It's the second week of the van build and we collect all the materials for the floor and walls.. As always it takes longer than we plan but we're really happy with our new floor. We discus why we're NOT having a vapour barrier and struggle with doing this build in a carpark with bad weather..

Having had a leak from my heatera while ago, I wished I had taken my lino up the sides a few inches it protects the wooden floor from getting wet.

My 36 year old son lives and works in Hawaii…he was home for Christmas and told me his plan is to eventually move back to the mainland and convert a van and travel the country. He is very talented and supports himself doing home renovations and smaller handyman jobs. I told him about your channel. Some of my family asks me if his lifestyle worries me….he is smart educated why does he live like this…..I just send them the link to your channel. Thank you for making me understand😘😘😘

You gotta do it your way! I agree...too many van builds to watch and it can really make you nuts! I have zero doubt this van will be exactly right for you two and the dogs, and that's all that matters. No matter what decisions you make, what you build/don't build, we're here because of you! All retired, mobile mechanic. If you put plenty of wax all on the rusty parts, you will not have to worry about that again waxol will creep into the rust and prevent it getting any worse and because of where it is wax will not be washed away just take my advice, use the clear wax plenty of it and forget about it. Love the channel, stay safe

Cushion floor is much easier to clean too.
the water in the gutter that caused the rust, the clips that secure the plastic mouldings on the outside of the van probably let the water in, remove the mouldings and seal around the clips with silicon 21:28

That floor is excellent👍, I used 9mm ply with similar spaced batons. Wall panels, I used separate panels. So when I fitted CCTV that paid off as I was able to run wires and leave the base units in situ👍
That approach worked for me.🙏 I guessed at my build and it worked back in 2019, do what makes you happy👍
My 3tonne van is 2500kg fully loaded water, gear, Full diesel tank and passengers. My build is 3 years old and still good as new😎
** I would suggest putting fabric or wall carpet between bare wood and metal or it will squeak like a bag of mice when you're driving🤣👍
😂😂.. Ok! We just ordered a load of the 4 way stretch carpet to cover lots of area and ‘hide the van’ we’ll keep the squeaky 🐁 in mind! 😅.. Well done with your build, sounds great and you did good to keep the weight down🙌
I think you're doing exactly the right thing not adding a vapour barrier. I don't have one and have no problems - let it breathe! Great videos, looking forward to your first trip when it's complete. I mean I am, probably more than you are... 😂
Haha, we are soooooooo excited to get this van done and head out on a big adventure again, it’s going to be worth waiting for we can tell you that! Not long now, once the furniture starts going in (next week!!!) they’ll be no stopping us 🎉😊
Top advice on the not taking a van build too far. I got so overwhelmed and lost in research when I did mine, so many conflicting opinions, it took the fun out of it in parts. Just gotta go your own way and learn from your mistakes 🙏 yous are doing a great job so far! Best of luck with the rest x

After shoveling 40 cm of snow, scraping off ice on the lap top, driving an electric car in -20 degrees Celsius, I look at this episode with warm joy. Good luck with the construction (ps next week I'm going on a de-icing trip to Malaga)
Gosh 🥶.. you’ll love the temps down here, it’s very mild with plenty of sunshine, -20 degrees is crazy, imagine doing a van build up there this time of year😂.. In a carpark! 😂
Aww well done both… I think you’re very capable! We insulated ours with hemp but I think wool is also a good choice! And you were doing it right in our books!
We are not laying a floor for the whole van… we are using oak wood … and as Hubbie says … it’s extra weight that isn’t needed or seen. So no ‘real’ floor under cupboards kitchen etc 🙏

that made me smile. you've got so many battens under that floor that 5mm ply would have been ample :-)
Decent thickness vinyl flooring is far easier than sticking down tiles/laminate & you can take it up to inspect the floor. Glad you're screwing the floor down for the same reason, it always freaks me out having fitted carpet at home & not being able to see underneath, all sorts of problems can be going on out of sight.

I used hessian along the top sides, and cork in some places. A bit of t&g in places that show. Light is good.
YES SPRAY WAX... AKA COSMOLINE, IS A FANTASTIC RUST PREVENTATIVE. WE USED THAT TO SHIP OUT STEEL PIPELINE TOOLS BY SHIP, TO WORLDWIDE DESTINATIONS FROM THE U.S. AMAZING PRODUCT. THE BUILD IS LOOKING GREAT , AND YES MY TRUCK CAMPER INTERIOR IS EASY IN, EASY OUT. MINIMUM BUILD FOR WEIGHT. MY TRUCK WEIGHS 5000, AND THE CAMPER IS 500LBS, BUT MY MOTOR IS ONLY A V6 4.3LITRE. SO IN THE WIND IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE KEEPING IT LIGHT. I AGREE LETTING THINGS BREATHE TO KEEP MOISTURE DOWN. UNLESS ITS BELOW FREEZING. I SEALED EVERY HOLE AND INSULATED IT ALL , WHAT A SAVINGS IN HEATING COST IN WINTER IN IDAHO WHERE ITS FREEZING FOR 4-6 MONTHS. SO YA PLAN FOR THE WEATHER THATS ALL. BE BLESSED....👍👍👌🙏🙏

You are doing a great job, hubby will watch it tomorrow and I'm sure he will be impressed. You are both seasoned travellers and know what works for you. If you ever get the chance there's a young couple who have bought a, house on the Isle of Skye absolutely in the middle of nowhere, she's an artist and they've converted one of the outbuildings to a studio.. They have a spoiled to death dog called Jack Spaniels, I haven't seen this week's yet I know they've got another pup. I thought it might interest you as it's another young couple doing something very similar but completely different if that makes sense. Love your videos keep it up can't wait for the finished result. I agree about the ventilation we keep our conservatory window open a tiny bit all the time and it's stopped it steaming up in winter.

Hi Guys. Velton is coming along great. You mentioned about leaving windows open to stop moisture, I have always left my windows open but still get loads of condensation in Rudie and there is only me in her breathing!!!
Hey Jo.. Oh ok, so the condensation is really bad for you then😢.. We didn’t really get that in Vinny, of course a little on the windscreen in the mornings but not in the back of the van and that was in the winter too! We use to leave the roof vent open and front windows a little bit too.. 😊

You mentioned dizzy's breath ,my sister recently got two rescue dogs and one had bad breath even after dental treatment, we were told to use Dental formula water additive you had a small amount to there water no taste or smell and it has worked

No vapour barrier in warm climate is fine but stay in Nordic countries and you’ll rue the day. You’ll not be leaving windows open at -30’C temps and in those conditions any vapour/condensation will freeze inside

Good video as ever, and a good start to the build. You are doing right asking for advice, but at the end of the day it's your van, your rules. More power to you both, though maybe figure out where your windows will go before wasting wood by boarding over the area.
