Have you tried Russ Ayres con Route 206 in Bordentown, NJ... The original owner used a pushcart to sale his hotdogs and pushed the cart all over the area... It is now in the building where I mentioned and they still use the Pushcart to cook the hotdogs... It is a must try...
I STILL CLEARLY REMEMBER THE WORLD FOOD KING ANTHONY BOURDAIN DOING ONE OF HIS EPISODES IN THIS PLACE. IT LOOKS FANTASTIC AND NOT TO BE MISSED. LOVE THOSE OLD SCHOOL FAMILY PLACES..NOTHING BETTER.
Dad always brought us to Hiram's for hot dogs and burgers on Saturday afternoons, all the way from Jersey City. There were times when it was so crowded that cars were parked on Palisade Ave up and down, with no where to park; he would drive down the road to Calahan's. There was a difference in taste, but good just the same, my preference was always Hiram's. This was back in the late 50's , early 60's. And then we stopped at what I think may have been a dairy queen just south of Calahan's same side of the road. Anyone else remember? When I finished school, took a job in Clifton where a co-worker introduced me to Rutt's Hut. They were always busy during lunch but service was fast. they knew they were serving a lunch crowd, served, ate and out the door in 20 minutes. And then came the Coney Island Nathan's hot dogs. Good Ole days.
Lived up there for almost 25 years. Used to take ourselves and the kids to Callahan's when it was the big thing. One night Callahan's was crowded, I said Hiram's right down the next block, went to Hiram's and never went back. The real deal. And, yes, there's some other great hot dog spots in North Jersey, but hey, this is just over the GWB from the city. Good eats, good prices.
This was my go to food joint in high school 50 years ago and it’s still there. Twice a year I drive up from Philly and can’t drive home without stopping
To go back in the early 1970s I lived my family lived in Ridgefield, New Jersey. Ridgefield is a stones throw from Fort Lee. We frequently went to Hiram‘s and enjoyed burgers rings fries and sausage sandwiches. They’re the best. We still would go to Hiram’s today if we didn’t live in Virginia
Pro Tip: Order the hotdogs well done even extra well I live about 20 minutes away from Hirams. The staff there is always the same people that are friendly and fast. The prices are low even with today's inflation. The consistency of their food is always on point. Never fails to hit the spot. Won't say they have the best dog or burger but they damn make a great version.
I grew up in Englewood and as soon as I could drive (17) I went to Hirams. Ironically, right next door was Callahan's, which was more popular. But I loved Hiram's because they had emerald green relish, catsup and relish mix, ordinary relish, and Birch Beer. During my college, I worked at Callahan's one summer, but still liked Hiram's best. But I do not recall them having either hot dog chili or onion rings back in the '60s or '70s? Eventually, Callahan's was sold and torn down. Amazingly Hirams still lives one. I believe they still have the best deep-fried Jersey hot dog with Rutt's Hutt coming in second and more popular. Rutt's Hutt has amazing homemade onion rings, the best I have ever had, actually. They only offer two mustards, one with relish, which I do not like. All the places never had fresh-cut fries though. ln all three places they served an all-meat (basically pork) hot dog in a natural casing that was made to deep fry. I am pretty sure Thuman's still makes Hiram's hot dogs. Some people liked what they called "rippers" which was basically a cremated hot dog, left for a long time in the hot oil. It looked a little like a shriveled you know what. They were terrible IMHO. If you are ever in Ft Lee or on Rt 3 in Clifton, go to these two gems.
Once a year I visit my brother in Manhattan, NY; once a year I get to hit Hiram's, its one of my brother's go to "food" destinations. I always order two chili cheese dogs, a draught beer and onion rings. Comfort food. Delicious chili. There is also chili cheese fries on the menu, but i don't eat fries.
LOVE Hiram's. Try to go monthly. Simple and perfect. Gotta get 1 double cheeseburger, 1 dog, one fries and couple a root beers from the tap. I could smell it now!
Thanks so much for this travelogue. My dad took me to this place when he moved to Fort Lee. He basically lived across the street. I’m surprised and happy they’re still going strong.
