Considering the topic of this video, there is an ironic misprint in your list of the contents of Royce Chai's Pox deck: 2 Yawgmoth's Mill (should be Will).
Nice! This is one of my mainstay modern decks! Interesting to see that the deck I've been playing (using Affliction) is actually fairly new to the family.
I had a U/B deck that used howling mines and windfall with megrim and underworld dreams that was pretty vicious, had a few jars in there as fallback wincon.
I love Megrim! One of my favourite decks is my Megrim/Hypnotic Specter deck. It's just so much fun! PS. Wow, Davriel is just a Rack/Discard combo all by themselves. It kinda takes the fun out of deckbuilding at that point.
"Planeswalkers were also not effected by smallpox" As we all know, The Blind Eternities TSA has a very strict vaccination policy, ever since Urza accidentally brought the Dakmor Plague to Ixilan that one time.
I forgot about Davriel, its quite the interesting addition to discard decks. I would love to see a Pox/Smallpox deck history, as that's one of my favorite decks in Legacy!
Maybe my favorite old deck. Usually effective lol (yep old af, 90s) 4 Hymn 4 Mindstab Thrull 4 Hyppie 4 Rack 4 dark ritual 3 Disrupting Scepter 4 Stupor/Coercion 4 Sengir Vampire 4 Terror 3 Funeral Charm 22 Swamp Love that deck, but not tolerated very often 😂. Secured by turn 3-4. I have a version of that deck with 4 Sinkhole and 4 Icequake, also mean. Awesome video, thx Nizza!
In 1999 as a kid without any idea about formats and rules I just played with my brothers collection of older cards and buying booster packs and just using all cards available to me. I remember building black deck with Megrim with Hyppies and some other discard stuff, but also Wall of Souls. To us kids, that card was so OP it was almost unfair, I loved bouncing back that damage from my friends creatures.
With the printing of Tergrid, edh has a very powerful discard deck. Other edh discard decks are pretty good but they're very inefficient. But if you can get Tergrid on the field, then you're getting a ton of value.
Interesting type of decks here. Possibly the ones I like the least To face in commander. Can just imagine how frustrating these would have been in tourneys. Fingers crossed that Tergrid can’t become a thing in standard.
I do find it interesting you didn’t mention any of the old Necro decks, but I guess that didn’t really have any discard payoffs other than the inherent disruption.
I recently got into magic the gathering I played a few times 5 years ago but I didn't know how to play cause I played yugioh non stop I still play yugioh but I'm getting into magic more I bought 2 decks I bought a pauper green wolves deck and a discard deck with the rack I'm gonna buy some cards for the discard deck
Nice history!😅 Would you be able to cover any "degenerate" decks/early deck building in Magic (ie - all Rats from Alpha) or any silver boardered decks of note?
Ah, Discard- second behind Land Destruction, the most maligned mechanic to me. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way 😆... . . ...considering most opponents on MTG Arena concede on T1 Duresses, Thoughtseizes, Inquisitions 😆 in non-ranked formats
@@devononair What good is that counterspell if your opponent knows everything in your hand and discards it, or something else, before you even have a first turn 😉
Surprised there's never been a successful deck that paired Black discard with Blue bounce/card draw. Just on paper you'd think something like Unsummon would be cheaper than trying to remove the opponent's board outright. Maybe it's too many moving parts?

Actually you were just upside down when you read the word
I love discard decks. Whenever blue players complain of my unrelenting discard effects, I just tell them to think of them as preemptive counterspells.
I am offended and feel directly attacked by this comment. Nonetheless I shall grant you a like.
That's a real "I used the stones to destroy the stones" moment there
Blue players shouldn’t whine about anything
Lol same
You do great work with the deck histories, keep it up!
Thanks!
My veeeeery first MTG deck when I started back in 2009 was a Discard deck I made in college.
Still have it to this day!
Nice!

Discard has got to be my favorite archetype 🖤

You definitely have fewer friends than you could have possibly have had
Discard has always been my favorite archetype. My first purchased deck was the 8th edition black deck. I fell in love.

There's a fun combo I loved to play - 4 TIm's, cowardice + warped devotion. Bounce/discard combo at it's finest.
When Planeshift was published there was a beatifull UB discard deck on extended with Warped Devotion + megrim and a lot of bouncing + counters
Maybe my favorite old deck. Usually effective lol (yep old af, 90s)
4 Hymn
4 Mindstab Thrull
4 Hyppie
4 Rack
4 dark ritual
3 Disrupting Scepter
4 Stupor/Coercion
4 Sengir Vampire
4 Terror
3 Funeral Charm

contagion to kill opposing black weenies
Yeah, I played a very similar deck in the 90's, with the land destruction and discard. Won games and lost friends.
what is "hyppie"
@@EnderLord99 Hypnotic Specter
Come play Premodern and relive the glory days.
There has been a few new lists in modern that play Tourach, Dread Cantor, but I imagine it hasn't put up results yet
First turn kill in Vintage at a relatively low budget; Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, Lotus Petal, Tolarian Academy, 2x Liliana’s Caress, Windfall
Discard was my favorite archetype back when I was active in the game.
I'm still not sure why anyone wanted to play with me.
So thats where spice8rack’s name comes from!
Liliana really fits in a Rack deck

I came to lose a life, discard a card, and sac a land.
8rack will forever and always be my favorite deck to play in mtg

Nothing more fun than turn one Hippy and a turn two Hymn.
8rack is like classical music. It's seldom popular (aka tier 1) but it never dies

Awesome video I just wish you told us your opinion on Ranks artwork

Well no mention of balance being a discard spell. or maysonet rack balance. going from blumke to extended without mentioning necro.
Please do a history of graveyard decks soon! Really curious as to what the first graveyard deck to become a thing was! :)
This is a deck type I have not thought about in a long while. Wonder how viable it could be for Pioneer.
Wow - surprised Liliana Carress didn't appear
My one and only deck I keep is a discard edh deck that started in 1997
Do a video on Doran decks sometime. I would find that very enlightening

Aww I so wanted life gain. My commander is oloro
I love discard
Hey! It's my deck!
Here for the rack love 😁
Turn one ritual/hippie
Turn two attack and hymn
Yeah I was a monster
haa wonder if 8-rack be spice8racks inspo, maybe can finally get the mill vs discard video lmfao
Megrim is such a troll
Has the card Cursed Rack ever seen play in a Discard deck?

If you ever want Cyclonic Rift or Capsize to be even more brutal combine with Warped Devotion in commander for a brutal bounce discard synergy...
@@phelandiller4066 Loved that combo. Also with megrim + sunder was my win condition
The archaic spelling on Megrim gives me headache.
