- A genuine first for me! I really haven't listened to anything by Tyler, the Creator (at least not knowingly) and this album definitely did not disappoint. I had no clue what to expect, but it was everything I could have wanted.

All of his albums are produced by himself except for a couple songs on wolf, and a few coproduced on bastard and goblin
He’s really good. All instrumentals produced himself except for some melody and drum samples, either way it’s entirely constructed himself. And honestly the only thing he didn’t make was the lyrics to Igor’s Theme (made by Symere Woods AKA Lil Uzi Vert)

The two things I love most about this album are the production and the story! I didn't catch it first listen but the album follows the story of how Tyler fell in love with this guy but the guy has a girlfriend so it's his journey through heartbreak. And you're right about New Magic Wand being nightmarish lool since it's the part of the story where he's tired of this guy splitting his attention between Tyler & the girlfriend so he tells him to choose or he'll make her disappear with his "New Magic Wand" aka gun 😅 so yeah... pretty dark.
He also says nmw is a perfected version of french in his first album bastard which makes sense that she'd call it nightmarish

In honor of MF DOOM passing away, you should really take a listen to "Madvilliany", his collaboration with producer Madlib from 2004. Its known as one of the best hip/hop albums to date and is wonderfully produced. DOOM was just so talented and nothing would make me happier than to see someone dissect his lyricism for the first time. Please consider!❤️

Tyler's Grammy performance of "Earfquake/New Magic Wand" is incredible, a must watch. Still can't believe it happened this year.

If you get the chance try to pay attention to the narrative it's one of my favorite things about the album. It's basically about a relationship tyler is involved in but the ex is still in the picture. He ends up realizing how the toxic the relationship is and pretty much breaks up with his love interest.

Its been a whole year since the album came out but I want to explain Igor
Every single song on the album was a love story in the process from start to finish
quoting from each song and explaining hidden meanings:
IGORS THEME: "got my eyes on you"
This is the beginning of his love interest but doesnt want to think its serious or its just a crush that'll wear off.
EARFQUAKE: "for real for real for real this time"
Now, Tyler believes his feelings for this man is true, and that he does not want to let him go. Pretty much simping for him.
I THINK: "I Think im falling in love" + "How can I tell you"
Tyler doesn't know how to admit his true emotions to his crush and is struggling to keep him interested
EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING: "Theres always an Obstacle"
This track immediately goes into track 4 because it is a conjoined message. "Theres always an obstacle, running out of time to make you love me"
RUNNING OUT OF TIME: "running out of time to make you love me"
Tyler is now afraid that he's been taking too long to open up about his feelings and that his crush is losing interest in him even more
NEW MAGIC WAND: "sometimes you gotta close a door to open a window" + "I need to get her out the picture" + "Bust through the door"
The beginning segment of this song refers to a message saying 'instead of Tyler trying to admit his true feelings, Hes going to kill her'. That opts as closing a door to open a window or to find another way.
Near the end Tyler says "Bust through the door". Coming out of the closet and admitting sexuality is a term used nowadays and 'busting through the door' is forcing him to come out and show his true feelings towards Tyler, in which he is hiding.
A BOY IS A GUN*: "you so motherfuckin dangerous, you so motherfucking dangerous you got me by my neck (a boy is a gun)"
A boy is a gun* has an asterisk because its a correction of the term "a girl is a gun".
The gun Tyler refers to in the song is the man he has feelings for and that if he lets him down (shoots), Tyler will be hurt. In the context, physically hurt and in Tyler's case, emotionally hurt or heartbroken.

With the Kanye feature, Tyler shows his frustration of the man controlling his feelings and manipulating him to meet his expectations. 'Did I wait too long' refers to him taking too long to open up and share his feelings about him.

Tyler now comes to sense with his terms, and realizes he needs to get the fuck away from this guy, and that he finally realizes what he needs to do.
GONE GONE/ THANK YOU: "my love is gone"
Tyler thanks his love interest for the time they've spent and that something was better than nothing, but knows its time to move on.
I DONT LOVE YOU ANYMORE: "so i wont walk around with my head down like I got beat up
Tyler regains his emotions and tries to keep himself motivated to carry on after this heartbreak.
ARE WE STILL FRIENDS: "Ive got to know, are we still friends?"
This is the end of the love story, he is over the thoughts of a relationship but does not want to disconnect from him. Instead, he would rather stay as friends.
The title IGOR also has a meaning too
Igor is a fictional character that assists Doctor Frankenstein. Igor has no freedom and is always in control. Pretty much relating to Tyler and the man he had feelings for.
( Correct me if im wrong on the fictional Igor part cause i dont read or watch those fucking movies lol )

