1:24 His speech got countered by a counterspell!
Before we quic... beehhhhhh
Hah, that’s hilarious! Funny how he forgot to edit that out.
_Nizzahon.exe has stopped working._
When playing against non blue decks:
'I will play this card.'
When playing against blue decks:
'Can I play this card?'
Throw a blu card and cast Force of will
Hey, it can be fun. Just beat them to the punch
I laughed very hard at this but I'm not liking the comment because you're at 69 likes. I don't wanna disrespect you like that
I used to play a ton of Control in Standard and Modern and sometimes, when playing a non-blue deck, I would sill react to my opponents' spells by telling them "mhm, it resolves" - they would usually give me "that look" (basically rolling their eyes without actually rolling them). xD
Never trust a blue player with untapped lands
Mana Drain was banned too quickly to get any points😅
🤔 If I remember correctly it was often was worse than Counterspell as there used to be Mana Burn. 🤔
54321eclipse12345 yeah that's why it was the same cost as counterspell, if you couldn't use it you'll lose a chunk of life
Yeah, this one improved when Mana Burn went away. heh Mana Drain is still used in certain Vintage decks.
KabukiKid oh yeah I play it in Commander (proxy) and think it's one of my favorite cards to play to deny someone of like a 5 drop them untap and play a 8-10 drop
Yeah, going by strictly powerful cards, Mana Drain is probably the second best counterspell behind Force of Will (and is sometimes better than FoW), but it just didn't have the points to show on this list. This list technically isn't about the most powerful cards.
This series deserves a lot of praise. It's solid, entertaining and educative. I often use it to define topics to study, like card interaction, old builds and so on. Thanks man!
+Bruno Casagranda Neves Thank you for enjoying it!
I'm sorry to say that I disagree. Although I really enjoy this series I find the title very misleading and the content quite inaccurate. For example this video here doesn't properly showcase the most powerful counterspells only the top most performing. If this was truly the top 10 counter spells then undoubtedly mana drain and fluster storm should have definitely made the top cut, but they didn't because one is banned in most formats and the other has seen no reprint in standard formats
Mana drain is too good. For literally two mana you can counter any card and then next turn earn mana from it. I so want one to play with.
No one expects Mana Tithe.
~Brings a spanish print Mana Tithe~ NOONE EXPECTED THE SPANISH MANATITHE
Always look on the bright side of life!
*OPPONENT PLAYS MANA TITHE*
There is no bright side...
Espacially in a mono white deck, ha!
Good ol' Manativ!
I really expected the original counterspell to be in top 3
i find it very hard to find for some reason
Justin Manangan it is played in fewer formats, like vintage and legacy. It has to compete with force of will.
@@puttputt524 it's a real champ in pauper. In fact, it's so good that I've seen people play deprive, which is counterspell but you ALSO have to bounce an island, just to have another copy
Ikr!
Now that it's legal in modern I expect it will be.
So long as you have Cryptic Command in hand and 4 mana open, it is almost impossible to lose the game. Insane killer card.
1:24 *that noise* "Bleh" - Literally a brain fart, LOL.
1:24 I cast Cancel on your speech.
Force of will is by far my favorite counter spell. Used to run it in all my blue decks.
This is sick man. Love the content!
Mental Mistep is the strongest Counter spell of all time it is literally banned in every constructed format other then Vintage
yeah I call cards like those evergreens as they are made better with power creep. Also helps stop those damn turn 1 thoughtseizes rather than lose the best card in your hand, and of course show your hand.
Mana drain is better
@@big53mac38 how? Back when it was actually used in constucted formats 90% of the time it was just a regular counterspell that made you get a bit of damage.. Force of will, Pact of negation, and MENTAL MISTEP are goats for a reason.. FREE COUNTERS!! ARE YOU MAD?!?!
@@robertmendez8383 ... this is not at all true.
Mana Drain was an utterly busted card in the original "The Deck," usually resulting in countering your opponent's threat, dropping a Serra Angel, and having ANOTHER hard counter up ready to block any answer they might try to throw at it. This would typically happen as early as turn 3.
