I’m an American 🇺🇸 I have knives ranging from $20 to $450. My collection is probably worth $4,000. Oddly, all summer long I carry a Opinel 7. In warmer weather, I wear shorts and linen pants. I don’t want a heavy knife, nor do I want a pocket clip. It’s crazy that I have expensive fancy out-the-front automatics and still opt for the Opinel 7. 😂 I love it. Friends make fun of me but they just don’t get it. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I got my first Opinel in 1982, a number 8 that was in a backpacking store. I became a converted Opinel fanatic. Carried that number 8 up to the late 90's, when I downsized to a number 6. The number 6 was in use up to about 2005 when I started to develop an appreciation of the number 4 and 5 non locking Opinel's in my love of all things retro, like black powder rifles and traditional archery. These days the number 5 is my most carried pocket knife. It's so light I can carry it in my shirt pocket and not notice it. And like all Opinel's, it cuts like the dickens!

That was awesome, George. Great imagination and mods. I've never seen so many kinds of Opinel ideas. BTW, if you want to harden leather, melt a good amount of beeswax in it with a hairdryer or a heatgun. (You can put the whole sheath in melted beeswax, too, but then the wax gets inside the sheath, and it's difficult to clean it out)

A Finn here. The handle of a "puukko" is oval in cross section to properly index in the hand, not round like a broom handle. Also the blade is thicker than that of an Opinel and sharpened differently making it much stiffer and more durable against bending and chipping. "Puu" means "wood" in Finnish, "puukko", even though it is regularly used as a general purpose knife, is primarily designed for whittling and even splitting wood.

@@2ndchancegeorge No problem, I have an Opinel No7 and I like it, I'm thinking maybe gettin another bigger one, maybe a 9 or 10 as I too have big hands and find the handle of the 7 too small. But as said, the blade grind of opinel is thin, full width hollow ground one, almost like a straight razor. Excellent for razor-like slicing sharpness but not very tolerant of abuse like twisting or bending in which a "puukko" exels as the blade is fairly sturdy and has a tang going all the way through the handle and traditionally riveted at the other end to ensure the blade stays in place.
By the way, there are probably dozens of styles of traditional "puukko", every area of Finland had their own. Some have just an oval handle, some have a small, usually one-sided guard and some have a pommel. The guard and pommel can be shaped from the same material as the rest of the handle or they can be made of metal like brass. The handle can be made of wood (usually birch, often a piece with curly grain was selected which leads to calling the knife "visapää", literaly "curly head"), stacked discs of leather or birch bark, bone or horn.
There are also many styles of sheaths, often full lenght ones, covering both the blade and the handle (or at least about half of the handle like yours) for secure retention when worn on the belt. Sheaths were made of leather, birch bark or later even metal, especially on ones made by soldiers in the trenches during WW2 who had access to aluminium from downed aeroplanes, and there's usually a wooden insert inside the sheath to protect it from the blade. There are also models where there are two similar knives, one small, one large, in one sheath.
Of course nowadays both the handle and the sheath on "puukko" meant to be used as cheap, everyday heavy duty tools by workers are made of plastic. But those are usually very cheap and considered disposable while traditional models can be quite expensive, especially if hand-forged.
Sorry about the long text but we Finns are kind of proud of our traditional knives. So are the French about the Opinel, no doubt.:)

Blade shape ideas could be a spear point or a chisel point. Chisel point would be good around the shop when you are modding your next one. Good source for leather is Weaver Leather or your local Tandy Leather. And, regarding carbon versus stainless, I prefer carbon as it is easier to sharpen in the field and I think it holds an edge as good as the stainless if the heat treat is done right. I have carbone and inox Opinels and both hold an edge great for me. Most of my outdoors fixed blades are all carbon. Great video and loved the comparison of the different models and mods.

I got my first opinel long ago as a gift, was a number 7 in Carbon. I bought an Inox 10 or 11 for as a camp cooking knife since chopping onions and such are not great with a Mora scandi grind.
Also have a Higo no kami and a few other oddballs. Sweden, Japan, France, US, and I'm sure there's at least one Chinese knife around here. Spoiled for good knives, but I need one made in Canada, so I've been meaning to make one much like the Opinel slipjoint as well as fixed blade at one point. Done my research on metallurgy so I can do a good heat treatment, maybe even better than mass production inexpensive knives. Just going to spend a lot of time with a file, no forging right off the bat.

I bought three opinels. One was the standard #8, the others were the fish knife and the Serpette. Loved them all but 2 things will always bug me about them. First is the perennial sticky blade issue that you mention. The other is how the lock ring looks and feels so cheap and tinny. I gave all mine away, but if I ever buy another Opinel, the first thing I'll do is cover the ring with either eel skin or book-binding leather, or maybe a tinted epoxy. Tried gun bluing but it didn't work. Can't imagine why Opinel doesn't just powder-coat them all.

Interesting video. I bought an Opinel carbon probably no. 8, in the early 90’s in Montana or Wyoming as a souvenir. I had it for a number of years, but I’m not sure where it went. I probably sold it or traded it off many years ago. I would like to see a modern version of this knife made with a black G10 handle, and the lock mechanism made from titanium or anodized aluminum that is loaded with a spring that automatically rotates to the locked position when the blade is open. The spring tension would be strong enough to automatically engage and stay engaged, but light enough to easily close.

I have several Opinels, some are stainless but I don't really use them, carbon is the honest Opinel with me. My first Opinel has the "fishtail" handle, now as soon as I saw they had a locking closed ring, I took off my ring and cut my own notch in the ring. Most of mine are #8, I have a few #6 but #8 is standard for me. I have a few $10 and made a belt sheath for one.

Sadly, we in the UK can't legally carry our Opinels in a public place without a very good reason, as they can be locked open. I'm wondering whether to buy a No.7 (we also have a maximum blade length of three inches) and try to drill through the Virobloc so I can pin it in place, thus permanently disabling the lock.