The title Igor is interesting because like the character from the novel Frankenstein, Igor is the assistant and companion. This album is split into two parts, Earfquake-A Boy is a Gun is about Tyler falling in love with a boy who is in a relationship with a woman, and his frustrations about not being with him. Part two is Puppet-Are We Still Friends? and is about Tyler coming to grips with his feelings and the situation concluding that it would be better if they were just friends. The first half has him saying he won’t settle for anything less than a relationship, the second half has him wanting to be this man’s friend, his companion, his Igor.
This made me feel happy because this is the same way I felt when I first listened to Igor and it brought back memories from late 2019 and just nostalgia there’s yet to be another album to make me feel the way Igor has hopefully the album Tyler is going to drop this year will .
Have you listened to Madvillainy by MF DOOM and Madlib? Absolutely legendary underground hip-hop album. Yesterday we learned that MF DOOM died, so reacting to it would be a cool tribute.

This album is probably my favorite. It has no skips it's such an amazing album.
In the album notes tyler writes that this album has to be listed to while doing nothing so first time i listened to it i was stuck out my house while waiting for my parents to come home from up north so i went to the back layed down on the patio and closed my eyes and just sat there in the june sun listening to this for 6 hours straight it was angelic and since then its in my top 5 all time favourite albums

Igor is by far one of the best albums I’ve listened to the fact it was produced by Tyler alone is incredible and shows his talent as an artist from hearing the synths for the first time and the final part of Igor’s Theme it is a great introduction to the album it sets you up for what’s to come Igor Can’t be put in one genre it’s multiple the samples the instrumentals music really is a form of art and in time Igor will be considered a classic if it isn’t already depends on how you consider a classic a classic Igor doesn’t have a bad song Imo yes some are better than others but I kid you not every song in my playlist as a kid I was exposed to a lot of jazz and soul and occasionally hip hop artist like Eminem MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar Igor is one of the best albums I’ve listened to period also at the end the album loops as Tyler falls in love with a man who has a gf and is caught in a line triangle he develops feelings but overtime he loses those feelings later he falls for the man again and so the cycle goes on it is genius

I see that you are moving into hip hop quite quickly and I would suggest you take time and listen to golden hip hop albums like Illmatic, The Chronic, Mm..food etc. as they can provide you with a solid foundation that makes your ear accustomed to the aesthetics of hip hop.

awesome, enjoyed your reaction/commentary. would love if you reacted to some of tylers previous albums. like his previous album, flower boy and jump around to different albums or you could start at the beginning to his mix-tape(its basically his unofficial first album released in 2009)called bastard. though a warning, tylers early stages in music is pretty ghoulish😷 he started making music in a dark place when he was a teen so it's cool to see his evolution from his image, to his music subject, to the type of music he creates because's he's always put together his own beats and even with each albums sonic differences, they always have a distinct tyler sound, lol. it's even in the igor album where you can hear it. tylers one of my favorite artist, did you know he even has his own clothing brand, like his music, he's come up with own designs and like his music, he has come up with many out of this world, wonky designs, haha.
He and Childish Gambino as well as Run the Jewels are some my favorite rap artists/band out there. I absolutely love the use of classic soul and punk in their work. I recommend listening to some albums from Run the Jewels as they're an amazing rap duo who use both old school southern rap style with new age rap.
Sidenote: Can you please listen to albums from Susanne Sunfor? She's one of my favorite artists that I don't think many people know about but she's big in Norway and other European countries. She makes a mix of Classical Baroque/Slavic Classical music as well as electronic and she has an amazing voice.
You should start with her album The Silicone Veil. She also has albums names The Brothel, Ten Love Songs, and Music For People In Trouble.
Each of her albums have a different atmosphere but I consider her the absolute queen of key changes and melodic transitions. Each album spans over a number of years so some synths may sound a little bit dated but she's definitely one of my favorite artists and an inspiration as a vocalist.

Don't feel bad because you didn't listen to Tyler before this. It wasn't untill Igor came out that I did. Actually, I heard about him at the Grammys. I remember I had it on the background, and then Tyler came out. It was mind-blowing. I needed to know more of him, so I went and heard Igor that same night. I instantly fell in love with him and his music. He's a real genius. When it comes to the vocals, Tyler loves to play with his voice, so most of it is just him, but there are a lot of people participating on this project. I can't get over the fact that he produced this by himself. Literally a piece of art. Loved your reaction! ❤

Btw Shelby, I would really love to see your first thoughts listening to the album “The Empyrean”, by John Frusciante. It’s also a concept album, but it’s not rap. John is the guitarrist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but his solo career has a very unique sound. It’s kind of experimental rock, and this is my favorite album ever :)

Every 10th track of Tyler's album is a double track, basicaly 2 different songs in one same track but usually still connected in its theme. Like in this album is GONE GONE//THANK YOU where he said that the love he got to this person is gone, but he still thanks them for the time together