It also was legal in the same formats as Mind Twist. "Counter target spell and opponent discards their hand" is... an okay effect.
(This actually resulted in Mind Twist being banned as overpowered for a while, even in Vintage, which is something that is not even done anymore-- all banned cards today are banned because their effects are ridiculous and/or illegal-- but speaks volumes about just how off the hook Wizards viewed the Mind Twist-Mana Drain combo as being.)
I think the concentration that is evidenced by this list is due to how few really good counters have ever been printed.
Duncan Ellis tons of comments complaining about counterspells people think should be in there
Wizards prefers games where both people get to play Magic. It's not in their design strategy to make very good counterspells, or give effective tools for land destruction or discard strategies.
Judging by the comments here, I think that having a "honorable mentions" kind of thing for particularly powerful cards that got banned quickly (preventing them from gathering points) might be a good inclusion in the future.
I should add that this series is awesome
This is deff a list that should be revisited
Would love to have another look at this list now.
I like those too: Force spike,Circular logic,Rites of refusal,Rune snag.
Could you also put the current price on the top 10?
My favourite counterspell is Memory Lapse; it counters anything, only costs 1U, and it ensures you know what the top of your opponent's library is. You can easily combine it with any card that lets you reveal/exile the top of your opponent's library and cast it in order to effectively steal your opponent's killer card and use it against them. You can also combine it with mill to turn it into a Counterspell that can be cast more easily in multicoloured decks.
This would be a great list to revisit in 2021. There have been so many new powerhouse counterspells printed for the eternal formats, particularly Modern. We've got new staples like Archmage's Charm, Dovin's Veto, Force of Negation, and of course the reprinting of Counterspell itself. It would be interesting to see how this list is evolving.
I would love to see this updated ;)
I've always loved Remand, glad it made the list.
Power sink is my favorite counterspell. They have to spend the mana and it's an interrupt.
Yeah, this was a hated one to have played on you back in the day. Having to pay and still have it countered hurt.
I keep hearing the cat in the background and thought I was going insane.
I’d love to see an update to this list to see if my favorite “no” is still #1.
I guessed Negate *pats self on back*. Surprised not to see Negate's brother, Essence Scatter on the list.
1 year late, but, negate counters instants, sorcery, artifacts, planeswalkers, enchantments, EVERYTHING BUT creatures, essence scatter counters ONLY creatures. and creatures can be dealt with in many different forms, they are the easiest to deal with.
Anyone could have guessed Negate lol
Essence Scatter's biggest downfall is the fact that any two-mana removal spells usually do the same job with less strict timing requirements. Countermagic is the *only* form of removal that works on non-permanent spells, so that ends up being a bigger and more valuable niche.
That goof in the beginning made me laugh so hard lol
dont forget... spell snare can counter tibalt for one mana
I'd expected to see Arcane Denial in there. Come to think of it, I'm fond of Vex, too. I care less about the opponent getting a free card than I do them thinking me down to one blue makes them safe . . .As for Negate, I fell in love with it the day I realized it could counter planeswalkers by countering Liliana and having a judge tell us it was okay.Where do you stand on Insidious Will? That card can counter a spell, reflect a spell, or copy it.
Arcane Denial is an interesting one. For a long time, it was my go-to card in multi-colour decks, but it does give your opponent card advantage, so it has a big drawback. The best use for Arcane Denial is in Megrim decks, where you actually want your opponent to draw cards so you can make them discard and then Arcane Denial suddenly has no drawbacks!
@@devononair Also surprised that Arcane Denial wasnt list. Added bonus is you can counter you own spell for a 3 card draw.
6:43 we interrupt your viewing for an intermission of cat
Love the videos man!
+12GaugeNinja Glad you enjoy them!
Favorite counterspell? Spelljack. Its not enough to deny, I want to take.
I just started watching your channel and "Remand" may have sparked a missed category for a top 10. That is Top 10 Flavor Text.
