  • Clumping bamboo update.
    In this video I give a brief history of my running bamboo installation (Spectabilis) from 2013. I then describe my thought process involved in removing that bamboo and planting five clumping bamboo plants (3 Robusta plants and 2 Scabrida plants).
    I have a variety of videos documenting the history of the bamboo in my backyard so if you're interested then check out my bamboo playlist.

    I was at a nursery in Florida 3 years ago and just for fun I bought a 2 gallon pot of clumping bamboo, not sure what kind but it had Emerald in the title, planted it and it did nothing for like a year then it exploded, it started as a small 2 gallon pot with two 4-5 foot canes? culms? and one 2 footer and after 2 years there is over 100 with about 30 of them reaching 25-30 foot high, they get thicker and thicker each year as well, a month or so ago it started sprouting again and I think I counted 39 new culms, half of them are as thick as my arm, it's ridiculous, this old boy has survived 2 hurricanes.
    I'm not a gardening person but I feel like everyone should plant some of this stuff because the rate at which it grows is amazing to witness.

    Thank you so much for your bamboo update videos, I find them really helpful since we're considering bamboo for the backyard and it's nice to see the progression of bamboo in your yard just to see how things might go for us too!

    Wow, you went through a lot of hard work projects. I really love the golden runner bamboo, would make a nicer screen than the clumping one, but I understand your worries. I hope you put those runner in pots and set them up front or around the deck, I put them in galvanized water troughs, really cool statement!

    Chusquea Gigantea, I live in Oregon and had this variety that went to seed in 2018, I was one of the lucky ones to have viable seed, now I have lots of the new generation and have been selling them on Cregs list, my original plant got to 18' after 7 years, I have lots more, let me know if you are interested in some, I will check back.

      How do you control the running shoots? Isn’t it taking over? I would like to get Golden Bamboo, but I am very concerned about the running shoots. Your suggestions please?

    I’m really impressed with those Robusta bamboo. I’m a bit jealous you can grow them to that size. I live in zone 6, where one would need to plant running bamboo to get a similar height. Those plants will look even better next year! Do you still have the barrier in the ground?

    thanks for the update. I have been watching this project for a few years. I am about to dive in on a 15 - 18 ft bamboo hedge along a border fence. could you please post a photo or video of the base along the back area between the fence and your hedge. I m very curious how well you've been able to keep that pruned . fences need inspection and maintenance and all....thanks a again. love the channel. mostly the bamboo. but the WP also excellent .

      I have a barrier in the ground. It is 30 inches deep so the bamboo stops there. It is about a foot away from the fence. If you watch my original video when I put in my spectabilis, you can see the border. ua-cam.com/video/8pJ3JxAaK_U/v-deo.html

    Very cool how you committed to this video timeline and follow-up. This vid popped up in my feed as I did a search the other day on bamboo screens.
    Curious why you opted not to go with the clumping Giant Timber? Though I like the density of the thinner trunks/foliage you've got there.

    Thanks for your great videos. I wanted to grow running bamboo but ran into inches of gravel 12 inches below the grass so the project became too much. How many inches off the neighbours fence would you recommend to allow for clump rhizome pruning?

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  4 роки тому +2

      My current plants are more than six feet around so I’d suggest multiple feet from the neighbor’s fence. I’m working on an update for the Grove right now. Should be done in a couple weeks once they reach full height.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  5 років тому +2

      They say they'll top out at about 15 feet. I think next year maybe a couple more feet and that'll be about it.

    Good video, thx. I am looking to create a thin layer of fargesia robusta clumping bamboo (probably 50cm) spreading along the fence using 40cm deep root barrier. Do you think that it will be possible?

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  4 роки тому +1

      Definitely. Don’t really need a root barrier but these plants do spread ... Currently each of my plants is probably at least 6 feet around and getting bigger.

      Hey Linda,
      It is amazing, I can’t grow the big stuff in zone 6. Anyway, I posted a video on how to control running bamboo. This technique works for any bamboo. The short of it is to chop around the entire clump with a spade and remove the cut pieces. It needs to be done 2x a season, once after new shoots leaf out and again before winter.

    • @spearageddon3279
      @spearageddon3279 3 роки тому +1

      Linda - "clumping" bamboo will not run to neighbors - it stays within an approximate 6 foot circle base (give or take depending on the variety). Do NOT get a "running" bamboo - that will go to the neighbors.

    Hi, I will lay concrete on side of home in back yard but not all the way to street fence..I will have about 4 and a half feet of dirt between concrete slab and fence facing street. I live in the city of clovis ca in a corner lot house...I wanna know if planting bamboo for privacy will be good in my case? I want something that does not grow too big and also something easy to maintain. Been looking at evergreens too..to be honest don't know what to plant there?
    Another option was to lay concrete all tje way to fence and put trees, plants or whatever on pots for privacy..is it better to grow them in pots or in the ground?

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  3 роки тому

      I’m having a hard time visualizing your situation. But clumping bamboo is always a good choice for a privacy hedge. It’s very easy to maintain. But most varieties don’t do well in full sun.

      @@myboringchannel I live in freano California I wonder how bamboo does here. I mainly wanna plant bamboo to block my 2 story house neigjboor in my back yard...it's just that I been getting mix opinions on bamboo. People tell me that even the bonnevasive bamboo spreads and also that it's very messy and hard to mantain?? Other people tell me that is not hard to mantain but pretty much all people have been telling me that no matter what type I get it still spread even the non evasive one, what are your toughts???
      Also will this be a good choice over the evergreens or red pbotinia for privacy?? I just need about 12 to 15 feet hight and maybe 20 to 30 feet wide?? Can I keep it to hight and how part away from neighbors fence do I plant them? I live in zone 9 I think.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  3 роки тому

      Even clumpers get big but they’re not what I’d call invasive. Mine are 5 or 6 years old and they’re about 6-7 feet around. My varieties top out at about 15 feet so they’re great for a privacy hedge. If you are in full sun though in Southern California bamboo might not be the best choice.

      Svyatoslav Egorov No problem. I used 30 inches but I was bounding Spectabilis, which is a type of running bamboo which is very aggressive. Many people don’t even put in a barrier for clumping bamboo. But it can get big. Very big. My plants are about three years old now and they are over 6 feet wide and still spreading out.

      @@myboringchannel I put the barrier only from the side of the fence so that they did not get to the neighbor, on my side I still control them myself and chop off the extra stems.