It’s an institution! Nice shout to AB. Btw he said the best cheesesteak he ever had was at Donkey's Place in Camden. Also another Jersey gem is Steves Burgers in Garfield
Thanks Mr. Jupiter. Another superlative review, presentation and production. Whenever I cross the GW, I head to Hiram's. One dog will full you up. I order the Chili Dog, no cheese and top it with sauerkraut and mustard...and when in the mood, relish. It was alluded to earlier...Hiram's slightly deep fries their dogs. The burgers are reasonably priced at around $3.50, but they're overcooked for my taste. Stick to the dogs and rings.
I am not sure if it is a southern thing or not, but I love coleslaw on my hot dog with chili, onions and mustard. You need to find an authentic German spot and try a currywurst.
JL I am proud of you! I remember when I subscribed to your channel with only 2k subs!! I’m sure you don’t remember me but I’ve meet you 5 years ago at the Jersey temple and my auntie is lok cha lady at fdr lol
I would have without a doubt got the same as you. I am from Detroit and we have Coney dogs there. I would trade a kidney for those and chili fries right now.
Dope! Would love for you to check out some of the Latin food in North Bergen/West NY/Union City and Korean gems in Palisades Park. Ahjae Guk Bap got a rib soup I know you'll love. LOVE the content brother!
Thank you for the video I was NOT aware of this place, thank goodness for YT! I will be going there this week The next place you need check out is Walter’s Hot Dogs, one in White Plains and the other in Mamaroneck Really delicious hot dog setup with Tater Tots inside with the hot dog, a real treat and experience They have been around since 1919
I went to eat the other day at a place that used to house a bank (very small branch). Jersey John’s in the Borough of Woodland Park (formerly known as West Paterson), Passaic County, New Jersey. Great dogs! Great fries. Prices weren’t bad either. 🌭🍟🥤. 😁👌
This was my spot when I worked for Time Warner Cable out in NJ Fort Lee area. That wasn't my hub but got sent out there to cover work at times. Gotta get the hamburger too
@johndoran3274 No. Ketchup should never go on an Adults hot dog. Eeewww. Only French Fries should get ketchup on them. 😋 Please tell me you’re not from the East Coast?!
@@ShaylaC8791 I’m from PA. I know ketchup belongs in the kiddie section, but every time I have one with ketchup and sauerkraut, it brings back great memories with my dad when he took me out for lunch. He made faces when I got ketchup on them, so I think I did it for spite😂.
@@johndoran3274 That’s an awesome memory to have. Totaly cool. Whenever I see an Adult put ketchup on their frankfurter(old term from my N.Y, childhood)I have to give them a bit of grief 😏Hey life is short eat your way.
So what are they gonna do if you put ketchup or mayonnaise on your hotdog? Do they kick you out? I think that’s a little bit of overreach telling you what you can put on your hotdog. 🤷♂️
My restaurant hasnt even been built yet, but im still looking forward to the day youre at my "fast food" restaurant trying my simple menu. Im not talking about the viewers or wanting to get attention, but the person in front of the camera. I feel like ive known you for a long time lol. I know that sounds weird haha.
I'd be guilty of a couple of the "DONT'S" posted at the front door: 1) I put ketchup on my hot dogs. Albeit not as much as I do mustard, but still do. 2) Not putting condiments UNDERNEATH the dogs (i.e., only on top). I do that because I tend to like plenty of condiments on my dogs & piling them all on top tends to make them fall off the dog (and if you're not careful, into your lap). Plus, for me, it seems to have an uneven taste (e.g., dog/bun & load of toppings). I prefer equal taste distribution.
Johnny and hanges in fair lawn NJ is superior!!!! Rutt's hut is in 2nd.....I live closer to Hiram's and I'll take the trip to either of the aforementioned if I'm in the mood.
I always relish in the relish. By the way, even in the afterlife Bourdain is late? 😉 Good representation of the restaurant/shack by the way. Next time also put some relish on the chili cheese fries though. 😉 Pies
