You can tell how much Quentin loved The Thing when you realize that in a lot of ways his movie The Hateful Eight is an homage to it. They both involve being trapped inside an enclosed place because of the cold, build a sense of paranoia because the main characters realize that some of the other characters are hiding their true agendas and identities, and even both star Kurt Russell and have a musical score by Ennio Moricane.
That must have been a real mind blow to catch it when it was new. I got to see Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park in theater and obviously these movies were on another level. But The Thing was a horror movie on another level.
Right there with you. I was 21 and in college when this came out. It was the same day that E.T. opened and everyone was going to see fucking E.T. I went to see The Thing. When I walked out of the theater I thought "that may be the greatest horror film every made." I still feel that way today. It was 30 years before I saw E.T. and I barely remember what happens in it. I can remember every goddamn scene of the The Thing.

One of the greatest movies ever made. Caught it on TV in the 80s was totally shocked to read later that it wasn't a critical success when it was first released. It's an absolute classic.
Genre movies always face an uphill battle, because the public at large is predisposed to think of them as goofy. And the fact that it doesn't have a typical feel-good story alienates (no pun intended) a large part of the audience as well. By the time word of mouth brings in people in large numbers, it's often mostly reflected in rental numbers.

John Carpenters The Thing is perhaps one of the greatest horror/scary/suspense movies of all time. Why? Because I had to add those slashes. Your getting so many aspects, coupled with those fabulous practical effects. My son, who is 15, dared me to show him a scary movie from the 80's that was worthy. This was my choice and afterward, he was in awe. Score one for Dad!!
I know Tarantino has also said that Hateful Eight was really inspired by The Thing too. The trapped in the room, paranoia, etc. It’s amazing to think that this movie inspired the spirit for at least two of Tarantino’s nine movies. I saw the thing about 22 years ago, but only in the last few years did I realize it’s part of John carpenters, apocalypse trilogy. Anyone who’s into the thing should check out the other two flicks. Frankly, I don’t think they’re as good overall, but they at least have moments of excellence.
When Quentin used a cut piece of The Thing's score in The Hateful Eight (which was more Ennio Morricone) when the characters are outside, hammering the metal rods to make a line in the snow, there was a part of me that almost wished I was watching a flat-out horror movie. As far as the trilogy goes, I adore "They Live" and "Prince of Darkness" is a good creepy slow burn.
"In the Mouth of Madness" is so creepy. I love John Carpenter's movies, just from the opening synth music to the title and the atmosphere, before even the title appears on the screen, makes me feel so good!
@@ScornedScallopes Agree, that film is almost 40 years old, and those practical effects still look amazing after all the years. An American Werewolf in London was probably one the first horror films that actually scared me because with other horror movies like Halloween (1978) and The Shining (1980) I at least know what I am getting into but with An American Werewolf in London I didn't know what I was getting into because it directed by John Landis who is mostly known for his comedy films like National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) and Blues Brothers (1980) and with that knowledge I assume it was comedy film but that was not the case at all. Just the scene alone where he is out killing people in London during the night is just so terrifying to me. This film is also very important to the horror genre since this film is practically the reason why Evil Dead 1 & 2 and Cabin in the Woods even exists.
Hearing two masters of cinema talk about a cinematic masterpiece is quite cool. Quentin Tarantino also used some of Ennio Morricone's unused "the thing" score for Hateful Eight, mainly the poison coffee scene.
I think you meant "hommage" and he already did it with The Hateful Eight, even if it wasnt horror he clearly tried to replicate The Thing in a western setting
This is such an accomplished film, masterful in many ways, the acting, the filming and shot choices, the practical effects, etc, etc. It's one of those films which works in every way, I've yet to find anyone who has ever seen it who says they dislike it.
I grew up with this movie. When I was a little kid, I'd go stay with my Dad on weekends, and he'd let me watch whatever I wanted - and he had HBO. In my mind, The Thing was on a lot, and I'd watch it every time. It's this movie and Creepshow are the movies that not only made me a horror fan, but just a fan of movies in general. This movie has one of the greatest scores of all time too. Something about that snowy landscape and the thumping of the music instantly sets the tone of the whole movie. And the title burns into the screen - it's maybe the most awesome thing ever.
I went from watching horror movies late night on HBO to spending an hour staring at VHS cover art in the horror section at my local rental place. Life in the 80s was awesome for a young horror fan.
I saw this in the theater when I was about 11, and it made me feel as paranoid as anytime I thought there was a monster under my bed when I was younger. Just flat out: "no one is getting out of here alive". And I laughed through the gore; it was the only way I could process it. It warped my fragile little mind, and I'm thankful for it. Awesome movie.
It’s crazy how timeless it is. I was born in 83 and didn’t experience it til I saw it at home in the late 80s. Dad had the VHS. It’s a masterpiece in its own right and that soundtrack. Still gives me the chills. The 4K remaster looks great. I recommend it.
My favorite movie of all time. I can totally see now how Quentin was inspired by it with Reservoir Dogs. No idea if Carpenter would be happy to hear that, that man is brutally honest and notoriously hard to please haha.
That I don't know but Ennio Morricone who wrote music for The Thing hated Tarantino or at least his movies...called them bad shit :D That really must hurt, since Tarantino absolutely admires Morricone's work.
Im a fan of both as an Alaskan Native and a resident of Anchorage Alaska . Parents would laugh every time someone yelled " Close the door ! " in the Howard Hawks version . I thought John Carpenter's version would be a big hit when I saw it in the theater . It was over half full and everyone seemed to think it was at least OK . I thought it was a classic like Bladerunner .
i love how Quentin Tarantino is not just like "yeah, that movie scared me!" - no! he needs to dive into the feeling and has to find out WHAT exactly was it, that scared him, and only so you really understand the emotion created and how to bring it across.
I saw The Thing on opening weekend and loved it! Bought it on VHS as soon as it was available and introduced it to family and friends. Now have it on DVD and watch it every year.
I saw The Thing (1982) at the movie theater when I was 15 with like 5 of my friends. We had to walk home afterwards because our ride home ditched us. It was about a 15 mile walk in Southern California through the suburbs at night. We were all freaked out and seriously scared. The walk home had neighborhoods and fields as well as industrial parks. We felt like The Warriors (another great movie) boppin our way all the way back home.
You are both clearly objectively wrong. Jaws is the greatest horror movie of all time. Making some people in a theater scared is childs play compared to scaring an entire country out of the water.

