the stories it could tell after being on this earth for around 400 years. I am truly honored to have it to pass down to the next generation.

I like leather work of all kinds. I’ve done quite a bit of it over the years. I’m part Native American, so my favorite style of knife sheath would be Native American Woodlands style. They are usually fringed and sometimes beaded or quilled, and the knife slides almost completely inside the sheath, with only a small part of the pommel exposed. This is so it is not likely to be lost while hunting.🤗🐝❤️
Thank you kindly for your encouraging words! Opinel knives do have a timeless charm, don't they? Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite model or series among the Opinel collection?
@@FFD_Restorations My Opinel preferences are pretty mundane. I prefer carbon steel blades in size Nos. 8 & 9 - their most popular sizes. Years ago I was able to purchase one in each size that had been modified by replacing the wood handles with stag. I also own a No. 8 that was manufactured by Opinel with different types of wool laminated together to form the handle, I plan on replacing the stainless blade on that knife with a carbon blade. I also like their No. 12 folding saw. Which models do you like best?

¡Muchas gracias! ¡Aprecio tu aporte!
Now all opinel got that safety ring, it's very specific from that brand (copyright i think) it's funny to see that they not always get it :) nice job, from France !
Thank you kindly for noticing the unique safety ring on the Opinel! It does add a special touch, doesn't it? 😄 Your observation skills are on point! It was patented and introduced in 1955. If you see a knife without a safety ring it means it is produced before 1955. By the way, have you come across any other interesting knife features that caught your eye recently? Always curious to hear from fellow enthusiasts! Cheers from Norway
@@FFD_Restorations On that picture at 0:17 did the last knife on the right got something like a bee on it ? I'm not a specialist at all but the knife on that picture looks like Opinel knife, and the last one... could be similar too an other french brand of knife named Laguiole, and bee is the logo of that brand (but there is no copyright on that name or on that logo, so there is a lot of "Laguiole" made in China ;)). If someday you're go again in France, i suggest you to visit "Thiers" it's the city of knife maker ;)
Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate your keen observation. You're correct, the absence of a locking ring on the knife is sign of its age. It's fascinating how designs and features evolve over time. Do you have any favorite vintage tools or knives?
I have a lot of restored vintage tools in my workshop, too many to have a favorite. The Opinel No.7 is one of my favorite knives, I will have to look for one that needs restoration. Thanks.
Nicely restored and great job with the leather sheath in a short time. I have never before seen an Opinel without the collar lock, any idea when Opinel introduced that in their design?
Thank you kindly! My belt grinder and I make quite the dynamic duo. 😄 By the way, have you tried any unique tools or gadgets lately that brought unexpected joy to your day?
Fun fact: The Virobloc (locking ring) was invented in 1955, meaning the one you restored (amazingly I must add) should be among the last to not be equipped with it.

Beautiful knife and great restoration! I love knives too!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the knife restoration. Knives are fascinating, aren't they? Do you have a favorite type or style of knife that you particularly appreciate?
@@FFD_Restorations Thank you Boris! I have a lot of modern fixed blade and especially folding knives but vintage Sheffield made knives have become my favourites lately.:) Sheepfoot blade is my favourite type of blade. 👍😊
Thank you for the great videos! I love your workshop!
A great restoration! I like the sheath you made, too!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled you enjoyed the restoration and the sheath. Your appreciation means a lot 😃👍

Looks great!
Dobra jakość wykonania 👍👍👍
beautiful result!
Thank you kindly! Your compliment just made my day brighter! Cheers!
Very nice job on the knife and a beautiful workshop👍🏻❤️🔥✨🔨
Thank you kindly for your kind words! I appreciate your positive feedback. I'm glad you liked the knife and the workshop setup. Is there a specific aspect of the process or design that caught your interest? 🔪🛠️
Opinel's just get better with age and use, that was brilliant 🎉 got me thinking about whether I should clean mine up or leave it with life marks.😊
Thank you! Opinel's do have a way of gaining character over time, don't they? 😊 What's your take on maintaining the pristine look versus embracing the well-earned life marks on your knives?
wonderful
Many thanks
fantastic sheath friend, I have made 2 for my opies but I like yours more! Opinel is my preferred steak knife, eat out like a gentleman!
Now you have the nicest opinel in the world.
Bravissimo.
Muy bueno,me gustó mucho
Great job ! bon travail ;)
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate your encouragement. Merci beaucoup 🤗
great video
Thanks!
Hi!! Nice restoration, really clean. My Hobbie is also restoring old rusty staff... I finished my first Opinel (6) two weeks ago.
Nice work. I notice that there was no locking ring on this knife, maybe because it as so old?
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your kind words. Collar lock was my touch, personal preference ☺️
I love your belt grinder ! 😂
Thank you kindly! My belt grinder and I make quite the dynamic duo. 😄 By the way, have you tried any unique tools or gadgets lately that brought unexpected joy to your day?
Nice sweater
Nice!
Rusty wood without any deformation. What can be more realistic!
Ah se me olvidaba...BUEN TRABAJO CON LA NAVAJA👍
😀👍
372.72 DKK no wonder the old lady was happy to see you!
Fun fact: The Virobloc (locking ring) was invented in 1955, meaning the one you restored (amazingly I must add) should be among the last to not be equipped with it.
❤ very nice video ❤
Thank you 🤗
I think is folded but perfect for scout kids
Teeth are the best knives for apples 💪
Very interesting video. Subscribed 😊
What do you usually do with your knives? Sell them?
Thank you for your comment! I appreciate your curiosity. I actually don't sell my knives; I mainly use them for cooking and other household tasks.
good job!
Thank you kindly for your encouraging words! I appreciate your support!
I’ve used coffee to darken wood slightly to match new patches to older and more worn wood.
Thank you for sharing that interesting technique! I appreciate the creative approach to matching wood tones. I will keep that in mind for the next time!
¿Este tipo de navaja no tiene resorte?
¡Gracias por su pregunta! Agradezco tu curiosidad.
👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). But Sir, please nevertheless kindly allow me to tell you, that plastic end caps on the special vice is definitely a no go in your fantastic, period correct workshop! 😁 ;-) Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
Thank you kindly for your encouraging words and suggestion.
Dear @@FFD_Restorations
You're welcome, it's my pleasure. Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart to my comment. I totally appreciate both very much. Wait a minute! I didn't get a heart. So it seems that my comment wasn't worth one, sigh.
Que bueno
The Opinel is the most popular pocket knife in France. Every drafted soldier or boy scout once owned one. The carbon steel blade is very good.
According to me it is forbidden to carry a locking knife in France.
Thank you kindly for sharing that interesting tidbit about the Opinel! I appreciate the insight. By the way, what is your favorite Opinel model?
Good morning sir ❤ ☕
