Dalai Lama's guide to happiness

  • The beautiful song/soundtrack to this video is Himalaya by Tenzin Choegyal. His website is www.tenzinchoegyal.com
    This video looks at 'Buddhism and Happiness', as we ask are they a match made in heaven or something else? This eight minute epic reveals some incredible insights into human behaviour and values that impact our happiness, particularly in this materialistic Western life so many are living, or reaching for.
    The Dalai Lama's talk is from his 'the quest for happiness' public talk in Adelaide during his 'Beyond Religion' tour in Australia.
    While we would have ideally used footage of Tibetan monks in this video, we were unable to and instead used footage from our recent trip to Burma, where we acknowledge there may be subtle differences in how Buddhism is practiced. We do not mean to offend anyone by this and if you would like to fly us to Tibet to re-film this we'll happily take up the offer.
    PLUS... Find us on Facebook to see more than 20,000 smiles!!!

      Your hate is received with empathy and compassion. I am sorry you feel that way. Many do not feel as you do. Do you feel that if he were suffering but saying the same things that the things that he says would be more valid? Do you think that because he is transported all over the world to spread his message that he is somehow wealthy?

      I have heard what he said from others but when he says it, it genuinely touches and make you feel. And I think, this is probably because he has internalized these values. He walks the talk and feels every word he says. He doesn't say things he don't practice. and no wonder every word that comes from his mouth brings along with it a sense of warmth and hope and of course alot of smiles

    Dali Lama Poem
    The Dali Lama for a million Smiles,
    Talked about farting on a plane, Piles
    Of people, thrown into Paroxysm of laughter,
    Being a man of the people, he helped us infer,
    His holiness, a Nobel Laureate, has gas like you or I,
    In an Airplane, overcome by indigestion, he would sigh,
    Driven by his urgent need to pass Wind,
    He realized his humanity and that he hadn’t sinned.
    Most important in his eyes are one’s fellow man,
    Or woman, seeing the divinity within is all we can
    Do to realize that creating heaven on earth,
    Is within our capacity if we recognize the worth
    Of young or old and realize no matter what our name,
    “We are mentally, emotionally, intellectually all the same.”

    Life was never meant to be complicated - somehow over the course of human existence, it became FUBAR. If only we all possibly could accept humanity as the only religion, and live as one - how calm and serene would everyday be. Pretty sure any positive change that this world will ever see will not come from religion, but from enlightenment that religion is the only evil that needs to be ousted. Dalai is the very epitome of this simplicity and real existence - he never promotes religion. He just is so cool - much respect!!

    Dalai Lama’s Guide to Happiness (Transcript)
    (0:22) His Holiness: “We all have the potential.”
    (0:47) His Holiness: “Dear brothers and sisters, indeed I am very happy.”
    (0:56) Interviewer: “But what does happiness mean to a Buddhist such as the Dalai Lama?”
    (1:02) His Holiness: “I usually describe happiness in the sense of more satisfaction, happiness is not necessarily some pleasurable experience, but neutral sort of experience, that can bring deep satisfaction.”
    (1:28) Interviewer: “In your experience, what makes you truly happy?"
    (1:32) His Holiness: “I believe…peace of mind. That peace of mind also come firstly from warm-heartedness, that I think reduce ill feeling towards others, and also reduce distrust. I always open. I never consider myself as something special. If I consider myself as something different from you, like I am Buddhist. Or even more, I am His Holiness the Dalai Lama, or even if I consider I am Nobel Laureate, then actually you create yourself as a prisoner. I forget these things, I simply consider I am one of the seven billion human beings. We are mentally, emotionally, intellectually we are same."
    (2:50) Interviewer: “A point he rather inadvertently proved through an unexpected story about gas.”
    (2:56) His Holiness: “When in airplane, sometimes this gas problem comes, then you see it is difficult to let out, so occasionally you see, look around, then you go like that.” (Leans over to imitate farting)
    (3:24) His Holiness: “The ultimate source of satisfaction [is] within ourself. If you do wrong things, mainly harming other, you get negative consequences. If you do helping other, you bring more happiness to other, you get benefit. More inner strength there, and more sort of confidence of purpose of life and fulfillment about that purpose, then you always feel happy.”
    (4:00) His Holiness: “When we are young, very much alive, these inner value, and we’re growing up, particularly in this society where not much talking about these values. Only talks when we read the newspaper or television, sports or money, number of dollar…like that. And all of the advertising, material values, no one telling, no one sort of explaining the importance of warm-heartedness."
    (4:42) Interviewer: “Despite this, he says there’s a lot to be happy about if we only look in the right places."
    (4:50) His Holiness: “Early part of twentieth century, later part of twentieth century, much positive change took place. I think world, yes there is a lot of crisis, a lot of bad things, but also there is a lot of good things."
    (5:05) Interviewer: “And yet, we have been told to fear anyone and everyone. A reality he says that is impacting one of the fundamentals of human happiness.”
    (5:17) His Holiness: “So, we are social animal, therefore, friendship is very essential. Friendship comes trust. Fear and trust - go contradiction. More fear there, cannot develop trust. With fear, how can we develop friendship?”
    (5:42) Interviewer: “It’s little wonder then that loneliness has become the number one cause of depression in the west.”
    (5:52) His Holiness: “In a big city, a lot of people, but just think of oneself, self-centered attitude, and no idea of sense of love. Then, and then, too much competitive sense, then jealousy. Jealousy brings distrust, distrust brings frustration, so therefore and then fear. Then the lonely feeling automatically come. So lonely feeling is not creation of environment, but creation of your own mental attitude."
    (6:38) Interviewer: “But the thought leader says there is hope if only we could seek a slightly different goal.”
    (6:47) His Holiness: “I think eventually we can develop a more deeper...experience about our life. Make some kind of pledge. ‘From now on I must make a new person. Same body, but new person."
    (7:10) Interviewer 2: “Your Holiness, I have to thank you so much. I have learned much from meeting you today. I have learned, for instance, that we’re all on the same road...”
    (7:23) His Holiness: “Yes.”
    (7:23) Interviewer 2: “…with the ultimate goal..”
    (7:24) His Holiness: “Yes.”
    (7:24) Interviewer 2: “...but we’re all different travelers...”
    (7:27) His Holiness: “And also same experience of gas.”
    (Laughter erupts)
    (7:37) Interviewer 2: “I don’t think I’ll ever forget this day.”
    (Laughter continues.)