Of all the movies I have watched this is the one I watched the most and for some reason I keep watching it whenever I get a chance. I'm 49 and this is by far the best in its genre.
My local independent cinema is showing The Thing this coming Monday and Tuesday in time for Halloween… can’t wait to see it again on the big screen!! One of the greats
People can indeed have their own personal reasons for enjoying horror films and John Carpenter's The Thing can still give us all plenty of freedom in that regard. It was my second viewing, thanks to my dad renting it for me on VHS, that made me one of its biggest fans.
I literally nearly pooped my pants with terror when seeing this double diamond mint classic. I was only 16 and was shocked when that dog head splitt. I had no idea what I was in for and as Quentin quite rightly said… the paranoia and tension just leapt out of the screen and grabbed me by the balls. Only Alien freaked me out as much as this did and despite initial bad reviews it’s now firmly planted as a cult classic and one of the best movies ever made.
Yes. I think more than any other scene, the dog splitting and transformation messed me up as a kid. The head stretching off scene didn't help my already damaged psyche either.
Carpenter's "The Thing" is absolutely one of my guilty pleasures. It's cool how Tarantino has this ability to immerse himself in a film. Puzzled why Bruce Campbell got teamed up with him in this clip because I don't think he's ever been cast in a Tarantino film and he does get around. Peace.
If you get a chance to view a rescreen of "The Thing," do whatever you can to see it. All these elements that QT speaks of are magnified ten fold. I first saw "The Thing," as a kid in 98, and since 2018, I've managed to catch 4 rescreens. It's definitely a theater movie, VHS, DVD, Television, and Bluray doesn't do enough justice. More so, the last time I saw it, I took my 15 year old daughter to see it in a packed house, there were only 3 seats left, and to my surprise, she thought it was better than she anticipated. So, go see it however you can in theaters. Definitely worth it, and I'll keep giving John Carpenter my money to see it each chance I get.
I saw it back in the summer at a theater. It was packed. And it was my first time seeing it at the theater. Most of the people there had seen it, but there was a group of 20 something year olds who hadn't. The kennel, the defibrillator, the blood test all got great reactions out of them and made that screening so much fun. Hearing them in the lobby afterwards talk about how much they loved it was the cherry on top. The Thing and Alien are movies I feel everyone should try to watch in a theater at least once.
@@alanguillermo3145 As a lifelong fan of Alien, I got to see it in theaters when they came out with the upgraded 9-disc box set collection back around 2003 and it was AWESOME. I really need to do the same for The Thing.

