    The kid next door to me found a box turtle on the border of our properties, where I have a huge pachysandra bed that is a haven for all kinds of critters. He intended to keep it as a pet. I tried to educate him on how they were best left to the wild, and he basically told me to mind my business. All day I watched from my yard, making my plans….he had the turtle in a big aluminum bucket, out in the full sun, in the middle of their yard (even after I told him to put it somewhere where the turtle could get out of the sun) When night came, I put on some dark cat burglar clothes, and stealthily crept into their yard…when that kid woke up the next morning, he no longer had a pet box turtle. Considering the way this family didn’t take good care of their pets at all, I did not feel guilty about depriving a young boy the pleasure of reptile ownership. That turtle would have wound up dead if I hadn’t liberated it.

      I did that too when I was a summer camp counselor. Another counselor’s campers caught a dinner plated sized Tuttle and out it in a box in their cabin. I tried to educate them but they basically told me to get lost. I took him while they were out and let him go in the woods.

      Thanks all. The kid did suspect that I had something to do with the turtle disappearing…took him a few days to get up the courage, but he knocked on my door a few days later and asked me about it. I only wish I’d had the foresight to make a little escape rope, you know, strips of sheets with knots, only in a tiny turtle size, I could have draped it over the side of the aluminum bucket, like the turtle made it himself to climb out. That would have been funny.

    Now that's what I call a tortoise breeding environment!
    As a Japanese, I am very happy that someone from overseas has kept the turtles native to Japan in such a wonderful environment.

    Just goes to show that naturalistic keeping can also be the most attractive way to keep these animals. All of those natural water features and plant growth are just beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

    Would love to see more videos talking about and/or showing exactly how these habitats are constructed. For instance, is the pond a natural bog, or is an artificial liner used? If it's natural, or made to be natural, how does one keep it from leaking? Fascinating stuff! Hope to see more!

    Such a fortunate person able to live his life along side species that would express their gratitude if they could. I hope to be able to check back in in twenty years and see the changes.
    When we talk about humans providing homes for so many wonderful creatures, shouldn’t we also mention occasionally what the plans are after the human is gone? Could you please address that subject to possibly help those of us who care for only several turtles of whatever species? I imagine that the untimely death of a caretaker like yourself or him would also be catastrophic for your animals. But I also worry about my little collection of turtles. Thanks!

    Wow he has done an amazing work there. I have a question? Because you have all these different kinds of turtles in your outdoor pond do you ever get cross breeding? Thanks have a nice day.

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  2 роки тому

      Cross breeding is actually less common in these situations because when species have members of their own kind to breed with, they will typically only focus on them and not a different species. Hybrids are of course possible, though, just uncommon.

    What a beautiful place. I would love to have bodies of water like that in my yard but worry about breeding mosquitoes. Is there somewhere I could find out how to make a low body of water that my box turtles could use?

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  2 роки тому +2

      Turtle keepers in general (us included) tend to not worry about that because mosquito larvae are a good source for the turtles, especially small ones. You can however add fish like mosquito fish, minnows and others to help control it. We live backed up to 47,000 acres of protected wildlife refuge and we have multiple big turtle ponds. We actually welcome them to an extent.

    How do you create areas for them to nest and hibernate? I'm hoping to attract wild turtles to my property.
    We have 2 ponds and 2 planted bog areas with lots of plant cover.
    There is so much available on creating environment for birds, butterflies- even bats, but very little on turtles, other reptiles and amphibians.

    hi an Eastern BoxTurtle laid eggs around sunset at the top of my uphill back yard.. i saw an egg drop out, even. the hole was 4-5 inches deep as well. From What i have read... i am EXPECTING to be a SURROGATE baby box turtle MOM sometime AFTER or on September 15. i have made sure i keep the hole moist by dumping glasses of water on hot sunny days etc. DO YOU have ANY SUGGESTION to ASSURE they HATCH ????? ALSO, right above the NEST is a grouping of large verigated ornamental cane... if i stuff bail hay around and inbetween the cane stalks (right above where they would hatch), i thought it would add them an extra layer of protection. Sir, i have A LOT of box turtles in my yard and live in a neighborhood like Geslina M. i am told by all CONSERVATION groups to NEVER make them a PET and DONT INTERACT at all with them.. i have done this but in light of ALL ANIMALS becoming more vulnerable, i was wondering if you could shed some light on it since i have a BURNING DESIRE to help these beautiful and MOST DELIGHTFUL creatures SO VITAL to any ECO SYSTEM. i THANK YOU in advance for reply! (especially, what can i do to ENSURE BABIES HATCH & to HELP THEM... but all the turtles too).