    The part I have issue with is focusing so much on just your own happiness is counter productive to warm hearts and compassion toward others. It makes a person narcissistic and puts their needs above others. I'm not a buddist because I believe in YHWH and Christ, who taught to love your enemies and do unto them as you'd have them do to you. If you focus more on helping others you forget how little your problems are. That gives you inner peace.

    You can't be one of the wisest men to ever live and pass up on the opportunity on a fart joke in front of a live audience. Wisdom paired with a sense of humor creates a character that draws everybody in.

    A Tibetan student of mine recently mentioned that he had lost his wallet. Knowing that he has a very small income, the rest of the class expressed sympathy and some even offered help. The student said: "It is no problem, I have everything I need - and the finding of the wallet will make some other person on this planet very happy, and that is good for everyone." These people are my favourite students - I learn at least as much from them as they do from me.

    • @zvipatent

      Cute story, but if I found the wallet, I would NOT be happy. I would be upset that someone lost a wallet.

    • @MegaSmk
      @MegaSmk 8 років тому +55

      Zvi Benari If you were poor and had six hungry kids to feed, your take on it would maybe be different. Or you could put the money to good use in some other way to ease your conscience. Anyway, I will pray that you will never find a wallet and be spared from the upset.

    • @zvipatent
      @zvipatent 8 років тому +11

      +MegaSmk you r of course correct

    Isn't it ironic how China's attempt at exterminating Tibetan culture has allowed the Dalai Lama to spread Tibetan culture across the whole world.

    • @chinawolf2709
      @chinawolf2709 8 років тому +53

      +Kamran Kamal If you go to Tibet, you will see Tibetan culture is still there. Chinese government let him go because he was trying to separate Tibet from China.

      +Kamran Kamal lmao if he's truly a living sage he would go back to tibet and face the prosecutions and death fearlessly of the Chinese gov like Jesus instead of fleeing for his dear life (oh and did I mention he's real wealthy and living a great life?) He's just like any selfish and tyrannical world leaders with political agenda in his mind. What you see is a hypocrite

    • @kamrankamal9429
      @kamrankamal9429 8 років тому +94

      MasterofPlay7 Did I say he was a living sage? I don't believe in Jesus since he's not recorded in any historical book other than the Bible and we all know that this was written to control people.
      What has he done that is tyrannical or selfish, please explain.

    • @MasterofPlay7
      @MasterofPlay7 8 років тому +13

      Kamran Kamal well he left millions suffered while he flee for his dear life, if he's truly care and love humanity by practicing kindfulness he would not have let them suffered, he would instead suffer himself. He's just a phony

    • @MasterofPlay7
      @MasterofPlay7 8 років тому +7

      Kamran Kamal i don't know people love to hear him bullshiting (maybe he's holy phony?) I would rather read Dogen, Foucault or Heidegger for entertainment and enlightenment