The thing is a perfect horror movie...... I can't think of a flaw. Good characters, writing, characterization, suspense, mystery, cliffhanger, thriller, horror, etc...
I was 21 in early 1983 visiting my parents in Madrid, Spain. They lived in a US military community (my Dad was Air Force) on the outskirts of Madrid. A group of my parent's friends got together to play Pinochle. They asked me to take the kids (all under 16) to see The Thing that had just arrived at the military theater. After the movie I had to escort them all back to their homes, and I had to walk home alone. I jumped at every noise. What a great night.
This is why I say no art is made without the processing of other art, even when you'd never think it. I do love the fact The Thing inspired Reservoir Dogs.
What works so well in this movie is the isolation. It reminds me of Alien. It really feels like they are all alone with no one else around. It's something lost in today's movies because of production values and living in such a connected world.

I saw the movie at a drive -in when it first came out, and I just watched it the other night, and it still holds up. I totally get the paranoia Quentin was talking about, it still gives me goosebumps.
Watched it again 2 nights ago. Never will forget seeing it late on a movie channel with my best friend in 1983. Our jaws dropped, both felt we had witnessed cinematic greatness. Beyond frightened, yet so intrigued and apparently I still carry this film with me. It’s a near perfect film. Still holds up today & still so compelling. Was perfectly cast as well . I see something I missed, each new time watching, or dialogue I hadn’t heard. Brilliant. Original is excellent too as with The Fly and Invasion of the body snatchers. Those remakes were also excellent. John Carpenter’s The Thing however is an anomaly
I saw The Thing at the drive in. I was just a kid and I do feel privelaged to be able to say that. Being trapped in a car with my mother and brother with that little speaker hanging off the window was some next level memory making. Not everyone can say they watched the greatest scifi horror movie at the drive in.
It's good to hear them both put in a good word for the Hawks version as well. Like Tarantino, I love them both, but I'm recent years the Hawks film has become so overshadowed by the Carpenter film that it's due for appraisal of its own. Where does the Campbell audio come from? I'd like to listen to that.
@@Reb3nga Not just the CGI. I could forgive the CGI maybe. Some of it was pretty good (some not so much). But even aside from the effects it's such a mediocre nothing of a film. It's just flat and dull with non of the mastery that Carpenter brough to his movie. I stumbled across a youtuber called Morbid Zoo who summed up the failings of the prequel really well. Check that out- she actually drew my attention to a bunch of stuff I'd missed in the Carpenter film, despite seeing it a million times.
Having quentin gush about the thing is just the perfect combination. And I say that as someone who likes quentin better as a movie critic than as a moviemaker
@0:15 I heard on Oliver Harper's recent Thing Retrospective YT video - that the dog kennel was partly Stan Winston's work - he gets a "special thanks" in the final credits.
This was the one movie that scared me on a different level to anything else, and as crazy and grotesque as the monster is, its absolutely the relentless paranoia that when you put yourself in the place of the characters you just cant handle the stress of the situation, when you can't trust anyone a dog can always be trusted and this movie even stripped that from you.
One of the best horror movies ever. Great suspense, awesome effects, great cast that made it appear they weren't acting, like they were those people. I am not a horror movie fan, as a rule, but this is a favorite.
Obviously an amazing movie from all angels and I think the soundtrack really brings everything together. That just beautiful suspenseful music pounding in the back ground like a heart driving up anxiety.
You do realize it is taken almost verbatim from a 1938 novella called "Who Goes There?" By John Campbell. Just transform square 30s dialog to edgier 70s dialog, add some good monster effects, and you're there. They literally didn't touch the characters and the essence of the dialog: they even kept character names and physical descriptions.
"The Thing" is fantastic, but for Halloween I always watch "Pumpkinhead". The plot and characters are great......that old witch in the cabin is the creepiest EVER.....plus you get a bad-a$$ monster.
When I saw the trailers from this movie I was psyched to see it. The week it premiered, I got sent away for work for 3 weeks and when I returned, it had pretty much disappeared from the theaters. It got such a horrible because of the graphic violence and was totally overwhelmed by "ET" which also premiered then. The first time I actually saw it was on HBO and since then I've probably watched it at least a hundred times. It's one of those movies (like Pulp), that if you see it running on TV, no matter where you drop in, you watch.
Is that Pulp as in Pulp fiction or Pulp the Michael Caine movie. I am guessing it is for the Tarantino movie but the Michael Caine one used to be on tv a fair amount as well :)