Archmage’s charm is my favorite. It can counter, it can draw, and it can steal aether vials.
#7 Counterspell
#3 Mana Leak
u wot m8
Love the list may I ask could you do a list of top 10 non blue counterspells
Mana Tithe is the best counterspell. Not because it's very strong, or horribly efficient, or particularly great at all - no, it's best because if you're playing White and not Blue, no one expects you to pull that counter out of nowhere.
I love the counter spell “fuel for the cause”
I was expecting Mental Mistep to be on this list but that card is too powerful to stay in formats. I think it could have been top 3 easily if it was banned everywhere!
One of the fastest bans in all formats ever
spell snare also gets the award for best flavor of the list
I think mental misstep is cool because I like the concept of phyrexian mana
Sir Spade phyrexian mana is busted
Mental Misstep is also quite powerful in Vintage because so many good cards in that format only cost one.
that card makes no sense and it should have not been printed
Well, development team on Wizards don't think the same xD They realized they made a HUGE mistake, like they did with Ravager
TauntedSymbol it's literally an auto ban in legacy.
My counter of choice is the classic 2 blue. I also love dissolve though, it just infuriates folks.
Dispel is definitely my favorite counter. 1 mana to stop any instants? The best way I've used it was to play Torment of Hail fire leaving 1 blue open just in case someone tries to counter it in which case I counter that spell and let Torment do the rest!
I don't know if these were in plays or whatever but I got 3:
-essence backlash
-ionize
-double negative
Most people hate counter spell cards when these are removal spell as well...but targets almost everything🤣
Great list! Curious, where did Counterflux and Countersquall rank?
I'm old school... I like classic 2 drop Counterspell. I don't play regularly, so that influences my opinion.
There's a cat in the background howling at the pain of being mana leaked XD
+Andrew J I don't blame her!
I don't know much about the points they had, but in edh I like to play spelljack and counterlash
11:31 nice cat
A 0 mana hard counter
That's a sorcery
Supreme Will, which I just realized is sort of an homage to Force of Will, is maybe my favorite counter spell ever. The modality of Mana Leak + dig is just so powerful . The fact that it is very strong even in limited where counters are usually bad should definitely tell you something about how good it is.
AlexLoeher uh I really wasn't asking if or why it was good limited I was saying it was. Also it's been great in standard for the same reason. Modern probably not so much but you never know- though it suffers from the same thing Mana Leak suffers from in that It doesn't play very well with Path to Exile.
I really like Dispel, it's cheap and feels quite edh-friendly^^
I was surprised not to see mana drain or part of negation
1:23 is so fucking godly
Now it’s definitely mana drain.
Because counterspells are best spells! 😂
There's also Pact, Commandeer, dessertion, withering boon, disallow, flusterstorm, arcane denial, stifle, circular logic ...
1:24
How I feel whenever opponent counters my shit.
Okay, but also Mana Drain.
It'd be nice if you made a follow-up video showing the honorable mentions/runners-up to this, the counters that didn't make it to the 10 but are still quite appreciated and well-used.
"Thankfully wizards won't print another free counter spell"
Modern Horizons says hello
I thought the vase in the Cryptic Command art was a cat until watching this video.
Top quality content, thanks. Have you ever thought of applying a weighting system to the cards that might better represent their power level? For example:
-50% points if the card was only in the sideboard
-75% points for a standard showing
-125% points for modern
-200% points for eternal formats
You're discrediting the importance of sideboard and standard cards.
You gotta make sure your cat doesn’t continue to find its way into your videos. Meowing often haha 11:33 is on example lmaooo
I wonder if mystical dispute will make it onto this list sooner or later
A thought for these top 10 best cards. I totally understand going with an objective vs subjective ranking by using top8 appearances. However, in terms of the reprints, is it possible to divide the number of standard format top8s by the number of times it was reprinted? That may reduce how much skewing reprints make. (or maybe rename to top 10 most meta cards, which might be more interesting anyhow.)
