Hey recent sub here, I'm really enjoying your content. Im 10 yrs from military retirement and want to start my own kennel but also have a boarding and training center. What's the best avenue for education and certification on canine behavior and training? Thanks, keep it up.

While, I know there are many ways to train a dog on a leash. I think it’s more effective to establish respect without treats as a baseline. Mostly because, I may not always be in a situation where I have treats accessible to me and sometimes they get so focused on the treats that they’re not paying attention to what you’re trying to do with them. As well as, they start to see you more as fun food related instead of an authoritative figure.
I only use treats when I’m teaching them more fun tricks like “high five” or “turn around” or occasionally if they are in a calm submissive relaxed style without me instructing them to be. Otherwise verbal and physical affection is how I reward. Or even just energetic rewards like releasing tension on the leash the moment they demonstrate the action I desire from them.
The biggest behavioral issues people run into with their pets/fur babies are a result of human error in recognizing how their own energy, body language, and behaviors fail to instruct the dog and that’s why the dog develops undesirable behaviors. Food incentive conditioning takes away from the human’s ability to learn that skill with their dog. It’s like using a cheat sheet on an exam and passing the class but not actually learning anything.

The idea is to start with treats. It's not forever. If you do it right you can wean them within a week. You wean them off the treats. You can establish respect simultaneously.