And after watching it a hundred times+ reviews and reactions from filmmakers, it was this video that showed me why I love this film so much. Must be the establishing shots of the polar station and the introduction of the characters, the idea of being far away from civilization and its (!) madness.

You got to love the Modern Era. We have artist in recordings talking about other pieces. Imagine having Vango or Michelangelo just shooting the shit talking about other artist’s pieces.
Howard Hawks The Thing still reigns supreme in my book. The dialogue, the natural banter, the claustrophobia all add up to make it one of the best sci-fi movies ever. My dad was an editor and he'd have studio people over for poker games and James Arness would show up, stand in our porch, grab the overhead roof and shake it, scaring my mom as he yelled out her name.
When it first came out I went to see the thing with a good friend. We were so freaked out that when we left the theater we said we are never seeing that movie again. That lasted until the next night.
The next time you watch The Thing, really listen to the dialogue. I mean totally soak it in. It's as close to true Lovecraftian horror as you will find on film. Fuchs says (quoting Blair s notes) it could have imitated a million different lifeforms on a million different worlds. And it could take any of those forms at any time. Think about that. A nearly endless array of threats. Such epic level of horror. I would love to see The Thing itself fleshed out (no pun intended) in a tastefully done manner at some point.
The blood test scene, when (spoiler spoiler) the alien blood actually jumps out of the dish- you are completely frozen with anticipation/dread at that point. That is pure movie magic.
Quentin Tarantino's spot on. John Carpenter's The Thing is my all time favourite horror film because of all that incredibly done suspense leading to such powerful tension. It taps straight into that thing which is ingrained in pretty much every Human Being - Fear of the unknown. It's like when Macready is recoding his tape entry "Nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired...".
The Thing stands the test of time as a phenomenal movie. It had excellent special effects for ANY era and I would consider it to be the best special effects in a horror film ever done. What they did in this movie with the alien was so incredibly well done that at no point did you question the validity or realism of the situation at hand.
Hateful 8 is very much inspired by The Thing as well. Including having Ennio score the movie, using unused parts from the Thing soundtrack at the end of Hateful 8.
You know a person really means what they say and aren't just saying it to paint an image of themselves as cultured when they don't use the word "masterpiece" to describe what they love. They just love this flick and I do too. It's a great chunk of film.
I played the OG Xbox game The Thing before I'd seen the movie (great game btw). Watched the movie not long after and it has remained probably in my top 5 favorite films. Undoubtedly my favorite horror film of all-time.
Im with Quentin, its one of the best movies ever made, not just the best horror movie. 40 years later people are still analyzing it.

An American Werewolf in London was probably one the first horror films that actually scared me because with other horror movies like Halloween (1978) and The Shining (1980) I at least know what I am getting into but with An American Werewolf in London I didn't know what I was getting into because it directed by John Landis who is mostly known for his comedy films like National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) and Blues Brothers (1980) and with that knowledge I assume it was comedy film but that was not the case at all.
Just the scene alone where he is out killing people in London during the night is just so terrifying to me.
This film is also very important to the horror genre since this film is practically the reason why Evil Dead 1 & 2 and Cabin in the Woods even exists.
Hearing two masters of cinema talk about a cinematic masterpiece is quite cool. Quentin Tarantino also used some of Ennio Morricone's unused "the thing" score for Hateful Eight, mainly the poison coffee scene.
I think Tarintinos final movie should be a horror movie. His homemade to old school horror like the Thing.