That said, Negate being the most played counterspell in all of magic's history is interesting, reprints or not. I get it--creatures can be removed while non permanent spells cannot, so for a format chalk full with doomblade, path to exile, etc, it's way better to have 2 mana up and use removal/negate appropriately than have three for a hard counter.
But even knowing that, I wasn't expecting it. I'm curious--was it primarily a sideboard card in its top 8s, or did it see play in the main during standard?
I'm not surprised negate is number one. It's great protection for any deck that runs a lot of creatures. "My creatures will kill your creatures and my Negates will stop your board sweeps and kill spells."
Mana Drain is just objectively the best counterspell ever printed, with situational competition from force of will because it is sometimes free.
What do you think about power sink?
Not particularly great since it's not a hard counter, I've always been a huge fan of Rune Snag. Usually throw it in decks with Accumulated Knowledge with Isochron Scepter. Even when it doesn't hard counter things, it still works well to tax opponents and slow them down.
I was too young to own an original force of will, so I pulled the invocation instead
I think I had an original force of will and naively thought it was rubbish and traded it away... probably for a Crash of Rhinos or something! Haha
I'm calling it now, number 1 is force of will.
ouch add that owl with black vice that could be brutal and a quick death.
Disrupt is my favorite counter spell
What about Dovin's Veto? I think is one of the most broken counters! You can't counter a creature, but once it enters, the other spell is countered, stop.
I figured rewind would be up here
Wow I was expecting daze to be in top 3, and it's right there at 10. But I guess that makes sense, since you're looking more at PT and GP, where it's usually Standard or Modern instead of Legacy. It's gotta be one of the top overall though.
I would expect it to be something like Force of Will, Daze, Mental Misstep, Spell Pierce, Mana Drain, Counterspell, Spell Snare, Remand, Cryptic Command, Negate.
Was gonna say, if he didnt have Negate, Dispell or Mana Leak, you've lost your mind. one to two cost anti-combo cards are awesome.
i can hear ur cat meowing :)
honestly surprised that pact of negations isnt on this list. i dont know how many times that card help me win the game
1:20 he gave up briefly
I thought I was gonna see manadrain in this list
@zizzahon magic If Vintage and Legacy count as 2pts each, shouldn’t Force of Will be #1 then?
Well, I guess it's time to take the three old Counterspell cards I have and put them to use. Heh heh.
My favorite type of a card. Trying to burn the board I worked hard to build? Nah. A big inconvenient creature? That ugly mug's not entering the board. Cheeky tactics? Nope. Throwing lightning at MY mana dork? That little lightshow was for naught.
8:52 you forgot to double the pro tour top 8 points
what's up with pact of negation?
Spelljack has a high CMC but it has its uses. Also, essence capture could've made the list too. 1/1 counter never hurts.
Mental mistep, mana drain, flusterstorm, and pact of negation.
Me baiting a shitty card before a good one: "Does it resolve? You know. It looks so dangerous..."
What's power sink?
I was kinda surprised there was no mention of rewind or disrupting shoal.
+madrojian Not enough points to make a list as stacked as this.
Yeah, I dip in and out of MTG, so I'm not as knowledgeable as I used to be. Still, it's a good stack of spells you got there.
I know I'm coming in late with a comment to this video, but I just found the channel. Been enjoying the content I was just wondering if you think "Didn't Say Please" would be in the top 10 counterspells. I haven't done the analytics for the card myself to see where it would rank and I imagine you haven't either. Just asking from a speculative PoV
Nope it won't even get close.
@@NizzahonMagic understandable just asking as I've been building a new deck lately and had those in there for their mill effect
"thank god they don't print free counterspells anymore"
laughs in Force of Negation
Just lov me some absorb and dovin's veto
How about « Rewind » ? I love the fact that you get to untap four lands
The popularity of all these cards is further further fuel to my hatred of counter spells....
I really thought ‘Rewind’ would be on this list
negate makes sense. If you want to run blue in standard, put in 2 negates, and the other 2 in your sideboard.
Counterspell legal in Modern as of Horizons II