This is such an accomplished film, masterful in many ways, the acting, the filming and shot choices, the practical effects, etc, etc. It's one of those films which works in every way, I've yet to find anyone who has ever seen it who says they dislike it.
John Carpenter’s The Thing is definitely my favourite all-time horror film
I grew up with this movie. When I was a little kid, I'd go stay with my Dad on weekends, and he'd let me watch whatever I wanted - and he had HBO. In my mind, The Thing was on a lot, and I'd watch it every time. It's this movie and Creepshow are the movies that not only made me a horror fan, but just a fan of movies in general. This movie has one of the greatest scores of all time too. Something about that snowy landscape and the thumping of the music instantly sets the tone of the whole movie. And the title burns into the screen - it's maybe the most awesome thing ever.
I went from watching horror movies late night on HBO to spending an hour staring at VHS cover art in the horror section at my local rental place. Life in the 80s was awesome for a young horror fan.

I saw this in the theater when I was about 11, and it made me feel as paranoid as anytime I thought there was a monster under my bed when I was younger. Just flat out: "no one is getting out of here alive". And I laughed through the gore; it was the only way I could process it. It warped my fragile little mind, and I'm thankful for it. Awesome movie.
I saw the movie in theater back in 1982. It’s still one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it with my mom, two brothers and sister.
It’s crazy how timeless it is. I was born in 83 and didn’t experience it til I saw it at home in the late 80s. Dad had the VHS. It’s a masterpiece in its own right and that soundtrack. Still gives me the chills. The 4K remaster looks great. I recommend it.
My favorite movie of all time. I can totally see now how Quentin was inspired by it with Reservoir Dogs. No idea if Carpenter would be happy to hear that, that man is brutally honest and notoriously hard to please haha.

That I don't know but Ennio Morricone who wrote music for The Thing hated Tarantino or at least his movies...called them bad shit :D That really must hurt, since Tarantino absolutely admires Morricone's work.

I saw it in the movies when it came out and it still stands as one of my favorite moviegoing experiences.
Im a fan of both as an Alaskan Native and a resident of Anchorage Alaska . Parents would laugh every time someone yelled " Close the door ! " in the Howard Hawks version . I thought John Carpenter's version would be a big hit when I saw it in the theater . It was over half full and everyone seemed to think it was at least OK . I thought it was a classic like Bladerunner .

he needs to dive into the feeling and has to find out WHAT exactly was it, that scared him,
and only so you really understand the emotion created and how to bring it across.
I saw The Thing on opening weekend and loved it! Bought it on VHS as soon as it was available and introduced it to family and friends. Now have it on DVD and watch it every year.
I saw The Thing (1982) at the movie theater when I was 15 with like 5 of my friends. We had to walk home afterwards because our ride home ditched us. It was about a 15 mile walk in Southern California through the suburbs at night. We were all freaked out and seriously scared. The walk home had neighborhoods and fields as well as industrial parks. We felt like The Warriors (another great movie) boppin our way all the way back home.
Carpenter's masterpiece, in my opinion.

You are both clearly objectively wrong. Jaws is the greatest horror movie of all time. Making some people in a theater scared is childs play compared to scaring an entire country out of the water.

Of all the movies I have watched this is the one I watched the most and for some reason I keep watching it whenever I get a chance. I'm 49 and this is by far the best in its genre.

People can indeed have their own personal reasons for enjoying horror films and John Carpenter's The Thing can still give us all plenty of freedom in that regard. It was my second viewing, thanks to my dad renting it for me on VHS, that made me one of its biggest fans.
I literally nearly pooped my pants with terror when seeing this double diamond mint classic. I was only 16 and was shocked when that dog head splitt. I had no idea what I was in for and as Quentin quite rightly said… the paranoia and tension just leapt out of the screen and grabbed me by the balls.
Only Alien freaked me out as much as this did and despite initial bad reviews it’s now firmly planted as a cult classic and one of the best movies ever made.
Yes. I think more than any other scene, the dog splitting and transformation messed me up as a kid. The head stretching off scene didn't help my already damaged psyche either.
Carpenter's "The Thing" is absolutely one of my guilty pleasures. It's cool how Tarantino has this ability to immerse himself in a film. Puzzled why Bruce Campbell got teamed up with him in this clip because I don't think he's ever been cast in a Tarantino film and he does get around. Peace.
If you get a chance to view a rescreen of "The Thing," do whatever you can to see it. All these elements that QT speaks of are magnified ten fold. I first saw "The Thing," as a kid in 98, and since 2018, I've managed to catch 4 rescreens. It's definitely a theater movie, VHS, DVD, Television, and Bluray doesn't do enough justice. More so, the last time I saw it, I took my 15 year old daughter to see it in a packed house, there were only 3 seats left, and to my surprise, she thought it was better than she anticipated. So, go see it however you can in theaters. Definitely worth it, and I'll keep giving John Carpenter my money to see it each chance I get.
I saw it back in the summer at a theater. It was packed. And it was my first time seeing it at the theater. Most of the people there had seen it, but there was a group of 20 something year olds who hadn't. The kennel, the defibrillator, the blood test all got great reactions out of them and made that screening so much fun. Hearing them in the lobby afterwards talk about how much they loved it was the cherry on top. The Thing and Alien are movies I feel everyone should try to watch in a theater at least once.
@@alanguillermo3145 As a lifelong fan of Alien, I got to see it in theaters when they came out with the upgraded 9-disc box set collection back around 2003 and it was AWESOME. I really need to do the same for The Thing.

John Carpenter’s The Thing headed back to theaters for the film’s 40th anniversary… but it didn’t exactly go smoothly..
It was the 1st horror movie I remember as a kid and it shook me. Love the 80's horrors ❤
Same here...I was maybe 6yrs old. I remember eating fries while the kennel scene popped up................and I couldn't eat anymore :D :D :D

The thing is a perfect horror movie...... I can't think of a flaw. Good characters, writing, characterization, suspense, mystery, cliffhanger, thriller, horror, etc...
I was 21 in early 1983 visiting my parents in Madrid, Spain. They lived in a US military community (my Dad was Air Force) on the outskirts of Madrid. A group of my parent's friends got together to play Pinochle. They asked me to take the kids (all under 16) to see The Thing that had just arrived at the military theater. After the movie I had to escort them all back to their homes, and I had to walk home alone. I jumped at every noise. What a great night.
This is why I say no art is made without the processing of other art, even when you'd never think it.
I do love the fact The Thing inspired Reservoir Dogs.
What works so well in this movie is the isolation. It reminds me of Alien. It really feels like they are all alone with no one else around. It's something lost in today's movies because of production values and living in such a connected world.

I saw the movie at a drive -in when it first came out, and I just watched it the other night, and it still holds up. I totally get the paranoia Quentin was talking about, it still gives me goosebumps.

Never will forget seeing it late on a movie channel with my best friend in 1983. Our jaws dropped, both felt we had witnessed cinematic greatness.
Beyond frightened, yet so intrigued and apparently I still carry this film with me. It’s a near perfect film.
Still holds up today & still so compelling. Was perfectly cast as well . I see something I missed, each new time watching, or dialogue I hadn’t heard. Brilliant.
Original is excellent too as with The Fly and Invasion of the body snatchers. Those remakes were also excellent. John Carpenter’s The Thing however is an anomaly
I saw The Thing at the drive in. I was just a kid and I do feel privelaged to be able to say that. Being trapped in a car with my mother and brother with that little speaker hanging off the window was some next level memory making. Not everyone can say they watched the greatest scifi horror movie at the drive in.
When Fukes' replica opens his mouth and roars STILL gives men the chills.
It's good to hear them both put in a good word for the Hawks version as well. Like Tarantino, I love them both, but I'm recent years the Hawks film has become so overshadowed by the Carpenter film that it's due for appraisal of its own.
Where does the Campbell audio come from? I'd like to listen to that.

@@Reb3nga Not just the CGI. I could forgive the CGI maybe. Some of it was pretty good (some not so much). But even aside from the effects it's such a mediocre nothing of a film. It's just flat and dull with non of the mastery that Carpenter brough to his movie. I stumbled across a youtuber called Morbid Zoo who summed up the failings of the prequel really well. Check that out- she actually drew my attention to a bunch of stuff I'd missed in the Carpenter film, despite seeing it a million times.
Having quentin gush about the thing is just the perfect combination. And I say that as someone who likes quentin better as a movie critic than as a moviemaker

I got the The Thing on VHS for Christmas when I was ten. Still one of the best movies I've ever watched.

@0:15 I heard on Oliver Harper's recent Thing Retrospective YT video - that the dog kennel was partly Stan Winston's work - he gets a "special thanks" in the final credits.
Watched the 4K bluray recently, the added detail shows even moreso how impressive the effects work was.
This was the one movie that scared me on a different level to anything else, and as crazy and grotesque as the monster is, its absolutely the relentless paranoia that when you put yourself in the place of the characters you just cant handle the stress of the situation, when you can't trust anyone a dog can always be trusted and this movie even stripped that from you.
One of the best horror movies ever. Great suspense, awesome effects, great cast that made it appear they weren't acting, like they were those people. I am not a horror movie fan, as a rule, but this is a favorite.

Obviously an amazing movie from all angels and I think the soundtrack really brings everything together. That just beautiful suspenseful music pounding in the back ground like a heart driving up anxiety.

You do realize it is taken almost verbatim from a 1938 novella called "Who Goes There?" By John Campbell. Just transform square 30s dialog to edgier 70s dialog, add some good monster effects, and you're there. They literally didn't touch the characters and the essence of the dialog: they even kept character names and physical descriptions.
What better film than this to revisit over Halloween? A classic to be studied for all future horror film-makers out there. :)
"The Thing" is fantastic, but for Halloween I always watch "Pumpkinhead". The plot and characters are great......that old witch in the cabin is the creepiest EVER.....plus you get a bad-a$$ monster.

When I saw the trailers from this movie I was psyched to see it. The week it premiered, I got sent away for work for 3 weeks and when I returned, it had pretty much disappeared from the theaters. It got such a horrible because of the graphic violence and was totally overwhelmed by "ET" which also premiered then. The first time I actually saw it was on HBO and since then I've probably watched it at least a hundred times. It's one of those movies (like Pulp), that if you see it running on TV, no matter where you drop in, you watch.
Is that Pulp as in Pulp fiction or Pulp the Michael Caine movie. I am guessing it is for the Tarantino movie but the Michael Caine one used to be on tv a fair amount as well :)

And after watching it a hundred times+ reviews and reactions from filmmakers, it was this video that showed me why I love this film so much. Must be the establishing shots of the polar station and the introduction of the characters, the idea of being far away from civilization and its (!) madness.

Howard Hawks The Thing still reigns supreme in my book. The dialogue, the natural banter, the claustrophobia all add up to make it one of the best sci-fi movies ever. My dad was an editor and he'd have studio people over for poker games and James Arness would show up, stand in our porch, grab the overhead roof and shake it, scaring my mom as he yelled out her name.
When it first came out I went to see the thing with a good friend. We were so freaked out that when we left the theater we said we are never seeing that movie again. That lasted until the next night.

The next time you watch The Thing, really listen to the dialogue. I mean totally soak it in. It's as close to true Lovecraftian horror as you will find on film.
Fuchs says (quoting Blair s notes) it could have imitated a million different lifeforms on a million different worlds. And it could take any of those forms at any time. Think about that. A nearly endless array of threats. Such epic level of horror.
I would love to see The Thing itself fleshed out (no pun intended) in a tastefully done manner at some point.

The blood test scene, when (spoiler spoiler) the alien blood actually jumps out of the dish- you are completely frozen with anticipation/dread at that point. That is pure movie magic.
Quentin Tarantino's spot on. John Carpenter's The Thing is my all time favourite horror film because of all that incredibly done suspense leading to such powerful tension. It taps straight into that thing which is ingrained in pretty much every Human Being - Fear of the unknown. It's like when Macready is recoding his tape entry "Nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired...".

The Thing stands the test of time as a phenomenal movie. It had excellent special effects for ANY era and I would consider it to be the best special effects in a horror film ever done. What they did in this movie with the alien was so incredibly well done that at no point did you question the validity or realism of the situation at hand.

Hateful 8 is very much inspired by The Thing as well. Including having Ennio score the movie, using unused parts from the Thing soundtrack at the end of Hateful 8.

You know a person really means what they say and aren't just saying it to paint an image of themselves as cultured when they don't use the word "masterpiece" to describe what they love. They just love this flick and I do too. It's a great chunk of film.

I played the OG Xbox game The Thing before I'd seen the movie (great game btw). Watched the movie not long after and it has remained probably in my top 5 favorite films. Undoubtedly my favorite horror film of all-time.
